A Fox News writer who allegedly dragged a cyclist for four blocks through New York's Central Park faces up to a year in jail after being charged with fleeing the scene of an accident.
According to Gawker, Don Broderick was arrested on June 12 for an incident that happened two weeks ago, in which a Brooklyn man cycling through Central Park was cut off by an SUV, and then dragged under the car for four blocks after confronting the driver.
Evidently, Broderick is blaming the cyclist, claiming that the two-wheeled commuter was a traffic "vigilante."
-- Daniel Tencer

Dear Fox Bitches,
Just because you own a tv station doesn't mean you can just make stuff up! A traffic vigilante? A TRAFFIC VIGILANTE? You goddamn retards. Your day will come.
I ride a motorcycle. I see cyclist on a daily basis here in Tucson go way beyond what is required to rectify a situation. Guess you guys just have a death wish. I would not go up against a car or any vehicle because I will lose. If you're that stupid maybe you deserve to be left in the gutter. Pride is one thing, Life is another!!!
Nobody if overly fond of faux news, believe me.. But read the account.
The cyclist claims he was cut off and then attempted to assert this mysterious, unknown, unwritten authority as a defacto-traffic cop/stasi member. Jumped in front of the vehicle and started yelling and obviously behaving in a threatening manner.
Unfortunately for him, the SUV driver did the exact same thing.
If Mr. Bicycle cop would have kept his fucking head, and not been afflicted with a case of CUSI (Completely Unwarranted Self Importance) this never would have occurred.
Fuck him.. Too bad it didn't kill the stupid bastard.
@tlilje
I ride too.. A v45 Magna, and I know what it is like to have self absorbed motorists endanger you or just generally do things that they shouldn't be doing.
However, and as often as that occurs, I've met and seen FAR too many self important assholes on bicycles and motorcycles to blame auto drivers for everything that happens.
Frankly, it is many times the fault of the riders. They are moving too slow, in the wrong place or lane position, creating a dangerous situation for everyone.. They don't signal, they ignore signals and signs, they ride in giant packs and block the road, basically they behave like the rules don't apply to them. .. Just floating along in their own little world, oblivious to everyone and everything but their own personal enjoyment.
In my experience, the only group who are worse for this sort of thing are boaters..
(Yeah, there's rules on the river too.. If you've read them or actually qualified as an operator, you're one in a thousand)
Umm, dont cyclists, like pedestrians, have the right of way?
May as well call all those people crossing the street 'traffic vigilantes.'
From the initial story on Gawker:
"Both men agree that the altercation started because Dooda was riding his bike in the left-hand lane at roughly 25 m.p.h., which caused a line of ten or so cars to back up behind him."
Like I said, too bad he didn't kill the stupid fucker.
They don't signal, they ignore signals and signs, they ride in giant packs and block the road, basically they behave like the rules don't apply to them.
Well, look out for the Semi driver that thinks the same of SUVs
25 mph is a pretty good clip on a bicycle!
BTW what was the posted speed? Normally you can go some 10mph below the posted speed and not be in violation of any law. And the fact is this guy didnt run a stop sign or fail to signal.
"Well, look out for the Semi driver that thinks the same of SUVs"
Actually, and contrary to the well worn stereotype, they're some of the best, most responsible and polite drivers on the road..
For some reason, some freaky looking guy with long hair in a wife beater shirt, chain wallet and blue jeans = Not a problem..
OTOH, put a well to do sports nut in a boat or on two wheels and there's a decent chance they'll instantly morph into a 6' tall asshole and start fucking with everyone in sight, ignoring the law and generally making as gigantic PITA of themselves just for the hell of it.
Actually, and contrary to the well worn stereotype, they're some of the best, most responsible and polite drivers on the road..
I didnt say all semi-drivers. I said look out for THE semi-driver that thinks the same of SUV drivers.
Broderick had a temper and lets his emotions get the better of him.
Again, what was the posted speed limit in that area?
