Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) is attracting a lot of attention for his proposal to audit the Federal Reserve bank, the independent financial powerhouse that creates and regulates our money.
In other words, as he wrote in Forbes recently, Paul is 'Fed up' with the complete lack of transparency.
The Federal Reserve's recent and unprecedented actions in the realm of monetary policy have provoked a backlash among the American people. Trillions of dollars worth of loans and guarantees have been provided to Wall Street firms, while Main Street Americans suffocate under harsh taxation, the prospect of higher debt levels and increasing inflation. These events have awakened many Americans to problems with the Fed's loose monetary policy, the bubbles it has created in the past and the potential hyperinflation it might cause in the future.
One of the fallacies of modern economics is the idea that a central bank is required in order to keep inflation low and promote economic growth. In reality, it is the central bank's monetary policy that causes inflation and depresses economic growth. Inflation is an increase in the supply of money, which in our day and age is directly caused or initiated by central banks. All other things being equal, inflation results in a rise in prices. A so-called "mild" rate of inflation of 3% per year leads to a 56% rise in prices over a 15-year period. Even a "low" rate of inflation of 2% per year leads to a 35% rise over that same period. How is that conducive to long-term growth?
A common misconception is that the Fed is completely independent of political pressures. While the Fed has far too much authority to make agreements with foreign governments and central banks, or create temporary liquidity facilities, the governors and--more important--the chairman, are appointed by the president.
"In essence, the bill requires an audit of the Fed's activity which shall be made available to Congress," wrote Glenn Greenwald a couple weeks ago. "What possible arguments exist against this bill? Who opposes an audit of the Fed's activities and why?"
As if to answer Greenwald's question, days later Forbes published an opinion contrary to Paul's, wrapped in a seemingly reasonable argument. Consider this, by Thomas F. Cooley:
Extraordinary times require extraordinary actions. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the bold policy moves undertaken by the Federal Reserve over the past two years. The financial crisis forced the Fed to be aggressive and creative in its attempts to provide liquidity to credit markets that had frozen up. These were necessary steps, and mostly applauded.
But the very boldness of its actions has put the independence of the Fed at risk. Congress is now clamoring to audit the Fed, and some of the policy proposals currently under discussion at the Federal Reserve will only increase the threat to its independence.
Before we deconstruct these issues, let's focus on why it is important to have an independent central bank. The answer is quite obvious. An independent central bank can focus on monetary policies for the long term--that is, policies targeting low and stable inflation and a monetary climate that promotes long-term economic growth. Political cycles, alas, are considerably shorter. Without independence, the political cycle would subject the central bank to political pressures that, in turn, would impart an inflationary bias to monetary policy.
Paul's bill, H.R. 1207, has 165 co-sponsors. Its fate is currently in the hands of the House Financial Services Committee's 71 members. Almost all the committee's Republicans have co-sponsored the bill and two Democrats have joined their numbers.

Transparency and the accountability it automatically implies, taken alone, put little to no UNDUE or counterproductive political pressure on any unelected position. It DOES put pressure on the major players involved to behave in morally responsible ways toward those to whom they are SUPPOSED to be accountable. I have to be very suspicious of any political resistance to allowing transparency for the actions of the Fed. We, the American public, need to see what they are doing in order to understand who they actually serve.
The only reasonable explanation for resistance to such transparency, in my view, is to conceal who it is the Fed actually serves. If that's not the only reason, it should be exceedingly obvious to anyone half capable of coherent, well-reasoned thought that it is clearly and at the very least a possible motive. Considering the extent and power of Fed actions in terms of their practical impact on the daily life of every citizen, that simple fact alone is enough to justify the introduction of full transparency to Fed activities.

Brief addendum to my previous comment: Let's see you poke a hole in that logic, Mr. Cooley. Independence is not dependent on the ability to indulge in covert behavior. The exact opposite statement seems to be the crux of your argument, Mr. Cooley, even if you didn't make it explicit.

Just a heads up the gold in Fort Knox has nothing to do with the Federal Reserve. Since Congress took the country off the gold standard in the 1970's. The Federal Reserve is solely responsible for maintaining the money supply. When you hear about how the Fed raised or lowered interest rates they do that changing how much money is in circulation. What Dr. Paul is trying to uncover is the basics of how the Fed operates and other information like how much money is actually in circulation. In our current system information like the size of the money supply is unavailable to even Congress. It is truly great to see people agree on this issue. The Federal Reserve is not independent. That's the whole point of Ron Pau's bill. In a perfect world it would be, but under Alan Greenspan the Fed became an enabler of Wall Street excess.
In 1996 Greenspan warned of "irrational exuberance" (in the stock market). Four years later, after the Dow Jones Industrials had risen another 60%, he was saying things like, "We don't know a bubble until after it bursts." It was clear Greenspan had decided to play along with Wall Street instead of speaking out against asset inflation. That's not independence, that's kowtowing. When the dot-com bubble burst, the economy segued into a real-estate bubble, which Greenspan enabled by keeping interest rates low and saying nothing about derivative securities which had added dangerous leverage.

You can't not do something due to fears of politicizing the process. For better or for worse Congress is the legislative body of the US and through them is how things like this get done. You just have to cross your fingers and hope for the least grandstanding possible.

I am strongly in favor of the proposed audit of the Federal Reserve. Central banks are frequently the cause of financial mischief on a national scale, and that of the U.S. has become a prime example. It exemplifies the arrogance and misplaced political power of Wall Street in its secrecy and deal-making. Ideally, it would be abolished, but why the fear that the American people should find out what it is actually doing?

Why should the Federal Reserve be audited you ask? Because it is probably the most corrupt financial institution of them all. After leaving Office, President Wilson who allowed the Fed to be created stated that it was the worst decision he had ever made. The very same decision that Jefferson and others have warned us about. But even with these warnings, the Federal Reserve is in and of itself unconstitutional because the Constitution never established a private bank for the country, but rather a US Treasury bank with dollars backed by both gold and silver.
Perhaps the reason an audit of Fort Knox has not taken place since 1958 is that the gold and silver that would be required to back our dollars really isn't there. The closest we came to having a Constitutional currency was back during the Kennedy administration when he allowed the introduction of the Silver Certificate. Sadly, after the death of Kennedy, the Federal reserve pulled those certificates out of circulation and the reason couldn't be any clearer. If there was honest money backed by gold and silver in circulation, the private banking cartel known as the Federal Reserve would be out of business. Yes, of course, the Fed is political at least as far as its chairman and members are appointed by politicians. This is unavoidable and is preferable to having them elected by the American public whose grasp of the complexities of economic policy is surely limited. What would be significantly more political would be to give Congress more power than they already have over the Fed.
A more effective way to check the biases of the Fed members might be to scrutinize their career histories and business relationships, both past and current (I would assume that they are not allowed to have business relationships while they serve on the Fed, but I don't know this for sure).
If banks get audited, they will be exposed as being insolvent.
Senate who is supposed to regulate our monitary system will also be exposed for not upholding their oath of office.

In the fifties and sixties, scientists were predicting technology would bring us 20-hour work weeks within a couple of decades or so. Well, the technology has been developed, but who's reaping the benefits? Ask yourself that one. Workers won the right to a 40-hour work week, but now we've been suckered into having at least two family members sometimes working 50- and 60-hour work weeks in order to buy all the stuff the royal court has suckered us with their advertising into thinking we just have to have.
It is a clear, scientifically certifiable fact that our planet cannot support the level of consumption of the average U.S. citizen if everyone worldwide were to consume anywhere close to our rates. Water seeks its own level and that's what's happening in the world market. Everyone wants what we have. That's just plain impossible and ultimately we have to compete in the world market. Human economies just articulate the flow of energy to restructure the environment. That's really all they do. Even taking oil out of the ground is just restructuring the environment. Then we use that energy to restructure it some more.
So energy and the intelligence with which we articulate its flow to restructure our personal, social, and natural environments is all economies ultimately boil down to. We're not being very intelligent in the way we do that. Worse, those with the most power to do restructuring are doing it in their own, selfish, short-term interests. We let them manipulate us with politics, their advertising, and finally their marketing influence on our very culture itself. This is not in the interests of people in general and certainly not in those of the planet.
So what must happen for things to ultimately go well? Worldwide per capita consumption cannot imitate what we're doing. It just physically cannot happen. So we need to restructure our environment much more intelligently to recycle non-renewable resources and not burn it all up or put it in landfills, rivers, and oceans. Physical resources must be conserved to the highest degree possible because they are clearly not infinite as our past perspective has unwittingly assumed. Also, of course, energy must move ultimately to totally renewable sources.
What, then, is the inevitable conclusion? The ultimate, long-term success of the global economic system toward which we cannot help but move depends not on economic growth in our rate of consumption of physical resources, but the intelligence with which we articulate the restructuring of our environment to improve the true quality of our lives while preserving our finite physical resources to the maximum possible degree.
This is precisely the opposite direction from that in which we've been going. This is not rocket science. That this is ultimately true is so clearly unarguable that it takes very little, and very uncomplicated thought for all people with an open mind to confirm it for themselves.
I think the face of Thomas F. Cooley is the FACE of EVIL.
Not at all surprising. $800 billion dollars disappeared into the maw of banks without a trace. That money was created out of thin air by the Fed, but according to how our economic system works, it will be paid back by every US citizen, rather than the banks.
If Goldman didn't need the money, as they claim, why don't they just give it back? Answer: it is padding this year bonus pool.
But if some honest congressman/woman wanted a few hundred thousand dollars to upgrade insulation in district schools, it would disappear into a committee and never be seen again.
Who really runs the country is obvious.
Of COURSE the right thing to do is to audit the Fed, it's practically criminal negligence to not do it. This has to be the biggest no-brainer bill in my lifetime.

I was kind of with you until you snuck that one in. Technically, raw milk may in fact be healthier. The problem is that what can live in raw milk can kill a human in a few hours. That's why we pasteurize milk.
Despite their best intentions, nobody knows how often milking machines are accidentally contaminated with raw animal fecal matter, or if a machine malfunctions...
Of course the more basic issue is why milk has become such a juggernaut in the food industry. It is ridiculous to consume milk in the quantities that are produced. Absolutely unnecessary consumption, foisted on an unwary populace by a government subsidized and protected industry.
There are plenty of plant foods that are high in calcium and low in fat.
