Joe the Plumber defends calling gays 'queer'

As a former Air America listener from the beginning (until they fired Randy Rhodes and backed Obama), I don't want to be labeled some right wing crazy, but I have to agree with Joe. I for one, never had a problem with gay people until they started to force their agenda down my throat. And I am sickened by the attack upon Miss California for expressing what she thinks marriage is. Why even ask her the question if you aren't going to respect her opinion? I never thought I would say this but I agree with Joe the plumber...

  2. Thomas Jefferson

I'm not defending this dumb b*stard in the least but my sister in law is from Ohio and uses the word "queer" in the manner that joe the dumber claims.

That being said, I believe that joe the dumber is full of sh*t and is using this lame defense to hide behind. Since when is this ignoramous suddenly the literary schollar?

  3. abstrakt thawt

why are we still talking about joe the plumber? can he please just go away now

  4. Rick

Don't worry Joseph, you won't be labeled as crazy.

You'll (rightly) be labeled as a bigot.

  5. Johnson

Why does anyone care what "Joe the Plumber" says? His name isn't Joe. He's not a licensed plumber. His opinions don't count anymore than yours or mine. And if he is, in fact, a good representative of the average American we are in worse shape than I thought.

  6. Gee, I'm not "queer" or anything but, to tell the truth, I don't think I'd let Joe around my kids. They lie anough already.

  7. Dionysis

    Joe,

Did you really mean to use the phrase "force their agenda down my throat" with regard to gays? What would Freud have said?

As for Miss California, the problem with what she said was not her opinion on marriage, but that she came across as a functional moron.

  8. TB

Sorry Rick but you're wrong. Joseph is not a bigot for simply believing and expressing a differing opinion. The people who are being intolerant are the people who only see this as one sided.... the pro gay side. The Miss California example is a prime one. Nobody wants to RESPECT her view point because it's not part of the gay trends in pop culture. Heaven forbid that some beautiful woman doesn't speak for all the gays of the world and agree to gay marriage. So the respect is only one sided. Disgusting.

If someone doesn't want gay people around their kids that's their business and no one else has the right to tell them otherwise. I don't think he's "correct" in his stance but again I'll respect his decision because it's not my family nor my friends. More Americans should take my advice and get their collective heads out of their asses and leave eat other alone. That's what living in a free nation is about. Live and let live.

  9. RevolutionDynamo

What do you mean when you say that gays are forcing their agenda down your throat? Do you mean that you are offended by the fact that they would like to be able to enter into a civil contract of marriage with a person of their same sex, just as their heterosexual counterparts are able to do? Were you also fed up with non-whites during the Civil Rights movement, when they were 'forcing their agenda down your throat'??? How can you say that you're OK with a particular group, until they seek equal rights and responsibilities under the law, and then you're offended? There are plenty of groups or classifications of people who have agendas that I don't agree with at all, that are contantly 'in my face,' but I don't have a problem with them just becasue of that. If I have a problem with them, it's because I don't believe in what they're doing, or what they believe.

So, Joseph, you either have a problem with gay people for who they are, or you don't think that they should have the same right to marry as heterosexual people. If you have an opinion like that, go head and defend yourself and explain why you think the way that you do. Don't lie and say that you're OK with gay people until they start asking for equality under the law...as Rick said, that's some deep-seated bigorty right there.

  10. Joe

I'm going to throw up. This is why he and people like him are less relevant each day.

  11. Enough...

Sweet fancy Moses.. Will this guy just go the hell away? His 15 minutes are long spent and idiots are still giving him a forum for which he can spread his not-so-special brand of good, old fashioned lunacy? HE is the best representation of the new breed of GOP? Wow, they really ARE in trouble. Which, I suppose, is good for the Democrats, but do we have to listen to him?

  12. Brian

This is all posturing for his congressional run in 2012. Though we don't like his antics, there's a bunch of his idiot cohorts who do. This will not be the last time we're greeted with this fool in the news.

