Turns out this story is incorrect, the law they're talking about was passed in 1951, not last year, and a lot of states had laws like this during that time period. There is a bill being run through right now to repeal it, though it looks like they tried to repeal it in 1993 but that bill didn't get anywhere.

Oh, and in 1957 the SCOTUS ruled against laws like this in Yates v. United States, 354 U.S. 298, so this law is unenforcable anyway.

This is not a dumb idea at all. Remember most mobsters jailed by the government were convicted on charges of not reporting or paying taxes on their criminal "profits".
