Cheney lied repeatedly in speech on closing Guantanamo, paper says

American newspapers don't use the word "lied" as a matter of form -- preferring the more innocuous "false statements," which is supposed to be less biased. But a McClatchy newspaper article Friday says myriad elements of Cheney's terrorism speech Thursday were tantamount to lies -- positing that the former Vice President was guilty of "omissions, exaggerations and misstatements."

Most significant, notes McClatchy's Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay, are comments Cheney made about how valuable intelligence that was collected during "harsh interrogations" actually was.

He quoted the Director of National Intelligence, Adm. Dennis Blair , as saying that the information gave U.S. officials a "deeper understanding of the al Qaida organization that was attacking this country."

In a statement April 21 , however, Blair said the information "was valuable in some instances" but that "there is no way of knowing whether the same information could have been obtained through other means. The bottom line is that these techniques hurt our image around the world, the damage they have done to our interests far outweighed whatever benefit they gave us and they are not essential to our national security."

A top-secret 2004 CIA inspector general's investigation found no conclusive proof that information gained from aggressive interrogations helped thwart any "specific imminent attacks," according to one of four top-secret Bush-era memos that the Justice Department released last month.

FBI Director Mueller Robert Muller told Vanity Fair magazine in December that he didn't think that the techniques disrupted any attacks.

Here's a rundown of the other "omissions, misstatements and exaggerations" Cheney apparently made:

* Cheney said Obama's move to release Bush memos on torture was "flatly contrary" to national security.

- Fact: National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair "strongly supported" Obama's decision to release the memos and said "we do not need these techniques to keep America safe."

* Cheney claimed that the Bush team "moved decisively against the terrorists in their hideouts and their sanctuaries, and committed to using every asset to take down their networks."

- Fact: Osama Bin Laden and his chief lieutenant, Ayman al Zawahri , remain at large. Moreover, the US diverted critical military resources from Afghanistan to Iraq, where al Qaeda was not in force until the US invaded.

* Cheney asserted there was no connection between Bush administration torture and detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib.

- Fact: The Senate Armed Services Committee found in December that Abu Ghraib abuses were linked to approval of Bush administration techniques.

* Cheney said "only detainees of the highest intelligence value" were subjected to torture.

- Fact: Cheney ignored Abu Zubaydah.

* Cheney said "the key to any strategy is accurate intelligence."

- Fact: The Bush administration used bogus intelligence as a pretense for invading Iraq -- including a forgery that purportedly linked Saddam Hussein to an attempt to purchase uranium from Niger.

* Cheney ignored the recently "suicided" al Qaida operative Ali Mohamed al Fakheri, who provided bogus intelligence about Iraq's links to al Qaeda.

* Cheney said Obama selectively released documents on Bush detainee policies.

- Fact: A decision to withhold documents Cheney requested for declassification was made by the CIA under a standing order from President George W. Bush..

* Cheney claimed that only "ruthless enemies of this country" were detained by US agents and sent to secret prisons and Guantanamo.

- Fact: "A 2008 McClatchy investigation, however, found that the vast majority of Guantanamo detainees captured in 2001 and 2002 in Afghanistan and Pakistan were innocent citizens or low-level fighters of little intelligence value who were turned over to American officials for money or because of personal or political rivalries."

More of Cheney's falsifications, omissions and misstatements can be read here.

Also of note? Erstwhile President George W. Bush said he didn't watch either Vice President Cheney or President Barack Obama's speech.

Cheney is on a media tour to taint the jury pool of his future prosecution for war crimes and crimes against humanity and nothing more.

Secretly, he has only disdain for America and it's people, which he has exhibited repeatedly for decades.

  2. FRANK

Cheney a liar... you don't say.... the ghoul lies when his lips move....

  3. GB

cheney is a treasonous greedy SOB and has been lying to Americans for decades ( while enjoying his tax payer paid health care) since his deceitful days with nixon.
Where was the news media when he lied us into a phony war on terror that got thousands of innocent people killed and hundreds of innocent tortured. That's in part why people have become indifferent about newspapers in this country.

  4. bern

BY REPEATING LIES, I MEAN FALSE STATEMENTS CONSTIENTLY, LIKE HE DID FOR 8 YEARS,PEOLE WILL BELIEVE WHAT HE SAYS.

  5. Chris

Cheney, Bush, and Rove - since they LOVE Texas and Texas LOVES the Death Penalty - make them pay for their crimes. Shyt - they have an express lane on the Green Mile - get them in the 3 Tyrants or Less line....

