cheney20081222x Draft Cheney group wants Dick back in the White HouseCheney: 'Not a chance' I'll run for president

Dick Cheney in 2012? One new political group, led by a prominent former Log Cabin Republican, thinks it could -- and should -- happen.

Despite the former vice-president's low approval ratings among the American public, the organizers of Draft Cheney 2012 believe he's the right man to take on President Barack Obama in the next election -- and, they say, he may be the only person left in the Republican Party who has what it takes to run the country.

"The 2012 race for the Republican nomination for President will be about much more then who will be the party's standard bearer against Barack Obama, the race is about the heart and soul of the GOP," CNN quoted Christopher Barron, the principal organizer of the Draft Cheney movement. "There is only one person in our party with the experience, political courage and unwavering commitment to the values that made our party strong – and that person is Dick Cheney."

The group has launched a Web site and a Facebook group (87 members so far), and plans to rally supporters to their cause at Tea Party events and in early primary states like New Hampshire and Iowa, CNN reports.

But does the group stand a chance of garnering support from grassroots Republicans cheering for a Sarah Palin ticket or even a run by Lou Dobbs? The Chicago Tribune's Swamp Politics blog reports, "There would seem to be support in some quarters for a Cheney bid, notes Barron, quoting Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard as saying: 'Of course, everyone's first choice for president in 2012 is Dick Cheney.''"

Yet the effort to put Dick Cheney back in the White House could face one major obstacle: Dick Cheney himself.

As CNN notes, earlier this month at a campaign event for Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, the Texas Republican running to replace Gov. Rick Perry, Cheney responded to calls for him to run for president with three simple words: "Not a chance."

Barron, who appears to be the group's founder as its Web site is registered in his name, is known for his unwavering loyalty to core Republican values. A lawyer and campaign consultant, he was political director of the Log Cabin Republicans, a group for gay conservatives, before he and some other LCR members decided the group wasn't conservative enough and launched their own, more conservative group, GOProud.

Barron also runs CapSouth, a political consultancy that lists among its members PhRMA, the pharmaceutical industry's lobby group.

Last June, Barron penned a column for the Huffington Post in which he advocated in favor of expanding concealed-carry permits because, he suggested, carrying guns is an effective way for homosexuals to prevent attacks against them.

"If Congress is actually interested in preventing violent hate crimes, they should pass legislation that will empower individuals to defend themselves before they become another hate crime victim," he wrote.

Barron's column was criticized by some for its poor timing -- it was published the day white supremacist James von Brunn allegedly killed a security guard with a concealed weapon at Washington's Holocaust Museum.

How 'bout a "Draft Cheney" movement to get 'five deferment' Dick to serve at the front lines in Afghanistan.

Now that's change I could believe in.
  • Pickerl
That sounds like a plan. Bush and Cheney can join under the army buddie program. The only draw back would be for Cheney because he would have to enlist under Bushs ASVAB score too, regrdless of what he scored. Two brand new pairs of boots on the ground for Obama
  • Pickerl
Oops, I met Buddy, not buddie. I uess they would join under my scores based on that post.
  • SouthernYankee
I wouldn't be surprised he isn't running a shaddow government now.

What the draft Dick Cheney website fails to point out Dick the Stand Down Cheney is current member was the former director of the Rockefeller Foundation's "Council on Foreign Relations" that is most anti American organization and an enemy of the Republic. Also he was the Commander of NORAD during the 911 attacks and resigned 3 months after the "Pearl Harbor Event".
    He is a war criminal!

I have the slogan for the draft Cheney movement:

Draft the Dick who ducked the draft!
  • jimbeaux
They can bring back the slogan from the ' 68 Nixon Campaign "America Needs a New Dick".

OMG, what a nightmare it would have been if Cheney had taken over for W Bush, just imagine......

He probably would have stayed the course in Iraq, the war loving bastard!
He might have even had the balls and cruel streak required to increase aerial attacks in Afghanistan causing huge increases in civilian deaths.
He probably would have attempted to start a new war in Pakistan with drone attacks, and would have caused a massive refugee crisis instead.
He is so evil and crazy he probably would have announced several insane troop increases in Afghanistan by now.
He undoubtedly would have done all sorts of dirty sneaky tricks to protect Bush from torture investigation and prosecution.
He surely would have kept the cone of silence and lies up over 911.

That evil scum bag wouldn't have stopped there with all the war increases. He probably would have continued the corporate bailouts which began last year with banks.
No doubt he would have taken the success of that trillion dollar theft and attempted to repeat it, several times.

But the good news is, our vigilant corporate media would have never let Darth Cheney get away with all of the above, no way. The people never would have stood for it either.

Aren't you all happy that we have the kind, wise, gentle, honest man of peace Barack Obama in the White House instead........?

Wait a minute? Maybe the whole point is that Cheney never could have pulled off stunts like that................naaaw!
That's crazy talk, pass the kool aid please........no not that whimpy liquid kool aid, the crystals man, just give me the crystals. Snort the kool aid crystals and curse Cheney, life is so good with our new messiah, all hail the messiah!

You moron. All that corporate bailout you're complaining about is just our president bailing us out from eight years of Republican mismanagement.

Nobody thinks Obama is a Messiah. But he is a smart fellow, and a person I am proud to call my president. Cheney and his know-nothing sidekick Bush ran this country into the ditch, and all you can do is throw mud while President Obama does his best to clean up the myriad unpaid-for disasters they left him.

You are part of the twenty-five percent of Americans that would still root for Bush and Cheney no matter what happened. Fine. I hope Cheney does run for president. Cheney, Palin, Beck. You got some real winners there, pal.
  • lorn
Yo quincy, a little hint on commenting without looking like a fool.

Do not respond to a comment that oozes liberalism, anti war sentiment and a disdain for right wing politics, with a childish name calling rant accusing that person of liking Palin, Cheney and Republicans. It might make people think you have comprehension issues.

This country begins to heal, AFTER people figure out the true nature of our government and who wields the power in America.
  • quincyscott
I'm no fool, brother. Plenty of Americans see reality differently than you
do. We still love America, we just don't see the world the same way you do.
If my words offended you, I apologize. I make no apologies for my beliefs.

I think you're Kool-Aid talk is spot on.

I've often wondered why cheney was picked as Bush's VP & yours is the best explanation so far.
  • Nick
    Fair enough.
  • Pickerl
You are very savvy. Your comments ring true, so true.
  • jamal49
My favorite from the '68 Nixon Campaign was "Dick Nixon before he dicks you!"
  • jamal49
My favorite comment from the '68 Nixon Campaign was "Dick Nixon before he dicks you!" I think the same could be said about Dick (The Prick) Cheney.
  • justintime
    Go f##k yourself, Mr. Cheney.
  • justontime
Justintime has a filthy mouth. He doesn't talk this way over at God's Politics. I wonder why. Perhaps people would realize the nastiness to which he's capable of descending and stop listening to him. He might even be banned for his immature behavior. He probably doesn't have the man parts to do it.
  • justintime
I'm quoting a Katrina survivor who was confronting Dick Cheney's indifference to the human cost of the Bush administration response to the disaster on the Gulf Coast.
This Katrina survivor was in turn only quoting Dick Cheney himself who told Senator Patrick Leahy to "Go f##k yourself", on the Senate floor, no less.
All this proves is that Cheney has a filthy mouth.
And you've just proven yourself an ignorant fool.
