tonyblair062807 Blair knew Iraq had no WMD before war, inquiry hearsUK considered Iran, Libya, North Korea bigger threats than Iraq

British Prime Minister Tony Blair was told ten days before the invasion of Iraq that Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction programs likely remained "dismantled," but the prime minister continued to insist that Iraq was producing chemical and biological weapons, a British inquiry heard Wednesday.

"With British and US troops massed on the border, the new intelligence was dismissed," reports the Times of London.

Sir William Ehrman, the director of international security at the UK's Foreign Office from 2000 to 2002, told the British government's inquiry into the Iraq invasion that "on March 10 we got a report saying that the chemical weapons might have remained disassembled and that Saddam hadn’t yet ordered their re-assembly and he might lack warheads capable of effective dispersal of agents."

The US and Britain led the Iraq invasion on March 20, 2003, ten days after that report. As the Guardian notes, "in the government's dossier on Iraqi weapons, published that month, Blair wrote that he believed intelligence assessments had established "beyond doubt" that Saddam was continuing to produce chemical and biological weapons – an assertion repeated up to the invasion."

The revelations will likely cast more dark clouds on the historical legacy of Tony Blair, who was credited with revitalizing Britain's sagging leftist Labour Party after two decades of electoral losses to the Conservatives, but whose reputation has been scarred by lingering questions about his undying support for the Bush administration's push for an invasion of Iraq.

Among the things the Chilcot Inquiry, as it is known, is to determine is whether Blair misled the British public in the run-up to the war. Yesterday's testimony from Sir William increases the chances that the answer to that question will be yes.

BIGGER FISH TO FRY?

The inquiry was also told that the UK's Foreign Office didn't consider Saddam Hussein's Iraq to be the biggest threat to global security.

"The inquiry was told that Iraq was ranked by the Foreign Office as only the fourth most dangerous of rogue states trying to develop weapons of mass destruction in 2001," reports the UK's Daily Telegraph. "Iran, North Korea and Libya were of greater concern to officials, who were confident that weapons inspections during the 1990s had dismantled Iraq’s nuclear capability."

According to the Times, the inquiry also heard that UN weapons inspector Hans Blix told the British government in February, 2003, that "Saddam might not have weapons of mass destruction. Mr Blair continued to say there was a risk to national security from WMD without mentioning the new intelligence."

Blair is scheduled to testify before the inquiry next year.

How fucking horrible. I am sorry that I ever enlisted in the fucking army. I went to Iraq twice with a MEDEVAC as a crew-chief. I would really like to see the arrest of the whole group of War Pigs, the rotten, lying bastards. I am truly saddened by the realization that so many people have died, on both sides.

And think of the innocent civilians -the babies and children who died in agony and turmoil, or watched thier parents and siblings die, their bodies and bones easily torn apart by machines built to kill trained soldiers protected by armor plate and Kevlar suits.

One civilian is worth ten soldiers -thats how it should be -not the other way around.

Bush and Blair will burn in Hell for what they did to those people.

Bush & Cheney should be charged with treason for lying to the American people and Congress - Costing us thousands of lives of US servicemen and women, costing us 1 trillion dollars (this will take 80 years to repay), and costing us disdain from most countries around the world, and all of our allies except for England. The only benefit overthrowing Saddam Hussein has brought, is uniting the Shiites of Iraq with the Shiites of Iran, and bringing a Shiites controlled government to rule Iraq. Iran is the only country that celebrates the regime change of Iraq. The women of Iraq have had their rights set back decades. Bush and Cheney lied dozens of times, there were no WMDs and no connection to 9/11, they should be criminally prosecuted for treason.

Bush, I hear the fat lady warming up for a solo. Might be a good idea for you to check your travel agency's itinerary on flights leaving for Paraguay.

Seems the Brits are giving Tony Blair much more scrutiny than our beloved Obama Administration is giving GW and Dick Cheney.

Fuck Obama. He's as bad as Bush.

I'm done with Obama. Really. I have completely given up hope for him. Another worthless turd just like the last one.

Any good investigator would have known that Saddam did not have the capability of producing chemical or Bio-weapons. We, the USA, gave him all the chemical and biological weapons he ever had. This was during the Reagan and H.W. Bush Admin. Remember the pictures of Rumsfeld shaking Saddam's hand as he signed deals to supply the Iraqi regime with Sarin and Anthrax to fight the Iranians? That was it, folks. All that WMD was used on Iranians and Kurds. Over the years, the stockpiles were either destroyed by UN weapons inspectors or degraded to worthless by time and bad storage techniques.

By the 2003 invasion, any remaining gases or chemicals were useless, harmless. I can assure you everyone who had knowledge of the facts, knew Saddam was without these weapons, but Bush, Cheney, et al, relied on the collective stupidity of our citizenry and the complicity of the Big Corporate press and media to not inquire too deeply in a time of national patriotism whereby anyone challenging the White House was labeled anti-American or worse, French! Yet, we went to war based on lie after lie. Bush spends his time doing the bullshit "lecture" circuit to make a few hundred thousand dollars, chump change for the chump. Cheney is busy rewriting history with help from his daughter, Liz (ard). No one is prosecuted, no is is held responsible for the horror of the Iraq invasion and subsequent deaths of over 4500 US soldiers and over a Trillion Dollars in wasted US Taxpayer funds.

"By the 2003 invasion, any remaining gases or chemicals were useless, harmless."

I wouldn't call them harmless, but they had probably degraded to the point that they were no longer useful as weapons.

I really think people don't give a shit any more. (I do, but I'm not "people".)

I voted for Kucinich 'cause I wanted ACTUAL change, but that's not on the agenda of the DNC or any other Democrat leadership group.

I think the only way out of this mess is to completely avoid the DNC, et al.

We don't need a third party, we need about 20 parties and coalition governments.

It might not be as pretty to look at, but at least then we wouldn't only have the candidates of the elite to choose from.

By the way, the article ALSO means that Bush and Cheney knew this... which means someone should be drafting a lawsuit against them for murder and genocide.

    Someone in the states.

We have this law in New Zealand where all assets obtained during or through crime are seized by the government and added to the public coffers. As an example I think this should apply to all politicians caught lying and then benefiting from those lies .Strip Blair ,Bush ,Cheney and all the members of the USA Office of Special Plans of all their wealth.Set an example that other will think about before they lead our countries into illegal wars.
  • Turnip
The demand from the people for applying the rule of law in this instance has gone unanswered. The Social Compact between the two parties, the governors and the governed, is therefore broken.
  • The demand needs to increase, but in a wise and efficient way. The key ingredient is a large number of people that are well armed with facts about American (and British) history dealing with the utter contempt that the ruling class has for the truth and for the people, especially 3rd world people with resources.

Teaching our neighbors facts that clearly show this could eventually turn the tide. But disorganized and underleveraged fitful protest is ineffective unless vast in scope. It's like a slip of a girl pounding frenetically on the chest of a big man that is carrying her away laughing.

Everybody knew Iraq didn't have WMD's except the hillbilly teabaggers of course. The fact that Pelosi took impeachment of bush and cheney for war crimes off the table was the second discrace of the 21st century.
  • dotmafia
impeachment was off the table because the democrats and republicans are equally complicit and guilty for the many crimes committed.

if you can't see that truth, your eyes are wide shut.
  • captainvideo
It takes a 2/3 majority in the Senate to remove a sitting President. No single Republican Senator would have voted to remove Bush (or Cheney). Pelosi simply knew how to count votes and acted rationally, which is something that the people who criticise her are unable or unwilling to do.
