seanpenn Sean Penn Cuba bound to interview Fidel Castro for Vanity FairOscar-winning actor and political activist Sean Penn flew to Cuba hoping to interview its revolutionary icon Fidel Castro, entertainment news website TMZ reported Sunday.

"Sean (Penn) is going to the land of Fidel as a journalist, writing a story for Vanity Fair (magazine) about how the (Barack) Obama administration has affected Cuba," TMZ reported.

Penn was traveling with Diana Jenkins: "Actually ... it's her plane ... she's married to the head honcho at Barclays bank," TMZ added, noting the pair set out from Las Vegas on Saturday.

"Barclays sources say Sean and Diana are going to meet (Fidel) Castro -- presumably because that's what Diana told them," the website reported. Penn's representative also told TMZ a meeting was possible.

Since taking office in January, US President Barack Obama has moved to ease a half-century of tension with Cuba, with small steps such as relaxing rules on visits and money transfers to the island.

The Obama administration has said it will not, for now, seek to end the US economic embargo, instead urging Havana to show progress on human rights.

In July, the two countries also officially restarted a dialogue on migration issues which had been suspended since 2003, and talks are also under way aimed at restarting bilateral mail service which was cut off in 1963.

Obama recently asked Spain to send a message to Cuba urging its President Raul Castro to step up efforts to improve relations with Washington, a Madrid newspaper reported Sunday.

"Tell Raul that if he does not take steps, neither can I," Obama told Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, according to El Pais, which cited a diplomatic source.

"We are making efforts, but if they do not make efforts, it will be very difficult for us to continue," said Obama during the meeting on October 13 at the White House, the newspaper added.

Its not a communist regime its a socialist regime.
  • Phil E. Drifter
well said. and i've come to realize with age/wisdom that socialism is not the 'evil commie' regime my own government taught me it was in the 80s.
  • marshalgarner
Nooooooooooooooooooooooo of course it's not evil like your country told you it was in the 80's - silly silly - Communists are socialists with guns, and all those millions of people that Lenin killed and Mao killed and all those silly people that Castro murdered- they all actually wanted to be killed.... They were begging for it.
  • marshalgarner
Um yea, and anyway - what makes you think it's not a communist regime, when did it change exactly from a Communist regime to a Socialist regime and what do you think the difference is? I'm just curious as to your take on it, the Soviet Union was the USSR United Soviet Socialist Republic, so I guess they weren't evil commies either cause they referred to themselves as socialists by name.....?? Oh yea and who was it that completely supported Cuba and hooked the up with Nukes? Oh yea... That was the Soviet Union... The Socialists? Who weren't actually that bad and clearly they're REALLY nice now. Time to take your meds and then it's going to be nap time.....

I thought the same thing after watching him take on W Bush for the past several years, calling for impeachment and opposing his wars.

But watching Penn shamelessly praise the war monger Obama while he has gone SILENT on all war related dissent says more about him.
He is a classic fake, who in effect helps sell the war by his shameless promotion of Obama. If he criticized Obama the same way he went after Bush, people would take notice. But he helps perpetuate the great lie that Obama is a man of peace.
Right now the USA lives in a dream world comparable to that of North Korea. We get lots of food, but our truth meter is as bent as theirs.

Sean is great and I like his approach, but just because your a celebrity does not mean that you are experienced and or authentic in your approach to journalism.
