Conservative Web radio host arrested for inciting violence - again

The white supremacist radio host and blogger who was arrested earlier this month on charges of inciting violence against lawmakers has now been arrested yet again for attempting to incite violence against Chicago judges following a recent ruling they made upholding handgun bans.

According to the U.S. attorney's office, postings on Turner's web site included photos of the judges and addresses for them, with statements such as: "Let me be the first to say this plainly; These judges deserve to be killed."

The three judges have long served on the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals: Frank Easterbrook, the current chief judge; and Richard Posner and William Bauer.

Turner, 47, was charged with threatening to assault and murder the three judges with intent to retaliate against them for performing their official duties. He is to appear in court tomorrow in U.S. District Court in Newark, N.J., but the charges were brought in Chicago, where the judges work.

Turner, known for his white supremacist views, has been on the radar of federal authorities before. In the wake of the murder of the husband and mother of U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow in 2005, Turner's web site carried the courthouse addresses of appeals court judges who had ruled against white supremacist Matthew Hale in a civil case.

His prosecutor? Patrick Fitzgerald -- the man who went after and secured convictions against Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff in the CIA leak trial.

Internet postings on June 2 and 3 proclaimed "outrage" over the June 2, 2009, handgun decision by Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook and Judges Richard Posner and William Bauer, of the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, further stating, among other things: "Let me be the first to say this plainly: These Judges deserve to be killed." The postings included photographs, phone numbers, work address and room numbers of these judges, along with a photo of the building in which they work and a map of its location.

Turner, 47, of North Bergen, N.J., was arrested this morning after FBI agents went to his residence to execute a search warrant. He was charged with threatening to assault and murder three federal judges with intent to retaliate against them for performing official duties in a criminal complaint filed today in U.S. District Court in Chicago. He is scheduled to have an initial court appearance at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael A. Shipp in U.S. District Court in Newark.

"We take threats to federal judges very seriously. Period," said Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, who announced the charges with Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The United States Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey and the FBI Office in Newark are providing local assistance.

The official filing against Hal Turner is available in PDF here.

Hal Turner?... I was hoping they were talking about Michael Savage.

Except for the nazism there's scant little difference.

  3. Dionysis

Good. I hope the asshole spends a year or two in the slammer. I can think of a few more wingnuts that richly deserve the same.

  5. Let's see,,
We have O'Reily,Joe in the morning scar, and savage that all should be charged !

I could list the charges,,but anybody that's listened to the above should know..

    Maybe the, YOU BETCHA gal,,

  6. tonybinca

Turner may or may not be a white supremacist, but he has a point (aside from the killing part). The judges should actually be stripped of their authority. No one can legally rule against the 2nd amendment.

And no, the 2nd does not only apply to militias.

  7. bintexas

Why just him? I've heard Savage, O'Reilly, Coulter and others of that ilk do the exact same thing . . . why no charges against them. Coulter said that S.Ct. Justice Stevens should be poisoned. Why no charges against her? Just because she later said that the remark was "said in jest," doesn't mean that she was not inciting violence against a S.Ct. justice.

  8. bintexas

tonybinca . . . yeah, it pretty much does. You can't just cut off everything on the other side of the comma like Scalia did. Talk about your "activist" judge.

    Nice try, though.

I hope while he is there his "gun" cleaning skills expands

  10. GIVE HIM THE CHAIR!!

Another right wing fanatic going to prison! Halleluja!! Hopefully O'Reilly, Coulter, Limbaugh, Cheney, Rove, Hannity, etc. will be next.

When a dog continually bites someone society puts it down.

Why do we differentiate this when it comes to an animal that walks upright and has an apposable thumb? People are just as likely to do crazy shit as a mean dog.

Why can't judges rule that the 2nd amendment has boundaries like other amendmentds? We have free speech but you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theatre just for giggles. At least not without risking an arrest. That limits the 1st amendment doesn't it?

I personally believe they are tyrants in black robes and we need to do something about them! How many of you lefties advocated Bush and Cheney be hung for war crimes? Bush and Cheney can say they were only full filling their Constitutional duties and claim you are seditious! I myself believe they are war criminals and murderers!
The US government murders men, women, and children around the world and often times through our proxies!

  17. ER

Douchebag idiot!!! It wasn't that long ago that a federal judge's husband and mother were murdered in her home...in Chicago. She was the target. The shooter turned out to be a "bitter plaintiff" who then committed suicide. She had already had Matthew Hale trying to solicit murder for hire targeting her for holding him in contempt of court.

