rawstoryafghanistanbase Military officials: Obama leaning toward 34,000 more troops for AfghanistanPresident Barack Obama has begun to favor a plan that would send an additional 34,000 U.S. soldiers to Afghanistan, military officials told McClatchy Newspapers according to a Saturday report.

The president's current plan would require 23,000 soldiers from Fort Campbell and Fort Drum to deploy. An additional 7,000 would support a division headquarters in Kandahar, with 4,000 more trainers coming with them, McClatchy reporter Jonathan S. Landay wrote.

The report continued: "The first additional combat brigade probably would arrive in Afghanistan next March, the officials said, with the other three following at roughly three-month intervals, meaning that all the additional U.S. troops probably wouldn't be deployed until the end of next year. Army brigades number 3,500 to 5,000 soldiers; a Marine brigade has about 8,000 troops."

President Obama has been criticized by Republicans for "dithering" on making a decision whether or not to escalate troop levels in Afghanistan. Speaking to right-wing television outlet Fox News on Thursday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) claimed that he is "past angry" with the president for not having a decision in hand.

"The fact is, we already have men and women over there, and, the longer we delay in sending them the needed resources they need, the greater danger they are in," he said. "And that is just a fundamental fact of warfare."

Admiral Mike Mullen, commonly attributed as America's top military officer, took a different position in a recent interview with the Christian Science-Monitor, saying he is comfortable with the president's time frame and the "depth of the discussion" taking place at the White House.

Should the president -- who ran his campaign promising to end the wars -- decide to commit more troops, a rough estimate by the Pentagon predicts the escalation will cost up to $20 billion per year, breaking down to some $500,000 per soldier, per year.

"The actual costs could be higher, because the estimate does not include the cost of constructing additional facilities, providing support forces such as military intelligence assets that may be based outside Afghanistan or replacing damaged weapons or equipment," CNN noted.

An unnamed, senior administration official told Reuters recently that decision may not come for weeks and almost surely not before the president's trip to Asia from Nov. 11-20.

Officials additionally told McClatchy Newspapers that the administration is highly unlikely to move on Afghan troop levels before discussing plans with NATO allies. NATO's North Atlantic Council Military Committee meets on Nov. 23.

Currently, some 67,000 U.S. soldiers are in country.

    Obama is not what I expected. He sounds good, looks good, but he doesn't DO good. He's losing his base. No war without a war tax, and exempt soldiers who've been sent there. I agree a draft would be a good thing. The minute Obama sends troops, I'm done with him.

    I have no problem with committing American troops to die and bleed in Afganistan as long as it produces JOBS here, and it must reduce the national debt, and it assures all Americans (who stay home) will have healthcare. Oh, and it has to be bi-partisan.

    I propose we re-instituit the DRAFT to assue we have a steady steam of fresh meat to send to the 30-year wars in Afganistan. And I propose a new war TAX on all Americans to pay-as-we-go so that our surviving children will not have to pay for the war and we won't have to borrow more money from China.

    Surely I have left something out, but we cut Social Security benefits to cover that ...

    It was disturbing to read about how upset McCain is as a result of Obama's failure to step lively. I hate to see Johnny get so upset. Isn't there an old F-86 lying around? Allowing him to crash it into a poppy field might cheer him up.

    It's certainly abundantly clear today that when Obama told us, before the election, that Bill Ayers of SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) had absolutely no influence on him, that he was telling the truth ---- because Obama has sure as hell not been doing anything to fight for a 'democratic society' (against economic oppression, racism, imperialist wars, etc. etc.).

    Obama never mentioned anything, before we 'gave him' our votes, about the ruling-elite corporate/financial imperialist war-machine, racist tyranny, and working-class economic inequality that SDS fought against in the late 1960's --- and which, in the last 40 years, has gotten worse.

    Obama was being truthful with us when he totally ignored the very existence of this ruling-elite corporate/financial Empire that controls our country by hiding behind the facade of its two-party 'Vichy' sham of democracy, and he was being totally truthful when he said nothing about this Empire that he himself was auditioning to become the best 'front-man' for.

