Al Gore: ‘I’m gonna start acting crazy’

Al Gore details the ways that we can address climate change in his new book Our Choice. But on Saturday Night Live he said he has a new backup plan.

"I'm gonna start acting crazy. I think it's crazy that our politicians aren't more worried about the climate crisis," he told host Seth Meyers. "So it's time for us to out-crazy the crazies."

One of his ideas for mildly amusing stunts involved dumping ice water on members of Congress with a note saying, "We're melting, love the glaciers."

His other idea was reminiscent of many environmentalist demonstrations, with a silly twist. "I'm gonna start planting trees in politicians' front yards... in the middle of the night... and tape toy guns to the branches pointed to the door," he warned. "So when they wake up and walk out of their houses in the morning, they'll think it's the forests coming to get their revenge."

He eventually admitted his pranks were outlandish and hit on four key points.

Story continues below...

"We need to cut back on the burning of coal and oil and start using renewable energy. We need to stop deforestation and plant billions of trees. We have to become more efficient and stop wasting so much energy. We need to stop factory farming and start using sustainable agriculture."

He insisted, however, that if we don't stop the climate crisis, "Instead of science, I'm going with crazy."

This video is from NBC's Saturday Night Live, broadcast Nov. 21, 2009.

Gore is completely right - we need to start acting "crazy" - if by crazy, you mean being concerned about the impact we are having on the planet. It's simple - this is self-preservation. The willful ignorance in this country makes me want to scream!

I think there's a thinly veiled threat here, or there should be. Nothing is more urgent than the climate crisis, and people who don't get it should at the least be rounded up. They've had thirty years. If they don't see it yet they're anti-human, anti-planet, anti-God if you want to put it that way, and certainly anti-American. More to the point, as a planet we are faced with the most difficult task that's ever confronted us, and we can afford no more idiotic pseudo-debate. The PR firms that produce commercials questioning the validity of climate change should be put out of business -- I'd say put to the torch, but the world can't absorb the carbon.

I'm all for free speech, but that's not speech, it's money. Vile, corrupt, mind-rotting money.

People who buy into that nonsense after the preponderance of evidence is in and growing exponentially daily should be allowed no role in society whatsoever. Certainly they should be stripped of all their material resources and that wealth dedicated to fixing the problem.

It's most probably already too late, but we do have to try, and those who have stood in the way of the solution and continue to stand in the way certainly deserve no sympathy at this point.

For those who don't get it, we are looking at 6 degrees celsius warming. That's enough to trigger even more massive changes and turn the whole world into a near lifeless desert, as it was 250 million years ago the last time the ocean methane hydrate melt was triggered. It's a level of destruction otherwise unparalleled since the beginning of complex life on Earth in the Cambrian. There are no terms from our history that come close to describing it. Even the Bible fails. And yet people sickeningly, blindly, try to pretend it's not happening and try to convince others to continue to cause this super-apocalypse.

yeah, a little crazy is in order at this point. Burnam Wood (c.f. Shakespeare's MacBeth, Gore's subtle reference) at every denier's doorstep.

It's called polar shift. We're overdue one for 600,000 years or so now. They don't tell you that the sun is burning hotter and the entire solar system is heating up. We don't know because we don't live there. I do have an idea though. By the looks of your nazi climate change tone...you should do us a favor and turn over all your assets to AG. He will gladly take them. Perhaps you'll get a few "carbon credits" in return for your good deeds. You know they don't go unrewarded, right? The earth is doing what it is supposed to do. You're right in one aspect. There's nothing we can do about it...except adapt. These people are making money off of nature now! 6 degrees celsius is a bit overdone, man. It's shown that if anything it's less than 1 degree over the past 40 years. They say now we're headed for a cool down period. Wouldn't that be just crazy is hell if all this turned out to be a big money making hoax? Wow! Glad I didn't turn over all my stuff so I'd feel better about being brainwashed. :)

1 degree so far. 6 degrees by 2100. read the news, and come back when you're done.

funny kind of cool down when the polar ice cap melt anomaly just spent two weeks in record territory.

Look, you're behaving unethically. I know as soon as you can no longer deny it you'll act like you never did so there's no point even arguing with you. So many people are like that, and they always will be, assuming we survive.

What else do you think is a hoax, just out of curiosity? The round Earth? Evolution? The moon landing?

