lindsey graham1 Sen. Graham claims use of reconciliation for health reform would be catastrophicSenator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has either a tack for exaggeration or a faltering memory, if his conclusion about the use of reconciliation during a Sunday television appearance is any indicator of such things.

His comments on CBS' Face the Nation seemed to echo other Republicans who've been attempting to frame the 51-vote parliamentary device as some kind of radical usurpation of democracy, almost akin to “ripping a piece of the fabric of America off," according to Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC).

"It would be catastrophic," Graham claimed, comparing the pending reconciliation vote on health reform to Republicans triggering the so-called "nuclear option" to ban filibusters over President Bush's judicial nominees.

Graham also claimed, "we've had reconciliation votes, but all of them have had bipartisan support. The least was 12 when we did reconciliation with tax cuts."

"Graham’s claim that 'the least' amount of Democratic votes a GOP reconciliation bill received 'was 12' is flat out false," Matt Corley noted over at Think Progress. "As The Wonk Room’s Igor Volsky has detailed, during the Bush presidency, the Republican-controlled Senate passed three reconciliation bills with three or less Democratic votes. The 2003 Bush tax cuts were supported by only two Democrats and needed Vice President Dick Cheney’s tie-breaking vote to pass."

Story continues below...

Republicans have been scolded in recent weeks by the Senate's Democratic leadership for making wild exaggerations about the use of reconciliation. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) slammed opposition lawmakers as being entitled to their opinions, but "not your own facts."

The Senate leader noted that his party has made various concessions to GOP health care demands, only to be continually rebuffed at every turn. He pointedly blamed Republicans for playing fast and loose with the truth.

"So let's look at the facts a little bit more, because they can be stubborn, you know."

Republicans have used reconciliation 17 times in the last 30 years: in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005, according to MSNBC.

This video is from CBS' Face the Nation, broadcast Sunday, March 7, 2010, as snipped by Think Progress.

Graham is a major league weasel. He's proved it time and again that he will say anything, however off the wall, to discredit Obama and the Democrats. Talk of bipartisanship sounds hollow since the Democrats have watered the health reform down to just about nothing useful for the citizenry to please republicans and they still have to hear this kind of crap.

Reconciliation is a GOP alternative, only...not to be used by the Democrat's, not ever...!! Its unconstitutional when the Democratic party uses reconcilliation...!!! Reconciliation is for the rich, only!!...used to alleviate the rich from paying taxes...it's not to be used to help the middle-class, the workers,or the the poor ...the rest of you schmucks, the ones who actually work and pay the taxes...deserve nothing....! Only the very rich and "us very important Legislators" (on the GOP side, and you should pay for that too!!) should have access to good Health Care....go join the service if you want Health Care...quit your damn whining, you peasants!
  • Schmice
Why don't reporters ever call out the politicians who are either lying or mistaken in their assertions? The networks ought to fine or fire the reporters for being unprepared. On the other hand, maybe the politicians wouldn't appear on the "news shows" (as they tout themselves). Then again, no big loss since the public wouldn't be exposed to the lies in the first place.

You can tell by the tone of the rhetoric that the Rs are getting worried about health care passing. Once the plan is passed, even those who think they are against it will realize the protections in it will work for everyone.

Not a perfect bill by a long shot, and certainly not what I wanted - but it's a beginning, and the rest will come later. If Obama can pull this off, the Rs are going to be ground down for a long time.

"It would be catastrophic," Graham claimed,"

Well, he should certainly know. Look what reconciliation did to us when it was used to pass Bush's tax cuts. We ended up with record deficits that aren't going to be paid back in our lifetimes.

Now some ungenerous people would blame the Republicans for that fact, but really it was reconciliation that was at fault. After all, have the Republicans ever been at fault when the biologically processed nourishment came in contact with the ventilatory device? Perish the thought.
  • Terrible
NO!!! What HAS BEEN catastrophic is deregulation of the financial industry, tax cuts for the wealthiest, sky-rocketing health care costs, illegal wars of aggression, and the institutionalizing of torture. Those things have brought this country to its knees. In other words the Republican Flim-Flam Party is a threat to the United States of America.
  • evopsych
Even if the Dems are able to pass this highly flawed legislation through reconciliation, it is still an insurance industry's wet dream, for all of the oft repeated reasons.

These deals were brokered in private nearly a year ago. The ongoing "debate" is just to keep the illusion of democracy alive.

Grayson was right, "Don't get sick."

    Single payer or bust.