This is a message for Joseph (the first post) and Rick (the one who called him a bigot.)
I have had quite a few gay friends who prefer the word 'queer' over anything else. I think, in a way, its better than calling them 'gays.' Thats sort of like calling African Americans 'Blacks.'
African American's, or even Africans themselves are rarely, actually black. Homosexuals, I'm sure of, are not happy all the time. That would be scarily unnatural.
I do agree with Joseph in the fact that the GLBT lobby is getting a little out of control. There's a homosexual representative in the white house right now.... can't they all be happy with that?

  13. woodgas

Label Label Label Here to Market You Kah-Ching!

  14. Chris

Stupid is as Stupid Does... slack-jawed yokel. Who says gay people are child-molesters? He has a sick perverted mind if HE has to think of that. I'm voting for Forest Gump - at least he did good in the world.....

  15. Oklahoma Dem

Coverage of this mental midget is beyond comprehension.

I have to point out that one dumby on this chain is potentially dumber than dumb

Honestly no one ever questioned "ms. Califorinia" or her breast implants right to speak her mind on same sex marriage. She is really free to cling to her big clique of straights if that makes her tingly in the right places.

It is rediculous to say, however, that when pro-gay-marriage people object to her opinion and return with their own opinion, that this is somehow hypocrital or as many boneheads like to say it "liberals preach acceptance of everybody but those who disagree with them". This is not true but more concerningly so overly simplistic it can only come from the mind of a reactionary conservative nitwit.

  16. Rick

TB, of course you have the right to keep your family away from anyone you choose. If you choose us dangerous gay people, I support that right. I'm very, very much a live and let live guy, too. And again, it's your family.

All gay people have been asking for is an even playing field. Look at the governor of Maine's comments about marraige in light of the vote there this week. What a well-thought out discussion and commentary. It's hard to fault his conclusion that civil marraige and civil unions are not the same thing.

Think they are? Talk to a gay or lesbian person who has sat alone in a waiting room while their partner died alone in a hospital room mere feet away - because their relationship didn't fit the legal definition of marriage. Maybe that's the ultimate middle finger gesture from society to gays and lesbians - the final gotcha, as it were.

And if wanting full equality in the eyes of our laws to both recognize full partnerships and avoid circumstances like that one means that we're "in your face" - well, sorry it's so uncomfortable to you or anyone else. But the situation I described is real and happens more often than you would like to think.

Miss Prejean chose to push the discourse way up with her comments after the pageant - about gay people being the majority abusers of children, etc. She was factually wrong, but that doesn't matter to the people who want to believe what she has to say.

Personally, I think it was an incredibly shrewd move on her part - she's gained so much more from this than she ever would've as a simple Miss America. What's next, Palin/Prejean in 2012?

Speaking of Miss Prejean and the Miss America contest...
Did she go into the contest with a knowingly falsified application? Yes.
Did she violate her signed contract post-contest? Yes.
I find it disappointing and ironic that we are elevating this person to some grand spokesperson of the average American when her very existence in the contest was based on falsehood.

But that's a legal issue between her and her contest.

And you either believe in equal rights for all - or you don't.

In my book, if you don't - you're a bigot.

  17. MArtian

I love it. Every time Joe the (not) plumber opens his mouth, it's another embarrassment for the GOP. The more someone like him bashes gays, it makes things better for the homosexual movement toward equality in marriage.

The absurdity of his bigotry, and his ridiculous fears that his "actually homosexual" friends might suddenly turn into, what, some kind of predators on his children?!

It's all about fear, which is the unifying principle of the party of no. Joe/Sam is such a dead giveaway, it's even kind of refreshing in a weird way to read his unvarnished toxic sentiments. I hope he keeps talking - he drags the GOP down every time he opens his nasty ignorant fear-filled mouth.

  18. Kevin

    Dear Joseph,

Democrats don't need, nor want you. Take your ignorant bigotry with you while you join the Republican party. Your ideology is stale and disgusting.

