A Fox affiliate reports that the Massachusetts National Guard began probing the racist email sent by Capt. Justin Barrett, a Boston cop, a week ago.
"After a preliminary investigation, Capt. Barrett was suspended from his military duties on July 25, 2009 pending the outcome of further investigation," Boston's FOX25 reports.
The report adds that the "language contained in the e-mail violates policies of the Massachusetts National Guard and what it stands for in its commitment to uphold and protect the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Constitution of the United States."
The officer apologized last night for the email, claiming, "I am not a racist."
"It was a poor choice of words. I did not mean to offend anyone," Barrett told NewsCenter 5. "The words were being used to characterize behavior not describe anyone."
The officer said that he didn't mean to use words like 'banana eating jungle monkey' "in a racist way."
"It was a poor choice of words," Barrett said. I didn't mean it in a racist way. I treat everyone with dignity and respect.".
Barrett and his attorney said they will fight the charges brought both by the police department and the National Guard.
"People are making it about race. It is not about race," Barrett claimed.
Barrett will get only pro forma support from the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association which condemned the e-mail, but said it is contractually obligated to protect his rights at a disciplinary hearing.

The Fox affiliate in Boston has published the text of the email Boston police officer Justin Barrett sent in which he referred to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., as a "banana-eating jungle monkey."
It now appears Barrett's email was a letter to the editor of the Boston Globe, complaining of the Globe's coverage of the Gates arrest on July 16.
Of Gates, Barrett wrote: "He is a suspect and will always be a suspect."
"If I was the officer [Gates] verbally assaulted like a banana-eating jungle monkey, I would have sprayed him in the face with OC [pepper spray] deserving of his belligerent non-compliance."
Barrett then went on to berate the author of the Globe article to which he objected.
"You are a hot little bird with minimal experiences in a harsh field," Barrett wrote. "You are a fool. An infidel. You have no business writing for a US newspaper nevermind detailing and analyzing half-truths."
AP reported that "Barrett was trained in racial profiling prevention and had shown no signs of racial discrimination in the past."
Barrett's tirade has spawned an instant flurry of comments on blogs and talk shows.
"If this is what [police officers are] putting in emails, imagine what they're saying in private," blogged The Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan.

The police officer who called Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., a "jungle monkey" is a "cancer on the department," Boston Mayor Tom Menino said Wednesday.
A blog posting by Cindy Adams at Examiner.com also says Menino called for the officer to be fired immediately.
The Boston Globe reports that Barrett will be represented by the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association, the local police union. The union is expected to make a statement on the case Wednesday evening.

A Boston police officer has been suspended and likely will be fired after sending an anonymous email that referred to Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. as a "jungle monkey."
According to the Boston Herald, 36-year-old Officer Justin Barrett was placed "on administrative leave pending a termination hearing yesterday afternoon. When a supervisor confronted Barrett about the e-mail - in which he called Gates a 'jungle monkey' - he admitted to being the author."
ABC affiliate WCVB reports that Barrett sent the email to colleagues at the National Guard -- he is also a reserve soldier in the Guard -- and to the Boston Globe. Police traced the email back to Barrett on Tuesday.
Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis "immediately stripped the cop of his gun and badge," the Herald reported Wednesday.
Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., was arrested on the front porch of his own home on a public disturbance charge July 16 in an incident where a police officer suspected the Harvard scholar of being a burglar after Gates jimmied his way in. Gates says he was a victim of racial profiling. Charges against him were quickly dropped.
The incident became an even larger controversy when President Barack Obama said last week that the Cambridge police had "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates. And most recently, the neighbor of Gates whose 911 call started the incident said she never mentioned that the two persons on Gates's porch were black, and didn't talk to the arresting officer, Sgt. James Crowley, at the scene.
Both of those claims contradict Sgt. Crowley's police report on the incident.

