loudobbs20090923 Lou Dobbs announces abrupt departure from CNNUPDATE: CNN has announced that veteran John King will replace Lou Dobbs in the 7 pm slot in early 2010.

The network signaled that it intends to stick to its guns in attempting to have a non-partisan nightly lineup, as opposed to the opinionated lineup at Fox News Channel and MSNBC.

"The program will reflect what CNN is all about: straight facts from our anchors and the widest range of opinions from across the political spectrum," CNN president Jon Klein said in a statement.

"John has enthralled CNN viewers with his vast political knowledge, and he has spent the past year reporting from beyond the Beltway on pressing policy issues and the real people they impact," he continued. "Every night, he’ll share his passion and his insights about what is really going on in Washington and across America."

The evolution of CNN anchor Lou Dobbs from financial news wizard to populist defender of American jobs to right-wing promoter of "birther" conspiracies appeared to have come to an abrupt end with his announcement Wednesday evening that he's leaving the network to "pursue new opportunities."

Story continues below...

"This will be my last broadcast here on CNN, where I've worked for most of the past 30 years," Dobbs told an unsuspecting audience on Lou Dobbs Tonight.

Dobbs said, "Over the past six months, it's become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us. And some leaders in media politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here on CNN and to engage in constructive problem solving."

Dobbs said he "talked extensively" with CNN President Jonathan Klein and "we have agreed to a release from my contract that will enable me to pursue new opportunities."

Dobbs' sudden departure is certain to fire up speculation over whether the veteran news anchor was pushed out or decided himself to leave the network, and whether anger from some political activists over Dobbs' increasingly conservative coverage of news issues played any role in the decision.

Viewers of CNN may remember Dobbs as the host of Moneyline, a business-focused show that aired during the heady days of the 1990s tech boom. In the past decade, Dobbs' show morphed into Lou Dobbs Tonight, a more populist brand of TV news that championed two principal issues: The outsourcing of American jobs overseas, and the phenomenon of illegal immigration.

Dobbs' focus on illegal immigrants inflamed a great deal of controversy, particularly among Latino advocacy groups. Last month, numerous immigration activist groups joined together to create BastaDobbs.com, a Web site that pressured CNN over its "hypocrisy" in seeking Latino viewers while giving Dobbs a nightly platform for criticism of immigration policies that some observers said spilled over into xenophobia.

But, in the months since Barack Obama took the oath of office, media observers have accused Dobbs of evolving from populist reporter into dogmatic conservative pundit. Last summer, media watchdogs and progressive groups raised the alarm over Dobbs when he became one of very few non-Fox News reporters to give large amounts of airtime to the "birther" conspiracy that states Obama is not the legitimate president of the United States because he wasn't really born in the US.

That editorial approach may have backfired, as Dobbs' ratings reportedly dropped following criticism that his show had abandoned responsible journalistic practices. And, in a subtle sign that Dobbs' birther coverage may have upset his bosses, news reports came in that CNN President Jonathan Klein had declared in an email that "the birther story is dead."

But speculation over Dobbs' departure may also focus on the news anchor's personal safety. Dobbs' home was recently hit by a bullet, something that Dobbs reportedly blames on his political views.

The following video, of Dobbs' resignation announcement, was broadcast on CNN November 11, 2009, and uploaded to YouTube by MediaMatters.

Don't let the door hit you in the @ss old man. The world is changing, change with it or get off the airwaves...

I thought he was great, standing up for the middle class and working class americans. Its a shame he got bullied off cnn, illegal immigrants groups are so demanding.
  • DownriverDem
I thought he sucked insulting all the rest of Americans. Take a walk and look around. America is diverse whether you like it or not.

    Bye Bye Dobbs.

Good post but I doubt the illegal immigrant groups brought him down. It was the big money of the employers of illegals, H1 Visa and Green Card holders that got him. My guess is that most of the comments against him come from those scum employers and their lobbyist. If they can't send your job overseas, then they want to bring in cheap labor to take it. The first people to get it in the neck are Mexican-Americans and other minorities and then they have the audacity to claim they are protecting minority rights.

It's a shame the word "conservative" has been hijacked to mean something completely contrary to it's true definition. Just like the word "liberal" was framed to be be analogous with definitions foriegn to it's real concept. They both have a place and a time.

I've always considered myself to be fiscally conservative, and socially liberal. Without feeling "bi-polar."

Scratch me, and you'll find the son of a father who's family has been in the US at least 150 years before it became a nation, and the grandson of a 1920's immigrant from Armenia.

But I understand what you are saying: these cretins hide behind their lapel flag and "conservative" label, distorting reality for the masses. He'll probably end up being paid millions at some "conservative" (spelt F-a-s-c-i-s-t) think tank. And being called upon by Sean Hannity as some kind of expert guest speaker.

    .
You can thank the religious right and Reagen for the co-opting of "conservative". Once the zealots entered the picture, the label became an ideology.

