dobbs Stewart to Dobbs: Your views are abhorrent, wrong, but consistent

Jon Stewart greeted former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs, an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration, with a Mexican Mariachi band Wednesday on The Daily Show, before talking to him for 24 minutes about his views, CNN, and politics.

"Lou Dobbs! What the hell happened?" opened Stewart, wasting no time asking Dobbs about his abrupt departure from CNN.

"What happened is CNN and I decided that we would be going different directions," replied Dobbs. "John Klein, the president of CNN told me point blank that the network was going to move away from advocacy journalism, that I practice, and move toward something he called 'middle of the road' journalism."

Dobbs' views have earned him harsh criticism in recent years, especially from Hispanic groups, as a result of his increasingly fervent admonishment of undocumented immigrants. He's also been scolded this year for repeatedly suggesting Obama should prove he really was born in the United States, despite the fact that his U.S. birth certificate has been verified by numerous sources.

"As you know, I'm not exactly neutral on a lot of issues, and that wasn't working for me," Dobbs admitted.

Stewart sympathized with the growing need for media figures to have a viewpoint: "In this environment, you have to take a position -- maybe it's not liberal, maybe it's not conservative -- but it has to be for authenticity" in order to avoid "gray, flavorless journalism," said the comedian. But he didn't hesitate to slam Dobbs for his views, albeit in a lighthearted tone.

"I do respect you because your views, however abhorrent and wrong, have always been consistent," he told the former CNN anchor. Dobbs smiled and laughed, joking: "I deeply appreciate that, Jon."

The two went on to discuss the increasing political divisiveness and partisanship in the United States during the Bush years, which has continued -- if not risen -- under Obama. Dobbs insisted that the conservative antagonism toward Obama has been genuine populism, while Stewart argued it's mostly because he's a Democrat.

"There's a fear out there that seems irrational," said Stewart.

"Part of that fear certainly is," Dobbs conceded, adding that "part of the fear is simply catching up with the events of some years ago -- say, four or five years ago."

"Why do they always catch up to the fears during Democratic administrations?" asked Stewart. "It feels like all the people that want limited government really just want government limited to Republicans," he said, to applause from his audience.

The two continued to talk politics and the fallout of the Bush years. Watch the whole interview below, in three parts.

This video is from Comedy Central's The Daily Show, broadcast Nov. 18, 2009.

Not only are Dobbs and his kind (the worst being Glenn Beck)constantly yelling "FIRE!" in the theater of America, They're yelling, "FIRE!" "ARSON" and pointing to President Obama and screaming even louder, "THERE'S THE ARSONIST! GET HIM!!!" And, while this is an attempt by me to draw a 'picture' with language the results the neo con, republican, right wing, independent's hope to achieve is the genuine destruction of the Democratic party & our president's policies even if it takes actually destroying (as in KILLING) our president.

CNN wimped out by firing Dobbs. Maybe someone in Oshama's administration didn't like to the hear TRUTH about illegal immigration and aliens from Dobbs. CNN is just another presidential butt kissing network like MSNBC and others. No wonder their ratings stink. Dobbs was the only reason to watch that channel.

Sadly though, the "news" channel with the best ratings is the one that deceives, distorts, spins and outright lies more than any other.

Truthfully, I'd rather dull, factual news rather than sensationalist bullshit propaganda. Each to their own I guess?!

the "truth" about illegal immigration is that our subsidies in ag and our trade agreements trashed their economy.. and the other "truth" is that right-wing company owners give them jobs otherwise they wouldn't have a reason to be here.
  • That ship has sailed and clearly you are in a (quite natural) part of the grieving process, but soon it will pass over. No need to worry though, there will always be a place people can find a healthy whiff of ignorance from which to breath deeply and refortify any gaseous depletion occurring within from lack of televised hate.

He's a turd. Just like every news-commentator (fake journalist) out there. Although, I do think we need to guard our borders a hell of a lot better.

The main point of disagreement seemed to me to be
whether we are a "fragile" nation or a "strong" nation.
Does a 12 trillion dollar debt make us strong?
Does 10.2 percent national unemployment make us strong?
Does fighting two aggressive wars in foreign countries make us strong?
    etc...

You know, I've never watched Dobbs for more than 30 seconds at a time, and I'm GLAD. What a douche. To suggest the Centrist Dems (we have virtually NO "left" dems) are trying to swing this country to a "left-wing extreme" is perhaps the most disingenuous, most deceitful, most intellectually dishonest thing I think I've heard someone who's supposed to be "respected", say.

Leftist.. take control of EVERY means of production, all energy production.. that's leftist. A Public Option and stringent consumer protections on an industry KNOWN for abusing the public is not "leftist", it's rational.

Dobbs is an idiot. "Fragile country", fucking bullshit. Pussy country, maybe.. not fragile. People are told they can have anything they want and have become spoiled little children, and that benefits the RULING ELITE while destroying the planet. So, our "leaders" need to be the adults in the room and make some hard decisions and fix some problems. Instead, we get the right-wing dip shits standing on the floor of Congress holding babies saying "this baby thinks we should blah blah".. All fucking hat, no cattle.

Watching these morons parade around like intellectuals makes me sick. You don't say you support individual liberty, then deny women the right to govern their own reproductive processes.. you don't suggest you support equal rights for all Americans, then tell gays they can't get married.. disgusting.

I read that Obama's poll numbers had gone below 50 percent for the first time. My guess is the announcement from Homeland Security on a plan to legalize the illegal immigrants coupled with Obama's overseas announcement for more free trade added to his decline in popularity.

The real unemployment rate is 17.5 percent. A few announcements along the lines of eliminating H1xxx Visas and Green Card Visas and tossing a lot employers of illegals in prison would have boosted his numbers. The fact that he has not made those announcements coupled with his Wall Street policies leads me to believe that he has decided to go 'whole hog" with the bankers, sweat shop employers and free traders to fund his next election war chest. I campaigned for him and gave him a fair amount of money but just like Clinton, once was enough.
