A lesson in making enemies

Followers of John Bolton, former US ambassador to the United Nations, take note: this is how one makes enemies and alienates entire countries.

After coming under direct fire from Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay, Fox News' Greg Gutfeld -- the notoriously insensitive late night "comedy" host who mocked a black reporter's tears on the eve of Obama's election -- was undoubtedly forced to apologize after a March 17th segment of his show "Red Eye" saw he and guests mock the Canadian military efforts in Afghanistan.

From CTV.ca:

In the four-minute segment, Gutfeld asked the other three members of his panel: "Isn't this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country? They have no army!"

Panelist Doug Benson, a comedian, replied: "I didn't even know they were in the war. I thought that's where you go when you don't want to fight. Go chill in Canada."

Benson was due to perform at an Edmonton comedy club in April, but that gig has been cancelled after threats were received about his performance.

"I think it is an uninformed view," MacKay told CTV. "It is crass. It is insensitive and it is in fact disgusting given the timing, when Canada is just receiving back four fallen heroes today."

"There should be an apology to the families in particular and to the Canadian Forces and to Canada generally, given the sacrifice and the commitment that we have demonstrated in Afghanistan," he added.

"I realize that my words may have been misunderstood," said Gutfeld on Monday afternoon. "It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize."

Canada has sacrificed 116 soldiers to the US mission in Afghanistan as of Saturday.

Here's the offending segment:

Damn, i hate this network, nothing but b.s. spills out of the mouths of almost everyone on fox!
Jesus! 116 Canadian soldiers have lost their lives in this war, and for what?! Afghanistan is in shambles, Osama is still at large and the death toll continues to rise for both the soldiers and contractors working there and for the poor people who live in the midst of all that violence!...Fixed News,Olberman got that right, I cringe everytime I see a legitimate news agency report on what these clowns are saying, and what millions of Americans believe is sound journalism. It's quite pathetic

  2. pitbullstew

typical faux news commentators...keep moving, keep moving nothing to see here folks...move along now?

  3. unnu

    Pathetic!

  4. debber

You're right... it's typical of Fox News (said with tongue firmly planted in cheek)... Gutfeld is a fucktard and should be getting his pink slip... he can join the rest of the folks in the unemployment line. What pathetic excuse for a human being.

Murdoch! Have you no shame? What does it take to require civility on the public airwaves? Canadians will remember this for a good long while. Mark my words; there will be a reckoning.

Canadians should not feel insulted when they realize Faux News just spews nonsense all day long. Like how a stopped clock is correct twice a day, occasionally a piece of truth is broadcast on Faux News.

I was in the U.S. military (Army Infantry) during the Reagan years. My unit attended joint training exercises in Canada with Canadian soldiers. During every step of the two-week session, we were outperformed by the Canadians. They were disciplined and organized. We had cases of beer waiting for us in our camp every night.

It seems odd to me that a group of pampered, highly-paid Fox pundits would criticize soldiers fighting a war they didn't start for the benefit of people who did. Monica Crowley has spent every day of her life without a moment's discomfort, yet she feels she has the right to criticize guys who are sleeping on rocks and eating meals out of vacuum-sealed bags... oh, and let's not forget about all the killing and dying they have to do so that Monica can feel safe from all those nasty brown people she keeps hearing about.

Fox News really is the evil empire that does more damage to the United States then any other group at home or abroad. It's comments and coverage like this that really leaves the rest of the world shacking their head and wondering what a screwed up country America is right now. Maybe this country will wake up one day and realize that so much is slipping away and Fox news is so partisan distorted that it really serves no one well or honest.

I get real sick of people caught out saying crass, insensitive things which ANY decent person knows are that and then in their "apology" saying they are sad they were misunderstood. No, you weren't misunderstood, asshole. Your words are offensive and they offend. You got caught with your pants down and now you're embarrassed. YOu should apologize for being a dick, not claim your comments were misinterpreted. God some of these wingnuts are sick.

Norwiegian fundamentalists? Its a joke people, maybe not all that funny, but as a canadian, it made me lol a little, more at faux news, but come on people, no need to burn the guy at the stake.

