palin stageright Matthews: Palin attracts white versus other people crowdSarah Palin's most fervent supporters have been characterized in a lot of different ways, some of them far more unflattering than "monochromatic." That was the word MSNBC's Chris Matthews chose to use, however, in describing the crowd at Palin book signing Wednesday in Michigan -- though he hastened to add, "not that there's anything wrong with it."

"Can you find out what their belief is in Governor Palin?" Matthews asked Norah O'Donnell, who was reporting for MSNBC from the scene.

"I think it's an emotional connection," O'Donnell replied. "A lot of the people I spoke with today were unable to articulate exactly why they supported Sarah Palin. ... This is a largely white -- almost no minorities in this crowd -- and they're here because they love Sarah Palin."

"They look like a white crowd to me," Matthews agreed heartily. "Not that there's anything wrong with it, but it is pretty monochromatic up there. ... Nothing wrong with that, but it is a fact."

Matthews then turned to Salon's Joan Walsh to ask about the "nastiness" of Palin's attacks on McCain campaign staffers, exclaiming, "Here's somebody who was governor of a state ... trashing little people!"

"I think that there are a couple of whopping lies," Walsh said of Palin's account in her book of the 2008 campaign, "as well as just a mean-spiritedness that doesn't serve her well. ... It's why she'll never be president. ... She's a very divisive, mean-spirited person. ... People who love her, love her, but the general public doesn't trust her."

"She is the anti-politician," O'Donnell chimed in. "They're mad at the Newsweek cover, they think it's sexist, they think that the media has beaten up on her. ... There's a lot of adoring fans out there."

Matthews, however, was not ready to let go of the racial aspect. "I think there's a tribal aspect to this thing" he insisted,"in other words, white versus other people." Pointing to Palin's call for "profiling" as a response to the Fort Hood shootings, he commented, "Everybody knows what 'profile' means -- it's Driving While Black."

Some conservative blogs have since complained that Matthews is suggesting "that racism is at the heart of her appeal."

Walsh, however, avoided responding to Matthew's implications of racism. "She plays the victim card, and this obviously resonates ... with part of the base," Walsh concluded. "I don't think Barack Obama has to fear her ... but definitely Mitt Romney and that totally uncharismatic crew, they have to be shaking in their boots."

"These other candidates are so boring that she sparkles," Matthews agreed.

  • I don't think there's an inherent racism at all. She attracts right wing christian evangelicals that are uneducated and label the educated as 'liberal elites'. The fact that most of those right wing christian evangelicals are white has less to do with racism than it does a demographic of people that are traditionally white and fearful of change and diversity. It's sad really. Pandering to the uneducated seems like a great way to f*ck up this country even more.

    Oh yea????? Wake up.

Not everybody finds the "Slutty Stewardess" look appealing. In fact a large percentage of the normal intelligent population get "soft-ons" over Caribou Barbie. Her Newsweek cover is kind of vomit inducing if you ask me. And her total ignorance of everything is really a turn-off.

"... This is a largely white -- almost no minorities in this crowd..."

Sounds exactly like the national republican convention crowd. So white it looked like a sea of hats floating on marshmallow fluff.

True change will be obvious when you go to a RNC gig and it looks like a sea of velcro floating on chocolate watermelon.

We could do without out this comment.

"White vs other people"... I guess regular troll NeoNaziAtlantic must be a fan of Palin's too. Either way, it's laughable that these morons would prefer to be (mis-)led by a moronic bimbo capable of nothing more than reciting right-wing talking points... than having an intelligent black president.
  • tomhoser
Not even well articulated points. Listening to her makes no sense, she can't even answer a simple question; and she is what is championed by the right?

Is there any way to be proud of one's race without incurring someone's wrath for being a racist?

White people are the most racist people I know. But let me back up...

I guess it depends on how you define 'race.' My mom is Polish, and although shes' very proud of it and she's been working on her genealogy for years and years (at the expense of everything else; her house is a complete disaster, piles of trash everywhere, I could go on but i won't) she's definitely stupid. She's proud to be Polish, but that doesn't make her racist.

Anyway, back to my point: white people are the most racist people I know. If you have any knowledge of the 'war on (some) drugs' it doesn't take much to realize it's a war on minorities; Asians smoked opium, so opium was outlawed. Mexicans smoked 'marijuana' (devil weed with roots in hell!) so cannabis was outlawed. Cocaine was blamed on blacks, although Ulysses S. Grant was addicted to it to sooth the throat cancer he had from habitual cigar smoking...

