Keith Olbermann personalized the call for health care reform by telling the story of his father's failing health Wednesday. Olbermann devoted the entire hour to a "Special Comment" -- Olbermann's version of an on-air editorial.

In an attempt to relate to viewers, Olbermann told a sad story of his father's illness. Olbermann spent 24 hours by his bedside. His challenges included potential kidney failure and dehydration.

Olbermann targeted insurance companies because their business models put profits ahead of patient care. "The insurance companies are at war with America," he concluded.

Salon's Mike Madden calls the hourlong commentary "Olbermann's wasted moment."

But the point didn't seem to be to pass reform legislation; the point appeared to be to chastise everyone involved in it, on either side, and to declaim about the nature of the system. Where Olbermann could have explained what the legislation would do -- and taken on the myths against it -- instead he spent his time making solemn pronouncements.

Story continues below...

As the hour ended, the MSNBC host called for viewers to join in an effort by the National Association of Free Clinics to sponsor free clinics in cities of moderate Democrats who may vote against a progressive reform bill.

A full transcript of Olbermann's "Special Comment" is available here.

The following video is from MSNBC's Countdown, broadcast Oct. 7, 2009.

To call Olbermann's thoughtful, sensative, heartfelt, and decidedly non-ranting Special Comment "Olbermann's wasted moment" shows what an idiot Mike Madden is. It was a remarkable hour of television that's rarely seen these days and distilled the health care issue to its very basic elements.

Actually, Mr. Madden's not that far off the mark. Keith DID want people to listen to him. I was glad to do it. The people Mr. Madden is talking about never watch Countdown anyway.

Olbermann is a wasted hour every night.

AS usual, Keith was 100% correct.

As a healthcare provider I am well aware of the consequences patients face with no insurance nor money to pay outrageous costs for testing etc.. Mr. Olberman resounded feelings alot of us share in this profession.
When my patients cannot afford their medications I fortunately have access to Pharmaceutical companies who can provide free medication-for this I am grateful. But no one should be forced into bankruptcy becaue of medical bills.
When I saw the CEO of United Healthcare makes $57,000 + an hour I thought of the United patients for whom testing was denied because I did not provide enough information to warrant the test. Who is in charge of delivering safe, sound healthcare-we in the profession or the executives reaping the benefits?
Mr. Olberman is correct in his attempt to call out hoses proposed to reforming our current system. If you do not work in this profession you have no idea of the inconsistencies that abound..
I am frustrated the people who trust me to care for them are not always receiving the best we in Medicine have to offer because of the cost. It is past time to reform a system that rewards CEOs for money saved versus deliverance of quality care.

It was NOT a wasted moment. Keith Olbermann is a champion of fairness and equality, and Repuglicans simply won't ever favor a just society. They must have "haves" and "have nots" in order to maintain their self-serving Us vs. Them, brand of politics. Here's an option that Repuglicans should accept, since it will be forthcoming anyway....GO STRAIGHT TO HELL, and get out of the way of those who seek a more just society.
  • For-profit health insurance companies are the enemy of Americans.
  • Savantster
just about any for profit anything is the enemy of humanity. for profit starts with natural resources, which by all accounting should belong to the people of the planet, not just a few that were "lucky" enough to come before. Us that came now, and those that come next don't deserve to be beholden to those that came before.. after all, we're all equal, right? So where's my free gold mine, free iron ore mine, free coal mine, free mountain lake to make a retreat on, etc etc.

the future is coming at us, we can't hide from it.. and it won't allow for everyone to live if the few keep "profiting" from holding back technology and resources for their own personal gain.

    The paradigm must change.

  • AGREED. These greedy profiteers seem to forget is that THEY WILL DIE EVENTUALLY.
  • McLean, Virginia -- The greedy, blood-sucking idiots who decry Olbermann's Special Comment don't recognize its effectiveness. Keith can build on this position now and help form the protest movement against the incredible selfishness of Republicans and "Conservative" Democrats.

I lived through my grandmother's decline and death from heart disease in 1964 -- one year before the passage of Medicare. We did not have the resources to pay for an operation that could have extended her life for some years. I am unable to forgive the politicians of that time; I believe they murdered my grandmother.

The continued greed of "Conservatives" has brought pain and hardship to many Americans. I firmly believe they will pay for this sin.

    Jesus Christ said,

. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
. 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

The irony of their greed shows in the fact that really and truly greedy, bloodsucking "Conservatives" are always the first to feed at the trough. They never look after their friends and neighbors; instead they fight against any measures to help those in need.

Uh, Jesus was referring to the goodness of people taking care of others, not a governmental mandate. As a matter of fact, Jesus was pushing voluntary sacrifice in order to serve needy stranger. I just don't need my country to push a law that says I must.

After Katrina, I've learned that everyday people can efficiently and quickly accomplish with donated efforts what our government only attempted.

He was pushing it because the KINGS of old didn't give a shit about the little people and hoarded all they could get their hands on.. and the people had no power or recourse.

Today, Corporations and their controlling boards/officers (who comprise less than 10% of our society) are the new kings, abusing the peasants at their leisure. Only, here, now, in America in this age.. WE, the PEOPLE are the controllers of power (in theory). That means, we can mandate that we care for the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked. We have the resources, we just have to tell the little kings that they don't get to abuse the greater public for their own gains.

    Republican = pro little kings
    Democrats = pro people

At least, that's how it used to be.. the little kings caught on and currently own 100% of the right-wing and probably 40% of the left-wing (which is also a misnomer since the Dems of today are the Reps of 20 years ago, we're sliding right in our leadership while the country is still old fashioned center.. evolution is pushing us left, so we're fighting progress so the little kings can be fewer in number and live in bigger palaces).

Some years ago, a co-worker of mine said, "Let the bleeding hearts and churches take care of the poor." Well, I'm sorry but the bleeding hearts and churches are about tapped out. It's time that a society of our size realize that if it doesn't do something about this issue, the whole of society will suffer. A person who files bankruptcy stiffs creditors who must get their money from somewhere, and guess what? We all pay in terms of higher fees or welfare. Let's get real. This health care system is costing all of us except for those who can move out of the country.

Why do I have to pay for your health ins coverage?

Leave my money alone I insure my family Insure yours - you handout seeking losers!

there are times that one has to question just what the term jouirnalist means. One only has to spend a wasted 5 or 10 minutes watching the confused ramblings of Keith Olbermann to understand and appreciate how the Journalistic profession has been cheapened.. I am truly at a loss to understand how this man even got to be in the position he is in... Truly there is an absense of talent .
  • I like Olbermann and I think he has some good things to says, but geez, one-whole-hour is way toooo long.
  • Savantster
    .
Life doesn't fit into nice little 30 second sound bites.. but that's what the masses have been conditioned to listen to. That's how "they" keep everyone duped.

Most things in life that have substantial value take time to build (including a well rounded world view).

One could pontificate non-stop on the abuses of our current system for days. Just ask my poor daughter who has to listen to me walk her through the various debates so she has the facts, not some 30 second "death panel" lie that sticks in the numb and simple minds of most people.