I see, this is about, by your posts, judging books by covers. Jhoffa.
Well, every V45 Magna rider I have ever seen cheats on his wife, with men, does cocaine, wears wifebeaters under his suit, kicks his dog when he gets home, and berates his children then gets drunker than Cooter Brown before going outside and cursing his neighbors for perceived slants before slashing their tires and peeing on their bushes.
wow, surprised by these comments. thought this site attracted thoughtful people.
first off, where in the gawker posting or their links does it say anything about dragging the rider under the car.
and what's with all the anger here? I guess you all ain't NY'ers. You can't go too fast through Central Park in a car and it's fairly normal to have a cyclist riding on those roadways, including the left lane. So what if a few cars have to slow down a bit, for what, all of 30 seconds to 1 minute as they move through the park.
The douchbag driver intentionally struck the rider (assault with a deadly weapon, a felony in NY State) then proceeded to leave the scene of an "accident"(a misdemeanor in NY State). The guy's a f*)(&ing thug in a big ass machine.
Well yeah, but aside from that they're the salt of the earth..
Look, I've just seen too much of this sort of thing to pity the guy.
He agrees he started it, then turned into a self important, self appointed traffic nazi.
Keep that kind of behavior up long enough and karma will get you.
You reap what you sow.. Ya know?
I wonder how many of these anti-cyclist comments are astroturfing.
Look wingnuts: pedestrians & cyclists have the right of way. GET OVER IT. You sit in your cars passing judgement and endangering others. I for one am sick of asshats nearly running me down while I cross AT A F*@ING CROSSWALK WITH THE LIGHT - much less going out for a ride and not getting run down.
CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY. IF YOU DISAGREE, CHANGE YOUR TRAFFIC LAWS FIRST THEN TALK ABOUT RUNNING PEOPLE DOWN.
I'd love to see how many of the anti-cyclist comments here have commented before, or if they're just wafting this way from faux news...
Gawker update makes a distinction between personal injury and serious personal injury or something to that effect. Something's not adding up. How does someone supposedly get dragged for four blocks without sustaining 'serious' personal injuries? My guess is by 'dragged' they mean the cyclist hitched a ride by grabbing onto the vehicle after the confrontation.
Peds and cyclists may have the right of way, but that's with the understanding that they are also obeying traffic laws. Sounds like two of a kind met in the street and this incident (whatever it REALLY was) resulted. Moving along now...
Jeez, didn't know that Fox guys could drive, scary stuff. think I 'll start carrying something to stop crazed SUV drivers.
I live in Lance Armstrong territory, and the bicyclists here are enthusiastic. I am happy to see their riding the hills where I live, but I fear for their safety. The roads here are marked by curves and hills (which is perfect for training) and the scenery here is panoramic, but the roads have no shoulder or bicycle lanes. I am a precision driver with defensive driving in mind at all times (and still by no means perfect), but I know that other drivers may not be as aware as I on these roads. Heck, even with defensive driving in mind, I get very nervous when I come across bicyclists on these roads (you have to move into the oncoming lane in order to pass). Again, I understand the beautiful scenery and the perfect setting for serious training, but really, these guys need a shoulder or bicycle lane of their own to ride in. I'll chip in.
Oh,
And whoever ran over a bicyclist over what apppears to be anger, may need some spanking.
BTW, I prefer this commentary format here at Raw Story over others.
Just to be clear,
I prefer this commentary format over other formats here at Raw Story, because I believe that requiring people to 'login' just discourages would-be truthful commentators & newcomers, and instead encourages the infiltrators (you know, the ones who logged in and tried to push you to regulate this website to the behest of their benefactor?).
Trolls be damned.
Look at the difference in commentary between the different formats. What do you think?
It is still the law that bikes have the edge against SUVs..In this economy more people will be riding bikes..This was good call..And Joffa, if you expect the truth from FOX your dreaming.
