Report damns Irish Catholic Church for covering up evil sex abuseDUBLIN — The Catholic Church in Ireland covered up widespread allegations of "evil" child sex abuse by priests for decades, according to a damning report released on Thursday.

Four archbishops routinely protected abusers and failed to inform police of the allegations, according to a three-year investigation into the Dublin Archdiocese, the country's largest.

Responding to the report -- the latest to reveal the scale of Catholic sex abuse -- the government immediately apologised for failing to protect children in Church care, and vowed in a statement that "this can never happen again".

"Whatever the historical and societal reasons for this, the government, on behalf of the state, apologises, without reservation or equivocation, for failures by the agencies of the state in dealing with this issue," it said.

The judicial probe discovered that the archbishops did not report abuse to police until the 1990s as part of a culture of secrecy and an over-riding wish to avoid damaging the reputation of the Church.

The report said: "All other considerations, including the welfare of children and justice for victims, were subordinated to these priorities."

It found that children who complained "were often met with denial, arrogance and cover-up and with incompetence and incomprehension in some cases. Suspicions were rarely acted on."

The study comes just six months after a landmark report in May horrified mainly Catholic Ireland by revealing widespread sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children in Catholic-run institutions dating back to the 1930s.

Irish Justice Minister Dermot Ahern (pictured above) said he read the findings with "a growing sense of revulsion and anger" and promised there would be "no hiding place" for the perpetrators.

"The report catalogues evil after evil committed in the name of what was perversely seen as the greater good," he said.

"There is no escaping the cruel irony that the church, partly motivated by a desire to avoid scandal, in fact created a scandal on an astonishing scale.

"In many, many cases the welfare of children counted for nothing and the abusers were left free to abuse, to visit evil on the innocent.

Victims welcomed the new report.

Marie Collins, who was abused as a child in 1960, said: "This is the end of a very long road for victims of abuse and particularly for those of us who spoke out for so many years, and who were vilified by the church (and) called liars".

The 750-page landmark report by judge Yvonne Murphy is damning in its criticism of failures to protect vulnerable children.

The probe examined complaints of abuse of over 320 children involving a representative sample of 46 priests in the Dublin Archdiocese between 1975 and 2004.

One priest admitted to sexually abusing over 100 children, while another accepted that he had abused on a fortnightly basis over 25 years.

It said the phrase, "don't ask, don't tell" was appropriate to describe the attitude of the archdiocese to clerical sex abuse for most of the period covered by the report.

"Typically, complainants were not told that other instances of child sexual abuse by their abuser had been proved or admitted," it added.

Responding to the report, human rights group Amnesty International called for an urgent referendum to enshrine children's rights in the Irish constitution to prevent future abuse.

"This report makes for deeply shocking reading, even after all that has gone before it," said executive director of Amnesty International Ireland Colm O'Gorman, who was himself a victim of the sexual abuse by priests.

"Bishops in Dublin colluded with child abusers, protecting them and hiding them, enabling them to prey on the innocent. Children were deliberately sacrificed to protect the Church," he said.

How it saddens me to read this. I am an Irish-American woman with dual citizenship. Up until recently I always called myself a Catholic, albeit cafeteria Catholic. However, I can no longer in good consceince identify with or contribute to the RC church. I call myself a "Cathepis," and attend a very loving, caring, giving and accepting of all Episcopal church here in Colorado Springs, a church where priests usually are married, woman are ordained, a woman is the presiding bishop, there is a gay bishop who openly lives with his partner. Their longstanding marriage is accepted and respected by the church. No screaming happens regarding abortion or birth control, and sexual abuse of children and others does not happen, or if it does, it's rare.
By keeping priests from marrying, the RC church kept property and money from being inherited by a priest's spouse and/or children. And by keeping gay clergy (there are many) in the closet, considerable damage is done and the church's denial m.o. is constantly and often tragically reinforced. If enough of us throughout the world switch over to attending a more Catholic and truly Christian Episcopal church, perhaps we can help drag the RC church out of the hell hole where it's descended. And then, just maybe, Teddy Kennedy's son Patrick can once again receive Holy Communion, along with former Presidential candidate John Kerry.

Don't think that the only victims of these animals were Catholic Children. After finishing their "Holy" duties, these animals went off the church grounds to stalk prey at Boy Scout meetings, playgrounds, libraries, and any of the places children are likely to be found, without their costumes so identification is hard. Most of the pedophilia in the world is caused by Christianity as is most of human suffering. Tax the Churches! Make it a class A felony to indoctrinate a child with religion! No more tax free Perversion! Hey Pope! Keep your damned perverse Animals in the Vatican!

This is worldwide and more than a thousand years old. The Canadians are digging up the grounds of every Papist run orphanage and Indian School, and finding hundreds of bodies of children, mostly pregnant girls, in every one of them. The worship of the evilgod of Abraham is the root of all evil and human suffering in this world.! Tax the Churches!...Nuke the Vatican for the good of all Mankind.

  • All this and they keep Congressman Kennedy from receiving communion? Must be they need the children for their own reasons.

