Canada ignored Afghan torture allegations: diplomatOTTAWA — Canadian troops handed Afghan detainees to local authorities in the knowledge they would be tortured, and later tried to silence critics of the practice, a senior Ottawa diplomat told lawmakers.

"According to our information, the likelihood is that all the Afghans we handed over were tortured," Richard Colvin, former number two at the Canadian embassy in Kabul told a parliamentary committee probing allegations of torture.

He said most of the detainees were not "high-level targets" or even Taliban, but wrongly-detained peasants and farmers.

"In other words, we detained, and handed over for severe torture, a lot of innocent people," he testified.

Colvin also claimed his warnings, first delivered in spring 2006, were ignored by senior military commanders and government officials until prisoner mistreatment allegations were reported in the media a year later.

After that, he said, diplomats were instructed by top members of the foreign affairs department not to keep written records of discussions of torture allegations.

Colvin worked for Canada's Foreign Affairs department in Kandahar in 2006 and was later promoted to second-in-command at the Canadian embassy in Kabul until late 2007.

In both jobs, he visited detainees transferred by Canadian soldiers to Afghan prisons and reported his findings to Ottawa.

The Canadian government, which has thousands of troops in Afghanistan, has denied there is any firm evidence that detainees transferred by its officials were indeed tortured.

Now I know why the cagged bird sings,
The memory of cagging Canadians was burned into my memory banks,,,

The worst part of their agony was the absence of hockey,
I'd been forewarned by the Pleidians about Gretsky being traded,,,
But no one believed me until it was too late

I was even there when they tried to convince GWB to invade Canada,
They used my stem cells to inject into his consciousness,,,
He thought it was just his regular acupuncture treatments for alcoholism,
But my screaming corpuscles knew better

The only thing that saved him (and all of Canada)
was Laura's frantic screams about the dog shit on the carpet in the Oval Office,
Oh the horror ,,, the horror ,,,

Why constantly blather about torture when you never ever mention the daily murder? Never a word about orphaned children of the victims of U.S. troops being bought and sold like cattle either. Just tow whatever line of shit that happens to be spewed from Rachel Maddow's ass I guess.

Obama's going to cause the murder of thousands of more innocents, and by the time it's all over Raw will be trying to relate torture to Carrie Prejan.

Ha! LMAO. "relate torture to Carrie Prejan". Simply Priceless.

    Bravo.

Yes a million dead Iraqis (mostly women and children) with plenty more on the way, both there and in Afghanistan, and all we hear about is a few hundred deaths from a few thousand tortures.

I'm sure RS means well, but they too are a victim of the bottom line and push all the same buttons over and over -- especially since all the same hot button issues keep coming up. i.e., The more secretive the truth the slower it outs. (Look how long it took for Gulf of Tonkin to out). So yes, the drip, drip, drip, of sensationalist "journalism" can get pretty old at times. I hear ya.

Now I know why a Canadian was put in my life,,
Yes they scarred this Canadian lady to my memory..

The scar was so they could have Canada..
But apparently it didn't matter that she told me, about 1 year after 9/11,,,
That allot of Canadians thought 9/11 was an inside job...

But there's the possibility they wanted these words said,,I believe it was around the time American's were pushing for an investigation into 9/11...
Then came the politician's and there 9/11 fairytale report..
With time passing by and the 9/11 commission admitting there report was a fairytale...

But who takes issue with torture? America loves the practice. We condone it. And reward those that take part in it. It apparently is not illegal. Just ask the president.