  12. Bob

What an ignoramus...Totally unfounded and ill informed to say the least. Canada has always been the voice of reason.

  13. dotmafia

This is typical arrogance and ignorance from the conservatives on faux news. It just makes them look even more stupid than we already know they are.

Okay, what about the quote did the Canadian Defense Minister 'misunderstand", Gutfeld?

    Another fine FALSENoise 'journalist'

I couldn't help noticing that none of those four dipshits was wearing
a uniform. More loud mouthed chicken hawk chicken shits. And so
    it goes.

  16. Will

I am so sick of people apologizing when they receive any sort of criticism. If you can stand by what you say, shut the hell up.

  17. Anais

On behalf of Americans of reason and humanity, I apologize to Canada for the absolutely insulting and disgusting comments of this Faux Noise "person." I don't watch Faux, which is a purely GOP-neocon-crazy propaganda machine that purports to show how superior America is to any other country on earth. I think Americans have a lot to learn from Canada, our much more civilized neighbor to the north. I wish Faux would go away and die a quiet network death, but unfortunately, someone is funding this network for hateful people.

  18. singingsportsscientist

Nice effort on the apology, but I think the Canadian people "understood" your "words" just fine.

And you are supposed to apologise for the offence (your fault), not that someone was offended (their fault?).

    Douche.

  19. henry

This greg gutfelt calls his self A comedian? and A follower of john bolton, who got his ambassadors job through the back door by GWB. in A recess appointment. should be fired for insulting our great neighbor Canada. who always sides with us in A crisis. fox again (fair and balanced). I'm sure rupert murdoch is high fiving greg gutfelt now.

  20. Dan

A full on apology to the people of Canada is the ONLY acceptable response from the very top person of this "network" . Anything less is is a slap in the face to the citizens of Canada and the fanilies of the fallen soldiers. SHAME ON YOU FOX for allowing this to air. ...Oh I forgot, YOU HAVE NO SHAME !!!!!!

  21. robthomaseyes

He can laugh all he wants, but it's the Americans that haven't been able to win a war in 6 years against a bunch of impoverished goat herders.

    Now that's funny.

  22. nellieh

How many of the 116 Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan were caused by the bombing mistake of the US?

  23. Sorry to be so crass but "Brown Eye" more aptly describes Greg Gutfeld, this program's host and what he produces. Fox is media's armpit and although stiff competition exists among its many GOP-serving propaganda and infotainment offerings, this program is Fox's sphincter. Ugly stuff, this.

Canad is our friend. I'll never forget Canada's' response to 9-11. It brought tears to my eyes. We have no business castigating Canadians. They've figured out things we aren't close to getting right.

I'm sick of hearing all these blustering Chicken Hawks chronically crow about the "Super Power" status the United States owns, as if it's a desirable quality. If any nation spent as much as we do on defense and waging war, it's likely we no longer could make this dubious claim to fame. If we spent as much on curing disease, feeding and education our and the world's poor, we'd have far fewer enemies, defense would be far less necessary and war would be considered immoral (as it is).

"What a wonderful world it would be..."

I would walk through fire with my American brothers to protect our homeland. I am sure that there are a many Americans that feel the same about us. Where are these guys at? These parasite networks like fox are just that and have to be destroyed or they will continue to leech the brains out of you forever. They are pure propaganda or whatever you want to call it, but they are not news shows.
I am afraid that the media is more powerful than nukes and is currently in the hands of madmen. Maybe you could destroy Fox through mass lawsuits on the premis they lie and fabricate and in general poison peoples brains. Just a Thought
You are the most powerful nation ever to walk the earth. Don't let the fox gaurd the chicks.
    Good luck Canada loves you.

  25. [...] It got worse.  Watch the clip and read  Raw Story’s report. [...]

  26. robert

Gutfeld and his ridiculous little show...what to say about him...hmm...juvenile, moronic, hateful, ignorant, a waste of time, uninformed, xenophobic, homophobic, angry...and all this from a Jew. Who should really know better what his sort of hatred can result in.

But then, this is Fox News.
