gop To Dems delight, Matalin attempts defense of proposed GOP purity testLongtime GOP strategist Mary Matalin thinks that maybe a "purity test" for Republican candidates is a good thing. And at least one of her counterparts in the Democratic party agrees.

Appearing on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 on Friday, Matalin suggested that a "purity test" would not exclude moderate Republicans but instead grow the GOP.

Such a test is "[not] excluding anybody, except Nancy Pelosi Democrats," she said, claiming that all it would do is ensure Republican funds don't push any "liberal lite" candidates. "I applaud these members who have taken the initiative to come up with these ten points, all of which -- and I defy my friend Paul to find me any blue dog Democrat that wouldn't agree with at least eight out of ten of these mainstream principles."

Appearing with her, Paul Bagala, a Democratic strategist, essentially mocked the idea by agreeing with her.

"The Republicans are all about driving people out right now," he said. "And I think it's a great idea. So if you're, for example, if you believe in, like, evolution or gravity or photosynthesis or any of the stuff that Republicans are afraid of, come on over to the Democratic Party. You know, we're the party right now of the mainstream. Wasn't always the case. But God bless the Republicans."

As he made the comment, Matalin tilted her head back and stared at the ceiling.

"[The] country is two to one conservative," she said. "And the -- it's not -- people don't identify themselves, people who do identify themselves as Republicans and Democrats are in the minority. Who identifies themselves as independents are 2 to 1 conservative. And they're increasingly opposed to these big government programs that President Obama has ushered in. And it's hurting the party."

Begala fired back with sarcasm.

"I think this is great," he said. "I think the Republicans should go back to the Dark Ages. And don't stop there. Go all the way to the Stone Age. This is what I want as a Democrat. I couldn't be happier. It's my Thanksgiving gift from the RNC. And I want to thank the Republicans for trying to keep the Democrats in the center."

According to a Think Progress analysis, at least 40 current Republican members of Congress would find themselves at odds with some part of the proposed "purity test," should it come to fruition.

Additionally, the 10 points on the test -- ranging from "victory" in Iraq and Afghanistan to "protecting" sick people by maintaining present health insurance policies that allow thousands to die for lack of insurance -- would have prevented even prior Republican presidents from receiving GOP money.

The measure would likely have screened out President Ronald Reagan, under whose watch the US deficit ballooned. The federal deficit mushroomed from 2.7 percent of gross domestic product in 1980, to 6 percent in 1983.

Reagan also agreed to a $165 billion bailout of Social Security, in contradiction of conservative orthodoxy (though he did drastically reduce the top income tax brackets for Americans).

The Gipper also raised the gasoline tax in 1983.

George W. Bush would have had trouble too, Washington Monthly notes.

Bush, too, dramatically increased the size of the federal deficit, which was turning surpluses under his predecessor, President Bill Clinton. He also broke with conservatives on the issue of opposing blanket amnesty for undocumented immigrants.

Mary Matalin is married to famed Democratic strategist James Carville.

I like it too. The further these idiots marginalize themselves, the better.

Did not Hitler Adolph conduct his own purity test? you know, the blond hair/blue eye aryan? Do you see a pattern? The Nazi, the Republican, Nazi, Republican, Nazi, Republican, Nazi, Republican? Hmmm, seems like the party on the Reich er right took a page from their herr leader
  • jdouglas
Damn. You mean there were two other people on that program?

I always got the impression that Matalin is best at sucking up.

Matalin is married to James Carval. I could never understand that.

Dumb asses! Don't you holy rollers realize that Jesus Christ hisself wouldn't pass your test?

It is rather perfect, as soon as you lock into a rigid set of criteria, there is no room for compromise or debate which means if you as a voter disagree with any point you have a good argument to vote another way.

Didn't Himmler do something like this? Some kind of purity test to get into the SS?
  • Freedom's Toast
I don't think even she believes what she's saying. She simply understands there are plenty of ignorant, uneducated, benighted folk who will eat it up like biscuits 'n' gravy. And she'll continue to make scads of money pandering to the unfortunate Americans who've been duped by the specter of diminishing American world-domination.
A more cynical game I cannot imagine. Traitorous. She's no better than the corporate hucksters who ruined our economy and laughed all the way to the bank.

Of course, there are so many like her, or who would willingly take her place as another talking head, as to stagger the imagination.

Wake up, America. You're being played yet again.

It's the "NOPE" Party........"Narcissistic Old Party Elephants". Always looking for a place to put their "trunks" to suck the "living daylights" out of the middle class. And, by the way, why are the "stars" on their elephant upside down? According to the christers, that is a "satanic" symbol representing the "goats" head. Freaks.
  • Gray
Denny, it's not the stars that are upside down! It's the elephant that is actually lying on its back, in its last breaths, and the GOP wants to hide that fact by turning the picture by 180 degrees.

Mary Matalin is usually pretty astute. If the GOP is looking for more Chris Christie's, i.e., staunch conservatives who speak with a northeastern accent, then there is nowhere to go but up.

If Matalin is looking to criminalize women's freedom to control their fertility, to outlaw free speech in foreign languages, to enforce blue nose sexual standards by statute, to disenfranchise millions of voters with spurious registration requirements, to weaken workplace rights with at will employment clauses and to continue to support tax and spending policies that favor extragavant millionaires the GOP will continue to fail.

Either way, the Democratic Party will continue to stand tall for workers rights, gender equality, racial justice and defense and social policies that defend people rather corporations.

"Either way, the Democratic Party will continue to stand tall for workers rights, gender equality, racial justice and defense and social policies that defend people rather corporations."

Well, considering that workers' wages have been flat since the early '70s, they're doing a pretty shitty job of it. What is our current incarceration rate for minorities v. whites (soon to be a plurality)? Again, not doing so well on that. Womens compensation v. men? Oh, still working on that too, are we? Screw the dems.

The "F the President" bumper sticker now has four more years of life under a democratic president. Why? 'Cause nothing's changed.

Mary Matalin always brings to mind an arcane word--mattoid. In fact, it could have been coined just for her. It means "not insane but only by the slimmest of margins." As in, "she hasn't gone completely around the bend, but damn that turn signal has been on for a long time."

Great news! And now comes Battylyn to the forefront as THE RePUKEliCUNT shithead's standard for the PURITY test PR...I love it! With her brain-farting assinine malarky, it's obvious to me the once GOP is scraping the bottom of the proverbial barrel.
  • It really never ceases to amaze me as to how much republicans hate other Americans. If they keep up their hatred it'll only get better for the Dems. I once voted for a republican, but it'll never ever happen again. Maybe they should all just secede from the Union, maybe this time we'll let them.