My position is it is no longer useful to debate the likes of you, if it ever was. We have to save the planet despite you, and if you are in the way, we have to find quick ways of getting you out of the way. Not because we hate you or think you are weakening the race or anything like that. Simply because we can't afford to let you stop us. Bless you if you just get out of the way, or pitch in to help, but the point is, with your profound pathological denial and ignorance, we can't expect that and have to plan for smashing through your self-destructive resistance, by any means necessary as the saying goes. Liberals (FDR was liberal, duh, and even Eisenhower was liberal by your standards) saved the world from Fascism (you brought it up) -- we can save the world from your sorry ilk too. It's do or die. The less death the better, but we must DO.

Just so you know where you stand.

Still looks like you double digit claim isn't what it's cracked up to be. I think you're the only crackpot here. All the rest of us see what your kind are doing. You're single-handedly making the rest of the population on earth more stupid than it already is. Do what you think you must. Remember though, little ignorant grasshopper, there are more of our kind than your liberal, tree-hugging, goat-loving asses. Have a nice day. Oh and guess what? FDR and Eisen were both worthless to this country as they only served the interests of the elite. Fascism, I don't care for either. What I don't care for is somebody like your making up shit and trying to impress it upon me when I understand it to be total bullshit. Make your death threats, my man. It might very well land you in court in real life if you don't watch your mouth.

    Mindless idiot blather.

    .
I saw no "death threat", just the assertion that we need to "get you out of the way"..like a broken down useless car, just slide it to the side of the road and move past it.

but you clearly don't have a good grasp of reality, so I can see how you took it as a threat.

"They say now we're headed for a cool down period."

The only "they" saying that are the deniers. Science and fact and trending and statistics say no such thing.

and your "must give up everything" schpeal shows your limited capacity for critical thought. We don't have to "give up" anything, we need to find new ways to power our lives. You keep your AC, you just don't shit in your nest to have it (which is what you do today).

The more posts from you deniers I see, the more I understand that this is quite simply a matter of being able to effectively think and reason. You can't, so you lash out. Poor thing.. like the cavemen lashing out at the dark because they didn't know shadows can't actually touch you, so when they move you can just ignore them.... like we'll do with you.

I see your tough tone has lightened up. You can't go around threatening people like that, pal. As for you? You're a little piss-ant liberal that doesn't know better than what you're told from an extreme left professor who gets paid to endorse a "global" product. Do yourself a favor. If you've graduated by now, go turn that piece of paper back in. It's doing you no good. If you have not graduated, then just quit. You are wasting your mother and father's money. Such analogies you write. You must have read them in today's study them for vocabulary. Either way...you lose, piss-ant.

So how's that new info going? I'm just curious as to how you're handling it. I'm sure you'll take the Gore stance with...they're old letters. It's ok. :)
  • willytee
    try rounding me up
  • ericthefool
When you make this argument about "Climate Crisis", you mask the real problem.

Seems to me that Gore's 4 points are about pollution and disregard of our ecosystem. When you make the argument about the icecaps melting, you ignore the real problem at hand. It's very simple.
  • marthamitchell2
The question is: How much money is Al Gore making from the global warming crisis? NONE? Is his hard work charitable since he's already a multimillionaire? Just curious. (And if he's making a fortune from it, that's crazy?)
  • CanyonWren09
You're an idiot. Have you read the report from the world's consortium of scientists, the IPCC? If not, please educate yourself before again sounding like an ignoramus.
  • chop98
His net worth went from just over 2 million dollars to more than 100 million. That right there tells you why he's in this game. The man could give two hoots less about this earth. His elite butt just wants a big piece of the carbon credit game.
  • marthamitchell2
Thanks Chop for answering an "idiot's" question. hehe!!!
  • smallbear
Why is that even an issue? Why does it matter how much money Al Gore is making, when the real and bigger issue is atmospheric deterioration? Why do you idiots waste our time with red herrings like this? The atmosphere is deteriorating. Rapidly. Pay attention. It might cost you your life. And then no one will make any money.
  • mac2131
al gore us a hypocrit. if he was really into saving the environment his book would be free online.
plain and simple. anything else is for profit.
  • smallbear
Selling his book provides the revenue necessary to keep his crusade moving forward. It's as simple as that. It's not about profit, or high living, it's about getting the word out, and, like any campaign, that costs money. You think publishers print books for free?
Nobody gives him free air time, it costs money to get the word out. Think a little before you spout off.