Man, there are some angry people here with issues which go much deeper than cyclist. You're using cyclists as a scape-goat. Get some psychotherapy AND SOME EXERCISE (cycling WOULD HELP your nasty disposition). The anti-cyclist comments here are no different than what I read from the rabid right-wing trash on another forum.
[...] Central Park faces up to a year in jail after being charged with fleeing the scene of an accident. full story (No Ratings [...]
The cyclist is ALWAYS at fault.
Leaving the scene of an accident is illegal. Let's see I've commuted back and forth to work on my bicycle and my Vespa for 25 years. There are some folks in cars (this just happened the other day) who believe they are the only ones allowed to be on the roads. I've been screamed at, told I don't pay enough taxes to ride on the road, I've been run off the road, pelted with batteries and and orange, called a c__t by men in their giant trucks, I obey all traffic laws, that is why I am still alive and out there riding. People in their cars follow me to close when I am on my Vespa, yell at me. On the other hand other folks are great they wave, let me cross the street on my bicycle (I wear all pink, bright pink on both my bicycle and my Vespa). I've had Cops complement me while on my bicycle because I follow all traffic laws, etc. Oh and then when I am walking (I do that too) so many folks have almost run me over in cross walks. The biggest offenders out there are people in their cars, they don't pay attention, they talk on their cell phones, weave in and out of traffic, and of course there are more car out there than scooters or bicycles. People in cars and SUV's have a responsibility to drive safely. I have seen guys on bicycles have road rage, but it is usually because some jackass in their vehicle is driving like they are the only ones on the road.
I expect "news writers" from Fox to be running people over. Why is this news?
"Evidently, Broderick is blaming the cyclist, claiming that the two-wheeled commuter was a traffic "vigilante."
The bright light known as Don Broderick probably works on O'Lielly's show. Guess ol' Donny didn't pay attention in driving school when they went over the part that states "pedestrians and bicycles have the right of way."
It's too bad he's facing only one year in jail - I hope the cyclist sues this shit out of this asshole.
The SUV intentionally ran into the cyclist after stopping when the the cyclist berated the SUVs dangerous driving, then left the scene.
To all of you, above, who think this is fine - maybe it'll be YOU weeping at your child's hospital bedside, after a car/bike crash.
There's zero indication that the cyclist was doing anything wrong. This was in a city, and city speed limits are easily maintained by an adult cyclist.
I used to commute at night in Baltimore, and I carried a nightstick to do impromptu bodywork on assholes in cars who thought they could fuck with a cyclist.
It's pretty hard to see bikers in a nazi half-track truck. It's also pretty cool to see a FAUX NEWS fuck go to jail and become a biker-bitch to some on e wearing spandex.
Oh, and the cyclist was not dragged under the SUV; the SUV stopped, with the cyclist in front of him, then accelerated intentionally into the cyclist, who was on the SUV's hood for several blocks.
Seems the freeper trolls--read rethugiican faux news biznatches--think it's okay to drive like Nick Hogan and it's open-season on bikers and peds.
his case won't go far when they compare the GVW of a bicycle to an SUV. He, knowingly attacked a man with a deadly weapon (the SUV). If he really wanted to make an issue of it he should have just stayed in his car and called the cops. Idiot.
Fuck fox.
FYI the 'Cycle' Lane is on the left hand side in Central park...The speed limit is 25mph so there is no way all that traffic would have been backed up behind him unless they were trying to go over the speed limit.
Its just common sense, if you are driving through a park which is full of pedestrians , runners , roller bladers and cyclists who are trying to get away from traffic...Take it easy ...this is NOT the west side highway!!
TeriM: Right on.
i have been carrying my cellphone lately... i think photography might be the best weapon cyclists ever had (besides of course doing super defensive driving)

wow what a bunch of turds on here. The guy was doing 25 in a 30 zone. The car struck and dragged him 4 blocks. That is entirely wrong, regardless of what was said or where the bicyclist was. Sure bikes slowing traffic sucks, but physically striking someone is a whole different level. Shame on you turds for not recognizing that
I see Fox staff has the same regard for people outside the studio as they do for the truth inside the studio. This is anything but surprising.