Turner SHOULD be arrested and tried. He's soliciting for them to be assassinated, the only difference is he wants it free of charge. And it wouldn't surprise me to learn that some of Hale's followers are loyal listeners of Turner.

all this talk of hatred and killing is destroying our society. whether its hate from catholics, muslims, republicans, democrats , or any belief system, we must try and teach our children tolerance, acceptance and NO HATRED!!!! I am distugusted when i see O'Reilly argue that Tiller(abortion doctor) was a baby killer. what he did was legal and he helped mom's in desperate situations with deformed or highly diseased babies. Instead of criticizing the jerk who murdered Tiller, he went after the victim. It seems O'Reilly is okay with going to Iraq and killing 800,000 Iraqi's or when Isreal attacked Palestine and killed over 1000 children, those children did not count. These people who incite hatred are creating more violence in our society. However, when they complain about Keith Obermann, I simply tell righties that Keith speaks FACTS. When he attacks Bush/ Darth Vader, he attacks on facts. He does not invoke violence or killing or goes after the victim. O'Reilly is a real bastard!!!! Yet no one sees how dangerous his views are.

"dionysis: you mean like some of the commenters on this site?"

If some of the commentators on this site also have a radio show or other public forum where they can exhort people to violence, then the answer would be 'yes'. Giving one's opinion, regardless of how goofball it may be, is one thing. Doing so with the aim of stirring up violent action, or creating a climate where dimwitted clowns will act on it is something else.

  20. Dionysis

"I personally believe they are tyrants in black robes and we need to do something about them!"

You may be right, but there are ways to "do something about them" that don't include calls to murder.

"How many of you lefties advocated Bush and Cheney be hung for war crimes? "

I've not advocated they be "hung for war crimes" but I do think that if there is a shred of justice left in this world, they would be prosecuted for war crimes (and other things, such as treason) and spend some quality jail time.

"Bush and Cheney can say they were only full filling their Constitutional duties and claim you are seditious!"

Yeah, well the whole world knows they are chronic liars anyway. And so what? They claimed all kinds of shit; trashing the Constitution is not a presidential "duty."

"I myself believe they are war criminals and murderers!"

If you're referring to Bush and Cheney, then you're in good company in this belief.

"The US government murders men, women, and children around the world and often times through our proxies!"

Yes, this is true, and has been for many decades.

  21. westcoastliberal

Radio stations that carry this guy's program are licensed by the FCC to broadcast. When that license comes up for renewal the public has the right to file a "petition to deny" renewal of the license and it's my opinion spouting vile hatred is certainly a reason to do so.

  25. Herc

Neo-Nazis and Muslim Brotherhood were behind the Oklahoma City bombing, World Trade Center basement bombing of 1993 and the 9/11 attacks. But in the case of the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. did not follow the trail to Neo-Nazis in American intelligence and to Atta's Neo-Nazi friends from overseas in places like Germany, Switerland and Belgium.

"Let me be the first to say this plainly; These judges deserve to be killed." - That's not a death threat, it's an opinion.

I found like 70,000 other instances of peoples saying 'so and so deserved to be killed' that didn't involve judges, why wern't they arrested Too busy jerking each other off? They probably do deserve to be killed if they're that fucking touchy.

'"We take threats to federal judges very seriously. Period," said Patrick J. Fitzgerald' - It wasn't a threat, this guy is a crybaby.

Where I live in the retarded deep south, Fox radio or as it is know around here "the wireless" starts in the early AM with a right-wing local boy then rolls into Rush, then Sean, then Savage and ends up with Mark Levin for almost 24 hour incitement of the cortically challanged. Let's not stop with the mouths but go after the microphones as well. Fox is the greatest enabler of hate on the air.

  32. marinessuck

I guess RAW disagrees with me as well since it pulled my post. I say again, I didn't see a threat in what the man said or wrote.

First, you are apparently one of those false conservatives who a) doesn't have a clue what conservatism is and b) believes that anyone who disagrees with your false impression of conservatism, is, by default a "leftie." Y

I am a moderate conservative who believes that Bush, Cheney and many of the PNAC members of the first Bush administration are guilty of war crimes. These folks are not and were not "conservatives," they are neo-conservatives. Two ENTIRELY different philosophies which have very little in common except for warmongering. Do I wish that they be hanged? Nope, because I don't believe in capital punishment. Jailed? You bet, until they rot. They ordered the deaths of many, many thousand of innocent Iraqi and American citizens by invading a country which had not attacked us, did not threaten to attack us, nor had the means to attack us and they KNEW it.

  34. Xrepublican

Why do sick reich-wing republiKKKon bother reading and commenting on Raw Story? Don't you spew enough hate on other sites like Drudge, Lush, O'Lielly, Weiner, and on and on and on. Threats are just that, threats and if you are a law abiding citizen you'd realize threats are dangerous, especially in this gun ridden society we now call Amerika. How sad that the America I grew up in and love is gone forever because of reich-wing bushs and their troops of hate.

Your post is childish nonsense. Like it or not it's a crime to make that kind of threat and for good reason ... especially to a judge or someone in the public eye ...