It was only a matter of time before the racial slurs from law enforcement would start. The majority of policemen are OK, but there are those out there who are racist. I know because I live in a barrio, and I can't tell you how often latino men and teenagers are harassed by these cops. We all know who they are, but it doesn't do any good to file complaints because the police take their side.

Now it opens them up to being scrutinized and watched to such a degree that they will get caught in situations. There's bullies and there's bullies, cops are bullies to the public and do dirty things. They went one bridge to far in thinking that they can bully the president to do what they wanted. I think know they are seeing how much of a bully the Fed can be and how now they won't give them a break or may investigate every instance of police malfeasance.

I spent 4 years in Boston, and it's full of racists. I have no reason to believe that the cops are not representative of that attitude. And crossing the river over into Cambridge doesn't up you by 50 years into the future, that is for sure.
For those of you who don't recall it, there were MAJOR riots in Boston and Cambridge over the whole school integration issue back in the early 70's. We aren't all that removed from those days, now. The south ain't got nothing on parts of the north when it comes to racist attitudes, believe me.
And for the cops to be any better than the regular citizens is not terribly realistic. This guy needs to be removed from his positions and never allowed to have any kind of a job where he deals with the public in any position of authority. He has proved that he has no respect for those who he is supposed to be helping, and that kind of attitude won't work in reality.
And the cops wonder why some of us don't respect them, either...
It is my belief that the police in the USA is out of control. I also believe that the police today is the biggest enemy of 'we the people'.
However, in this case, I see no wrong doing on the part of the policeman - his right to have an opinion of someone and to say it loud is GUARANTEED and PROTECTED by the First amandement.
These police officers who are stoking this battle need to be shut down by their superiors BEFORE something worse happens. Police are not allowed to engage in this type of politics FOR A REASON. Someone could get hurt in the middle of the night with no backup. How stupid do you have to be to figure that one out? And getting on TV as a cop and mouthing off? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
And it is NOT illegal to "get angry" in your own house. That CANNOT be called a "public disturbance" at any definition. And, as soon as you mention race at all, in a 911 call, even if it is hispanic, you can figure out what is going on here.
I think the police chief needs a new job. Cambridge needs a community-sensitive chief, not a closet racist of any kind. Cambridge is a fantastic place and deserves BETTER LAW ENFORCEMENT.

However, I believe that the Cambridge Chief of Police should be relieved of his duty since this entire matter is a reflection on his leadership ability. Apparently the Cambridge police officers have forgotten that their primary duty is to protect the members of the community they serve. In fact, the handling of this matter exposes the need for ongoing sensitivity training within the Cambridge police department.

Frank: I have lived in the south as well, not as far south as Miami, but within a few miles of Mobile. I saw racism in both the NE and the south, without question. And in eastern PA you will find people that are just as racist as anyone you will find in the south.

I have always thought when some group or somebody say that they are or should go to some form of sensitivity training, that makes me laugh. For the simple fact that they know it's wrong but they think it's okay as long as they can get away with it. We want to be able to hate as a way to express what happened to us personally or to a family member. It's a way of saying I will retaliate against one of them for something that has happened in my life, and this is wrong. I believe this light being shined now on police is a wake up call for many of them. Because they have never been outed like that by the President of the US, never has been done. That is why the cops went nuts, because they actually see somebody that isn't cool with what they do or did. And your starting to see them act in a manner that whatever was standard operating procedure isn't going to work now.
Being scared is a good thing, they are scared of having the bright lights of the Federal govt. and the media going up there butts. Being scared makes you think before you act and decide if it's truly worth being a bigot or discriminatory. Alex Jones made a comment that I heard a few years ago that I like. He said that with police "You may beat the rap but not the ride", and what he meant is that the cop may not get charged but he will have to go through the process and have the light of the community and the court look into his career. The policeman has the first amendment right to say anything he wants. The government cannot stop him from saying anything he wants or make a law stopping from saying anything he wants He does not have the right to be a policeman. The police department has every right to enforce standards in what they hire. He said it and the department has every right to say this is not the attitude we want on our force.
I do wonder that Gates, in his own home is not afforded the same right. As an American he had every right to question the actions of the cops. The police had every right to ask him to prove he wasn't an intruder, which he did. After that why were the police at his house. There is no law infringing on free speech for Americans which says you cannot demand a badge number and name, there is no law which says you have to be polite to the police officer. It may make things go easier but to arrest someone for exercising their right to free speech is more than stupid. The policeman didn't like the fact that Gates was not respectful to him inside Gates home to he told him that the acustics in the kitchen made it so he couldn't understand Gated would Gates come outside. The minute Gates stepped outside he arrested him. I would charge him with infringing on Prof. Gates freedom of speech.