Anger on the road is too comon. Anybody who rides on two wheels, powered or not, watches closely for potential accidents. When I comuted by motocycle I could expect to have my right of way violated at least twice a week. In forty years of biking only two cars have managed to make contact, only one soft take down. Vigilence here can work.
25mph is the speed limit for traffic in Central park. 35mph on roads adjacent to the park. Cyclists have the right of way on all roads inside the park.
Wait for the trial where all the facts will come out.
Jhoffa you're an idiot
That kind of attitude is going to land your butt in jail one day.
You can't just run over people who get in your way.
talk about being a self important asshole. you're one to talk.
There's something to be said about the split personalities of people, and those same people when wrapped in 2 tons of steel. I guarantee if they were both walking they would have thrown down!
Think about it.
*wouldnt, sorry
I recently read a study that stated that the majority of cyclists (around the 90% range) hit are hit by male drivers under the age of 40. When the rules of the road demand that cyclists have to ride on the road then many of these giant vehicle testosterone warriors should just chill. Steel against flesh is no fair fight.
Road rage is a big problem. I think it's because impulse control is virtually nonexistent in American culture, as for example, in over-eating and other forms of consumption. Reckless driving for a commercial driver carries a big penalty in terms of their being able to continue with their livelihood. Stiffer penalties need to be applied to road rage drivers such as loss of license for a few years.
He didn't leave the scene of an accident. He took the accident with him.

Point of information: Pedestrians have the right of way....cyclists DO NOT! They must follow the same rules as motorized vehicles.
I live in Chicago and during the summer these idiot bicyclists from Critical Mass bike through the city ignoring all traffic laws - running through red lights, not obeying stop signs and the police do nothing about it. They hold up traffic and act all self righteous. One of them hit my friends car with his bike lock as my friend went through a red light as my friend had a green light. As far as I am concerned if any of them get killed it's their own fault and I am siding with the Fox News guy on this one; even though I detest Fox News! As far as I am concerned they should all be arrested!
There's a lot of anger against bicyclist here.
Sounds like the incident involved a driver deciding to drive over someone confronting him. No matter how pesky bicycle riders are, there's little excuse for ramming one or deliberately trying to use your car to clear a path through another human being.
I hope he has good insurance. He's going to need it.
I love it when JHoffa throws a tantrum, he self-appoints himself a nazi every day and then cries when he see's someone else do it. LOL!
Boy, please do go read the original report. (linked below) It sure sounds like this driver very deliberately and sadistically endangered this biker's life. Not attempted murder, but something in that category, like assault with a deadly weapon. If -- if -- the bike rider was being a jerk, it doesn't matter. Allow us to kill every jerk in our lives, and we'll all be dead, and the last guy will have to bury himself. Enough, already, with the rage, folks. Enough with the rage, Fox.
http://gawker.com/5284865/exclusive-fox-newser-accused-of-dragging-cyclist-through-central-park
I am not crazy about cyclists either, but I wouldn't run one down.
Let's see, the one guy is a writer for Fox News, and drives an SUV in New York City, the other guy is a bicyclist. On the strenght of these facts most of the commentors seem to feel that the latter guy is more like to be the asshole ( than the guy who deliberately ran him over). Reallymakes one proud to be an American.
Full disclosure here: I can't say I love riding behind a biker who thinks he's going fact, but in fact is going slooooooow.
There's a big difference between NOT knowing you've caught a biker on your bumper and seeing him laying on the hood of your car as you drag him 4 blocks.
We can't afford to have a parade of these going through the courts, but giving them all this attention might let people know of the dangers of both bike riding and of not paying attention when you drive. If he knew he was dragging someone with his car then it is a serious serious crime.
Considering the way this event occurred, if accounts here are right, you could probably just ask the two people and get a fairly accurate account of the actual events. I doubt either really wants to clam up and lie about 'being right'.