White people determined to keep themselves at the top of the chain.

I'm white and I'm embarrassed by it, I feel bad for the millions of nonviolent minorities serving hard time in prison for 'possession' of friggin' plants that are older than our species itself. We've been using these substances for millions of years and then all the sudden at the turn of the 20th century Uncle Sam outlaws them so he can replace outlawed slave labor with prison labor.

Alcohol is by far the most dangerous drug on the planet because no other drug, legal or not, turns its user into a stumbling, belligerent moron.

Why are you proud of your race? Because you think it holds some value above and beyond other races? If you think about this stance, it amounts to white supremacy.

I don't know about you, but I've met way too many fucked up idiotic white people to think for a millisecond that my race is superior to any other.
  • edwards_com
If it were 'pride' as if a choice was involves & they didn't bash, wish to destroy, murder, ET anything that is not 'just them them' I would agree.
  • aldoraines
Minorities can be proud of their race without any criticism. But if whites show their pride they are racist. It's a stupid double-standard. Or reverse racism. It's become perfectly acceptable to discriminate against whites while at the same time, society demands a different standard for minorities. I think this is why a lot of right-wingers are so unhinged. They see this happening and believe that they are being punished for the sins of their father's father's father. Racism is racism whether it's against whites, blacks, asians, etc.

OldAtlantic hasn't even left a comment in this thread, so it's you that fails. Horrible, horrible straw man argument.

I don't think she looks like a "slutty stewardess" I think she looks like a beautiful woman for her age. But what she looks like and who she is, are two completely different things. The fanatical religious-right ARE going to rally around a figurehead, and if it isn't Sarah Palin it would just be somebody else. That's the real message. These people are essentially telling us that they don't care if their president of the United States is a moronic, psychiatric basket-case so long as their president of the United States completely outlaws abortion, terminates any further discussion of same-sex marriage, supports Israel unconditionally because they are "God's chosen people," despises Muslims, Hiindus, Buddhists, Pagans, atheists, secular humanists, rejects evolution, supports creationism, and considers him or herself as "guided by the Holy Spirit" and believes that "big government" only equals higher taxes.

Now, the fact that Sarah Palin happens to fit every single one of those requirements is the real message here. It doesn't matter to them if she's dumb as an ox when it comes to complex decision making or any other personal attribute necessary to govern a small town, a state, or an entire country. These people are serious about their agenda to the point of imposing upon not just the United States, but upon the entire world a person who is utterly incapable of governing in the "worldly" sense so long as she governs in the "Godly" sense. Are far as these people are concerned, the "Holy Spirit" would be guiding her decisions anyway. It's a scary set of circumstances, and it should be taken very seriously. But the point is, that if Sarah Palin didn't meet all of their requirements, they'd just find somebody else who would.

So it isn't Sarah Palin that we have to worry about, it's the mindset of the people who stand behind her. I have some of these people in my own extended family. One of them actually has a PhD and was a TV executive for 35 years. Prior to that, he was an ordained, seminary-trained minister. I spent from 1996 until 2001 sending him extremely logical progressive articles via e-mail--I sent loads of original-source material, I sent rational arguments, I pointed out logical flaws in the thinking of the religious right, I quoted scripture, I mailed him extremely enlightening DVD documentaries, I sent him a couple of books, I did virtually everything possible in attempting to get this man to seriously examine his Christian Evangelical world view, and all I ever got in response was an occasional "I disagree." He didn't even so much as attempt to refute any of my analysis, he never attempted to explain his position, he simply ignored me. And this was my very own uncle. And he's a highly educated man. And he supports Sarah Palin.

So it's not just a bunch of raving lunatics out there having "tea party" demonstrations that this country and the entire world needs to worry about. It's a cold and calculating, creeping fascism that is wrapped up in the hypocrisy of religion. And in my case at least, it's one hell of a lot stronger than "family."

Their sole intent is to inflict Rapture on this nation and the rest of the world.....it is extremely dangerous and I put these people in the same category as extreme Muslim Terrorists. Homeland Security needs to keep an eye on ALL of these fanatics! Scary stuff....
