(Reuters) - Obesity rates continued to climb in the past year with 23 U.S. states reporting adults in their states are fatter now than they were a year ago, two advocacy groups said on Wednesday.
Obesity rates did not decrease in a single state last year, and the groups warned that the U.S. obesity epidemic must be addressed as lawmakers reform the nation's health system.
"Our health care costs have grown along with our waistlines," said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's health, which released the report along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
He said the obesity epidemic is contributing to skyrocketing health costs, and said the problem has to be addressed at the highest levels of government.

Is this proof positive of over indulgence in American consumers....? Or is it simply that Americans have less and less money to buy more expensive less fattening nourishment...? Isn't it true that Macaroni, Cheese...Hamburger, (cheaper cuts of meat are more fatty)...beans, potatoes, pasta, etc. are more fattening than fresh fruit , fresh vegetables,..fish (check the price on fresh fish or chicken for that matter..and the mercury content) lean meat....?
Do you see what these horrible record high unemployment rates are doing to Americans? In other countries people would starve without a job, in America they just keep getting fatter.
Unemployment around 10%, big fatties around 30%, only in America.
Of course, in America most of the jobs don't require you to not be totally fucking obese. And what's with fucking pigs lining up at Jack in the crack to purchase cups of pop that are bigger than my torso? How about not eating things larger than your head in one sitting for a change? I love it when there's so many fatties on the sidewalk walking 0.5mph that I have to start saying, 'can you just fucking move and close your mouth while panting?'
Ever see totally obese people in a country where people are starving left and right? Never! Just stop eating so much, jesus fucking christ!
Just put the f*cking fork down and get outside and do some exercise. When I was a child, it was rare to seen someone obese. Now, when I'm out shopping, most people I see are very obese or are chubsters.............
Looks like red-state America has as much of an impulse problem with food as they do religion, politics, pre-emptive war, dog fighting, lynching, etc.
I guy that I work with probably weighs somewhere in the ballpark of 400 lbs. He's probably one of the fattest people I know. He's a vegan and he doesn't own a car. He walks or takes public transportation everywhere he goes. I don't understand how he is so fat.
This also looks, especially coming from Reuters, like a "everything's gonna be O.K." propaganda piece to soothe the unwashed masses while awaiting execution, and a pathetic one at that. The Nazis had a live orchestra playing while the soon-to-be-gassed marched to the "showers."
The Nazis had music. We have Reuters, The New York Times, Gannet, Time (CIA) fucking Magazine.....

Potato chips are vegan...
yes, everyone's getting to be such fat asses. I'm really getting tired of being sat on, pushed out of my seat and having to deal with fatties who think they deserve all the seats on the train. I say charge them for any additional seats they take up. If I didn't watch myself, I'd be a fat ass too. it's called self-control, exercise and healthy eating. I have struggled with weight most of my life - you'd never know it looking at me. That's because I actually care about what I look like.
PS Fatties: stop wearing tight fitting tops and short shorts. NO ONE wnats to see that mess. Disgusting to say the least.
This list pretty much says it all: fat fucking morons live in the south. It takes awhile before you get to Michigan, then it's back to the non-thinking states of the Union. I'll bet the list showing most-uneducated states almost matches this one state for state.
God, why did we ever admit these fucking idiots back into the Union?
This is about subsidized, mass-produced corn and soy products (which are also the cheapest, which is why the poor eat them)--high fructose corn syrup, trans-fats, and ultra-processed foods which create insulin insensitivity, which in turn contributes to increased insulin production. Insulin is a hormone that TELLS the body to store fat.
Find me a person who eats organic whole foods (meat and dairy from grass-pastured livestock is fine too) who is obese. Really, this is about subsidies to Big Ag, which makes fattening trash foods, which are fed to the poor.
Support local growers. Support organic growers. Support grass-fed, pastured livestock. Support single-payer health care, which can offer preventative care and cheaper rates to people who stay fit.
The BMI is a joke.
I'm 6'3", 240lbs, and play ice hockey three times a week. I may be a little overweight, but my BMI says that I'm 'obese'. I don't think so.

We're fat for several reasons, TV and computers being just one of them. But the main blame falls on lousy food and no money to buy produce. I live on Social Security (physical handicaps make it impossible for me to hold a regular job). Sometimes I run short and once I only had $20 to buy a week's worth of food, and that was a real eye-opener. The supermarket always has sales on the most fattening and unhealthy stuff, so I ended up buying American cheese, hot dogs, white bread, soda, and bacon because it was "buy one, get one free." I couldn't make it through the week on "good" food when a single cauliflower costs $3.50. If I had to live entirely on bad food, I'd weigh a ton too. Instead of making stupid comments, a little understanding --and educating yourself--is in order.
LOL - And all those fat fucks are mostly in the South ... sitting around the trailer park, eating corndogs and tater tots and swilling Pabst Blue Ribbon ... go figure ...
Veronica: About the only exercise they get is once every four years when they leave the trailer to vote for god, the KKK, or some mouthbreathing Neanderthal only one iota smarter than they are. Then it's straight back to the beer-and-dog-piss-stained couch to stuff porkrinds down their fat necks while bitching about Affirmative Action and brown people "stealin' thur jobs."
David Kessler MD's brand new book "The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite" is a brilliant and scientific examination of this trend. It's a book about medicine, a book about psychology, the food business, and is NOT a feel-good panacea. I'm still reading the book, but it is a fantastic read, and so timely. This guy is trying to pick the lock on what's been happening to American waistlines since the 80s. Answer: We eat too much (but it's more complicated than that).
Here's the book on Amazon:

