senatorensign CNNs Sanchez launches surprise attack on senator in sex and favors scandalWhen Sen. John Ensign, Republican of Nevada, went on CNN Thursday to talk to host Rick Sanchez, the scandal-plagued politician thought he was going to have airtime to launch attacks against the Obama administration over the Flight 253 security breach. Instead, the Nevada politician found himself facing tough questions about allegations he helped secure a job for an aide with whose wife he was sleeping.

In June, Ensign admitted having an affair with the wife of Doug Hampton, an aide in his Capitol Hill office. Until that point, Ensign had been considered a contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. Allegations then emerged that Ensign may have violated ethics rules by paying $96,000 to Hampton and helping to arrange a job for his aide that involved lobbying efforts.

As CNN's Sanchez pointed out to Sen. Ensign on Thursday, the law prohibits congressional aides from working as lobbyists for a year after leaving the Hill. But allegations that Ensign set up lobbyist meetings for Hampton would indicate the senator and his aide may have disregarded that rule.

"Did you help [Doug Hampton] get a job because you felt bad for him, or because you had been sleeping with his wife and you wanted to get him out of the way?" Sanchez asked Ensign point blank.

"I've commented all I was going to comment on that," Ensign responded. "We told you when we were going to come on here that I'm going to be focused on health care, I'm gonna be focused on the economy..."

Story continues below...

But Sanchez persisted in his line of questioning -- for a full seven minutes.

"This certainly isn't the first time that CNN's Rick Sanchez has distinguished himself as a real journalist, but it may his best moment yet," applauded blogger MeMeMeMeMe at DailyKos.

"There must be some confusion here. CNN is asking actual and persistently dogged and tough questions of a high-ranking public official, a member of Congress no less, live on TV and everything, like actual journalists or something," quips Brad Friedman at BradBlog.

The following video was broadcast on CNN, December 31, 2009, and uploaded to the Web by TalkingPointsMemo.

Economic suicides that involve entire families.Trillions in debt. 200 billion in bonuses to useless corporate execs Now just what is it that Ensign and his fellow scumbags are protecting us from?

    "...may have disregarded that rule."

Don't you mean "broken that law"?

If we are to have a just and humane society, we are going to have to speak truth, regardless of where that truth settles. We must hold those in leadership positions accountable for not only their actions, but their intent as well. True Journalists accept this role and put truth telling forward as their main thrust. There are precious few real Journalists in mainstream media, but it looks like Mr. Sanchez has joined that group. Hopefully he can weather the backlash.
  • ottovb
This is what journalists are supposed to do. At least it is what they used to do until the few remaining multinational media conglomerates monopolized the airways, movies and print and jumped into bed with government while at the same time lobbying them to Hell and charging inflated rates for political advertising during campaigns thus insuring that the representatives we elect have to suck corporate dick for enough money to get elected and thereby lose any loyalty they ever had for their constituency. This point has come up before when some in Congress discussed limiting how much political ads cost as a means to wrestle politicians away from their corporate puppet-masters. Media companies cried that limiting how much they can charge for political ads amounted to infringement of their (corporate) right to free speech. I kid you not.

I may be wrong but didn;t Barney Frank get in the same trouble for hiring his Boyfriend to a job he had no idea how to run or manage?

I wonder how the thugs will take revenge on Sanchez for going all Dan Rather. Will we see him apologize to the crook Ensign? Will CNN fire him? Will he mysteriously stop asking pertinent questions?

It's so much easier to go with the flow, like Wolf "Bearded Lady" Blitzer and Larry "The Old One" King. Can CNN withstand the the terrible strain of becoming relevant?
  • ladyfrancesca
Wow. Outstanding job, Rick Sanchez. Way to go.
  • christopherlaw
    I guess 'Don't ask, don't tell' doesn't apply here! Oops, that's another matter :-)
    Thank you Rick!
Let's look at the "Family" & C Street again. Please Shine LIGHT on that scary bunch!!!
Ensign is a Proud Member! Nothing is scarier than the Christian Taliban, I mean Fundamentalist!
It's now rooted at the AF Academy and in the Pentagon!

Don't get too excited about Sanchez's heroism. The story was about sex. Don't expect CNN to show any heroics when it comes to real, political news.

Don't get too excited about Sanchez. This was about sex. When it has to do with real important political issues, don't expect any heroism out of CNN.

He's done nothing unethical...except for screwing another man's wife....

They screw the voters all the time.

If this report is accurate, I guess Sanchez will never again be welcome in Cuban Miami.

it should be OBVIOUS to anyone willing to pay attention that this "Representitive" is LYING his ass off.. why? He spends MORE time explaining why he WONT answer the question than just answering it. A LOT more..

See, he keeps telling us, between the lines, how this works. Some PR guy makes up an "official statement", then the "investigations" are behind closed doors with his buddies, then he's "cleared of all charges"... and not ONCE will he ever "publicly" answer the questions. The PUBLIC will never hear the facts, just the final "verdict" by his buddies in Congress.