If you can't see a direct threat in what this guy wrote and posted then I am certain you and Turner belong to the same delusional "hate" club and should haul off and just get married to each other ...

What if someone in the media posted your picture and gave out your address to people who hate your guts and then directed those people to kill you?

Herc, I don't know where You get Your info from.....
BinTexas, I agree w. You. Yet, a jail is not enough for them simply b/c the next administration might pardon them and set them free to do it all over again ( and then some). For people that have committed treason, mass murder and high crimes against the humanity_ there is only one punishment that fits : DEATH BY HANGING and a stake trough the heart.

    CONSERVATIVES ARE MENTALLY DAMAGED.

Thing to note is that this angry pathetic radio prick was as is always the case a "conservative" ... which is the same thing as saying he is a weak coward with a need to blame others for his own totally inadequate mental capacities.

  43. God hasn't won anything yet

Now, I have an idea. Here at RS, one can meet some solid people among those that post. I have very little respect for the RS ( admittedly much better than HuffPo- if that is any consolation), but I love to read the posts and I have learned a lot from You Ladies and Gents.
This is my idea: why don't You people there that are more qualified ( than me) get organized and start a Peoples Justice Tribunal that will (un-officially) charge and prosecute :
GWB, Cheney&the neo-cons, Rumsfeld, Tenet, etc with all the crimes they've committed since 2000. Obama has sold us out and him and Holder won't do nothing to the criminals. At least WE can gather and expose all the facts in a civilized and organized manner.

  44. Satan

Turner's web site included photos of the judges and addresses for them, with statements such as: "Let me be the first to say this plainly; These judges deserve to be killed." - Adresses of their courthouse, how hard is that to find? haha.

'TO: "Satan" and the righties living under the bridge who like to pop out and scare people.' - I'm pretty well towards the left on most issues. I've met only a few righties under bridges.

"Like it or not it's a crime to make that kind of threat and for good reason ... especially to a judge or someone in the public eye ..." - What was the threat specifically? He said he thought they deserved to be killed, that's an opinion many people share about many people. I said it, where are the police? Have me arrested for saying they probably do deserve to die, for being so touchy. Please, arrest me for debating the meaning of words, fucking retard.

I'll say it again, "if they're that fucking touchy, they probaby do deserve to die". Saying that you think someone deserves to die isn't a threat, it's pretty simple and I think you're the one engaging in childish behavior, although I'll admit I'm not immune to that, bitch.

"If you can't see a direct threat in what this guy wrote and posted then I am certain you and Turner belong to the same delusional "hate" club and should haul off and just get married to each other ..." - Well then you're sure of something thats not true then, arn't you? Like I said, I lean left and any conservative leanings I have are pretty well dissimiliar to the type of conservatism we have in America today or espoused by racist nutjobs like Turner. Although I'll admit I love me a nice gun.

I don't see ideology as a team sport, buddy, you obviously do and you're what's wrong with this country, people that put their ideology over simple truths. You're after this guy because he's right wing and you're attacking me because you stupidly thought I was right wing for defending his right to hold an opinion, because you see ideology as a team sport. Did you vote for Obama too, how's you team doing with the war, bitch?

"What if someone in the media posted your picture and gave out your address to people who hate your guts and then directed those people to kill you?" - Sounds like you're threatening me, I'm going to call the police, waaaa!

Feel free. Come to 1411 4th Ave, Seattle and yell 'Satan' up towards a few floors anytime, M-F from 10am-3pm and I'll come down and you can give it a fucking shot as long as I'm not to busy with work or my boss isn't looking. You can take pictures of me or you can try to kill me, lol. Also, he didn't direct anyone to kill, you're making things up BECAUSE YOU'RE IDEOLOGICALLY OPPOSED TO HIS VIEWS. That makes you kind of a phony. If you want you can just stand down there with a sign that says 'Hail Satan' around lunchtime, if you don't like yelling. So, now that you've elicited my approximate location from me your threats towards my life are valid and will be dealt with appropriately by the proper authorities. I'm calling the police right now, lol!

Turner is so fringe that most people would have never known anything about it if it wasn't widely disseminated in the media.

"You would all poo in your shorts ... it's incitement and advocating violence or death against you personally ..." - Yeah, I'm really scared as you can tell. Help! Help!

"You're all good when it's not about you ... typical right winger ... always looking for a hook to unleash your deep seated anger." - Like I said before, I lean left, I also find your use of the ellipses a bit troubling, but thanks for only using three dots. On the ellipses, I lean right.

"No wonder you guys live under bridges in the dank." - Homeless people live under bridges in the dank, I talk to them every day, they're pretty nice people for the most part.

Once we start heading down this petty road of throwing people in prison for wild interpretations of their words, this country is done. It probably already is.
