Mousavi said to have role in bloody 1980s attacks

In the hubbub surrounding the pro-democracy protests in Iran, it's easy to overlook the fact that Mir Hossein Mousavi, the semi-official voice of the anti-government protestors, has long been a part of Iran's theocratic government, and was linked to anti-American violence in the 1980s, a background article in Monday's CQ Politics points out.

As Iranian prime minister during the 1980s, Mousavi was linked by intelligence services to the 1983 bombing of a U.S. Marines barracks in Beirut, which killed 241 U.S. servicemen and prompted the Reagan administration to remove U.S. troops from Lebanon.

Retired Navy Admiral James Lyons, speaking to CQ, also links Mousavi to the 1988 truck bombing of the U.S. Navy Fleet Center in Naples, Italy.

Mousavi, prime minister for most of the 1980s, personally selected his point man for the Beirut terror campaign, Ali Akbar Mohtashemi-pur, and dispatched him to Damascus as Iran's ambassador, according to former CIA and military officials.

The ambassador in turn hosted several meetings of the cell that would carry out the Beirut attacks, which were overheard by the National Security Agency.

Bob Baer, a former CIA field officer for the Middle East and the inspiration for the George Clooney movie Syriana, said that Mousavi was prime minister at a time "when Iran thought it really could export its revolution across the Middle East, providing money and arms to anyone who claimed he could upend the old order."

  1. Hey, this is the guy that the REpublicans all love and want Obama
    to support!

  2. R. Krueger

This is disinformation to tear this man down. The freedom loving, pro-western, pro-American people over there will triumph and the mullahs and evil Ahmadinejad who hates the Jewish people and Israel will lose, praise Jesus. We stand with you, brave Iranian people, and Neda is a symbol to you and to us.

This is all bullshit. Even the two comments above mine. Republicans support mousavi?? Have you been to the huffpost? or rawstory? it is their constant #1 story going on two weeks now...

Neda is not two smoking towers with people jumping out of them. God rest her soul, but fuck the rallying cry. Mouse pad Rambos.

(is this Baracks only chance to save Iran before Israel acts on it's paranoid fantasies? )

in case you missed Bill Mauer or don't pay extra for information that should be given freely. When the Iranians chant "death to america" it really translates into "down with america" as in MI5 quit fucking with our elections and general way of life you greedy fucking oil vampires.

Ahmedinijad reportedly and repeatedly says death to israel, or israel is a "rotting corpse". The actual translations is "down with israel, down with ZIONISM RACIAL SUPREMACY. "

I am truly sorry western backed news services don't accurately portray the news. But our good buddy Ben Franklin did say, "freedom of the press is reserved for those who own one."

  7. dennycrane

    Two comments above....

May the Star of David on israeli military tanks run your ass over.....

    >This is all bullshit. Even the two comments above mine. Republicans support >mousavi?? Have you been to the huffpost? or rawstory? it is their constant #1 story >going on two weeks now...

True.. This is definitely a bipartisan swindle.

From the evidence presented over the years, it seems to me that the little people are the rabid partisans and staunch party backers.. But the influential deal in goals and concepts, and cooperate on them. For their own betterment, obviously.

  9. Jhoffa_

    >evil Ahmadinejad who hates the Jewish people..

And TelAviv hates Ahmadinejad.. As well as freedom, equality, the Torah and every Palestinian ever born.

    So, I reckon they're even.

  10. Jhoffa_

    >This is disinformation to tear this man down.

    Close..

It is disinformation to inoculate ourselves against charges of meddling, as we did in 1953.

It's still bullshit, but the aroma has changed slightly.

  11. Randy

Mousavi is not the Che Guevara secularist revolutionary of Iran. He is part of the 1 party system and is not all that much different than Ahmadinejad. He is more much moderate and open to western and progressive ideals but at heart he has many of the same or similar views to the Ahmadinejad. Claiming that this is disinfo without any sources or logic isn't proper. This really doesn't contradict anything about Mousavi as we know him. And lastly, from all accounts, Mousavi did not win the election, even with suspected voter fraud.