The corruption is so complete that these lying, cheating, married woman affair having pieces of shit sit on television and tell you to your face to simply fuck off, they will admit nothing. And we keep these people in office.
  • Ensign leaves a trail of slim were ever he goes. Why is this piece of sheet still in the Senate and not in a jail cell? What would our founding fathers think about the scumbags we have representing us now?
  • disappointedvoter
It depends on whom you ask. Ask Fox, and they'll tell you that repubs are chosen by Jesus and George Washington.
  • bandanajack
    go ricky !!

Sen. Ensign makes a good poster-boy for the most significant political challenge facing America today; prohibiting private money in elections.
  • This scuambag does not have any moral ground to talk about any public policy.
  • leskern
They see what Maddow does daily and listened to her comments the other night on journalistic integrity and they were SHAMED. Well, at least Sanchez was.

Now if only one of the "journalists" in the MSM would try to pin down Dick Cheney, interrupting his attacks on the Obama administration, over Cheney's role in the treasonous outing of covert CIA counter-terrorism agent Valerie Plame Wilson...grilling Cheney relentlessly until he either walks off the set, has a heart attack or finally confesses the truth, getting down on his knees, sobbing and begging for forgiveness.
  • panamarick
Hey? Remember that "personal responsibility" thing they kept shoving down our throats year after year? Now... it seems ...that doesn't apply to anyone but a regular American citizen?

Do you ever want to to run with torches and battle axes to their doors?
Don't you hate them for their lies and greed?
Don't you wish our police forces would do their jobs and arrest these common, every day crooks?
Don't you wish we lived in the country of our fathers called America?
    ...I do.

Good for Sanchez, but as they ended, he was a little too nice to a man who had just told him to go fuck himself in that slick Republican way they do. (not that there is any shortage of Democrats who do it, too) I would have told him to get off my goddamn program, you lying, obfuscating son of a bitch, you. These people can be caught standing over a dead body, holding a bloody knife and then calmly and adamantly claim they had nothing to do with it and once all the facts are in, they will be completely exonerated. I guess you gotta hand it to them in some sick way.
  • bruman
Ensign is a lying sack and if he were a Dem, the Repubs would be screaming bloody murder. These pseudo-Christian, semi-human mutants that we call Conservatives, are pond- scum-sucking miscreants who wear that handsome face, with proper smile in place. But, they are hucksters as good as any circus midway carnival barker. Ensign is double-trouble. He is as evil as they come and has power to make people's lives miserable. He doesn't want you or me to have health care, while getting it himself with our tax money. Ensign, another self-serving, Narcissistic Personality Disorder sociopath, who is taking our taxpayer dollars and screwing not only the public, but another man's wife, as well. Why should the people of Nevada support this sicko, mess of a semi-human?

Rick Sanchez DUI:Hit And Run Death – Rick Sanchez DUI is back in the news. The CNN anchor hit and killed Jeffrey Smuzinick, with his car on a residential street near Dolphin Stadium on December 10, 1990.Sanchez and his father who fled the scene was leaving an NFL football game and according to a Metro-Dade police officer said he “smelled strongly of alcohol”.Eyewitnesses claimed that Sanchez never tried to help his victim but was instead screaming at police officers saying that blood tests were pointless, and would hurt his public image

I think that Senator Ensign should have counter-interviewed Sanchez

    Liberal hypocracy...It's a wonderful thing!
  • Savantster
It's cute how you figure allegations that never had charges filed against a non-elected person is the same as current allegations against a sitting Congressmen.. and how we should just drop the whole thing dealing with the elected official because you don't like someone that asked him questions.

If Sanchez broke the law, he should have been prosecuted. Period. If someone died, I'm guessing the Statute of Limitations hasn't expired yet, so you should file legal documents in complaint and have the criminal charged with crimes based on real evidence.

The SAME thing applies to the sitting Congressmen. Only the Congressmen is refusing to answer questions, and actually spending a LOT more time explaining that he doesn't want to answer than it would take to answer.

The sad thing about you (well, one major thing anyway, among many) is you pretend "Liberal" as an ideology is hypocritical, but hypocrisy is an individual thing, not something you can assign to an entire ideology (unless that ideology is intentionally designed with hypocrisy in it, like so many of the policies of the right-wing). I'm _very_ Liberal, and I try very hard every day to make sure there is no hypocrisy in anything I do. See, I agree with you that if Sanchez broke the law, if he killed someone, he should be in prison right now. But that has nothing to do with the current sitting elected official refusing to answer questions about criminal activity, does it?

Let's see if you are rooted in hypocrisy as well as an ideology that seems to condone it.
  • RomanceWritR
Savanster....Rick Sanchez PLED GUILTY to the charge. What is wrong with you? What "Criminal Activity" as opposed to immoral activity, is Ensign guilty of?
  • fiftysomething
Thing is Rick is not an elected official. There you go comparing apples to oranges. Typ repub ploy
