petervedala Media erroneously links mans firing to gay marriage debateThe news headlines say he was fired for expressing opposition to same-sex marriage, but by his own admission, Peter Vadala lost his job as a store manager because he believed God wanted him to tell a co-worker that homosexuality is wrong.

And the retailer he worked for says he was fired because he used the word "deviant" to describe homosexuals, and added that he "hates" gay people.

Vadala's story has become a popular topic among conservative activists in recent weeks, who last August lost his job as an assistant manager at a Brookstone outlet at Boston's Logan Airport.

"Man fired for advocating traditional marriage," says a headline at the conservative OneNewsNow site. "Massachusetts man says he was fired for telling colleague her gay marriage is wrong," says the headline at the Fox News site.

But the story the 24-year-old Vadala told Fox News indicates he lost his job for expressing views against homosexuals as a whole, and not against same-sex marriage.

Story continues below...

Vadala told Fox News he confronted a Brookstone store manager who was visiting from another location after she repeatedly mentioned her engagement to another woman.

"I found it offensive that she repeatedly brought it up," Vadala said. "By the fourth time she mentioned it, I felt God wanted me to express how I felt about the matter, so I did. But my tone was downright apologetic. I said, 'Regarding your homosexuality, I think that's bad stuff.'"

According to Vadala, the woman replied, "Human resources, buddy — keep your opinions to yourself."

But according to the gay-issues news site Tips-Q, Brookstone says Vadala "used the word 'deviant' with both the manager in question and the Brookstone HR executive. He also referred to "the homosexual lifestyle" and told a co-worker "I hate people like that."

Vadala disputes that he ever said those words. In an interview with Fox News on Monday morning, he said he had not yet decided whether he would pursue a legal case against his former employer.

Fox News quoted Brookstone CEO Ron Boire, who said, "Brookstone is an equal opportunity employer. ... We are proud of our diverse workforce of varying cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds."

"Obviously Christians are excluded from that," Vadala retorted. "I can't believe that [Boire] had the audacity to say something so erroneously false."

Progressive bloggers say Vedala's right to believe whatever he chooses does not extend to criticizing co-workers for their sexual orientation.

"He didn't defend traditional marriage, he didn't attack gay marriage. He told the woman that her homosexuality was wrong," writes James Urbaniak at LiveJournal. "He knew she was gay because she'd mentioned the sex of her fiance but Peter Vadala's issue with her was that she was gay, period. Her marriage was so much icing on her gay cake."

But conservative bloggers insist that the political issue of gay marriage, and not Vedala's actions, are the key issue here.

"This is a chilling example of the ultimate consequences of imposing the concept of same-sex 'marriage' through force of law," says an unsigned posting at the MassResistance blog. "We've certainly seen it coming. What happened to Peter is actually what was intended by the homosexual movement. It's about making people accept what they normally would not accept and punishing those who resist."

"Obviously Christians are excluded from that," Vadala retorted.

No, obviously you don't understand the word "diverse," which means "a wide variety." It does NOT mean "Only ignorant Christians are allowed to say whatever they think and get away with it."
  • If that's his picture, well, let's just say that he pegs my gaydar. Methinks he doth protest to much.
  • tarrant042
If he trimmed his eyebrows, I'd concur. Since he doesn't, I'm voting for straight and ignorant vs. gay and confused.

It seems that the TRUE issue here is that Peter Vadala and 'heterosexuals' just like him simply can not fathom that their abuse, degradation, and humiliation of Gay Americans will not be tolerated in the work place. Peter Vadala and his supporters have for so long felt ENTITLED to their abuse of gay Americans, they simply can not see their sin. Even when masked as 'god.' freedom of religion does NOT include the freedom to abuse gay people, Peter Vadala. You give god a BAD BAD reputation, my 'heterosexual' brother.

That Peter Vadala feels that it is his RIGHT to abuse, humiliate and degrade gay people right to their face in the work place makes 'heterosexuals' assuming a position of moral superiority to gay people look as truly pathetic as their beliefs.

Most amazing is that Peter Vadala would present himself as a 'godly' person while acting in direct opposition to what his 'saviour' commands of him. Proving, once again, there is simply no love quite like 'Christian' hate, and that the only DECENT 'Christian' appears to have been killed on a cross.