WJM, I grew up in Boston and while I will admit there is more intolerance than I would prefer there are LOTS of good people there and the whole city isn't fullo of racists.
I will also correct you on the "riots over school integration", that was in the 70's and mainly confined to Southie and Boston city hall, there weren't any riots in Cambridge and there weren't riots in Southie either.
Civil disobedience yes and it did get heated but I wouldn't call them riots.
I know this because I lived through them and yes it was a sad chapter in the history of a GREAT city and though I wouldn't ever suggest we forget the past or view it with rose colored glasses you can't say that something that happened over 30 years ago is indicative of the attitude of the city today.
Fortunately attitudes change as newer generations populate the culture with their experiences and ideals, this is just such an opportunity for those of us in my generation to put our stamp on a new way of thinking and culture within the city.
Though I now reside 3,000 miles away Boston will always be my hometown and I will ALWAYS be proud of my hometown, she may have a checkered past and have things in it I wish weren't there but I still love her nonetheless.

There are many problems in the judicial system and it should start with those who are suppose to be "protecting" the citizens. The judicial system is a racist, misogynistic system designed to protect only one group of people in the U.S. and that's White Men. Most preferably Rich White Men. It is not designed to protect anyone else. And for the record, I am a white woman who called 911 after my husband hit me and left multiple bruises all over my body. The lead officer was more concerned with the bite mark I left on my ex-husbands arm to get away...then he was in the bruises all over my body...and refused to call a female officer so that I could show her my bruises. He then arrested ME because I was in shock and didn't move fast enough to show him my I.D. He arrested ME. I was subjected to humiliation and sexist remarks from other officers and other detainees at the jail. My ex-husband got off scott free, but did have the decency to tell the truth so that the ADA dropped the charges. Me...the one who called 911 with bruises all over my body. Nothing happened to the arresting officer.

Apparently the Boston Police also suffer from an over abundance of stupidity. For Barrett to call Gates a bananna eating jungle monkey is reprehensible. For Barrett to refer to Gates a suspect and always will be a suspect calls into question Barrett's ability to continue as a police officer. A review of the Gates incident reveals the following the officers entered Gates' house without permission and without the necessary exigent circumstance to justify a warrantless entry into someone's home. A home may only be entered by cops who have permission, a warrant or exigent circumstances to believe a felony had been committed or was being committed. As for the actual arrest the charge Gates was arrested under applies to a public place. Again, Gates was in his house. If he had told the officer to go screw himself that would have been acceptable.
As for Barrett, the Boston Police Department should fire him now, simply because of his lack of knowledge regarding the law. He will end up costing the City of Boston many millions later on when he beats the hell, or plants evidence, on some defendant.
I have no illusions about the tender sensibilities of the police, but they're generally too self-preserving to send an email like the above. This guy is a basket case or a troll. In other words, nothing to see here, folks, just move along...

