The rebuilding of the World Trade Center site, already hobbled by years of delays and infighting, is facing fresh problems as private developer Larry Silverstein asks the government for crucial financial assistance, according to people familiar with the matter.
The result would be that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the government entity that owns the site, would take on more of the risk of the project at a time when the agency already faces budget restraints to pursue its core transportation and infrastructure missions.
The Port Authority, eager to prevent the project from stalling, is considering helping to finance at least one of Mr. Silverstein's planned three office towers, according to people familiar with the matter. Mr. Silverstein is requesting financing help on at least two of the three towers. The Port Authority would require concessions from Mr. Silverstein, including possibly giving up some of upside profits should the towers succeed in the long term.
This is the same guy who wanted double his insurance policy's value after the devastating 2001 attacks because each airplane impact, as he said, was actually a separate act of terrorism.
And that's the Nice on some of the bad press surrounding Silverstein ... Most know him best from his eternally curious comment to PBS shortly after the collapse of WTC 7.

He should be in jail. Ask him under oath if he knew those buildings were laden as "White Elephants" due to the asbestos covering the steel frame-which would have cost him billions to renovate. Building 7 held the Port Authority legal documents pertaining to this.

"Good cause" ought to be required for any bailout! This means a thorough explanation of why they need the money. Mr. Silverstein already received insurance money from the 9/11/2001 attack. I would like to know the basis for his request for a bailout! If the government supports Al Bore's global warming theory, then the expected rise in the sea level should be given serious consideration in the decision of whether to grant any bailout to Mr. Silverstein.

Let's get back to the main subject: Larry Silverstein is asking for money to develop a site, when his hands are not clean. He knew or should have known that the air quality after the buildings were pulled was deadly. He should be ignored when he asks for a penny.
But where did the insurance money go? Can we follow the money? It seems to me that I read that Silverstein was one of the investors who went with Madoff - I do not know if he actually lost money or was one of the early ones who benefitted from the pyramid scheme, as it ran.
But clearly, this man is big ball of trouble, and the American people as well as New Yorkers would be much better off never doing business with him.
I'd like to say "end of story" but I understand that a certain party named Elie Wiesel (also a Madoff victim) is calling for a government bailout.
I say, let him stand on his soapbox and broadcast his need to invade the pockets of the taxpayers. The louder he shouts, the more people will get the picture. Some individuals really believe that we should indemnify them against all losses, even if we did not contract to do it, even if we did not agree to insure them (and would never have done so).
I think Silverstein may have lost his insurance scam money, lost it to Madoff, and now he wants that bailout. It would be like me leaving my purse in a taxicab and claiming that the feds needed to rob everyone else's purse to come up with the alleged life savings I left in it. Why do some people think their own carelessness deserves a do-over?
I've read on the net that Silverstein was the owner of strip clubs in NY before aquiring the trade centers for a song. I don't know if that is true, but I do know that 911 was an INSIDE JOB and that Silverstein was in on it.

Larry Silverstein leased the Twin Towers in July of 2001, about six weeks before the attacks. Building Seven he owned outright. Larry had a couple of unusual clauses inserted in the insurance contract on the lease, which insured him specifically in case of terrorist attack, for several billion dollars. He went to court trying to collect TWICE on the insurance policy, on the basis that there were TWO attacks on September11th. That is, the buildings could only be destroyed once, but were attacked twice, therefore he should be paid twice.
It is remarkable that he would lease the towers at all. They had become essentially condemned structures which the Port Authority sought several times to demolish, but couold not. They were denied the necessary permit because of the large amount of asbestos on the steel frame. To continue operating, it was going to be necessary to remove that asbestos. The cost would be something on the order of magniture of a billion dollars. The buildings themselves were not turning any sort of profit, since tenancy was low.
