hoyer House cuts workweek to 2 1/2 daysIn theory, the best job in American politics is the President of the United States.

But the president's now got some competition: House Representative. The Democratic-led House -- in the middle of the biggest healthcare fight in a generation -- has now trimmed their workweek to just two and a half days, leaving members of Congress plenty of time to ski or play golf.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) promised after the Democrats won the House in 2006 and then after Obama's election this year that the House would hold longer workweeks. But as the fall of 2009 wanes, the House has taken to starting on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm and adjourning "before the sun goes down" on Thursdays.

That certainly wasn't Hoyer's tune in 2006, when he claimed that congressmembers were going to have to work five days a week.

"I have bad news for you," Hoyer told reporters after the Democrats took over the chamber. "Those trips you had planned in January, forget 'em. We will be working almost every day in January, starting with the 4th."

The Washington Post blared this headline Dec. 6, 2006: "Culture Shock on Capitol Hill: House to Work 5 Days a Week."

But since the House returned from recess on Sept. 8 of this year, it has stuck around to vote on a Friday just once. For what? Approving an a 5.8 percent increase in Congress' budget.

Republican lawmakers accuse Democrats of hypocrisy, as the liberal party had previously accused conservatives of having lackadaisical work schedules when they were in power. Not everyone is turned off, however.

“Two and a half days a week is plenty of time to consider the ideas coming out of this Democrat-led House,” Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO), once a power-broker for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), told Politico. “Imagine the damage they could do with five-day workweeks.”

House Democrats say they're not holding many votes because the legislation they've already passed is backed up in the Senate. The Democrat-led House has already approved climate change "carbon cap" legislation and a plan to reform Americans' healthcare options.

Hoyer spokesman Katie Grant invoked autumn leaves in her defense of congressmembers' curtailed hours.

“Every fall we can count [on] two things: The leaves change colors, and stories on the floor schedule change from Congress doing too much to [Congress] doing too little,” Grant told Politico. “In fact, we have spent a great deal of time in session and gotten a tremendous amount of work done this year, and members are continuing to work both in Washington and their districts.”

I fucking love it!!! Honestly though, it's not like it matters these piss ants could work 24/7 and they still wouldn't get shit done. Our elected officials are some of the most worthless pieces of shit on this planet. They are too busy sucking corprate cocks and taking it in the ass from foreign interests (AIPAC), they simply do not have the time to do the jobs we elected them to do.

At this point if Bin Laden ran for president I'd probably vote for him because unlike these losers he can actually get shit done. Mind you I'm a former Marine and I'd vote for the very guy we been at war with (supposedly) for the last 8 years, kind a shows you how much I trust our elected cock suckers. It's time to clean house... Fire this human garbage and lets start over. We need to do this before they get a chance to do something uber stupid, like invade Iran.

    Fuck Obama
    Fuck Biden
Fuck the House and the Senate
ANd a big HOORAH to Ron Paul, the only beacon of hope in the pile of shit called Washington DC.

Every empire falls and if we don't get our shit together then American as a nation is done.
  • AIRBORNE !!!!! I totally Agree!

    HOOO FUCKING RAHHH!!

By definition AIPAC is not a foreign interest. The cocksuckers in the way are Republicans and their use of rules in the House & Senate. Sometimes Democracy is ugly, and so is making sausage. Ron Paul is one of the obstructionistas you deplore; find some consistancy.

Eliminate corporate money and we would then be able to revert to Democracy. As that reverred conservative statesman, Winston Churchill said, "Democracy is the worst form of government out there, except for ALL the others."

So what do you want? A Democracy? A Republic? A Representative Democracy? An Oligarchy? Anarchy? Despotism, either benevolent or malevolent? Or corporate America run like a corporation?

    Can we please reboot Congress!
  • CosimodiRondo
This is perfectly logical given their real job of fundraising, as opposed to legislating or investigating.
  • kscitydude
Congress has us over a barrel. They police themselves, set they own salaries, and budgets for operating both houses. No way no how did the framers of our Constitution see this coming.

    Stay HOME.
  • dennycrane
Could you imagine having a roof or some major construction done to your home and the workers only work 2 1/2 days and don't come back until 4 1/2 days pass? This country has been falling apart and they decide to "brainstorm" less. More worthless that tits on a "bore."

