marymatalin Ex Bush aide: No crying in politics, even if men slap womenIn a recent editorial defending former lawmaker Sarah Palin, ex-Bush aide and longtime Republican strategist Mary Matalin suggested that in campaign politics, women cannot get offended, even if they are physically assaulted by a male colleague.

"Time is the most valuable commodity on a campaign and you just can't waste it thinking about how to choose your words carefully or get your job done more diplomatically," she wrote in a CNN opinion piece. "If someone isn't in tears every day, that day wasn't all it could be advancing the campaign. I once witnessed an experienced (big) man slap a professional female colleague across the face over an ad buy... and no one thought anything of it, starting with the woman. In fact, she would have been insulted if anyone told her she should have been insulted."

Matalin, who edits Simon & Schuster's conservative imprint Threshold Editions, had suggested that Palin's book was unfortunately diminished "to a pinprick-sized, petty insiders squabble" between the former governor and Sen. John McCain's campaign staff.

In spite of the numerous erroneous and misleading claims carried in Palin's ghostwritten text, Matalin defended it and cautioned political "big book" writers that it has become the new standard by which their texts will be measured.

"Though all the breathless chatter about 2012 is premature, the way Palin lays out her world view throughout the book and especially in the eloquent closing pages is sure to attract conservatives yearning for an unapologetic articulation of first principles," she added. "But because of the inordinate mainstream media focus on the political insiders' tiff, the Political Palin is getting sucked down and mucked up by the Published Palin."

"Matalin should be ashamed of herself, her politics, and her 'professionalism' on a daily basis," Crooks and Liars blogger bluegal snarled "That she actually points to an instance of physical assault of a female employee by a male superior as 'the way it is in a campaign--get over it' just puts everything that's wrong with her argument in high relief. Does anyone wonder what would happen if that kind of thing happened in the private sector, or the outrage if a former corporate employee reported such physical assault as 'acceptable in the business we're in' hearsay on the pages of CNN's website?"

Palin has said she would like to play a role in the 2012 presidential election, "if the people will have me."

Matalin is married to longtime Democratic strategist James Carville.

Hey, what's the problem...if the employee makes another mistake just lop off one of her fingers. she'll tough it out. ...sick people. and Mary would want her daughter treated this way?

While I'm not surprised to hear of this Neanderthal-level dysfunction in the Rethugs, I'm surprised that Matalin would openly endorse it- and even more that CNN would publish it.

    Total pieces of shit.

    Well, there's your explanation for Mary's face . . .

    .
Par for the course. This is exactly what's to be expected from backwards, dog-eat-dog pseudo-conservative zealots like the radical right wing of the GOP. And the Taliban.

is she serious? then it's time for carville to start giving her a taste of the back of his hand, right?

    .
    She probably likes it rough.

(Ugh, sorry. *shudder* I'll never be able to unthink that.)

    this is completely fucked.

slapping a woman is not by any stretch of any imagination a 'family value' nor is it conservative or christian.

the world is spinning out of control....
  • jeffersonperrin
Oh, well, Mary's comments certainly go a very long way as explanation of why she is a Republican, Neo conservative Independent; she's a ditz, one of those women who likes a little slapping around once in a while and this may be why she married a polar opposite. She was hoping their arguments might lead to his taking control. If she argues each and every issue from the stand point of a Limbaugh or O'Reilly or Beck, I have no doubt she can get herself slapped even by a nice guy like James. Until then, she is probably getting '(h)it' on the side from her political bosses.

W.T.F.?! I'm beginning to think that sanity is evolving out of the "human condition"!

A presidential political campaign is the private sector.

I always liked James Carville but I have to admit - when he married this woman, it made absolutely no sense to me and frankly, he dropped quite a few notches in my opinion.

As much of my family are southern Republicans, I tried to understand this as the abiity to love someone even if the have different views. But family is family - you don't get to choose them. But you do get to choose your spouse and partner and for him to live with this loud mouthed, disrespectful Bush apologist is too much. It makes one thinks his arguments are just for show and personal advancement rather that true held beliefs...

And from her side, I suppose the same could be said of her for marrying him. Sleeping with the enemy on both sides.... Shallow people, both

On the other hand I do think she could use a good slap now and then.. LOL

and Carville should apologize to Gov Richardson for saying he was a Judas because he backed Obama
  • dennycrane
I wish Carville would slap his "husband."
  • philbrittain
What a douchebag! She and Carville are right for each other.
  • pakaal
The really sad part is she sounds like someone whose experienced an assault herself.

Whether or not that's true, I gotta say, Matalin and I think very differently. The one time I saw a guy slap a woman, I stopped him. I mean seriously, hitting people is just not acceptable behavior, particularly not in an office situation (except for ad agencies, apparently).

Yeah, Matalin's being ridiculous, and she's being an enabler. Creepy.

    Crying? that's a non-issue!

There ought to be a law: NO LYING IN POLITICS.
LIES should be FORBIDDEN and punished by jail time.

Political LYING to the public should be a FEDERAL OFFENSE.
  • Bill J
There is no excuse for anyone to slap anyone, regardless of gender. Violence is only justified if it is used protecting someone. What is she thinking?
  • jeffersonperrin
Normally one response to such an unsettling article is enough for me. Kinda gets me a bit more calm so I can function the rest of the day without being so outraged at the brainless, amoral 20-25% inhumans surrounding the rest of us. But this...when I think of the women I've known-and even a few men-who have been slapped around by the kind of people Ms Maitlin obviously admires and of the thousands more who will continue to get slapped around because this dumb Bitch just broadcast a thumbs up to the act, enrages me even more... I, who could never hurt anyone or anything that has not hurt me or other innocents, don't even want to FEEL such anger towards another human being. But, now, when I think of Ms Bitch...I want to do a little slapping myself.
  • One wonders if her husband knocks her around, that she would tolerate this?

Unless women rebel against this abuse and prosecute it, abuse will continue. The same goes for the Bush-Cheney Torture Conspirators. Fail to prosecute them and you will see much more of Torture.

No crying in politics...? How about Boehner the bawl baby...? Or whimpering, sniffing Cantor...? Or the Appalachian trail hiker, Gov. Sanford...perfectly acceptable if you are Republican, to perform and show "real" emotion if you have a camera and audience to play to...isn't that right...Mr. Beck?