  19. Allen

I would say that the more folks like "Joe", "Rush", and "Sarah" flap their silly gums...the more irrelevant to American life the Republican party becomes.

  20. Bart

I don't mind being called "queer" "honky" or "kraut" but I'm offended that he keeps his gay "friends" away from his children. I wouldn't be his friend if he did that to me and secondly, what if one of his kids turns out to be gay? Disown his child, perhaps?

  21. TIEL

    NO TB,
You are spinning in circles. Life is not a two sided affair. Pro & Con. It is shades of gray. To retort that 'THEY' are only expressing a pro gay side & then use the slogan
'live & let live' is confounding. It is as amusing as a tax delinquent non plumber 'PLUMBER' representing with is left of the fear & smear Conservatives.

  22. Chicago Jeff

What a loser. It's obvious it's just an excuse to be able to use the word "queer" in a derogatory way while making it sound innocent. He knows damn well it's derogatory and wrong. The far right wingnuts continue to think the rest of us are still stupid and will keep falling for their foolishness.

P.S. Joe is such white trash. (But that's not meant to be negative since these words can be found in the dictionary . "White" and "trash" are perfectly normal words.)

  23. On cue, the homophobes arrive to complain or brag about their fear or fantasy concerning various things being "forced down their throats." Why is it *always* in those same words? Until we Democrats actually manage to pass a law mandating gay marriage, these homophobes are practically outing themselves. They certainly stand revealed as ignorant and fear-driven.

  24. Satan

"I for one, never had a problem with gay people until they started to force their agenda down my throat. " - As an American heterosexual, I can honestly say I've never had the impression that anyone was shoving anything gay down my throat. I've never felt the gay marriage debate in any way effected me personally, why would it? What exactly was forced down your throat dude? And what exactly is your problem that you have with gays now that they supposedly have shoved something down your throat? I call total bullshit.

BTW, I'm sickened by the attacks on Miss California too, but what does that have to do with having a problem with gays? Nothing. You sounds oddly like you've always had a problem with gays.

  25. mr

    Hey Joe

We will miss you..you've been good to us.

    Liberal Demacrate

  26. Joseph

In response to your question, I have a problem with "homosexual workshops" being set up in schools to teach children. Google it when you have time. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it, seriously.

  27. 7toedcat

    Joseph,
You are a complete asshole. The only agenda I have as a gay person is that I want to live in peace, make a decent living and be allowed to be who I am. The 'Gay Agenda" is just the right wing way of saying "how dare these queers demand equal treatment." That's all that it's about!!!!!!!! Equality under the law as the constitution states. Heteros have no right to speak on being Gay anymore than whites can speak on being Black. It's folks like you that encourage violance and intolerance. You are promoting gay bashing.
remember...... the louder a homophobe yells, the more I'm convinced that they have their own sexual identity problems.

  28. panamarick

Hello Reader, well old Joe the ass crack is right if your a deminonist.

You see, in Joe's and Palin's world there just an't enough breaking on the wheel or public whippings or burning at the stake, and lets not forget that great old standby hot pokers stuck in all f the worst of places. Joe the ass crack and the queen bitch Palin of the north want so badly to sit in the catbird seat and be the "deciders" They want to be worshiped and yes Reader; they want to be gods. These are the lusts of all potentates.

Mark Twain said "Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education. " Continuing Mr. Twain's thought; and Joe the Plumber is an ass crack that can speak.

  29. Joe's Dad

Hey Joe go clean your room...

  30. Dionysis

I about fell in the floor when Keith Olbermann, in reporting on Joe the Plumber's idiotic notion that the word 'queer' can't be a slur since "it's in the dictionary" retorted "so is 'vacuous' and 'yokel'.

  31. J Lewd

Joseph: Are you sure all you've had "forced. . . down your throat" is gay agenda?

