A White House audio recording released on Tuesday shows that former President Richard M. Nixon -- arguably the least popular Republican president in U.S. history and the only one to resign due to ongoing criminal scandals -- was a supporter of legal abortion in certain circumstances ... Like rape.
Or, interracial babies.
On Jan. 23, 1973, when the Supreme Court struck down state criminal abortion laws in Roe v. Wade, President Richard M. Nixon made no public statement. But privately, newly released tapes reveal, he expressed ambivalence.
Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness,” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases, such as interracial pregnancies.
“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding: “Or a rape.”
While a majority of the audio recorded in the Oval Office during Nixon's administration has been released to the public, some tapes had such poor audio quality that archivists were unable to determine if the conversations were on classified matters. The Times noted that new advances in restoration technology allowed the new disclosures.
The new audio also reveals that Nixon had considered pardoning E. Howard Hunt, one of the Watergate hatchet men and a key player in the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, the report noted.

Well, Ind.Mind has his history of abortions right. This was done to poor black women especially, as well as some unmarried poor white women. Often, when these operations were performed the doctors would also declare the woman unfit to raise any children, and they sterilized her--also without her consent.
What Ind.Mind seems to miss is that the problem is in not giving women the freedom to choose one way or another. What happened to these women up until the seventies is so atrocious because they were stripped of that right. It happened on the other side, too. When abortion was still illegal, there are thousands of horror stories out there about women who were killed or seriously injured trying to obtain abortions. One of the most publicized is "Leona's Sitster Gerri." Its a heart-wrenching true story. Anybody trying to make a quick buck might have attempted an abortion, and women and young girls not capable of dealing with a pregnancy and even fearing for their lives would go to them. Too often though, their lives were lost anyway.
These are the evils of removing options for women. Nixon didn't have enough respect for African Americans to let them lead their own lives, and even today people like Ind.Mind don't trust women enough to lead theirs.

Remember everyone, it is never fair to call for a living person to be aborted. That's murder unless they are sentenced to a form of capitol punishment.
Abortion can be the right decision for a woman AND her child if she herself could find no way to provide it with a descent life, if the child was the product of a rape, or if the child or mother would have sever health issues going through with the birth.
That being said, it is very important to increase the information available about adoption options and is usually the better choice. The availability of contraceptives should also be increased, especially to young, single individuals who are more likely to not want a child should they get pregnant.
My friend (Asian girl although I don't see that matters much) recently had to have an abortion. She pressured the father into helping her pay for the procedure although he was reluctant. Getting an abortion hurt both of their reputations and many asked why she did not plan to give the child up for adoption but they ultimately respected her decision.
Abortion should be a decision between women and their doctors. They should be able to find the procedure if needed but it should be a last resort. A legal and regulated choice, but a last choice.
Our world is becoming more and more of a global community. If we plan to prosper in the coming situation we should put racial differences behind us while remembering cultural and historical difficulties. Many who claim to be christians fail to recognize how much of a liberal social revolutionary Jesus of Nazareth was in his time, saying to be peaceful and to care for your neighbor, no matter who they were.
