bc 091126 amy goodman Amy Goodman felt violated by Canadian border officialsA U.S. journalist was grilled by Canadian border officials for 90 minutes Wednesday. Officials demanded to know if Democracy Now's Amy Goodman was going to speak against hosting the Olympic games in Canada.

CBC has more details here.

Goodman said that she and her crew "were flagged right off the bat," and that they "demanded her notes."

She said they sifted through their vehicle and perused one of her colleague's computer.

Goodman said that it "has a very chilling effect when you're a journalist and you're asked about what you're going to talk about."

Story continues below...

"How many people does this happen to that we don't know about?" Goodman asked, adding that "dissent is what will save us."

CanWest News Service adds:

A spokeswoman with the Canada Border Services Agency said anyone entering Canada may be stopped at the border for questioning.

Faith St. John would not comment on Goodman's case specifically, citing privacy concerns, but said there are many reasons that a person may be detained while coming into Canada.

``It's not an accusation of a wrongdoing,'' she said.

now U americans see what us Canadians go through at your border ( or even just overflying the US to get to Mexico, for example) ... Perhaps you do not realize how bad it really is (the US border people, that is)
  • marxymcliberalson
oh so The US is overzealous and abusing citizens right sin its "defense" of the "red scare" oh I'm sorry "terrorist scare" and other entering our country, so thank god other countries are doing now so AMericans cans ee what its like.

    Nose?
    Spite?
    Face?
  • Tyke
    Dumb reply.

The nose, spite, face reference would only begin to have any relevance if c r sommerville him/her self was the perpetrator of the questioning and delays. Pointing out a bit of irony to ugly Americans was entirely appropriate and dead on accurate.

... and Ms Goodman's "ordeal" is a puny fraction of the sh*t any swarthy complexioned person from Canada faces coming into the USA.

As an American living very close to the Canadian border I am frequently embarrassed by how Canadian Citizens are mistreated for the extreme offense of wanting to come spend some of their money in our country.

What happens when you overfly the US? Nothing. I'm well-aware of what happens because I'm an ATC in the US and nothing happens AT ALL Flights to and from Cuba, Venezuela and anywhere imaginable in Central and South America every day and nothing special happens to your flights.
  • George_of_the_Jungle
I think he means that when passengers are boarding at the port of origin they face higher scrutiny when that flight is to overfly US airspace. That is true, by the way.
  • bordway
You choose to travel to a foreign country; you can just as well choose not to if it offends you.
  • George_of_the_Jungle
Do you have any idea as to the damage such restrictive policies have had on our economy since 2001?

It's not just tourists who spend their money here, it's foreign students too, professionals doing research etc.

The "if you don't like it, don't come here" simplification is not very wise.
  • bordway
    Show me some numbers.

Obviously the vast majority of Canadians do not find it restrictive, nor do the students who come to study, or the professionals who come to work. The numbers in the majority of visas in categories of which you refer (B1/2, E, F, H1B, J, L, M) have swelled between 2003 and 2007. http://travel.state.gov/pdf/FY07AnnualReportTab... Canadians alone outspent the US in cross border travel by $3.3 Billion dollars in the latest quarter. Any claim of economic damage holds little weight in the face of facts.

A choice is made to travel to a foreign country and subject yourself to their entry procedures. Why is it unwise to exercise free choice and choose not to do so?

    Any non US citizen gets:

    Electronically fingerprinted AND
    A picture taken.

Everyone. Turns people off on coming here.
  • bordway
You think everyone that comes to the US is fingerprinted? 80% of travelers to the US arrive by land borders. Canadians do not require a visa for entry to the US and the vast majority of travelers enter by answering a few simple questions, never leaving their vehicle. Canadians reached a record $3.3 Billion in deficit travel spending to the US in the third quarter of their fiscal year. This has been the trend for 11 years. If you think this turns Canadians off from coming here, guess again.

Oh dear, oh my! -A 'news' gatekeeper/obfuscater of from the Left side of the Left Right Paradigm, one who had been good at demonizing/blaming her home govt. and capitalism for all the evils of the world, got scrutinized by another country's literal gatekeeper of the border while she was trying to enter for purposes of making money (promoting herself, her show, her views and her book as she admits in the video)

Don't forget, this is Amy Goodman, taking head of so-called alternative news show 'Democracy Now!' which from its begining was funded by the Ford Foundation (basically CIA). This is the woman who sandbagged David Ray Griffin by agreeing to have him on but at last second had Chip Berlet come on to counter Griffin by demonizing 9/11 truthers like Berlet and Morris Dees etc. did against patriots and unorganized militia after Ruby Ridge and especially after the inside job known as the OK City Bombing. Now this controlled media gatekeeper pretending to be 'independent' 'journalist', this hypocrite bitch complains that she may have a secret Canadian and/or U.S. file on her that demonizes her! Ha!!

BTW Amy- In Canada, (or any other country) they don't have the concept of individual rights (like free speech etc.) being from God and unalienable as our founding documents do--something you don't give a damn about since you're a Godless socialist extremist who hypocritically CAPITALizes on selling your 'product' -(left paradigm propaganda that doesn't really step on the toes of the elitists but in fact promote world govt. which will be by and for the elites/globalists/banksters who have not-so secretly fund her!) Either stay home and fight the New World Order and its symptoms here like the growing police state here in the U.S of A. or go live in one of those other countries where you're kind say life is better due to supposedly great 'healthcare' and 'human rights'.

I wish more people know what you know Scott.

Not letting the herd drift too far left is a key component to keeping the people under control.
She also ran great cover for Obama recently as he backed the illegal right wing Honduran coup with action, as he was telling sweet lies about trying to help democracy there.

Many kind wise people I know have an emotional connection to Amy. Her handlers and the dark forces who select the propaganda spokespeople understand her value and her appeal.
  • Schmice
What a dumb reactionary point of view.
  • Midlife Mediterranean
So, what? The same things happens every single day a thousand times at the US border. "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"
  • bordway
Ms. Goodman doesn't believe her prior history of dealing with law enforcement during protests or pending charges against her would be of any interest when entering a foreign country? Please...
  • Obi-jonKenobi
"her prior history of dealing with law enforcement during protests"

You mean her being arrested for covering the Re THUG LIE CON convention?? Wouldn't "her prior history of being harassed by law enforcement" been more accurate?

And, "pending charges"? What pending charges?

A good question to ask is would someone from the MSM been put through this kind of search?
  • bordway
Ah, I see the obstruction charge dropped. Initially all I could find was that she was charged, no disposition.

The answer to your good question would be most likely. Journalists traveling to foreign countries normally have permits or visas issued by those countries to enable them to do their jobs.
  • George_of_the_Jungle
    That's a lazy explanation.

The US and Canada, along with many so-called "US allies" have been cooperating for years now in an effort to oppress and squelch criticism and dissent from citizens, be they American, Canadian, British or Australian.
  • stormy7
I guess they thought Amy was a terrorist. WTF Canada, you're starting to act like the US government.
  • mogar2
I have enough people in this world to fight I am not going to start a p##sing contest with Canada. They can do what they like at thier border.