Dear Drivers,
Cyclists have the right of way. Stop taking out your psychological issues on cyclists! As soon as a light turns green, you honk your horn. When you come across a bicyclist, you get all bent out of shape. So what if you have to change lanes or go around? You're rolling along in a soon-to-be museum relic (whether or not it's gas powered) so be a bit more humble, and a little more human.
Dear Cyclists, (in cities)
Stop running red lights. Stop weaving all over the road when there are cars DIRECTLY behind you. Cyclist boys, specificallly: Eat some food already. So many of you look like malnourished hipsters on your identical fixies--you all look the SAME! No wonder people want to run you over!
The cyclist was obviously a socialist,
All of you cycling supporters need to experience being a pedestrian on one of the major avenues in Manhattan. Cyclists routinely think they don't need to stop at red lights and keep zipping straight through at their fastest clip as people are in the crosswalk. Delivery people are the worst offenders. One of these days one of these delivery cyclers is going to get smacked down by a crosswalker.
In my perfect world the fat, cigar smoking Fox turd is innocent of leaving the scene of an accident.
What?
Where's the justice? You say!
The courts decide it was not an accident but attempted manslaughter.
Bubba on Cell Block F says, "Let's play jail for a few years Mr.Fat-Fuck-Faux News-SUV guy.
You can be the new guy.
Bitch."
Ok, back to reality.....
As a New Yorker I don't ride my bike anymore because of asshole drivers. I do make sure to watch the bikers. I get honked at and cursed if I give the right of way to a biker or pedestrians. I was screamed at one time because I stupidly allowed a woman and her baby to cross the street. I asked the offender if I should be running over the family so he could get to his destination 2 minutes sooner. People are just too selfish and self-involved - that extends to bikers, pedentrians and drivers. If you want respect, you have to give respect.
Yes, bikes MUST follow the rules of the road!!!! They must stop when the light is red and also watch for pedestrians.
Dan Broderick, attempted to flee the scene of an accident. When the cyclist tried to prevent him from his 'Hit an Run,' He ran the cyclist down with his SUV. That sure sounds like attempted murder to me. Hey, Dan way to go, you sure make FOX look 'Fair and Balanced!"
CYCLIST is not equal to PEDESTRIAN. Cyclists, in traffic lanes, have no more right of way than any other vehicle in the lane. Cyclists must obey all road laws as if they were in an automobile.
While I cannot condone a person using their vehicle in a dangerous manner to counter a verbal threat, this cyclist needs to educate himself before he is killed by someone. Pull over and phone the cops. You don't have any authority to stop another individual based on your perception of their actions.
This cyclist acted like an asshole and almost got himself killed for it. The fox reporter will deserve whatever punishment he receives as well, but had this turned out more predictably (the cyclist getting run over), I doubt his sense of justice would outweigh the severity of his injuries.
Stupid. Plain and simple.
Many of these comments are written by Maniacs who have no compunction in wrapping their tons of metal around a human body-the perversion of humanness brought about by sitting in a motor is a disease. You don't just kill people for your right of precedence-unless evidently you are american.
Maybe it's just me, but who the fuck cares who "started it". If you are riding a bicycle, motorcycle, or driving a car, you are most likely not six years old, so enough with "he started it".
If you are cut off, you're cut off. That is not license to harass or hit another person. If someone is going too slow, that is not a green light to blast over them.
What the fuck is wrong with people?
ran over cyclist and dragged him for four blocks after being confronted?
I'd call that attempted murder!!!
So a car driving through Central Park... didn't exercise sufficient care and was confronted..?
Hey,baby, this is Central Park, NYC.. that has several very limited roadways through it,true. But it still is a PARK. For pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, etc. Would Mr Flipping Reporter run over a granny for confronting him for unsafe operation?
Its tough enough for we,as a people, to share the roadway, regardless of mode. . I have driven for years and can tell you stories of unsafe operation by road users of any mode. Human emotion should not drive our behavior on the roadway. Knowledge of traffic laws, good safety practice, and yes, a fair amount of patience should be our operating manner, not an inflated sense of privelage.
