dedescozzafava Update: NY GOP candidate throws support to DemocratUPDATE: As Raw Story reported earlier Sunday, the moderate Republican candidate running for the US House in New York's 23rd congressional district has thrown her support to the Democratic candidate after dropping out of the race.

Dede Scozzafava, whose campaign was upended when fellow Republicans Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and others openly supported a more conservative third-party candidate, has officially backed her erstwhile Democratic rival, Bill Owens.

The move is certain to pour more fuel on a political fire that ABC's George Stephanopoulos described on Sunday as "a bit of a Republican civil war."

The Watertown Daily Times in upstate New York reports that Scozzafava released the following statement:

You know me, and throughout my career, I have been always been an independent voice for the people I represent. I have stood for our honest principles, and a truthful discussion of the issues, even when it cost me personally and politically. Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; it's about the people of this District.

It is in this spirit that I am writing to let you know I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same.

Moderate Republican throwing weight behind Democratic candidate: Report

The resignation of a moderate Republican in favor of a more conservative third-party candidate in an upstate New York special election shows that the Republican Party is becoming "more and more extreme and more marginalized," says a senior White House adviser.

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser and assistant to President Barack Obama, told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Sunday that the disappearance of the moderate Republican candidate from the US House election in New York's 23rd congressional district says a lot about the current state of the Republican Party.

"It's rather telling when the Republican Party forces out a moderate Republican, and I think it says a great deal about where the Republican leadership is right now."

Jarrett added, "I think [the GOP is] becoming more and more extreme and more and more marginalized. Look at the number of people who actually say that they're registered [who] consider themselves a Republican."

Dede Scozzafava, a moderate Republican, announced her plans to withdraw from the upstate New York race on Saturday, after recent polls showed her trailing far behind Democratic candidate Bill Owens and Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.

Hoffman is now behind Democrat Owens by one percentage point, 36 percent to 35 percent; Scozzafava was trailing at 20 percent. Hoffman's campaign got a big boost when Sarah Palin endorsed his socially conservative ticket, causing a flurry of defections from the Scozzafava camp to Hoffman.

On ABC's This Week Sunday, host George Stephanopoulos noted that the fight between Scozzafava and Hoffman amounted to "a bit of a Republican civil war," and suggested that Democrats hoped the moderate Scozzafava would throw her weight behind Owens, the Democratic candidate.

And an article in Sunday's Watertown Daily Times suggests Scozzafava may be doing just that. The paper reports that, on Saturday, Scozzafava "began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens."

The Daily Times had endorsed Scozzafava; it is now throwing its weight behind Owens.

However, observers say that Hoffman is now the favorite to win the election this week, as the right-of-center vote had been split between two candidates, and much of it is expected to solidify behind Hoffman, the one conservative left running.

The republicans are in shambles. They have alienated most Americans. Their tent is so small, it probably should be called a large teepee. Their leaders are Limbaugh and Faux news. What a party.
  • lorn
yeah what a party. Too bad the Democrats are just as eager to wage war, lie about it, commit torture and lie about it, bail out big corporations and screw us out of health care........just like the dirty Republicans did. They are the same.

However this petty squabble will serve the purpose of making a very nice diversion from the big huge important vote in Congress on Tuesday this coming week. What, you haven't heard about it?

Tuesday the Republicans and Democrats will hold hands and vote together, vote as one strong united front to reject and ignore the valuable UN report on war crimes in Gaza. This will prove to Americans once a gain that these two vile parties both support war crimes and lies that cover them up. But of course there will be no reporting, no news and no coverage of this vote. And if it is mention for five minutes on a site like this, it will be closed to comments. The story covered in the link will be ignored so that corrupt American media can focus on petty scandals like this Republican endorsement crap. Palin will of course be featured too.
    Democracy is dead.

    Hello?????
They all work for the same people!
Obama runs nothing neither did Bush or Clinton.
THEY do what they are told to do.
There is very little hope for us, because people still believe in the left right scam.
There are no Republican or Democrat's...they are professional scam artists put in office to sell it to the public. Their job is to confuse the dumb public who can't form two sentences together, let alone accept the truth of what is happening to them.
The New world order will emerge and it doesn't matter who is in office. God help us as REVELATION is being played out before our eyes.