As for TB, why do you even bother to try to reason? You're obviously not very good at it and come across sounding slighly less bigoted than "Joe" the "plumber." No doubt you'd approve of "Joe's" right to not have Mexicans or Chinese around his kids. Here are two words that are also in the dictionary; you can look up the meanings yourself: "tolerance," and "diversity."

Joseph: Your second comment proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that you're a complete and utter moron. Here's something for you to Google: retard.

  32. pc

What caught my attention about Joe the Stupid's remarks is his hypocrisy on this:

"You got the RNC talking about repackaging principles and values to make them hip and cool to the younger generation," Wurzelbacher said. "You can't repackage them. They are what they are. You can't make what they are."

"THEY ARE WHAT THEY ARE. YOU CAN'T MAKE WHAT THEY ARE."

Isn't that the same thing with gay people?

    Effing idiot.

  33. Joseph

J Lewd - Your opinion about me is of no consequence to me. I have expressed my opinion and hoped to spark some intellectual conversation between people. It truly is a sad state of affairs when reply's such as yours are the result. Interesting how someone preaching "tolerance and diversity" is calling me a retard. Nice.

  34. Chicago Jeff

Joseph's last comment is the perfect snapshot of what the wingnut right does... throws out comments like: "I can say queer, it's in the dictionary" or "Obama is planning re-education camps" or "homosexual workshops being set up in schools".

When it (rightly) pisses people off and they respond in anger, the wingnut tries to look as though he is taking the high road: "I have just expressed my opinion... it truly is a sad state of affairs when..." That's such crap and I have to think anyone who can write a coherent sentence has to know it.

  35. Tom Woolf

Using that definition of queer, then the following groups are also "queer", by virtue of their not being "normal", or in the majority:
    - blacks
    - Jews
    - Bald folks
    - Plumbers (less of them than office workers)
    - Political pundits (I don't see them around normally)
    ....

Scary to think what JtP/H (Joe the Plumber/Homophobe) thinks of "compasionate conservatives"...

  36. Rick

Joseph, please warn the rest of us when you start quoting Peter Labarbera - as he's the man who uses the term "homosexual workshops."

"But the best example of this research fetish involving gay sex comes from Wade Richards, a former ex-gay who once worked with Peter LaBarbera of the Illinois Family Institute. Recalling his first meeting with LaBarbera, Richards says he met him at his offices and asked for a tour. LaBarbera took him to a room that was "filled with gay porn." It also had two "leather daddy" outfits on the wall customized with hidden cameras so when LaBarbera wore them undercover at gay S & M events, he could snap photos unnoticed.

But - in that spirit of intellectual discourse that you speak so highly of - I sure would appreciate your addressing some of the issues I pointed out in my post.

And lastly, are you ready to be posthumously baptized as a Mormon for your own good?

  37. I hate nazi's called Joe the plumber

He Joe, Why don't you say that in a dark alley to a faggot in New york and maybe you just might regret it.

  38. J Lewd

Joseph: It is an apt comparison.

    re⋅tard   /rɪˈtɑrd, for 1–3, 5; ˈritɑrd for 4/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [ri-tahrd, for 1–3, 5; ree-tahrd for 4]

    –noun
    4. Slang: Disparaging.
    a. a mentally retarded person.
    b. a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way: a hopeless social retard.

    Any questions?

"[S]park some intellectual conversation between people"? Not even close, bigot. First, it helps to be intellectual to spark intellectual conversation. As for my namecalling, your ignorant statements warrant not only disgust, but derision. We've seen and heard enough from small-minded people like you pretending intelligence but parading ignorance.

  39. J Lewd

Also, if my opinion of you is no matter, there's no further reason for you to post comments on this thread, now is there?

  40. 5by5

Brian, anytime you feel the need to ask the question that you did, "Can't they just be happy with that?" Replace the word "gay" with the word "black" and see how retarded it sounds.

As in, "Blacks got themselves a representative in the White House, can't they just be happy with that?"

