scaliaexclusive Colbert: Scalia correct that cross has nothing to do with ChristianityComedy Central's Stephen Colbert complained mockingly on Tuesday that "our tradition of separation of church and state too often separates church and state."

He pointed to the Supreme Court's recent consideration of a case involving the constitutionality of an 8-foot cross elected as a memorial to World War I veterans on land that is now part of the federally-owned Mohave National Preserve,

Justice Antonin Scalia saw no problem with the memorial, arguing, "I assume it is erected in honor of all of the war dead. ... The cross is the most common symbol of the resting place of the dead."

"Exactly," Colbert agreed in his fake-conservative pundit persona. "The cross has nothing to do with Christianity. It's just the normal symbol of the resting place of the dead. Like it's just normal that picture frames are always sold with photos of white people in them."

When the ACLU lawyer arguing the case noted, "There is never a cross on the tombstone of a Jew," Scalia retorted "I don't think you can leap from that to the conclusion that the only war dead that that cross honors are the Christian war dead. I think that's an outrageous conclusion."

Story continues below...

"Outrageous!" Colbert repeated. "The cross represents everybody -- Christians and people who are going to Hell. And since it represents everybody, shouldn't we use it to symbolize every religion?"

"If Scalia is right," concluded Colbert, "the cross no longer signifies that Jesus Christ is the only son of God. ... Scalia knows it's just two pieces of wood nailed at a 90-degree angle. And what better symbol to commemorate those we send to die in a war?"

As Colbert finished, the sidebar ironically echoed his final words by replacing the symbol of the cross with a large "?"

This is just one more example of why I find it unbelievable that Scalia is regarded as knowledgeable in the law. The guy has covered himself in fruitcake time and time again. During the discussion of whether CO2 should be regulated by the EPA he demonstrated less knowledge than a ninth grade earth science student about how weather works. During discussions of evolution, he shows beyond a doubt (not just reasonable doubt, but ANY doubt) that he is totally ignorant of what evolution is all about. His warped interpretation of what "pay discrimination" means that led to the necessity of the Lily Ledbetter law indicates the guy is dumb, plain stupid.

He wants to know what an appropriate symbol would be? How about an obelisk? How about a square block of marble with some appropriate message carved in it? How about a Roman style arch? How mentally retarded to you have to be in order to be unable to think of other designs that lack religious symbolism?

Since long before WWII, Japanese marked graveyards with a kanji often mistaken for a swastika: it has opposite chirality, at least when printed on a map.
I don't know enough about etymology of individual Chinese characters, but my first guess would be that it came over from China along with the thousands of other kanji.
This suggests that the Chinese have been using anti-chiral swastikas to honor the dead.
There are a lot of Chinese and their history is long.
Which symbol has been used more?

You have to take into consideration that there are different crosses. People come to the assumption that a 'cross' means a lower-case, sans-serif 't'.

There are actually many different types of crosses. The swastika is a cross that the Nazis used, forever changing it's definition from a cross to a symbol of Jewish hatred.

Just as the traditional 't' cross came to be symbolic of christianity.

Scalia is a moron attempting to rewrite American history. See his wiki page for examples. He's the type of asshole that says '"In God We Trust" is on our currency,' completely discounting the fact that originally at the formation of our country, it was NOT on our currency. Same thing with 'under God' in the pledge of allegiance. Originally the pledge did not include 'under God' in it, it was added later.

Please stop trying to talk about things you have no clue about: the swastika is an ancient Asian religious symbol that the Nazis reversed in image. It had and has NOTHING to do with the Christian Cross.

Christ was a Jew. He was crucified by Romans, with the cooperation of secular Jews living at the geographic extreme of the Roman Empire. From this event and Christ's subsequent resurrection came Christianity. The cross is an enduring symbol of Christ's suffering, and most Christians hold that he suffered and died to redeem our sins.

Scalia seems to be limiting his argument to war dead. Obviously, not all war dead were Roman Catholics or Protestants. So he's technically correct that the cross pertains to all dead soldiers, including atheists and Zoroastrians. But I suspect the Vatican isn't entirely happy with him at this moment, given that he's a Roman Catholic who follows Catholic teaching in every other particular.

To me, the cross is a chilling, symbol of hate. How many of died throughout the ages at the hands of those by those marching behind a cross? Scalia, an educated man, is also a narrow-minded, stupid, bigoted ass-hole. If he would give us all a break and off himself, I would be only too happy to provide the wood to fashion the cross for his grave.
  • dkmnow
Well, that was funny and all, but this time Colbert missed his Big Shot at what would have been potentially a much richer, more poignant or even utterly devastating angle:

    Crosses represent LYNCHING.

    :-O

Even the Four Horsemen woulda' stopped in their tracks to do a double-take. Oh, well. Better luck next time, Steve.
  • Scatlia is such a shit. He can't even tell his lies with a straight face.

This World War One memorial is on US Government Federal Land!!! It does not matter this land is in the middle of the desert not near anything

However These crosses as they are for this memorial are the only religious marking and the facts are they are an insult to Jews, Muslims, as well as other regions not Christian; or for any non-religious believer!

I am a Christian but i strongly believe in the separation of church and state amendment as provided by the US Constitution. I also believe anyone should have the right to believe any way they want and this right should be always protected and respected as provided by the US Constitution

These crosses on government land should either be removed to private land somewhere or all other religions should also be represented equally

Scalia should resign. Anyone on the bench with that little understanding of the cross, (I mean the "CROSS" for petes sake!!!) has no business being on the Supreme Court. He is turning the Supreme Court into the Supreme Jesters...
  • Phil E. Drifter
It's not 'the cross,' it's a cross. There are many different types of crosses. The type symbolized by a lower-case sans-serif 't' represents the christian faith since that's the type of cross (a crucifix) jebus was nailed to.

A swastika is also a type of cross. There are many different kinds of crosses, just google image search 'cross' and you'll see plenty of different kinds.

Scalia is a christian religitard attempting to rewrite American history with his bigoted ways.