In the 40's the police officer was the guy "walking a beat", swiping an apple off of a fruit cart, and a friend to the neighborhood. In the 50's he was still the lovable member of the community, but people became aware of his brutal tactics off the street during interrogations (the rubber hose). In the 60's some officers didn't care of what was thought of them, and they were seen beating people in front of cameras. IN the 70's cops got a "black eye" when some of them were characterized as rogue and corrupt when they were exposed in books like "Serpico". In the 80's it was commonplace to see police corruption trials in the news. In the 90's police character reached a new low with the Rodney King video.
All of this changed on September 11, 2001. Because of the sacrifice of some brave men, police integrity was restored. Unfortunately, we didn't learn the lessons of the past sixty years. Police Officers are not paragon's of virtue, nor are the corrupt individuals. Police Officers are people, and just that. There are good people and their are bad people. Good people who are Police Officer's take their role in society and the public trust seriously. Bad people who are Police Officers take their role in society and the public trust for granted.
We can only judge these people by how they take their civic responsibility. Their are good people who wear the badge out there, and they should be treated with respect and admiration. By the same token, there are people out there who don't deserve to wear the badge, and shouldn't be allowed to perform this awesome responsibility. First, Death to the Left has just got to be a snark. The only way to interpret his (her) posts is that they are black satire, and I get a kick out of the originality of some of them. It was written by a black professional basketball player recounting why this excuse (a quote from a professor of criminal studies at John Jay University (?)) either is baloney or also applies to blacks who are constantly being harassed by cops. He listed several incidents where he himself was threatened by the cops just because he was black and they didn't think he should be in the neighborhood where he was, or driving the car he was, or because he "looked suspicious." By the way, in typical cop fashion they never once apologized for what they had done.
If you can excuse cops' behavior on the grounds that they are stressed out, then you can excuse someone else's behavior because they have had bad experiences with cops and are also stressed out.

I am white, a single woman, I watched helplessly as two of these armed thugs, and a third one (two white and one Hispanic "police officers"..held my 26 year old daughter 's arms behind her back and "feel" her up and down, because they had stopped me for a minor traffic violation..I switched lanes with out using my signal (the street was empty of traffic, it was a one way street, it was about 10:30 pm,a weekday, just out of a movie, on our way home) my bad...! Justin Barrett, a Boston policeman, sent Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. an e-mail identifying the professor as a “banana-eating jungle monkey.”
Dr. Gates is, of course, the man jailed for jimmying his own front door after arriving home after a 20-hour flight from China. His very thin excuse was something about a lost or mislaid key.
The officer when asked about his mass e-mail promptly replied several days later claiming, “I am not a racist.”
Well that ends That.

I have ALSO been harassed by the police on several occasions. Followed around town as a teenager because the cops might be able to "bust" an underage drinking party if they followed me long enough. Or because I was driving through Massachusetts with an out of state license plate and was pulled over to have my car "randomly" searched for drugs, harassed for twenty minutes on the side of the highway. It's all relative.
Do you think that just because there are only white people in a town, the police just sit at their station doing nothing because there's "nobody to harass"? NO! They still pull people over for speeding, arrest people for breaking and entering...etc.

I do, however, agree with your comment about Obama's lack of interest in the suffering meted out to the gay community.
Many people are calling the marriage equality issue and gay rights the last, great civil rights battle. (This is, of course, hyperbole -- there will no doubt be others we have yet to recognize.) It pains and disgusts me that Obama's election owes heavily to this community, yet his support of it post-election is paltry and inexcusable.
I fear that, like a large sector of the African-American community, Obama is a bit of a homophobe. Consider the huge A-A demographic that helped the Mormons and hypochristian right in California pass Prop H8 based on the fear that children would be "educated gay." Possibly, Obama worries that support of the community or respect for it will cause people to perceive HIM gay -- or maybe his religion won't allow him to show support for "god-hating sodomites" -- who knows? Regardless the reason, his inaction is reprehensible, especially considering the long, ethnic struggle paralleling the other's course.
I find particularly appalling the fact that Obama made plenty of bullshit promises about not leaving any of his supporters behind come January -- then, as the election inked its way into history, forgot to call the gay movement early enough to make the plane Change from Chicago to Washington.
As for Texas and San Diego: the two are synonymous with violent bigotry.

I am a white girl living in Roxbury- a black community. The most racism I see is towards me as I'm harassed walking down the street.