A Fox Noise talking head said that "Rightwing Extremists are no worse than Leftwing Extremists in this country..." If that's true, how do you explain the 400% increase in death threats to President Obama compared to Bush??

They don't even try to hide their racism any more. They're becoming more vocal, more violent, and more scary as each day passes. It's amazing that this fringe group can garner such power. They're more like gangsters than American citizens. I'm proud that the majority of Americans aren't like these people. We don't need to return to the 1950s.

HELLOW! The GOP has long since crossed the line on being extreme! They are now presenting themselves for what and who they really are, were and have been...

"Hoffman's campaign got a big boost when Sarah Palin endorsed his socially conservative ticket, causing a flurry of defections from the Scozzafava camp to Hoffman."

A sarah palin endorsed candidate and that gives hoffman the lead? Wow. The capacity for such ignorance and stupidity in our country truly boggles the mind. Even moderate republicans are increasingly finding it difficult to identify with their own party--it's been taken over by a bunch of unAmerican religious extremists intent on forcing their personal beliefs on everyone else to the exclusion of all others--even to the point of using violence (domestic terrorism) and the gag squad--the plains, limpballs, o'lielys and bleaacks--are encouraging them. So, it should come as no surprise that as a result, the party of no is well on its way to becoming the party of none.

Also, I think it's becoming increasingly obvious that we need a strong progressive third party in this country. In fact, I bet having three or more political parties would make corrupting the system far more difficult. As it stands now, our two-party system has been thoroughly corrupted as both sides, to one extent or another, have sold out the American people in favor of the corporate beast. They have betrayed our trust for their own personal gain and, with very few exceptions, should all be fired.
  • kiboshki
We can only hope for a strong Progressive party!

There also needs to be a divisive, regressive Patriot Party (remember patriotic is just a nice word for "nationalist"). Just to keep the other end of the political spectrum split up :)
  • lewscannon
I think "patriot" would be a misnomer. What they should be are the Theocrats............
  • DownriverDem
A rightie told me that they wanted to make a point that they will not accept RINOs.

Well I hope this means that their party is shrinking!
  • kiboshki
We can hope their party is shrinking. But I fear their voice is growing.

Because of these fake-conservative zealots' characteristic ignorance, intimidation and hate, moderates will continue to be marginalized. In the short term, at least, that will mean even more rabid lunatics at the helm. Aye, aye, sir, Full steam ahead, straight into that iceberg, Cap'n Palin!

Unfortunately, they'll take all the rest of us down with them.
  • socialismorbust
Face it: The Republican party as with blue dogs are NEO-FASCIST in their politics and actions. They have mutated into a hate-mongering, war-mongering collection of bile. There are current;y MANY Damnocrats who also fit EASILY into the mold. If a damnocrat favors party or corporations over the well-being of "We the People", you may as well call them NEO-FASCISTS also instead of Repug lite.

    DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM NOW!!!
  • Independentgal
Some of these blue dogs should be called "DEMONCRATS," and they truly belong with the "demonic" party of all time, The "Repugnicants."

Let's hope Scozzofava's bravery will inspire Levi Johnston to dish the rest of the dirt he has on bailin Palin.

  • i don't believe palin's endorsement of cat food would have any effect except a drop in marketshare ... are americans going to embrace this insipid egomaniac because she is an underdog who has been ridiculed into "going rogue"? <www.goingrouge.net>

I was more excited about what will happen in Seattle after the elections until I read this post. I don't live anywhere near NY's 23rd, but there are some really interesting dynamics at work in that race that haven't been seen on that scale in a while.

Can it be Tuesday night or Wednesday morning yet?

It is right to hope that their vicious purification of moderates from the repub party will shrink them to the margin. What frightens me is that sometimes these "waves" of madness will garner more strength from the less than informed masses who just want to crow about being with the "winners". Another example of how the haley barbers and karl roves can get Americans to vote against their own self interest AND feel good about it!