RE: "Sen. Graham claims use of reconciliation for health reform ‘would be catastrophic’"
MY COMMENT: It sounds as though Lindsey is suffering from the 'hot flashes' yet again. Bring on the 'fainting couch'! Has "he" been getting estrogen injections like Savannah, Georgia's renowned 'Lady Chabli'? Are such injections paid for by the Senate's health care coverage? "Enquiring minds want to know."

The Republicans don't even matter anymore. Reconcile all you want. It's about time someone does.
  • Thomas Jefferson
he's really not lying, it would be tragic...for the repukes. LOL

Health care, if it ever passes, would destroy the repukes and they know it. LOL
  • Ex-Canuck
Jeebus Xhrist! This country is just so f**ked up. The repukes just can't stand that there is a black man in "their" WHITE House.
  • smallbear
The closer this bill gets to passing, the more shrill and outrageous the lies from the right become. Why? Because they know they f***ked up and that people will find out. Well, it's too late for that.

    Senator Lindsey Graham (WHITE CRACKER-SC)
  • fiftysomething
What would be catastrophic to Graham would be to lose the money he gets from pharma and health insurance companies. Even if you have health insurance now, it's no guarantee that they'll pay for your health care. The abuses of the health insurance industry alone makes the justification for health care reform. The health insurance companies should be taken out of the equation simply for the costs they add to health care. Costs which come out of our pockets when we can least afford it. They even have the nerve to raise rates when they are already making obscene profits knowing that the republicans have their back. Health insurance companies add no value to our health care, yet add greatly to the cost. We need single payer now to counteract the greed.
  • eldurado
Liar! Liar! Liar! Liar! No one believes the shit coming out of Republicans asses any more. Can't he understand that.
  • an84u
Poor little Linsey Woolsey has difficulty thinking clearly since he put his nose up ole John McStink's butt..laying often breeds lying! Why is it SC has a penchant for keeping consummate shitheads in so-called government service?
  • Phil A Sheo
It's just Lindsay Graham Cracker flapping his gums ....pay him no mind ...........
  • when_the_whip_comes_down
I would suppose that catastrophe is a mater of perspective.
Good for him = bad for me
  • Kind of like if Lindsay ever came out of the closet.
  • I would say the fact is that unless you are as rich as Rush Limbaugh you do not have health security. Health insurance is generally tied to your job. Lose your job, and eventually you will lose your insurance. That's health insecurity. Keep your job, and because of medical underwriting insurance company death panels and bureaucrats, you can still lose your insurance if you become ill and hit a lifetime benefit cap or if you have a gap in coverage or illness the insurer decides is a "pre-existing condition."
  • John Swofford
What McCain's poodle blathers about is of little interest; he' just a pooch doing his assigned tricks.
  • Lindsay Graham is long-practiced, unapologetic liar, hypocrite, and partisan hatchet-man. He was one of the leaders of the Clinton impeachment-over-nothing fiasco, blubbering "rule of law, rule of law" incessantly -- like a pull-string doll -- yet had literally nothing to say about the Cheney-Bush war crimes (over 100 known and documented murder-by-torture homicides, going by the Army autopsy reports released so far)... and Graham still doesn't have anything substantive or meaningful to say, because all crimes are OK if the perpetrator is a Republican.

Rule-of-Law, Senator Cracker? Oops, I meant to say "Graham."

And knuckle-walkers like this is what the powers-that-be promote to the position of Judge in the military. Unreal.

whay hasnt someone outed Lindsay graham as the flamer he is
  • Ez4moi
The Democratic Party had better pass this take over of health care now. The old people know that they'll suffer a big reduction in service. Independent voters know they have been had. Young people are falling way from this fast. The old and young generations will not elect socialists again anytime soon.

There are two kinds of liberals: Control freaks and those wanting to be led.
  • WJM51
DEMS are control freaks? You just made me laugh. It's amazing, after 30 years of REPUBLICAN rule, we have more people in jail than any other country in the world. The REPUBLICANS gave us the largest increase of gov't in our history with the Dept of "Homeland security". It was under the republicans that the "patriot act" got shoved down our throats. It was the republicans who gave us sanctioned TORTURE and LIED us into two illegal wars. Sounds like a bunch of control freaks to me.

Then, let's talk about the righties in the teabagger "movement" who go around spouting bullshit that will hurt THEM more than their "leaders" can dream of. They go around demanding that they keep getting screwed by insurance companies rather than FIXING anything. They have proved time and time again that they don't stand FOR anything, but against everything possible. And let's not forget the brilliance of the "Keep your gov't hand off my medicare" statements that they keep spouting like they make sense. They keep yelling "We're getting screwed", and then they go and ask those who are DOING the screwing what they should do next. Sounds an awful lot like people wanting to be led to me.