  6. Fred

I'm not sure I'd accept as fact that Al Queda appeared in Iraq after the US attacked. We only have the US' word on that particular viewpoint and they lack credibility with respect to any of their claims against Iraq, past present or future. I do accept that Cheney is full of baloney and that every statement that comes out of his mouth is a lie. Perhaps some sympathetic gov't will arrest him on a vacation and throw him into a dark hole and leave him there.

  10. yknot

Mr. Cheney's public lying became apparent around the time the War in Vietnam was claiming the lives of some 60,000 American service personnel.

A draft dodging chickenhawk/neocon, the ex Vice President now claims that he is the voice of a "patriot".

The most and least that can be said about Mr. Cheney is that not only is he congenital liar but a hypocrite to boot.

  11. Ignatz Fattis

Cheney lies because Cheney is one of those people who believes "The End Justifies the Means". These people cause most of the worlds man made problems.

His justification of torture is a perfect example of "the End justifies the Means".

The end DOES NOT justify the means.

The problem with "The End justifies the Means" is there is no "End" -"The Candidate" Gore Vidal.

What a GREAT speech.....in no way whatsoever...............

  13. If cheney had information on terr. plot foiled why didn't that information get relesed when he was in office.

  14. Bill

I am a bit confused. Cheney lied, Bush I and II lied, Clinton lied, almost every member of all administrations of the past 17 years have lied. The present administration is working over time to catch up. Since January 20th they are ready to capture the record. Remember all those people with high hopes and tears in their eyes on Inauguration Day. Where are they? A high percentage of them are out of a job, having their homes repossessed. The liars, cheats and thieves in trusted with government are still smiling while they clean the crumbs out of the cookie jar. I have been gone a long time. I am confused. Is it a such a shock Cheney is still lying? Why does anyone listen to psychopathic liars. His rating are going up??? With all this talk is there an improvement anywhere? Or while they say things are improving they know what will be happing next month and this year.

The story doesn't say "lie" so your headline is misleading. But, of course, he did lie as we all would understand it. No need to guild the lily with the headline.

The fact that "Dick" Cheney, who is now a private citizen, gets to do the rounds on all the circus venues( Sunday morning propaganda outlets) and is covered by the cable news shows to even spew his horseshit, should tell you how complicit these people are in all of the criminal activity in the District of Criminals. I guess when the networks can't sell any advertising anymore, there is always Halliburton and KBR stocks to buy. What a bunch of losers!!!

  19. osage

The mind cannot run a winning race when the body politic is still suffering from crippling unhealed wounds.

A full and thorough investigation of the innumerable lies and crimes of the Bush/Cheney administration MUST take place in order for America to come together to resolve the multitude of economic and social issues that are dividing and incapacitating our nation. Republicans are desperately trying to avoid the exposures of TRUTH that investigations and prosecutions would lead to by attempting to make certain Democrats politically complicit. Frankly, I don't care how many Democrats might go down politically if ALL AMERICA learns ALL the TRUTH, the whole TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH so help me God!

The Obama administration MUST recognize that moving forward without fully resolving the past is like asking a long distance runner to run the Boston Marathon on two broken legs. The heart might be willing, but expecting to win the race is akin to believing in the Easter Bunny.

  20. How do we know that the "real" intent of the so-called "War on Terrorism" was, is and remains little more than a back door to State-sanctioned RAHOWA (RAcial HOly WAr) that certain weird and unwholesome types can quickly whip up support for among its Good and Loyal Support Base of especially the poor, undereducated and socioeconomically-dispossessed ranks of "poor white trash" needing cheap and cheerful distraction from Reality?

  21. michael

Yeah, good ol' boys. You gotta love them. Joseph Goebbels, the infamous nazi propagandist, said that if you keep telling the same lies over and over again, the people will eventually believe them. I believe Cheney has lied so much he cannot remember what is true! He would love to see an attack on this country so he can be vindicated of his crimes...what it comes down to is he is scared to death of anyone who disagrees with him and may shine light on his dark, little world.
Rejoice, his health is bad and he cannot stay on the planet forever, just wish he would go back to his bunker and be a nasty old man in the dark and leave the rest of the world alone.

Wake up to reality. The majority of people know what blantant liars the entire Bush administration were and are. They spit in the American faces and then sat back and laughed. This comes as no surprise to me at all. Bush, Cheney, Rove the entire bunch of them are nothing but liars. Everything that comes out of their mouths are lies. Why are the american people just now waking up to this fact. Of course he lied and that is why I will not continue to watch or listen to anything they say until they get brought to justice. They are the next thing to being nazi's and that is a fact. They stole from us and our country and that is why America is in the mess and the recession that we are in is because of those lying, conniving, thieving men. They are evil and should be put in prison and all their assets frozen because they have become millionaires off of the war. Now there are still a lot of ignorant Texans that believe they are wonderful. So sad!!!!!!