Being drug for 4 blocks, I bet the cyclist suffered more injury than the defendent, and will bear scars from that event much longer than he who inflicted that injury.
It could have been a case of manslaughter or worse.
I've got to admit, I see a lot of urban bike riders who do incredibly stupid stuff. passing on the right in turn lanes is a common one that comes to mind.
She was exaggerating just a bit about "all" messengers being junkies.
I had a friend who was a bike messenger and she used to swing at cabs with her U-Lock. Just as an interesting recollection.. she said "all" the bike messengers were serious drug users which I thought was funny considering their job is basically full-time exercise. By serious I mean everything from frequent light drug use to hard -core narcotic users.
BTW.. that lock-swining anarchist is almost out of medical school now.
Tonight on Fox News; Central Park Cyclist throws himself under Fox News maker upper's car.
"Fuck him.. Too bad it didn't kill the stupid bastard."
I hope you have young children; I hope they ride bikes; I hope they are run down, in front of you, and that they are left paralyzed for life.
Then, I can say, fuck them, too bad it didn't kill the stupid bastards.
Cycling northbound through Central Park during that time is a nightmare.
Cars are required to go round clockwise (two lanes one way).
Immediately to their left is a bike lane (half a car-lane's width). Cyclists are also supposed to go round clockwise, and 99% of them do.
Immediately to THEIR left is another small lane, for joggers/peds. I believe peds are supposed to go clockwise too. But in their case about 1/3 of them don't. The result is that the "jogger" lane doesn't stand a chance of being wide enough for all of them passing each other going in opposite directions, so the whole jogger/bike area is a free-for all of walkers, speed-walkers, runners, skaters and bikes. At that time of day a biker who wants to go biking speed is usually forced into the left-most car lane.
The area that this happened in is the worst (busiest) of the whole loop too.
I feel for that biker. I get pissed at the drivers who feel like they shouldn't have to deal with the bikes in THEIR LANE (one of their lanes). And then I get pissed at the clockwise joggers who force ME into the position of overflowing the buffer into the car lane.
Tensions are always high between cars and bikes in NYC. To me, this loc was an obvious flashpoint that I loathe having to deal with.
Frankly, I think they could maybe reduce the cars to one or zero lanes at that time, and/or start enforcing counter-clockwise jogging.
it's a good thing we live in a healthy country
Most of the anti-cyclist, anti-pedestrian, comments here have been written by the same person using different
screen names. In the old days people like this would be safely housed away in a state mental institution.
These self centered haters are consumed by hate.
Its all they have, hate is all they know, its not life, its their self made hell.
Hate is a Entity that feeds on the haters.
Haters are slaves to that Entity.
I hope FOX News airs a program showing how that cyclist's disembodied brain reacts to recordings of George W. Bush speeches ... in a controlled environment of course.
The cyclist may have been acting rashly, but just why exactly is this an excuse to kill him? By this rationale, you can simply go and kill whoever your feeble sickened mind tells you to. 4 blocks and this idiot couldn't stop? Fuck him, and the SUV he rode in on.
"Like I said, too bad he didn't kill the stupid fucker."
Oh, yes.. this is how civilized people behave.. killing each other because we just can't seem to bother to give a little birth to others.
"Unfortunately for him, the SUV driver did the exact same thing.
If Mr. Bicycle cop would have kept his fucking head, and not been afflicted with a case of CUSI (Completely Unwarranted Self Importance) this never would have occurred. "
So, if you don't like someone being pissed that you're a fucktard, just run them over.. it's ok, you're in an SUV.. After all, you didn't REALLY buy that SUV because of .. uh.. CUSI, was it?
Here's a clue for you.. 95% of Americans have CUSI, and the right-wing and corporations out there like it that way, it sells more garbage that kills the planet and bring more profits to them. Guess what else, those 5% that _are_ kind of important aren't CEOs or members of the typical right-wing.