Well if that same black person didn't also have the right to marry interracially, or couldn't serve in the military just because they were black, or not be discriminated against in housing, or be protected from being fired from their job just because they were black, how much do you think they'd care that there was a token in the White House?

You know when gay people will be satisfied? When they have the same rights - ALL the same rights that you do.

This is supposed to be a country wherein ALL it's citizens are EQUAL under the law.

This is not the case for gay people now, and until it is, don't expect them to stop agitating for those equal rights any time soon.

Indeed, if you really want this issue to go away, give gay people equal rights nationally and universally, and they'll go about living their lives without bothering your pretty little head.

  41. 5by5

Oh and Joseph, those "homosexual workshops" you spoke of?

They merely teach tolerance, your kids can't "catch the gay" anymore than Joe the Dipshit Plumber's can.

    Nobody's gonna "convert" your kid.

    You know how I know?

Because straight up Jesus freaks have been trying to "convert" gay kids into being straight via far harsher means, and that crap doesn't work either.

Relax please. Better yet, educate yourself, and lose some of the irrational fear.

  42. Mmaze

"It's in the dictionary" Yes, "Joe" (aka Samuel), so is bigot, moron, and fraud. And your picture belongs next to each as the symbol.

  43. What happens when the so called christians try to force their agenda down my throat, or up my ass, as the case may be? Sunday blue laws, school prayer, "we are a christian nation," christian origin myths in schools kind of b.s. I don't get involved in their religion, in fact I want nothing to do with it. They can go sit somewhere and wait for the rapture and leave me and my husband, (Canada, 2007) the f alone.

  44. triky

We should all respect free speech. The last time I checked it wasnt a protection for what is popular.

  45. baconstang

He's just exercising his free speech rights. Just like me when I refer to him as a dim witted loser.

  46. howie bledsoe

Hey Joe, could you please fix my toilet. Its backed up. You`d be the perfect plumber for my toilet, which is also full of shit. thanks.
BTW, Queer does mean strange and unusual. true. And Gay means happy and up-beat. And plumber means someone who fits pipes. and Joe is short for a man named Joseph. Since you are neither a plumber or a Joe, I wont have you tutor my children on proper uses of the English Language. And I am neither unusual not happy.

  47. Stephen Martin

Ok I get it! If I have interpreted Joe "The Plumber" correctly then from my perspective there is no possible way I can be wrong when I say: "Joe the Plumber is Queer". I think he's HUGELY QUEER. He's so Queer, he's the Queerest Queer of All The Queers of the land!

And I'm a Queer to him, so I propose we elect him our fearless leader! WEEEEEEE

Keep him away from any kid. I certainly wouldn't want him teaching any.

  48. kevsters

Check out this hilarious post from another blog about Joe the plumber being a queer himself.

    http://progressnotcongress.org/?p=687

  49. joe "who cares" the plumber

Why does this moron keep running his mouth? He is NOT helping any one. He is only showing the world how ignorant some "americans" are. And He and the Republicans wonder why the world thinks less and less of America with each passing day! It is because Republicans "claim" to be conservatives and "christians" and then they spew out this hate regime and cry about everything that doesn't go their way. For 8 years we heard from the Republicans, who were in control, you follow the President or you are a terrorist. Now that they have no majority, if you follow the President you are a terrorist. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS! Hypocrites!

  50. dan

    Joe has queer friends!!! Ha-Ha

  51. Rika

this sad little person who actually thinks of himself as a real journalist, and fit for public office no less, is a good example of all the republican party has left. he's got the neo-con/teabagger playbook and he obviously has no qualms about using it. it doesn't appear to occur to him and others like him that said playbook is filled with contradictory, illogical, offensive, and altogether idiotic talking points. friend=not allowed to be near my children. is it really that surprising? he's probably denying his own true feelings for joe wilson and covering it up with rampant homophobia.

  52. arrowj

Queer is correct. Man with Man and Women with Women. Its wrong and its sick. I am not a homophobia. Only in Death is the Fear of God Realized.