  25. Lied? How you figure?

    * Cheney said Obama's move to release Bush memos on torture was "flatly contrary" to national security.
    - False Fact: National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair "strongly supported" Obama's decision to release the memos and said "we do not need these techniques to keep America safe."
True Fact: Quoting Obama’s appointee is of no consequence. What IS of consequence is the large number other people in the intelligence services that STRONGLY OBJECTED to the release on national security grounds, AND its demoralizing effect on our intelligence community which exists to protect us. Running them off via accusations and grandstanding political powerplays is a dangerous game to be playing with the very security of our country at stake.
    * Cheney claimed that the Bush team "moved decisively against the terrorists in their hideouts and their sanctuaries, and committed to using every asset to take down their networks."
    - False Fact: Osama Bin Laden and his chief lieutenant, Ayman al Zawahri , remain at large. Moreover, the US diverted critical military resources from Afghanistan to Iraq, where al Qaeda was not in force until the US invaded.
True Fact: Our military has decisively moved against the terrorist, killing and capturing hundreds of high level persons. Bush/Cheney administration and our fine military should be commended for what they have done and the HUGE successes shouldn’t be glossed over. That al Qaeda operated in Iraq is fact even established through the democrats own reports. That Hussein was a terrorist sympathizer, supporter, and funder came from his own lips. To deny the role that Iraq played, and potentially could have played, is ignorance at its best.
    * Cheney asserted there was no connection between Bush administration torture and detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib.
    - False Fact: The Senate Armed Services Committee found in December that Abu Ghraib abuses were linked to approval of Bush administration techniques.
True fact: Mixing apples and oranges here. The so-called ‘torture’ techniques were used on three individuals by non-military personnel. Abu Ghraib was a military prison run by military personnel and the personnel that abused the prisoners at Abu Ghraib wouldn’t have even had remote knowledge of these techniques being used. To insinuate otherwise is absurd. OTHER techniques, not questioned as torture, might well have lead to the abuses. Again, mixing apples and oranges.
    * Cheney said "only detainees of the highest intelligence value" were subjected to torture.
-False Fact: Cheney ignored Abu Zubaydah.
Where oh where, pray tell, is this remotely untrue?
    * Cheney said "the key to any strategy is accurate intelligence."
    - False Fact: The Bush administration used bogus intelligence as a pretense for invading Iraq -- including a forgery that purportedly linked Saddam Hussein to an attempt to purchase uranium from Niger.
True fact: We did have faulty intelligence going into the war. Clinton had changed the way we collected our intelligence and we were forced to rely on others (some of the questionable) for our intel. Britain STILLtands by the document as real. Wilson was found to have gotten his story wrong. Iraq DID purchase large amounts of yellowcake uranium (tons of which were removed to Canada). Cheney’s statement is true. The key to any strategy is accurate intelligence. The mistakes of Iraq as an example of that.
    * Cheney ignored the recently "suicided" al Qaida operative Ali Mohamed al Fakheri, who provided bogus intelligence about Iraq's links to al Qaeda.
True Fact: ? What does this mean and what does it have to do with this speech?
    * Cheney said Obama selectively released documents on Bush detainee policies.
    - Fact: A decision to withhold documents Cheney requested for declassification was made by the CIA under a standing order from President George W. Bush..
True fact: Obama released documents withheld by a standing order from President George W. Bush. So therefore your point is….?
    * Cheney claimed that only "ruthless enemies of this country" were detained by US agents and sent to secret prisons and Guantanamo.
    - Fact: "A 2008 McClatchy investigation, however, found that the vast majority of Guantanamo detainees captured in 2001 and 2002 in Afghanistan and Pakistan were innocent citizens or low-level fighters of little intelligence value who were turned over to American officials for money or because of personal or political rivalries."
True Fact: Okay, if he said ‘only’ he misspoke. I’ll give you that one. But that hundreds of prisoners were released from Guantanamo for the reasons stated is pretty common knowledge, so I doubt he was trying to pull a fast one there. What he must have been trying to say was that the ones we wish to continue to hold there are “ruthless enemies of this country”. A fact ignored by many on the left.

  26. Gene

Cheney, when giving his speech, seemed ridgid, uptight and emotionless....one could say (in Cheney/s case) that he's a stiff Dick that has no conscious....just like any other penis....

  27. When, oh when, will this crazy lying shithead bastard be sentenced to prison for whatever short lifetime he has left? I say the sooner, the better. I think he's long since taken leave of any semblance of good sense....it's way too late for him to save his own sorry stinking ass.

The bottom line: The United States tortured many INNOCENT people. The orders came from Bush, Cheney, and their Administration. We have created terrorists by detaining and torturing INNOCENT people who are later released, sometimes many years later, without charges. They are/were INNOCENT.

