MSNBC spokesman says Elizabeth Cheney a 'great guest'

Despite the fact that their own host, Rachel Maddow, has lambasted the exposure of "lies" propagated by Cheney daughter Elizabeth Cheney, an MSNBC spokesman said in an email Friday that she's a "great guest."

Writes WhoRunsGov blogger Greg Sargent:

As more critics are beginning to notice, Liz Cheney is not an ordinary GOP commentator. She is an active spokesperson on her father’s behalf at a time when questions about how to handle the Bush torture program are actively being debated by the White House and Congress. Her appearances are not comparable to those of conventional GOP guests.

Yet as Steve Benen, David Kurtz, and others have pointed out, Liz Cheney has been granted a near-constant platform on MSNBC to act as her father’s chief defender and go after Obama, often without meaningful challenge from either a co-guest or from anchors. They also note that it’s unclear what makes her newsworthy enough, in and of herself, to merit all that airtime.

Asked to respond to the above criticisms, MSNBC spokesperson Alana Russo emailed:

“We often have repeat guests on, from both sides of the aisle, when they are interesting and engaging. There are many people who appear frequently throughout the day on MSNBC, and Liz is a great guest.”

Raw Story has video of Maddow speaking on the subject Thursday night.

According to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, former Vice President Cheney’s daughter, Liz Cheney, who has been making frequent television appearances to defend her father, has now reached the “persecution stage” of that defense.

Cheney told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Thursday, “The issue of a relationship between Saddam and 9/11 — it’s a claim that critics of the administration have used to sort of smear the administration, when in fact the administration wasn’t making that claim.”

“All this stuff is on tape,” Maddow noted quizzically. “Maybe the Cheneys don’t know that.” She illustrated the point with clips of both Dick Cheney and former President Bush insisting that there was a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda.

“Here’s where Liz Cheney’s logic gets really Cheney-esque,” Maddow explained. “In her mind, the Saddam-9/11 claim is liberal propaganda — but the Saddam-al Qaeda link is totally valid.”

Indeed.

  3. Brianna

Liz won't go on shows that would really be armed with facts to dispute her garbage. I can't remember any other kids sitting with their politiclal daddy, just to defend him. Five deferment, baby bird killer Dick is pathetic. Hey Liz, some of
us remember what dear ol' dad said, and we have google to prove it. Would you and Dick stop insulting our intelligences. You and Dick need to be sworn to testify under oath.

  4. pitbullstew

msnbc has been blocked Optima cable in north new jersey for a week or so now due to the new whatchamacallit broadcasting issue so guess I dont need to watch them any more along with faux news too now is it?
I give a rip less about draculas daughters pov.

  5. igottone

I was beginning to wonder why no one would call her out either. She is on Joe ScareCrow's Morning Joe alot.

  6. Michael

thats insane. She is almost as big a liar as her dad.
just what we should expect from the spawn of satan.

She is a nobody and knows nothing. I refuse to watch her anymore.
Andrea Mitchell sits there while she spews garbage, just lets her bs thru twhole thing.
I miss my MSNBC. Thank God for KO.
Now if the devils child goes on his show...that would be fun.

  7. NoOneYouKnow

So why would MSNBC, which is ostensibly a news network (as opposed to a propaganda network--I know, I know) keep allowing a guest to spout lies without any kind of fact-based rebuttal? I mean, if they want lies with entertainment value, they could certainly do better than Liz Cheney.

  8. pc

    She's a grating guest, that's for sure.

  9. kasinca

Liz Cheney is a liar. Dick Cheney is a liar. MSNBC should be ashamed for having his lying woman who is trying to save her daddy from jail after the fabulous speech the president made in Cairo yesterday. Liz Cheney makes crap up and Andrea Mitchell avoids confrontation.

  10. .

I suspect Greg Sargent simply wants to "do" her.

    Suppose we should tell him...?

  11. Dennis

    Ya gotta wonder....

is MSNBC's ratings so bad that they've got to stoop to the level of FOX news?

is some young guy trying to impress the MSNBC board by using controversal persons and dubious statements? Maybe to climb up the MSNBC corporate ladder?

is MSNBC oblivious that Americans aren't interested in "pop news" and does MSNBC know that Americans are looking to get their real news from independent news media, like Raw Story, Talking Points Memo, Steve Clemons, Juan Cole and similar venues?

    Ya gotta wonder....

  12. oversight

Believe the lie. That's always the message of charisma. Even though the administration has changed, the media is still eagerly shoveling the same crap from the last administration.

  13. Rex Ozone

It's so family values that he has such a supportive daughter who obviously has been waiting with baited breath (she's eaten his fish story whole) to recreate the father she's always wanted.

He really needs a qualified attorney.

    John Yoo?

  14. craigg

It's like Bush never left office.

  15. liz is dumb as dad.

  16. rgriffsf

The only reason this no nothing even has a State Department credential is due to Cronyism pure and simple.

She would never had have the position in the state department had Cheney not "pull some strings".

Repubs, you guys need to wake up.

Liz Cheney is an idiot when she makes statements that are not supported by the facts, i.e. video of her father making statements that are 180 degrees opposite of what she claims.

    This is just crazy.

If Bush really had a pair he would go on record and shut this guy up. But, now we know that Bush never really gave a shit about this country. If he did he never would have started the Iraq war. He only did it to make a mark for himself in history. His view was that if you are President during war time you are viewed differently (Stronger) from those Presidents that did not. Look it up. What I'm posting here is true.

On that assumption he is correct. The only problem is that he forgot that you have to have a legal justification for going to war. Once in the war you have to prosecute it with a deft hand. We all know that didn't happen.

Now we really know who was actually running the country. Dick Cheney.

Why did President Bush go to war In Iraq? Well for what ever the stated reasons (WMDs which they eventually found tons of yellow cake}it turned out to be the perfect killing ground that dealt a stunning blow against Al-Qaeda , the perpetrators of 9-11.It was pure genius by President Bush and Vice President Cheney. You have to give them credit for that.Where else could they have dealt that kind of blow against Al-Qaeda,certainly not in Afghanistan. The War is still not over and President Obama knows he can't let up or Defeat will because he did not follow through.

    you
