blackwatermassacreiraq Blackwater lawyers accuse Justice Dept. of disturbing misconductThe prosecution of five Blackwater employees over the notorious 2007 Nisoor Square massacre hit a snag Wednesday, when lawyers for one of the five accused federal prosecutors of "misconduct" in the case.

In a court filing Wednesday, lawyers for Nicholas Slatten, a Tennessee native who served two tours of duty in Iraq before joining Blackwater, alleged "a disturbing case of prosecutorial misconduct, undermining the integrity of the judicial process," the Associated Press reports.

The defense team said prosecutors had little evidence against Slatten and kept vital information from the grand jury that evaluated the basis for the criminal charges against him.

All five defendants had been charged with manslaughter. They had also been charged under an anti-machine-gun statute that would see them receive 30-year sentences under federal law.

The Justice Department last week asked the court to drop the charges against Slatten, but asked to reserve the right to file new charges against him at a later date. Slatten's lawyers argued Wednesday against that right, and also asked for a public hearing into the matter. The case has so far been heard behind closed doors, and the Justice Department's reasons for dropping the charges against Slatten have not been made public.

The defense allegations complicate a case that many human-rights activists have been watching closely. The September, 2007, massacre in Nisoor Square left 17 people dead and is widely considered to have been a turning point in the Iraq war, as public sentiment in the US and Iraq began to tilt away from the use of for-profit security firms in war zones.

Earlier this month, the New York Times reported that Blackwater "authorized payments of about $1 million" to Iraqi officials, in an attempt to bribe them into allowing the security contractor to continue operating in Iraq.

Blackwater has since renamed itself Xe Services. An investigative report in The Nation, published Monday, alleges that Xe is operating in Pakistan, where it is running targeted assassinations of militants and may be involved in a covert bombing campaign of Taliban and Al Qaeda positions in the country.

The US government adamantly denies the allegations, which would suggest deep US involvement in Pakistan's war against terrorist insurgents. The article's author, Jeremy Scahill, alleged earlier this week that the Pentagon attempted to "intimidate" him into not running the story.

historically, when empires start turning to mercenary thugs to expand and hold onto their resource-colonies... that epire has started its decline... especially if overextended into 'the graveyard of empires,' afghanistan. we can hope...

about 6 weeks ago, i went into a grocery here in my upper east side NYC neighborhood. in front of me in checkout was a guy wearing a blackwater t-shirt. i had to hold my tongue with both hands. he had the jarhead haircut; arms the size of my thighs covered with violent tattoos. he was rudely bitching at the cashier i've known for years, a sweet short fat black girl to hurry it up and get to him.

by the time i got through and went out to the sidewalk; i saw a group of people at the corner, some calling 911 as they watched across the street this blackwater thug beating the crap out of some guy who apparently didn't hold his tongue.he left him crumpled and walked away as if it was something he did every day. because it is something he does every day.

as for those calling the cops to intervene... if they'd arrived, my guess is that they might well have sided with the goon and actually arrested the guy he had beaten up – handcuff him and haul him off for more beatings?

returning troops are always high on the murder and suicide charts and returning vets in these wars have been higher than usual, 8x the average citizen rate for murder and 12x that of suicide. despite the fading bumper stickers saying 'we support ou troops' there are already thousands of homeless iraq/afpak vets on the streets of NYC alone and many of these will lose whatever marbles they got out of these wars with intact.

as a marine who refused to redeploy to iraq a couple years ago said, "first they turn us into psycho killers; then they send us to some foreign country to kill mostly innocent civilians; then they bring us back and turn us loose on our hometowns."

I think one of the most shameful things about the murders, suicides, PTSD, and other injuries among returning veterans is the almost blanket denial on the right side of the aisle, and among their supporters, that these problems even exist. I didn't support the war in Vietnam, nor do I support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We either have a case, here, of someone actually trying to apply the law to these murders for hire or...and this is far more likely, we have another case of the Bushappointed bastards intentionally acting in some illegal manner so as to get these murderers for hire off the hook. I have no trust in anything or anyone who has been put in any position of authority by the Bush 4th Reich.

Are these baby bush appointees who are throwing the case against their 'friends'? I mean, it looks like a repeat of the case against Ted Stevens...Oh, and the article currently listed directly below this one, states: Claim: Pentagon tried to 'intimidate' journo covering Blackwater. So, this just reinforces my suspicions.

Prosecutorial misconduct often rears it's had in cases the government wants to go its way. Ted Stevens for instance.

America is 99.99% dumb fucking sucker. Iraq had another 63 casualties for Thursdays count oh and how about investigating the 'surge' in Iraq since the media never bothered to mention that the kill rates didn't change at all during the 'surge', every media outlet including this one just blathering about how great the surge was.

    Propagandists.

Disturbing conduct. Disturbing conduct. Interfering with the disturbing conduct. Karma, illusion, fiction, coming to an end. Disturbing conduct. Erik "Amway" Knights of Malta Prince. Michael W. Smith, contemporary Christian musician. The Ruler of Our Hearts, The King of Israel. The King James Sword and Shield. Onward Christian Soldiers. Disturbing Conduct by the Justice Department. Disturbing Conduct. "You have meddled with the Primal Forces of Nature!! And YOU WILL ATONE!!!!" Some find it disturbing, I find it essentially necessary.

The rich in this country will take all necessary steps to assure that Blackwater remains intact and ready to protect them when the shit hits the fan and the population has no options left but to pick up their pitchforks and torches and proceed to storm the castle.
  • Hologram5
These thugs need to go to prison. Nothing more. They should pay for their arrogance. They did murder people over there and need to pay for it. The "Great" Empire is crumbling from within. It is only a matter of time.

How quaint... Blackwater's definition of "disturbing misconduct" makes the headlines. In addition to innocent Iraqi civilians, I wonder how many US troops have died at their hands in Iraq and Afghanistan? Halliburton and KBR already have US blood on their hands.

If martial law ever comes to this country, these will be the paid thugs walking the streets to enforce it. Don't believe it? It already happened in New Orleans after Katrina a-la a tidy little contract with FEMA. I wonder how many of the bodies we saw laying in the streets of New Orleans after Katrina had Blackwater bullet holes in them.

A good many of these goons are from the same foreign countries where CIA black sites are located. They would have no problem greasing an American citizen in front of his own house.