  29. crackbaby

The Cheney cultists, led by Dick, are giving the world a glimpse into the dark and evil world the extreme right-wingers in this country exist within.

Imagine a world without nature, where a police-state controls the populace for the benefit of a small group of elites and citizens live in fear. In these cases, only anti-social violence is viewed as a means to an end while normal social interactions are a thing of the past. This is the world of the Cheney cult. (Others who live in this world include members of the Fred Phelps freakshow, Rush Limbaugh, and everyone at Fox Nuze.

At least now we all can see just how sick these people have become.

    buh bye

    Big Al: Get a life

TheCheney is a Boardroom Lawyer guy. He knows how to use language and innuendo and the legal system to his advantage. None of what he does is nice, most of it ruins lives (I mean his govt. and private business undertakings) , he knows he is mostly going to be "above the law", and he will do or say anything to bolster his positions.

See what a heinous amount of force and hell he can bring to bear, even when he is wrong and acting illegally and against the wishes of his constituents. I think all republicans share part of this mentality....look what hell they can unleash on innocents in an UNJUST cause, going after the wrong people. Demonize whole nations, whole religions, whole segments of America even.

I am not in AWE of him, but unfortunately most republican types ARE. This gives them a stiffy to see someone exercise power in this way.

What a sad, pathetic, crazed, monomaniacal freakshow TheCheney is, and see how far he got and the punishment he gets in the end. That is what is scary....how far he went and the lack of any punishment. No wonder they breed 'em like that on the Right Wing....because they can.

It reminds me of the scene in "A Shot in the Dark" where Clouseau is going over the case with Hercule. After getting all the facts worked out Clouseau denies the obvious conclusion. That's my take: Cheney is nuts and dangerous. Has the facts but purposefully draws the wrong conclusion anyway to protect the guilty. To bad it's not all in fun and only a movie this time.

Marshal Philippe Petain was given life at 89 after casting the lot of his nation into the interests of the Thousand Year Reich. He reached 95. His fundamental AntiSemitism was subsumed into the replacement of a century old motto: Liberty, Egality and Fraternity with the more patriarchal Work, Family and Country. Untold thousand of French Jews were sent without any coaxing by their Nazi overlords to the extermination assembly lines: Vel d'Hiv, Drancy, ad nauseum. The response of the Great Liberator Charles de Gaulle is all too familiar to us by now. To ensure the tranquility and structural permanence of the newly liberated nation: Keep the Collaborators at their posts! At regular intervals during the past 50 years people were shocked at what came out of the woodwork at regular intervals. Is that what we want in the Land of the Free? At least Pierre Laval / Dick Cheney was dragged before the usual twelve Lebels. Dick has just 6 months to go before he stands naked before History's judgment. Perhaps he might have the good grace not to whine. I doubt it.
By the way, Josette, Laval's daughter still defends good ole Dad.

  50. Facts are facts. Just because facts don't support hurt feelings and wishes doesn't change them from being facts. One can rave and rant and shout all they want about what should be done to whom for why, but without facts to back it up, well, it's all just wasted hot air.

Bottom line: The Bush administration asked for legal advice on how far they could goe to obtain information from captured terrorist (the people wanting YOU and YOURS dead). That opinion was obtained. They went with that legal opinion and used the maximum against THREE people, obtaining information that kept this country safe and secure. Because of questions regarding the use of this "maximum" its use was stopped after use on those three. All long before the public became aware of its use.

The "Thought" that Iraq was harboring masses of weapons of mass destruction wasn't something that came about with the Bush Administration, but was a hugre concern of the Clinton Adm. itself. Discribed by that administration as the gravest concern we faced. No 'intellegnce' was manufactured by the Bush administration, but the info we received came from many foriegn sources, or information we had to 'purchase' due to the fact that the Clinton adm. virtually did away with our ground based intellegence service. It should be noted that while no masses WMD's were found (except for a limited few hundred warheads), the capibility to manufacture them was still available to Hussein. The labs, the scientist, and most importat - the raw ingredients were still there. AND we now know that Hussein planned to start remanufacturing those weapons at the earliest possible chance.

There were no lies. Each example is easily shot down with fact. Fact all to often obtained by sources trying to prove the accusations themselves.

    Sorry guys.

  51. GM

    Big al,
Rotten warheads that were dead and buried and unusable? And they were weapons of mass destruction? what, thermonukular ICBMS? Good luck with that. Is that the extent of your defence?
And the legal memos may well bring on sanctions including disbarment. Guess that hurts the credibility of that hopeless argument.

My advice: keep those happy thoughts.
Maybe you should give this sober analysis a read:
