kkkprotestcapitoldc KKK demonstration draws hundreds of protesters to Ole MissA small group of Ku Klux Klan members want Mississippi students to know that they're fans of the song "From Dixie With Love."

In a brief rally Saturday, shy of a dozen KKK members gathered at the University of Mississippi to show their support for the song, which the school band was recently forbidden from playing. Their gathering was planned ahead of an Ole Miss football game.

The demonstration, however, did not last more than 10 minutes, according to the Associated Press.

'"From Dixie with Love' is one of Ole Miss’ traditional songs on game day, and the student section has chanted 'the South will rise again' during the song for years, said Brian Ferguson, alumni chairman of the Colonel Reb foundation," The Daily Reveille, a Mississippi student newspaper, reported.

The school's chancellor banned the song after the Ole Miss Associated Student Body voted to replace chants of "the South will rise again" with "to hell with LSU." While the student body's vote was not enacted, Chancellor Dan Jones firmly agreed with the sentiment.

"We cannot even appear to support those outside our community who advocate a revival of racial segregation," he said, according to the AP. "We cannot fail to respond."

The short-lived KKK protest was originally planned to last an hour. An estimated 250 counter-protesters turned out, many wearing shirts which read: "Turn your back on hate."

"Two people were killed on campus in 1962 during riots when the first black student, James Meredith, was enrolled at the university," AP added. "Federal marshals had to protect Meredith during the court-ordered enrollment."

old miss needs to do what many other places have done. you cannot necessarily prohibit the KKK and other hate groups from holding a rally. (one happened not a mile from my own house) but you can make them pay full retail value for all the security that they require. every cop, every car, every dispatcher, every mounted patrolman, every barricade. and make sure that it is all on overtime. this runs into the tens of thousands of dollars. even more if you throw in the police helicopter. this has worked in dallas texas, miami, and elsewhere. in dallas, you have to put up the money in cash when you get your gathering permit.

this policy basically ended the protests that used to clog downtown dallas in the early 90's. if you want to play, you gotta pay. up front. cash only.

On the other hand, that makes it very hard for the poor to protest and present their grievances, and ensures that only well funded groups have their voices heard. So, I think while your idea is effective, it is also a double edge sword for trying to fight for change in the system and disenfranchises some worthy groups.

Wow, sanchosdad. That's a very practical, simple, and elegant solution. Kudos on your creativity and clear thinking. BTW, in case anybody wonders, I'm NOT being sarcastic.

i was at a party with the mayor of my home town (omaha) and i got to explain this to the newly elected mayor. he pulled a pad out of his pocket and wrote it all down. he said that was an idea he could get behind.

    Excellent!

Not a bad Idea but it also sounds like it could easily be manipulated for the government to take away yet another freedom of peaceable assembly therefor I would not support this. Even though they hate, they still have that freedom. It is also the freedom for others to counter their protest which is what seemed to happen. I would just leave it there. We dont need to give the government more ideas of how to chip away at the Bill of Rights they are already doing a great job.

as far as i can tell, any "parade" or demonstration is assigned a minimum number of officers and city personnel according to its size. but if you want to do something that is going to cause a problem, then you start having to cough up the cash for more support personnel. if you are doing something that might entice a riot, you have to pay for your own protection.

political speech is protected, of course. but only within limits. just as you are not allowed to politically grandstand in court without paying the price, you are not allowed to politically grandstand on the courthouse steps. those placing themselves in danger must first acknowledge the risks. and then they must abide by the rules of the people who are there to protect them.
  • sanchosdad
also, try to find out how much a parade permit costs in NYC. they say it is free, but it can be tens of thousands of dollars by the time you actually get one for the same reason.

and if you wanted to have a racially charged/KKK/skinhead/white supremacist rally in NYC, they would just make you wait indefinitely while they reviewed it.

Oh wow.. How often do you get to see a couple of FBI agents dressed in bed sheets?

KKK are Satan-worshipping violent molesters with an ancient tradition. But it's not like any other skin colors haven't gotten a piece of that action themselves. Down with hoodism. Whose "hood" is this anyways? These crackers are definitely "from the hood." It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.
  • thats the truth it comes in all color and they act like wolves in the forrest and the hood at that when are we going to grow up we only have one earth and thats it

Christopher Kernich a white student at Kent State has died from a beating by blacks. Attorney General Eric Holder by saying whites were not covered by the Obama Holder hate crimes act called forth that type of hate attack on whites. General Holder is responsible for it. He has command influence over young black males.
  • smallbear
Right, OA, just like you have command influence over termites.
  • OldAtlantic
Command influence is the impact of a superior. Attorney General Holder is the head black prosecutor and law enforcement official. When he says no black killing a white is ever hate, he is telling blacks to kill whites.
  • aerows
You are thinking of Command Responsibility. It applies to war crimes. As a supporter of President Bush, and an avid fan of torture, OA, you shouldn't be discussing Command Responsibility.

AG Holder never said "no black killing a white is ever hate". You are the only person that has said that. You are saying it with the agenda of making racism sound more reasonable. I'm white. It still isn't reasonable.
  • Pickerl
Too bad these type of a&$holes are allowed to even get together, then on the other hand they will soon be tried in the ICC. I don't know which is better the fact that thy get to assemble or the fact that we will soon be subject to international courts?
  • Pickerl
It also seems that the more mean and hate filled a group is the more attention they receive and the more protection they get due to the insane PC in this country.
  • aerows
I find them offensive, but by protecting their rights, we protect our own. There is nothing insane about protect our rights.

The "we are too PC" argument is usually advanced by people that are bigots, know that bigotry is wrong, but want bigotry to come back into vogue. Our nation is called the melting pot for a reason. Bigotry isn't going to come back into fashion any time soon, so either change your attitudes towards PC or prepare to be scorned for being a bigot.