  12. CurlyMoe&Obama

Good comment natty. The selling of this war by trusted progressive online sites is disgusting. Getting the bible thumping fools who love Bush to go for another war is so easy for our fascist rulers.

Getting Democrats and liberals to support war takes a much more sophisticated propaganda campaign. But based on the sheer stupidity and arrogance of Obama supporters, it will probably work......we must bomb them into democracy because we love them!

As for Mousavi being linked to the Beirut bombings by leaked intel docs. Makes perfect sense as the structure of our spy network relies on cells who don't communicate much with each other........just like those evil doer terrist cells.
That one group or agency might discover a false flag operation or a double agent is commonplace. Usually this stuff is covered up by a compliant media.
If Mousavi was a CIA asset, his involvement in the 1983 bombings is plausible and surely we can all see that he is now the preferred puppet to run Iran. Well, OK the Bush lovers can't see it. Neither can the Obama worshiping fools all hopped up on kool aid. But those few of us capable of critical thinking can see it.........and we can see rawstory, huffpo, and Amy Goodman fall in line to sell us another immoral war.

  13. sahhaf

This Mousavi fellow is a mass murderer.

"At the end of his term, when the war ended, there was a bout of killings, where as much as 5,000 dissidents, who had been in jail, were killed. And he was the prime minister when that happened, so he was responsible for that."

You can read the whole article here:

  14. Praise for the Iranian people is due. They are simply exercising their democratic values fighting for what is right. So what does Isreal want to do? Kill them all... bomb them back to the stone age. That is the face of zionism... an evil and pervasive force in America and Israel. The real cause of anti-semitism is zionism and zionists. All they do is foment hate in the world.

  15. Acleacius

Well, it maybe true he was involved, BUT in all honesty we the US, PUT Iran in that position, through OUR corrupt polices. Maybe it was the ONLY way to end the terrany of nations like the US and UK trying to ROB Iran's natural resources, as we and the UK have done in many countries for 10s if not 100s of years.

I don't know, BUT I would welcome a full investigation into the US, UK and Iranian scandals for the last 60 years and punishment for Mr. Mousavi, IF AND ONLY if our US government officials (including CIA) and UK government officials (including MI5) are going to receive EQUAL punishment and critique in the media and UN courts.

Afaik, we created the problem and Iranians reacted, if you have proof the Iranians asked to have their Democracy and Oil Stolen by people like prescot bush and other corrupt officials in the US and UK, then please show us, otherwise...STFU. :)

  16. Mikail M

    Fuck politics.

  17. CurlyMoe&Obama

Has the US government already selected the new leadership for Iran?

Started by Bush, continued by Obama, the $400 million CIA program to create regime change in Iran is rolling along. Maybe this is the 'change' promised by Obama?

As for who might be tapped by fascist America to run Iran their way?
The son of the Shah, given a nice respectful story line here at rawstory is on the short list. Read more

To you Bush war mongers and Obama devotees who now support the Obama wars, I can just hear you slamming the Iranian press service as biased and unreliable.
Fair enough, take it with a few grains of salt and maintain a critical point of view. Now please go back to CNN, CBS, FoxNews, MSNBC etc. and enjoy their unbiased honest, in depth reporting on this story............fools.

  18. General Jack D. Ripper

I want the protesters and Mousavi to prevail, but it looks like Obama was correct in his statement that there isn't much difference between Mousavi's and Ahmadinjad's views of the United States.

  19. Jhoffa_

    >So what does Isreal want to do?

Well, if you must know.. The psychopathic zionist faction (The so called "settlers" being the worst of the lot) in Israel wish to regain Abraham's Inheritance, and will kill and commit acts of terror to do so... and have.

Now, what were you saying again?

Oh! You were talking about Iran, weren't you and their pathological hatred of Jews?

You will be disappointed to learn that is something of a myth.. As it happens, Iran is home to the region's second largest number of jews. Many of them orthodox.

