gaza US lawmakers condemn Gaza war crimes report as unworthy of legitimacyThe US House of Representatives condemned Tuesday the UN Goldstone report as unfairly accusing Israel of committing war crimes in its 22-day war against Palestinian militants in Gaza.

By a margin of 344-36, lawmakers approved a non-binding resolution that calls the report "irredeemably biased and unworthy of further consideration or legitimacy."

The symbolic measure also urges President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "to strongly and unequivocally oppose" any discussion of the report or action on its findings in any international setting.

The Obama administration has already condemned the report, which was expected to go to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, as unhelpful to its efforts to revive stalled Middle East peace talks.

"I think the UN report is unbalanced, and unfair, and inaccurate," said Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

"It's unfortunate that the United Nations deals with Israel, in my opinion, in a totally biased and unbalanced way. And it is the only country in the world, Israel, that has a special focus by the United Nations," he added.

"I have been to Gaza and I have read in its entirety the Goldstone report and I will tell you he says many things, that though unpleasant, are true, and must not be obstructed," countered Democratic Representative Brian Baird.

Baird bolstered his speech against the resolution with photographs of dead Palestinian children and Israeli children seeking shelter during a suspected Palestinian rocket attack.

The resolution, crafted by Republican Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, expressed support for the Obama administration's condemnation of the report and urges opposition to its findings in any international forum.

"The Goldstone Report illustrates the anti-freedom, anti-Israel bias which deeply pervades the UN system, and it does not deserve consideration or legitimacy from responsible nations," she said after the vote.

"Even in the fog of war, it is clear that Israel took every reasonable measure to minimize the risk of civilian casualties. It is clear that Israel had every right and duty to defend its citizens from the onslaught of rocket and mortar attacks from Hamas and other militants in Gaza," she said.

Named after former South African judge Richard Goldstone, who headed the inquiry committee, the UN report accuses Israel and Hamas militants of war crimes during the 22-day conflict that flared up in late December 2008 and ended in January, leaving some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead.

Goldstone recommended that Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas -- which rules the tiny Palestinian coastal enclave -- face possible prosecution in The Hague if they fail to conduct credible investigations within six months.

Hoyer said rocket fire from Palestinian fighters in Gaza had placed Israel in "an unfortunate position" and stressed that Israel "is as careful a government as there is in terms of prosecuting its own defense" officials.

On Monday, Human Rights Watch urged lawmakers not to back the resolution, said the Goldstone report "presents an opportunity to pursue justice for the victims in Gaza and Israel."

"Instead of denouncing the report, the US Congress should urge Israel and Hamas to break the cycle of abuse and impunity, which for too long has fueled hatred and hindered efforts at peace," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch.

    RS,

How 'bout a little truth in the headline -- please change from "US Lawmakers..." to "AIPACS cowardice Congressional minions..."

We (the US citizenry) MUST make Congress members more afraid of us than they are of AIPAC or this shit will simply NEVER end.
  • steve123bigd
I just don't see why American lawmakers think it's ok for Israel to pursue an ethnocracy at the expense of human rights. Israel is based on Jewish nationalism, not real democracy. The United States has become Israel's enabler to pursue the creation of an apartheid state.

    A very sad day indeed.
My heart goes out to all the children who are suffering across our world, but especially Palestine of which there are many, if there's one thing that can send some people to extremes with GOOD reason, it is seeing their children suffering and dying because of an entrenched belief that Palestinian land belongs to israel because god said so (what a crock of shit), you only have to look at the ever changing borders since 1948 to 1967 right up to this day to know that this is true, this is very wrong.

What is happening to us? Where is the outrage at all of the cockups being made in our names? Are we all suffering from some kind of collective shock induced apathy to what's been happening in our own countries and around the world since 911?
I know that the average American and British people and people the world over are better than this, but their will has been suppressed by power hungry evil and lunacy, who have a natural born disconnect from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empathy ...
  • yvonneo
Natural born disconnect from empathy sounds like a sociopath to me. Sociopaths are interested only in their personal needs and desires, without concern for others or the effects of their behavior on others. I think you could search the entire world and not find one empathetic sociopath.

I think the problem is that people in general--but particularly in America and Britain--are in a state of denial about the fact that our respective countries and other democractic societies have been taken over by a bunch of sociopaths.

I think power and wealth attracts sociopaths. So it would do us well to remember this when electing future leaders. We would be wise to determine their motives for seeking high office to ensure we're not being conned. I think because they consider it to be in their best interests, once sociopaths gain office they seek others of like mind to fill important govt positions in order to hold on to the power they so crave.

