60,000 US inmates sexually abused each year, report says

For those who can't read the above: WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal commission on prison rape has concluded that the risk of being attacked depends greatly on the type of prisoner, and where the inmate is locked up.

More than 60,000 inmates are sexually abused every year, according to a report being made public Tuesday by the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission. The eight-member panel was formed under the 2003 Prison Rape Elimination Act.

Based on a 2007 survey of tens of thousands of incarcerated people, 4.5 percent of those surveyed reported being sexually abused in the previous 12 months - and more prisoners claimed abuse by staff than by other inmates.

    Ahh.. the added benefit of psychological torture and the STATE can wash it's hands free of the "cruel and unusual" b/c it is inmate on inmate, while a paid off white trash ignorant redneck guard looks the other way.

  2. grammarian

    Its = belongs to it
    It's = It is

    "The State can wash its hands"....

    There's no need to bash white people or any group to make a (grammatically sloppy) point.

  3. How many of those 60,000 are incarcerated on Drug Charges? End the War on Drugs: The legal discrimination of people exercising their God-given right to have exclusive control over their bodies; and the public subsidization of Drug Lords.

    Natty, enough with the racist characterization of guards. Prison guards come in all ethnicities. The big problem is guards have developed the "I only work here, they live here." attitude and have lost control of the prison. Added to that gangs find out about guards personal lives, addresses, families etc. and intimidate them. A lot of the sex abuse is part of a prison economy based on violence and exploitation.

    Hey Bart. The only prisons I know about are the LARGEST IN THE WORLD in Huntsville Texas. And from my bird's eye perspective they were mostly RED NECKS. Matter of fact the only way to tell the difference between the inmates and the guards is the color of their polyester uniform.

    To grammeriarn. Go be a skool teacher. they need you desperately.

    Sounds normal for US as many jails are ran with the blueprint of Gitmo. Rape really isn't a crime in the US under the Republican Christian Moral Values. We've heard Foley committed no crime and other Law Makers who raped woman were cheered for their conduct. Now back in 2000 a complaint was filed by a young woman who was raped by then Gov. Bush as she was asked to drop the complaint because Bush was running for President. The lady refused and soon later she was found dead. Many Gitmo detainees men/woman/children were raped by the US prison guards and CIA. Now we are who we are as we see our Law Makers using God's name while having sex with prostitutes, affairs, looking for sex in men's rooms, selecting children while voting on Iraq bill and much much more. We now have a Pro-Life murderer who killed to stop abortions while he is a child molester.

  7. Sadly this does not shock me in the slightest. Prisons are filled with criminals and gangster on both sides of the law.

    We need to step back and take a look at our society as a whole. Our prison system has a larger population than many countries. We certainly have a larger population per capita than any other country. Why is that?

    What is it in our society that causes that?

    Chris, one of the MAIN reasons I think is multi-culturalism. We do not care about each other or see one another as brothers and sisters. It is natural. It is what our eyes see and our ears hear. My neighbors don't speak my language. Prime A1 example of this would be The Gaza. Operation Cast Lead. Kill 1500 children at a UN school and only a few hear about it. Let alone care. And these are supposedly children of God. Kids should be FORCED to listen to Bob Marley in school. One love over and over and over until they it sinks in.

    Jackie:

    The woman's name to which you refer is Margie Schoedinger. She filed her suit against PRESIDENT bush in 2002. Nine months later she was found dead from a bullet wound to the head--it was called a "suicide." Naturally, the MSM completely ignored this story so most people don't even know about this woman.

    A couple months prior to her death, Schoedinger said she was surprised the case wasn't covered more because "it is true......People have to be accountable for what they do, and that's why I'm pursuing it."

    Some very evil creatures disguised as humans walk and have walked the halls of our govt. for quite some time now. How have we allowed these human abominations to walk among us with such impunity?

    Remember, evil prevails when good people do nothing. And since so many "good" people prefer to keep their heads in the sand rather than confront and hold these criminals accountable, we shouldn't be too suprised that evil is indeed prevailing.

    @grammarian:

    Would its' be appropriate for your sensibilities?

    I assume that the apostrophe is possessive if used in that way.

    BTW, its can also be the plural of it.

    To the grammarian commenting here, I will point out my own grammaticals errors to save you the trouble: I incorrectly said, "the woman's name to which you refer..." I more correctly should have said "The name of the woman to whom you refer..."

    Having been a victim myself, I can say this with authority. Prison rapists are usually the "top dogs" in their wing. These guys get extra privileges from the guards because they do their dirty work. If the guards don't like you then you can expect a visit in the showers sooner rather than later. Having said that, guards, psychologists and nurses that work in prisons can use their positions to force inmates into sex and then call it consentual. To answer the question about why so many people are in jail think about this. Is it easier to repair social problems like drugs and unemployment or just send people to jail?

    "more prisoners claimed abuse by staff than by other inmates"

    ... Holy Cow! Why isn't this finding on the front page of every paper?

  17. Steve

    Most people don't care what happens to people in jail.

    Out of sight, out of mind.