The Roman Catholic Church is an evil institution, and how any decent person can remain a part of it is inexplicable.

Already, of course, and has been the practice in the past, gays are being blamed. A pedophile may or may not be gay. The pedophile seeks illicit child sex because he enjoys victimizing the helpless and the innocent. It is about power, violence, and sex, not homosexuality.

Like this stuff isn't happening as we speak worldwide. This is current-day practice. For more than the Catholics. Jesus loves the little children, Jesus died on the Cross, I want to be like Jesus. I don't know of any historical time when this wasn't a perpetual motion machine.

Dougl, exactly! -- better that forced birth kids be molested by closet gay nuns and priests, maimed or murdered by Catholic/CIA/big pharma Nazi medical experiments secretly contracted out to Catholic orphanages, and be brutalized by slave labor rather than be adopted by loving openly gay couples or contracepted by incompetent or impoverished parents! This sex abuse scandal is just the iceberg tip -- I'm a survivor of disfiguring Catholic Munchausen by Proxy medicine and met other victims during Clinton's hearings on human radiation experiments. These other victims were trafficked by Catholic clergy for deadly radiation and biowar experiments. This is the very same church that opposes experiments on BRAINLESS stem cells! Stem cells have "rights" but we already born don't! The sooner this evil cult is kicked off the planet, the safer humanity will be. The world needs to know that anti-birth control Pope Paul VI slaughtered one million Serb "heretics" in WWII when he served as Pius XII's undersecretary of state. When will Catholics stop tolerating abuse of themselves, family members, and their neighbors to win approval from these sanctimonious scum bags? Friends don't let friends be Catholic.

Was there no bishop anywhere in the Irish or American church who would do the right thing when he heard of these allegations? Apparently not.

Assuming that Catholic bishops are men who, at some level, want to do the right thing, how can this total breakdown of morality among the Church's bishops be explained? There is only one explanation possible. The method for dealing with these allegations was determined and the order was passed down... directly from Rome.

Much of the abuse occurred on the watch of Pope John Paul II - who is on the fast track for Canonization. Will Rome ever admit its key part in this huge scandal? Don't bet on it.

Come on Guest. Why would you assume that Catholic bishops are men, not animals? And what in the world would make you assume that any of these animals would want to do the right thing? This is not a breakdown of the Church. This is the Church and Pedophillia has been recorded as running rampant in it for 1600 years. Tax the Churches!
  • Christianity and all its infrastructure need to be wiped from the face of this planet. It's the ONLY way that homo sapiens will ever know any...

    Peace

The Catholic Church congratulated itself because none of the children were adopted by gay parents, that kept them, in the church's eyes, out of harm's way.

A close friend of mine was raised in a notorious Dublin orphanage.
He is actually quite intelligent, although VERY fucked up because of his up-bringing, including slave labor, daily beatings and sexual abuse from both priests and nuns. Sadly, the church actually MADE money off of this affair by knowingly giving victims a pittance of what they where owed, knowing full well that many were too uneducated, afraid, and screwed in the head to ever protest or hire a lawyer. My buddy got about triple what most of the others got, only because he can READ and WRITE. He reckons the church actually took about half of all of what they where supposed to give out. Many of the vicitms were given just enough to drink themselves to death, as many have done, and not nearly enough to invest in anything lucrative, that would give them a proper retirement. No, the church HATES these people for exposing them.
  • dupont44
IF they were really sorry, they'd haul the priests who are still around and throw then into the slammer. But the church is still protecting them by not allowing the priests names to be printed!!
This isn't any repentance, only hollow lip service, what a morally bankrupt organization,
    Shut it down.
The Mormon church had hits squads that murdered innocent settlers at the turn of the century and they also conveniently ignore this fact, by it was in the past etc.
Organized religion is a why for the same old white boys to justify their evils

Where is Bill Donohue when we really need him?

"Individuals may suffer, but the Church goes on."

I forget who first made that observation, but it certainly holds true. The Magdalene Sisters were Irish Catholics and while they defused their complicity in abuse by acknowledging it and apologizing, they never did anything concrete like pay back wages or compensation to the victims still living. Same ol' same ol'.
  • dang
    WOW,
...and people think they should pay these demons to forgive their own sins?
  • disappointedvoter
I damn the entire catholic church for being assholes for many centuries.
  • Heil Mary
Don't forget that mothers were also murdered or grossly maimed by this evil pedophile cult -- Irish hospitals practiced the incontinence- and paralysis-causing torture of sawing petite women's pelvic bones (symphysiotomies) instead of performing safer but pregnancy-limiting (four children total) c-sections just to keep them in incubating slavery for pedophiles! The best revenge for the RCC's abuse of Irish women and children is to legalize abortion and gay marriages, raid all RCC facilities and confiscate all bank accounts and documents, and host an international truth commission of the RCC's centuries of GLOBAL genocide, rape and pillaging.
  • sanchosdad
is anybody surprised at this? anybody? bueller?
  • texasaggie
No, nobody is surprised, just horrified.