You live by projection, not by reality. You are bitching about others like they are YOURSELF. It's YOUR party that is EXACTLY what you are complaining about. You have two types of people, those who want to rule everything, and those who want to be ruled.

You REALLY need to learn something. WE in this country pay TWICE what the "socialistic" countries, like Canada, pay for health care. And our outcomes are in the lower 30s, whereas Canada's are in the top ten. You are paying to make some people, who provide NOTHING to your health care, very very rich. And you are getting screwed every time you pay a premium, and yet you stand there and demand that it continue!

I will NEVER Understand people like you. Things CAN'T get much worse here than they are, but yet you DEMAND that the rich continually get richer and the rest of us die early for their profits. 40,000 Americans die EVERY YEAR for your stupidity. You OWE them something, regardless of what your republican "ideals" of each man IS an island unto himself say. We can either help each other, or we can drive ourselves to the early grave so many of us will be heading towards. We can either hand separately or we can hang together. We can stand up for each other's rights, freedoms and futures or we can just let the rich keep screwing us for profit.

We know what YOU stand for. And it's a real shame that you don't have enough concern for anyone else but yourself. And your selfish attitudes are what keep this country going right down the toilet. Thanks for that. A LOT.
  • Ez4moi
I'm not looking at my comment right now.  However, I feel certain that I said there are two types of liberals not Democrats.  One type is a control freak.  The other is someone wanting to be controlled, taken care of so to speak.  Liberal as a word has been so associated with bad outcomes that it is just short of a political curse word.  Therefore, they have taken to calling themselves progressives again.

The Democratic Party has scared the old people at every election cycle by telling them that the Republicans want to take away their Social Security checks.  The irony is rich that these very same fear mongers want to cut $ 500 billion out of Medicare for oldsters in order to allegedly cost justify their Health Care reform.  This "reform" is going to bankrupt the country.  We can't afford it.

Well, going down your list further, maybe the Patriot Act which Democrats campaigned against is necessary.  Congress just reauthorized it.  Congress is full of Democrats.  Homeland Security Department would be difficult to sell against in Manhattan I think.

I am not projecting any of my personally positively held views onto Democrats or Liberals.  I am not a control freak.  It is obvious who is taking over car companies and banks.

Anyone with means travels to the USA for health treatment.  Recently, the top official in Newfoundland went to Miami for surgery.  When asked why he didn't use the free socialized medicine in his part of the world, he said it is a private decision and no one's business.

The Tea Partiers, I've heard have a large percentage of 43% of the electorate who call themselves Democrats.  Essentially, there are 23% hardcore Democrats.  I've thought about this some as it is not a priority of mine.  I estimate that 10% are communists and 13% socialists.  Of the remaining 43%, these 20% seem to be gravitating toward the Tea Party.

Perhaps our prisons are full of those people who have received the tender care of liberalism.  For one example, liberal ideas have obliterated black families.  Since 1965 Democrats have been in charge of Detroit.  A once vibrant city has been run into the ground.

I'll stand by the principles which made this country uniquely great.  George Washington would be ashamed of you and that which you advocate.

    See you at Raw Story,

    Ez4moi

The Dems need to just do it. This is all more Republican fear-pageantry that they have been rewarded for time after time after time after time.

The Dems need to just do it and then point out that it wasn't the end of the world, or the country, and that the Republicans were just being drama queens.

But the Dems will probably cave to Republican hyperbole like they have for years.
  • Rider
The health care reform bill has already passed the Senate with a super-majority vote. i.e. by sixty votes. What's going through reconciliation for an up or down vote is the follow-on bill with the amendments. Let's not get hysterical, Sen. Graham.
  • markusgarvey
YES!...it will be catastrophic...for the neocons...
  • allfactssupportmypositions
Imagine, both parties working together to provide the best health care for the most Americans for the best price. I know, I know. I like to dream. Republicons think that impressing their wet brain "supporters" by "stopping" health care reform, and lying about said reform at every opportunity is good politics.

Republicons are playing politics with people's lives, and these people are dying.

Voting Republicon is an act of murder. Period.

120 per day die while you, and your friends are obstructing.