This too, shall linger. The stench of Israel's behaviour is in many people's nostrils and that US Congress condones it.

Despicable. As a U.S. citizen I'm disgusted with our Government's continued support of a racist ideology.

Our tax dollars are used to corral indigenous people, treat them like dogs, AND (with an 'okey-dokey' from MY Government) execute those who don't act like dogs.

    Despicable.

Eventually, Israelis will be wiped out or driven from Palestinian land. When the world has had enough.....can't come soon enough for my tastes.
  • Steven
Well, there you have it folks...here are your traitors to America and humanity.

"The Goldstone Report illustrates the anti-freedom, anti-Israel bias which deeply pervades the UN system, and it does not deserve consideration or legitimacy from responsible nations..." Goldstone is jewish, so how can this statement be true? Also, how is it biased against Israel, when both Israel and Hamas are accused of war crimes in this report?

Our govt has failed the American people on so many levels and absolutely refuses to do the right thing by prosecuting its own war criminals, so naturally, they're not too keen on prosecuting one of our so-called allies accused of the same. (Wow. Think of it. A whole new concept to what it means to be an ally. Co-war criminals--torturers, thieves, butcherers, killers of children and thousands of innocent people, the use of white phosperous against innocent civilian populations--I guess those accused of war crimes have to stick together and protect each other.)

I don't understand how anyone can continue to view military service as being heroic, honorable, or anything to be proud of, when all they're really doing is using force to further the corporate interests of America and what it has become as a result--the evil empire.

I do sense a deep, deep rage and resentment building in the American people. I can feel it everywhere and fear the backlash to follow--it will be like none other we've seen or heard of before. It will be massive and it will be horrible, but when all is said done, truth, justice and the people will prevail and those that brought us to this place will be no more.
  • Suggested headline change:

US lawmakers voting YES for HR 867 condemn themselves as ‘unworthy’ of ‘legitimacy’

Updated with the roll call vote here:
    http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll838.xml

Notice that it's always the same very few members like Kucinich, Ron Paul, Lynn Woolsey and the 33 others who stand for us against the overwhelming force of 400,000 rabid lobbyists who have bought and paid for the rest of Congress to do their criminal corrupt bidding.
  • dotmafia
The entire United States government, its elected members and their lobbyists, and the U.S. justice system is deeply corrupt and very evil.

They have no legs to stand on when issuing judgements on morality, legitimacy, truth or bias.

    Absolutely none.
  • jthebear
Shame on the cowards that run our neo-con foreign policy. Hamas is guilty. But Israel is too. We are in all likelihood weeks away from the next Israeli strike on Lebanon. How much more suffering can the U. S. inflict on the families of American servicemen and the civilian population of Afghanistan before it feels compelled to broaden the conflict to Iran?
  • davidrvelasquez
US lawmakers and their kowtowing to AIPAC is not only "unworthy" but shames the rest of us.
  • rts111
When a conflict has a 1:100 kill rate ratio, I think the average person would agree this is a one-sided conflict.

In fact, it is a ridiculous outcome for a war, as if one side was only armed with stones.

What the IDF (and their American backers ) wants the Arab world to realize is this could easily have been an invasion with a ratio of 1:1000 dead or worse - and next time it just might be...
  • mick
Before this announcement I thought rumors of Americans allowing Israel the leeway to do anything it wants legal or illegal ,where overstated. Now it is clear that the US Government and the people of America are complicit and guilty of the crimes committed by Israel.
It is clear that "Israel's enabler" deserves the same respect as Israel...none!
  • donofcali
Another perfect example of how the Zionist government of Israel tells our congress and our president what to do.

We need to break the bond with Israel. Stop giving this developed country financial and military aid. Stop it cold. Stop it now.
  • Chip
    It IS a crappy report.
  • farang
    Excuse me: Fuck You.
  • davidrvelasquez
How?... even a number of israeli soldiers said that they were given no rules of engagement. That they were shooting randomly any palestinians they saw...men, women AND children. Reports showed that palestinian refugees fleeing from the fighting were directed BY THE IDF to a school compound and told it was a sanctuary...minutes later it was bombed by the IDF (researchers reported later that an illegal experimental phosphur bomb was used) .........how the fuck is that a "crappy" report. Soldiers and even a couple of officers tried to testify against IDF actions and nothing was done and the whole issue was buried.
If you found it crappy then either you didn't like what it revealed or you yourself didn't bother to read it or about it or read anything about the invasion itself besides a few superficial reports. In which case, no one can help you.