You are SO correct - thanks for expounding my post!
in the case of limbaugh.....also stupider. and fatter. and stupider. and even fatter.
Being "fat" used to be desirable when the majority of humans were wasting away from TB. Since about the 1920's, thinness has been a measure of a woman's virtue. (For some reason, it was OK for males to be fat.) It's just cycles. Eventually with overpopulation and all those fancy new drug-resistant diseases going around, there will be more famine and the most common body type will once again be the bony one. The most desirable body type is always the rarest; fat will be in style again. Big-butted women, rejoice!
All that tornado about fat causing health problems doesn't tell the entire story. Plenty of skinny people die unhealthy too. Case in point: AIDS.
And don't forget to follow the money. The growth hormones added to animals we eat help make us grow fatter, thus keeping the weight loss industry in business.
I've got one foot in the grave and the other swingin that direction.
Won't be competing in the olympics.
Not lookin to score a supermodel.
A decent meal or 2 are the highlight of my day.
1. No, I will not quit smoking.
2. No, I won't be losing any weight.
Take your Aryan Nation notion of the acceptable physique and .....
Mouthbreathing, slow, bad skin, stench and its not a toad. They are fat out of choice. The fatter they get - more apartheid they get and out of frustration keep binge consuming cornsyrup.
Ever wondered how they wipe their asses? Well they don`t because they cannot and they all have this sanitationspray smell.
Eat right, eat less and move more.
There's nothing that dieting and prayer can't do. Look at all the weight that Mike Huckabee lost. Thou shalt not covet. Gluttony is a sin. Push back from the table and when that urge to indulge hits, get on your knees and beg for God's forgiveness. Our Lord can cure anything. Will power and His power, and you can go very far. Many people in my state know this but they need to practice it, God bless them.
It's kind of wild to see what kind of choices are actually available.
I'm in one of the more obese states, in the state capital. And there isn't a real grocery store for miles. Wal-Mart has the best grocery in the area. The other chain groceries aren't even here. The few stores we do have are half liquor store which would make you think they're small. No, just drunk. Liquor sections bigger than the produce section.
It's easy to get high and mighty about people eating badly, but you shouldn't have to own a car, in the state capital, to be able to find healthy groceries. As mentioned by others, the healthy food is 3x - 10x the cost per calorie. Hard to eat on a budget.
Now try that in the rural parts of the country where wages are lower, but food prices and fuel prices aren't. Easy to pick on the deep south, but you don't choose where you're born, you don't choose where you go to school, and you don't choose the habits your parents have. So it's a cycle. If you've never known different, how would you know how to change, eat properly and such? I've lived in Alabama, not a lot of opportunities there.

Rent "KING CORN". This whole fat thing is a result of product cost ratios..and nothing to do with health. I had no idea how many products have this crap in them and how the whole thing is the results of taxes, tariffs and embargoes that have nothing to do with good food for Americans.
Read labels, almost EVERYTHING has this high fructose corn syrup in it..but we just think it's normal, because the big money is producing cheap easy to eat crap...and we ALL do it. I'm trying not to, but it's a challenge finding stuff w/o it!
Wow. I have to say that while the article was not as much of an eye opener, the comments certainly are.
While I fit in the category of the list above, I am having continued success in changing what I am like, how I feel and my health. Yes, it is eating less and moving more. Pretty simple, but yes also complicated in that wealth is a huge part of it. Living with modest means and trying to feed a family can be horrific when you have to choose quantity over quality. As many have said, the foods that are the cheapest are the worst for us.(and it is planned that way) While eating healthy can be a challenge, you will find that once you break the chain of "junk food addiction" that you can feel fuller on a lot less because your body is finally getting what it needs. Nutrition, not empty fat filled calories.
So....start a garden. You can grow enough for a family of 4 in gallon garden pots on your back porch or yard for a season. All fresh and good.
Shop at the local markets. You support local commerce and eat healthier non-altered foods.
Get rid of the boxes! As Stephen said, High Fructose Corn Syrup and Trans fats are in EVERYTHING and they are the addicting agents in much of the junk we eat. And he is equally right, it is HARD to find things without it. My rule, 5 ingredients in an item. Any more than that and it is usually too processed to be of any value. And no, milk, sugar and nuts don't count!
Ditch the Sugar Free LIE! That crap makes you crave sweet and you will just poison yourself as you eat it. Get rid of it all. Soda, foods, anything that has a label of "no sugar added" or " Sugar Free".
Exercise and get active. Take a walk with your family. Go swimming with your friends or just get out in your new garden and get working. It does more for you than help you loose weight.
Now here is my political view of the fatness of America. They want to control us, every part of our lives, and they are fast getting their way with it. How much easier is it for us to be controlled when we cannot fend for ourselves. When we are too out of shape to even care if the government does anything to us, as long as we get our twinkies! Come on people. Wake up. Don't let them take you.
And for all of you who voiced your hatred for fat people. Have you ever considered trying to be an exercise buddy for one? Not in a condacending way, but genuinely wanting to help. Have you ever thought that they eat the way they do because they hate themselves and food is their only friend? Have you ever stopped to think that under all those rolls, there is a person just like you? Yep, just like you. Their mistake is that you can see their addiction. And what is you dark secret that you don't want people to know about? I know you have one.
Hey, Freddy Krueger! Is "praying your fat away" like "praying your gay away?" It appears that God's asleep at the wheel ...
ROTFLMAO! Thanks for that post - I needed a good laugh!!