The other part of the problem is you're talking about 4 words.. conservative and Conservative and liberal and Liberal. The word Conservative is wrought with ill associations, conservative quite simply means "careful" where liberal means "a lot" and has nothing to do with Liberal. Being "fiscally conservative" is not the same as being fiscally Conservative.. Being fiscally Conservative means pro-corporation at the expense of workers, pro-war spending but not spending money on feeding the poor _at all_, etc. etc.. Being fiscally conservative means not wasting money, such as finding and eliminating waste and fraud.. which doesn't mean you say "let the poor starve to death, I don't care".

It's a mess, to be sure.. but a fabricated mess to keep everyone distracted while they are abused and looted by the ruling elite. The solution is to abandon the "2 party system" that has co-opted the words and start voting for individuals on their merits, not their party.

The only pertinent question in my mind is, do you condone one person, for their own personal gain, abusing others. The "left" says "no", the "right-wing" says "of course" or "I have that right". I'm guessing you're "left" on that issue.

All his lies fear & smear will not be missed. My favorite was his rants about 'illegal aliens' as he employed them & paid them under the table at his home. A typical Conservative.

He can now go to arizona and help the kkk "build" fences to keep him in. Please build it from the other side.

It's amazing how utterly stupid people have become when they can't tell the difference between talking about a problem and associating that problem with "racism". Here's a hint : Lou Dobbs' wife is a latina. Idiots.
  • jdouglas
I don't care if Lou Dobbs' wife is a green extraterrestrial blob who sleeps every night in a wide-mouth quart mason jar. The man knows exactly what he's doing, and what he's doing is appealing to the hidden, inner racist character of many Americans. In my book that makes him a racist.
  • Turnip
Aside from buying into more than a couple distractions, he was more right than wrong about what is happening. I disagree with almost all of his 'solutions', but at least he gave important issues the airtime that they deserved. It's a shame that there aren't more like him, and that we've come to accept so little from the media in general.

    Are you a tea-bagger?
  • thefreedomship
Are you the kind of person who likes to label people and put them into distinct categories? Truther, tea-bagger, birther... My guess is Turnip is a human being making a comment, but hey I'm probably wrong. What are you Jay? Let's simplify your existence on this planet to a single word... Douchebag seems fitting.
  • jamzz
Hmmm...anyone who would have such a douchbagy user name such as "thefreedomship" has cornered the market on being a douchebag already, sorry...
  • jamzz
Yes, I'm talkin' about you there dumb, dumb ship guy....
  • Savantster
    .
All people are the kind of people that put lables on things. It's how our brains work, it's part of our biology and it's part of how we have excelled in the animal kingdom to be the top species. Labeling allows for communication, without it we can't communicate.

You seem to want to dilute the label, and I'm not sure why. I doubt you'd say a child rapists is "just a human being trying to satisfy some craving.. leave them alone".

While I agree that Turnip's post is a bit ambiguous for deciding where his political leanings are generally, saying Lou was some how unique or rare in giving air time to things needing to be addressed seems over the top.. and saying you disagree with most of his solutions is ambiguous as well.

The problem is that our society has been so radically divided that most people clearly do fall on one side of the fence or the other. The deceit used to pretend you're not actually a total piece of shit if you're a modern day right-winger is pretty thick in some cases. If you don't know where someone stands, you don't know if they are lying to you or just being honest (and ambiguous).. if they are a right-winger and being ambiguous, they are typically lying..

corruption is destroying the ability to have any kind of rational or civil discourse in this country and this little thread kind of proves it. It was a simple question, and instead of a simple answer, you decided to "put someone into distinct categories".. and my guess is, in your mind, Jay is some kind of "dirty liberal scum socialist commie dick" .. amiright? Snap judgments are natural, how you act on them is all that matters. Jay asked a question, you insulted him for that because you didn't like the implication of the question, but never bothered to wait for an answer or to find out why the question mattered.. so you're guilty of what you deride others of. Good job. Douchebag seems fitting.

Thank goodness. Although I haven't watched Dobbs, he had gone over the cliff with some of his comments.
  • metakid
I think so too. I wonder why CNN did not step in earlier? I loved how Colbert and Stewart parodied his departure. Hilarious! This video has both the clips: http://tiny.cc/6R172
  • Elim
Will Olbermann celebrate? Probably. Dobbs must have been threatened, and if he indeed was, that is not something Keith wants to crow about.

I never watched Dobbs, but I appreciated his being the only person on television who spoke up about illegal immigration. I live in a border state, and illegals with their fucking gangs, drugs and diseases piss me off!
  • Savantster
    .
so you're cool with citizens and their gangs, drugs, and disease?

and speaking of disease, it's been shown that illegals tend to have decent health when they get here, then it deteriorates to the American Standard over time. go figure.

And the part of your post that most will overlook is the real "problem", and that is the word "border". Any time you make a line and say "people over here get everything they want and people over there.. fuck you", you'll have problems. Duh?
