Police shoot man fleeing traffic stop outside Capitol

Police in Washington, DC, shot and killed a man near the US Capitol after he fled a traffic stop and brandished a weapon, news reports indicate.

According to witnesses, 10 to 15 gunshots rang out at the intersection of New Jersey Avenue and C Street Northwest, within earshot of the Capitol, at about 5:20 p.m.

According to Politico:

In a statement emailed to reporters, the Capitol Police said the shooting was “an isolated incident unrelated to the security of the Capitol Complex,” that all buildings had resumed “normal operations” and that the Capitol’s “security posture” had not changed.

Capitol police said the incident started when officers tried to stop a white Mercedes near Union Station. The car fled, striking a police officer, and police gave chase.

Police said the driver of the car pulled a gun on officers near New Jersey Avenue and C Street, N.W. When he refused to drop it, police opened fire and the suspect was killed, police said.

From Roll Call:

The man, who was driving a white Mercedes with a temporary Virginia tag, has not been identified, according to Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

Schneider said the incident began at around 5:15 p.m., when officers initiated a “routine traffic stop” at the 100 block of Massachusetts Avenue Northeast.

Schneider said the suspect immediately began to flee the officers in his car... The suspect came to a stop near New Jersey Avenue and C Street Northwest. The suspect then brandished a handgun from inside his car, and police officers verbally commanded him to drop his weapon.

“The suspect did not, officers fired, and the suspect was shot,” Schneider said, adding that the suspect died of his injuries.

  1. Just another crazy day in D.C. I suppose......

Well, it could have been a shootout where they killed each other....or maybe an armed citizen could have taken down this crook once he saw him waving a gun

He was murmuring loudly out his window, "Is it safe, is it safe?".Then he threw his dental "tools" out.

I have very little sympathy for the pigs, but hitting one with the car while fleeing is a thing you simply should not do.

    Sometimes stupid hurts..

Yeah, gotta defend the actions of the police here, if the facts are as they say, in the story.....pulling a gun on a cop, who has one too-not smart

I'm willing wager it that the suspect killed in action was Black, if not, then he could be a racist inbreed high on METH.

    Who knows?

One less dumb criminal. Wonder what they'll find out was the reason. Probably had a dimebag stuffed in the back seat they never would have found.

Reminds me of a light cream Caddy, probably a $50k car, with a boot on it i saw once.

  7. I have to side with the cop this time

if the guy actually tried to run over the officer with the car, then he needed to be stopped. killed maybe not, but stopped nonetheless.

way too much deadly force, tasering, choke holds (killed a man last week with one of those, broke his neck) and excessive force in situations that don't merit it.

a briton wrote a book about how western society was going to 'eat itself' and I'll be damned if he wasn't whistling dixie here with that. He hit it on the head.

we're de-evolving into dog eat dog, kill or be killed in my lifetime. so very sad.