They choose to live there, under the "new hitler" and have refused all offers, even cash and land from TelAviv to relocate to Israel.

Thus, if Ahmadinejad actually desired to oppress jews for the sake of it, he doesn't have to "bomb Israel back to the stone age" All he has to do is walk out his own back door.. and, behold! There they are!

Facts are funny like that, yes?

  20. Jhoffa_

PS: It is also interesting to note that these non-zionist jews won't relocate to Israel for RELIGIOUS REASONS. (I know.. It's like - GASP?!?!?! - right?)

You see, the way they look at it, God most high sent them into the diaspora.. Thus returning and murdering innocents to reclaim the land would be an insult to him.

They are an honorable lot, and flatly refuse to insult their God.

  23. aspushkin

How about "John Mccain said to have role in bloody 1960s attacks?" No?

  24. Satan

Either way, the U.S. has positioned itself to have plenty of flimsy pretexts to further aggression towards Iran in a quest to possess their natural resources and to maintain a presence in the region.

  25. NoOneYouKnow

Well, jhoffa, facts are funny things. Jews in Iran suffered persecution for most of the past 2000 years, including pogroms and status as "unclean," although the severity of their oppression varied be region and era. At 20,000-40,000, saying Iran has the second largest population of Jews in the Middle East is small praise--Jews in virtually all other Middle Eastern countries fled or were ejected decades ago, and the vast majority of Iranian Jews fled Iran for Israel or America before 1990. Jews in Iran still look to Jerusalem for religious guidance; they elect to stay in Iran partly out of pride as part of the ancient Jewish-Persian community and also because leaving can invite harassment for family members who remain. And 150-300 leave every year.
Ahmedinajad isn't necessarily interested in oppressing Jews (although he insults all Jews and all thinking people when he claims the Holocaust is a myth); it's Israel in particular he hates. Just like you: "And TelAviv hates Ahmadinejad.. As well as freedom, equality, the Torah and every Palestinian ever born." You're just as prejudiced as the Israeli right. You deserve each other.

  26. It's none of our business. We, the "little people" who pay taxes that support the rotten bureaucrats and power mongers who poison our air, food, and water, and send us off to die in various places, we support the people of Iran in making their own choices. Is there anybody with a working brain cell who doesn't think that Mousavi is just like Ahmedi, only slightly less annoying? So what? He's not coming over here to fuck with us, it's up to the Iranians to do what they want as long as they don't fuck with us either. As for another war, we're broke, man. There is no fucking way we can afford a war, now.

  27. dennycrane

The zionist israelis would not let the Jewish Bundes that fought the fucking nazis into israel unless they gave up their beliefs, which included speaking yiddish and other culture. But even so, the Jews, did not want to be part of these zionist pigs because "all " of their posterity would be in one spot. Their plan was to have "groups" all over the world so they wouldn't get wiped out. Gee, who came up with the term "divide and conquer"? Kapish.

  28. If you want to learn all about how government shills and/or Israeli Hasbara works, take a look at comment #2:

  29. Jhoffa_

    >Well, jhoffa, facts are funny things.

Yes, and I happen to have a few on hand..

    >Jews in Iran suffered persecution for most of the past 2000 years

LOL! Persecuted? The Iranian constitution protects jews and declares them equal to muslims. Imam Khomeini himself ordered their protection. Tehran has over 20 synagogues. Iran has one of only four Jewish charity hospitals in the world. The hospital has received donations from top Iranian officials, including President Ahmadinejad. Kosher butcher shops are available in Iran. There are Hebrew schools and coeducation is allowed.

Interestingly, Muslims believe in Jesus Christ and their prophet himself said Jesus was a prophet sent from God. They have rioted when he was defamed.

Jews, especially Talmadic Jews, by contrast, have no regard for Jesus or anyoe besides other Jews. Jews cliam he was the son of a prostitute and is boiling in excrement.