I can't wait till the day when you meet your master Lindsey. Satan.
  • allfactssupportmypositions
Lindsey, what has already been catastrophic was letting Republicons run our country into the ground since the "Reagan Revolution" began. The actions of the G.O.P. in the last 30 years has weakened America to the point where we may actually fail, or go bankrupt. All because you Republicons wanted to crush the poor, and the middle class for the benefit of only the rich. Making sure the "haves, and the have mores" pay far less than their fair share of taxes.

I just turned on CNN and watched Tom DeLay talking about Democrats. (sic) Tom DeLay should have been incarcerated instead. One corrupt SOB.

Imagine what it would be like if your "friends" didn't control the msm, and white wash the destruction of our families YOUR PARTY has unleashed.

Lindsey, go back to South Carolina where ignorance and hypocrisy runs the state, and do your preachin' there. Check out the Appalacian Trail while yer at it.

And to think Lindsey is gettin' his ass kicked by the tea baggers. America is failing.....

    http://www.RepublicansAreADisease.com

    Republicons = Celebrate Ignorance
  • Let me remind you, Tom DeLay has never been convicted of any of the ethics charges that were thrown at him, all during election years. The bi partisan ethics committee found him guilty of nothing. As far as his criminal charges, one of the three charges were thrown out by a Democrat judge saying there was no law on the books to charge him with anything. The two remaining charges are the same -- there was no law on the books to charge him for what he was indicted. It has been held up in appellate courts because the politically motivated charges brought upon him by a rogue and reckless prosecutor, Ronnie Earle, charged DeLay purely to get him to step aside from his Leadership post - again - in an election year and he knows he had no evidence. They knew they had no evidence whatsoever to actually convict him of anything. After the indictments Earle was quoted as saing, "The law does not define justice, the law does not define justice anywhere, therefore I have to make up my own definition." The press has so mishandled the truth of what has happened to Tom DeLay is shameful. The only reason charges were made against him because he was such an effective legislator and Leader of his party. And now people like you spew off uninformed bulls**t as if you actually know anything about the truth.
  • Maddog
I wish the Democrats would point out the obvious - They are not abusing reconciliation, the Republicans are abusing the filibuster. If they would let the Senate do some work, they could get something done without reconciliation.
  • JSquercia
I agree with you that it would be nice to call a spade a spade and a LIAR a LIAR .That being said it would be even MORE helpful if the moderators were to CORRECT the lie by showing the facts .
I watched a brief portion of the McLaughlin show ) and it was amazing they basically had one Liberal woman whose name I don't know versus Mort Zuckerman , Pat Buchanan and Monica Crowley . The latter group was still claiming that Reaganomics worked .I HAD to turn it off I was so disgusted . The same BS of he was for smaller Government , and Fiscal responsibility . He freakin TRIPLED the National Debt for GODs sake .
  • carol h.
These people are amazing. In the last few years, reconciliation has been used around 26 times. And 18 of those have been by Republicans. When they use it, it is a necessity. When the Dems use it, it is unheard of, undemocratic, catastrophic to the Senate etc etc.

It is the overwhelming hypocrisy of the GOP, that continues to amaze. It is the lies that flow unabated from their mouths. I am so totally fed up with the whole government. Please all of you out there. Vote both parties out and vote anyone with a pulse in from a third party.
  • stormkite
Graham doesn't have a memory problem, aside from the sideeffects that go with "not very bright."

He's just a liar. And a Republican. But I repeat myself.
  • sanchosdad
Many people wonder why senator graham is so short tempered these days. maybe i can shed some light on it.

Senator Graham has had his fringed leather chaps in an absolute wad ever since he got "mr congeniality" at the Leather Ball and Parade in the Castro in San Fransisco. he thought he was a lock to once again win "best buns" after all his hours toiling on the stairmaster. he locked himself in his basement with the stairmaster and elliptical machine every weekend starting in January. he had little more than a case of vitamin water and a Dominican towel boy named Javier to sustain him (poor Javier).

and then he is still unhappy about losing his own pet earmark in the senate defense appropriations bill. he was penciled in for free Jello shots and amiyl nitrate poppers in his hospitality tent at the Manhole Club on Fire Island during Fleet Week (he WAS in the Navy after all) but when the CBO determined that the cost could run into the millions, he withdrew it under pressure from his party. and he has been bitchy and whiny ever since.
  • robertfromphila
These people lie through their teeth. If the senate bill passes the house, regardless what happens later, then the bill passed with a super majority by bypassing obstructionist GOP filibusters.
  • Ralph
I'm sorry, but I have to say this guy looks like a pussy! I'm not kidding you, if he had gone to my high school the girls would have kicked his ass, just to do it.