    It's just that we were too stupid, before the election, to ask him, "Hey, what about this Empire that is killing our country and the world? Will you represent this deceitful and hidden corporate/financial Empire or will you represent us?"

    We never asked him about which side he was on in our battle with Empire --- so he wasn't lying when he said, and now has done, exactly nothing.

  • OH, But he did tell us. Not word for word, but he did tell us. His main foreign policy advisers before the election were ZBIG, and Albright. Even Heinz Kissinger [Dr. Strangelove] approved of him and his appointments.

    The president does not bring his regime. The regime brings the president.

    THEY SELECT, SO WE AMY ELECT.
    Obama was the [chosen one] to continue the agenda of the global elite.
  • The industry of protecting America at home and abroad costs the government over one trillion dollars annually. It employs millions. It is debatable if Americans need that much protection. Some call it an extortion scam.
  • We are protecting the global corps, and the MIC. Gen. Smedley D. Butler told us all about it in his book [ War is A RACKET.] [CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMIC HIT MAN] Summed it all up and brought it up to date.

    This is the defintion of madness! The Karzai government is corrupt and widely seen as illegitimate by both the Afghan people and the rest of the world. The Afghan people see the US presence as an occupying force, just as they did with the Russians and the British before us. For a smart guy, Obama sure is making the dumbest, but of course, most politically expedient decision. He continues to fear those who would never ever vote for him, and to shun and ignore the Democratic base, who expect him to end the Bush war policies. Will he, like Johnson, wait until this war consumes his presidency?

    The Ministry of Change has announced the chocolate ration will be increasing from 1 oz per week to 1 milligram!

    Ministry of Change. I like that.
  • And so it goes. We are in a state of endless wars. It should by now be obvious that we are not pulling out of the region any time soon. Afghanistan is also a staging area to encroach, and enter the rest of the region. Including Pakistan, Russia, and China. We are the centurions for the energy corridor that Afghanistan is right in the middle of. This has nothing to do with Obama, HE was the chosen one to continue this agenda by [TPTB] the powers that be. [THEY SELECT SO WE MAY ELECT].

    Hey! "Peace President"! You gonna have bulls eyes painted on these guys? Have you told them that they are going over to face mutation and death for NO REASON?! Gawd damned lying-to-get-elected fucking hypocrite! DENNIS is coming after you in a few years! We're tired of lying, corporate CEO presidents! DAMN, I've had it with this fucking "cash and carry government"!!!
  • Troops always need to be deployed. They are wasted by having nothing to do.

    "Should the president -- who ran his campaign promising to end the wars -- decide to commit more troops..."

    That statement is ENTIRELY UNTRUE.

    President Obama as a Senator running for President NEVER said he promised to end the wars.

    He promised he would try and bring our troops home from Iraq (and actually he has) but he also made VERY clear that he thought we needed to focus on the war in Afghanistan and our threats in Pakistan.

    Many libs are trying to paint this unfair picture that he was some kind of dove across the board on the war.

    He said, "I don't oppose all wars...I oppose DUMB wars."

    Iraq = DUMB WAR

    Afghanistan = NECESSARY

    And what will all of you are against it say if God forbid we get attacked again?

    I am a New Yorker who lived her during 9/11.

    Justice must be served and I FULLY support President Obama in staying true to his REAL promise on the campaign trail to get Bin Laden.
  • Democratic_Socialist
    AFGHANISTAN = ANOTHER DUMB WAR!!!
    How the hell do YOU rationalize it as NECESSARY unless you figure our fat fucking noses are WANTED in the Middle East. I sure as shit don't remember an invitation to go kill civilians for no good reason.

    OH...and he DID promise single-payer when elected; its on video. Wasn't THAT a lie to get elected?!

    Osama? Leave the bastard alone, get out, and I'll bet my VA benefits he will leave us alone. What they do in their own back yards is their own fucking business--right OR wrong by Capitalistic standards!