It doesn't stop there however, beating the Nazi's to the punch, they claim to be the original Master Race.. Superior to everyone by virtue of being Jews. They claim a divine right to the land known as Abraham's Inheritance. (Look it up)

    >At 20,000-40,000, saying Iran has the second largest population of Jews in the >Middle East is small praise--

Not considering Israel boasted 75000 in 1993 and the US 100,000.

That's quite allot actually. Iran has holocausted none of them.

    >they elect to stay in Iran partly out of pride..

That's not what the Orthodox claim. They claim they were sent into the disapora by God most high, and worry the arrogance of the zionists will bring his wrath upon them all.

    >as part of the ancient Jewish-Persian community and also because leaving can >invite harassment for family members who remain.

    LOL!

    >And 150-300 leave every year.

Yes, Iran's Jews are a HARBL humiliation to TelAviv. They bribe every Iranian Jew they can. After all, how do you explain devout Jews choosing to live under HITLAR 2.0 because they believe Israel's Jews to be heretics? It's a terrible embarrassment. It casts a pall across the whole country.

Fortunately, most Americans are stupid and so completely consumed with big screen tv's and Britney's crotch that they haven't caught on yet.

    >Ahmedinajad isn't necessarily interested in oppressing Jews (although he >insults all Jews and all thinking people when he claims the Holocaust is a myth)

No, the Jews insult the world with there holocaust cult. Besides insisting that no worse oppression has existed before or since (Never mind Armenia, the Bolsheviks, etc) they have nerve enough to toss people who don't agree with them in jail, till they "get their mind right"

To them asking legitimate questions isn't an opinion, it's a CRIME.

One day the well of holocaust guilt will run dry.. :( Then, what will they do?

    >it's Israel in particular he hates. Just like you

No.. I hate murderers, thieves and liars of all stripes.. and I don't discriminate.

Frankly, if I will call my OWN GOVERNMENT a den of killers and thieves, why in the world would I cut Israel any slack?

I can't think of one good reason to do so.. Can you?

OH OH! I know, because you'll call me an "anti-semite" for my honesty.. Right?

    My response: Whoopptie shit.

    > You're just as prejudiced as the Israeli right. You deserve each other.

But you ARE the Israeli right, or at least you've adopted their arguments..

Again, I will and I have called my own government a bunch of murderers, liars and thieves when those were the facts on the ground... So don't expect me to cut your pals a special break on their crimes.

It's intellectually dishonest, and I refuse to perform your sort of mental aerobatics to rationalize their crimes.

Have you hugged an Iranian Jew lately?

  30. Jhoffa_

Hey RAW, we've seen all the horrible stories about Iran arresting (Then releasing) reporters they probably suspect to be participating in a destabilization effort.

What about some stories about the people in jail all over the world for the horrible, terrible, unforgivable crime of questioning the holocaust?

Ya know, much is made to this day of the Catholic Church and their concept of a flat earth.. What's the difference between Gallelo and other researchers and historians being persecuted as heretics?

    Where's the balance?

    dennycrane,

absolutely don't feed the trolls. trolls are COINTELPRO. they're SCUM.

  33. In case dennycrane's subtleties went over your head, consider this from from Chapter 1 of Lawrence Walsh's Iran/Contra Report as quoted at URUKNET:

"On or about November 25, 1985, [Arch Neocon and Nigerien Uranium forger Michael] Ledeen received a frantic phone call from Ghorbanifar, asking him to relay a message from [Mir-Hossein Mousavi] the prime minister of Iran to President Reagan regarding the shipment of the wrong type of HAWKs. Ledeen said the message essentially was "we've been holding up our part of the bargain, and here you people are now cheating us and tricking us and deceiving us and you had better correct this situation right away.''
    [...]
"In early May, North and CIA annuitant George Cave met in London with Ghorbanifar and Nir, where the groundwork finally was laid for a meeting between McFarlane and high-level Iranian officials, as well as financial arrangements for the arms deal. Among the officials Ghorbanifar said would meet with an American delegation were the president and prime minister [Mousavi] of Iran and the speaker of the Iranian parliament," (emphasis added).