Morality indeed, Peter Vadala (and your kind.) Morality indeed.

The decent people of this world grow weary of your immoral use of god to justify your hatred and bigotry. And that you would use god SO immorally says WAY more about you than any gay person you attack so cowardly using the bible as your shield.

We love you. But we F'ing HATE your sins, Peter Vadala.

Kudos on a fine response. You captured the essence of the "God, save me from your followers" response so many of us have to these haters who claim the benison of God and religion upon their twisted hate.

Don't you just enjoy seeing a holy-roller use "LOVE" to justify their hate?1

While I make it a rule to never watch anything on FOX, I did watch the clip. He starts to make sense if you substitute the word bigot every time he says Christian. Clearly, the woman in question felt comfortable talking to him about her fiance because she assumed he was gay - this threatened him. Curious that he describes the woman in question as having difficulty coming to grips with her sexuality. I didn't get that from the story. Maybe he got confused about whom he was talking.

Why are fundies all such dimwits? If they weren't, they wouldn't be.

Yeah, I see a self loather there.

He dislikes gays probably because from the way he looks himself...people often think he is one.

    And probably is.

Except he's so deep in the closet, he's pooping hangers.

Christians are welcome, they just need to keep their hateful mouths closed outside of church. Much like if the visiting manager decided to point out that she hated biased christians who call her names, she would of lost her job too.

In light of the 170-some-million US citizens who self-identify as Christian, I have to ask this poor fool, when he talks about what Christians "are not allowed to do," (paraphrasing that respected theologian, Scooby-do), "Whuuuuuh?" And I just think he's icky. The idea of him breeding is blood-curdling, but please oh please don't tell us he's gay. Ugh!
  • thepoliticalcat
Um, I hate to break this to ya, hon, but he's got my gaydar ringing a seven-bell alarm. I'm thinkin' "biggest queen in the closet." Sure, we don't *want* him, but hey, we're stuck with the Log Cabin dudes and dudines too, yaknow?

Ignore for the moment the argument about whether this was about gay marriage. Ignore for the moment how hetero privilege allows 9 out of 10 people to talk about their spouses and partners, including the sex of said partners or wives, as if it is simply a part of life. Ignore for the moment the twisting of the story by the media.

Instead, pretend that you are Brookstone management and one of your employees has such reduced impulse control that not only does he spew offensive statements to coworkers, but to a *manager* from another store, someone above him in the organizational hierarchy. Just making the statements breaks the agreement he made with the company to follow their policies. To make the statements as a personal attack to a superior? Someone like that would have no qualms about doing the same to customers and *should* be fired on the spot, he's a liability. Oh, and a bigot and certainly NOT a Christian as described by that Christ guy in that book...
  • Fox has no business using the phrase "Lesbian Lifestyle." It's not journalistic, and further proof that Fox News is not a real news organization.
  • marxymcliberalson
Yea, I read in the Bible ALL the time Jesus telling off everyone he hates. there's this one part...where Jesus says you have heard of the phrase "and eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" and he says "but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him and call him a deviant and tell him how much you hate him and all his kind" then there's this other part where Jesus says "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Call your enemies deviants and hate them with all your heart"
  • anthonysavage
Chances are if the guy overheard another guy talking about how he 'banged' his fiance all the time. he would completely overlook it. what a douche...
and I love how he said "you report fair and balance, cause you're Fox News" hahaha

i think it is time people took their head out of their ass's and stoped letting people who worship a hebrew zombie dictate policy, an be able to say things that are abusive and fall back on the bible.
  • marxymcliberalson
TOTALLY OUTRAGEOUS. How can you call JESUS a zombie???? Zombie's walk around and eat peoples brains. Jesus just kind of disappeared after re-animating, I'd say he's more like a Vampire.

Oh and as long as we're telling the truth christianity and especially Catholicism is based on cannibalism.

    He's gone!
    Wait, no, he's back!
    No, wait; he's gone!
    Well, he's sort of gone...
Okay, part of him is gone.
But I have part of him right here...
Hmmm. Hey, are you going to eat that?

The accurate reporting of events goes waaaay back...