These "people" need the slap of reality. Who the fuck do they think they are?
Best Health Care in the Nation. Upper 10% of pay in the Nation. Full retirement after what, 6 years if I remember right.
    Fuck'em
Part time work = Part time pay
Part time work = No benefits
Part time work = No retirement

    Better yet, as Jhoffa_above said:

"Fuck it.. Cut it to ZERO days and GO HOME.

    Stay HOME."
  • Nonnie
Have they cut their pay from a 5 day work week down to two and a half days of work? They don't go back to their home state and work that's for sue.

These people are getting away with this crap on our dime.
The entire process that allows them to get where they're at should start here:

    A mandatory standardized national application process requirements for all elected public representatives before having their name placed on any public voting ballot should include;

All applicants applying for election to any public office of representation would be required to publicly disclose their medical, educational, military, tax, investment holdings, criminal arrest records and employment history before their name could be placed on any ballot.

All applicants would be required to meet the same psychological stability and physical fitness requirements that nuclear missile silo launch crew personnel are required to meet before being allowed near missile launch control panels.

All applicants would be required to reveal all domestic and foreign donors.

All applicants would be screened for sexual predatory/pedophile preferences and traits.

All applicants would be screened for fanatical religious, racist or cult beliefs.

    Upon being elected all public representatives would be required to;

Be banned from all communications with any lobbyists, con-men, known liars, thieves, perverts, religious fanatics, corporation CEO's, hookers and criminals, either directly or indirectly.

All elected representatives would be required to read in entirety...and pass a test on the content of each bill, with a grade of B+ or higher, before they can cast a vote for any legislation.

All elected representatives would be required to pass urine and breathalyzer tests before each vote they cast for any legislation and be subject to random substance abuse testing at all other times.

All elected representatives would be required to live in public housing while in Washington DC and public housing in their own districts when there, for the first year of their term.

All elected representatives would be required to take public transportation and pay for all travel needs, local, national and international.

All elected representatives would be required to pay for the most expensive and least effective health insurance plan with the highest co-payments available when they enter office.

All elected representatives would be required to work a full 40 hour work week.

All elected representatives would be paid based on meeting quarterly performance requirement goals.

All elected representatives would be exempt from obtaining any taxpayer supported pension plan while holding office...etc., etc., etc.

…Sort of sounds like what the rest of us have to go through when we apply for a job or what we have to endure to keep the jobs we have.
  • yvonneo
Good list. The only thing I would suggest be added would be something along the lines of a requirement that applicants agree to take annual or bi-annual lie detector tests should they be elected--just to keep them honest and their integrity intact AFTER they gain public office.

    3 words: mandatory random drug-testing.

    Ok, 4 words.

Vote everyone of these lazy thieves the heck out of office. Forget party affiliation! Fire these rotten stinking BASTIDS!!!!

Congress has absolutely no ethical standards...none! But, more to the point, the members have no real conception of the visible and invisible rage that is rampant among most Americans. Those feelings will break loose and when they do, it will be a day of reckoning for those who represent every possible interest but those of the majority of Americans. They are, in the aggregate, what has been termed our unrepresentative representatives. And Obama, in spite of the hopes and aspirations he generated among many of us, is discovering that he, too, must sell out to the true "owners" of government...corporations...especially Wall Street. What a tragic state of affairs!
  • That's not change--that's more of the same.

    A wise man once said.

"House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) promised after the Democrats won the House in 2006 and then after Obama's election this year that the House would hold longer workweeks."

Guess the lies continue! Seems to be the modus operandi of government.
    No problem assholes!
Cut your work week to 2-1/2 days per week, "We The People " will adjust your overblown salaries accordingly! It would happen to us, what makes you assholes think you're any different?
BTW, may as well pull all your seats together while you're at it and get rid of the aisle!
You're the same party....the WTCA party. "Whores To Corporate Agendas"
The overt hubris of these lying POS's,is breathtaking!

I am sick to death of this tawdry political theatre paying meaningless lip service to America.
Just Biz as usual, the Repug Perpe-Traitors and their Demo-Crap Enablers!

"We The People" , including myself have to wake up to the cold hard reality that we are merely pawns being thrown the dry bone that's left after the Uber Wealthy and their Cabal have glutted themselves on all the meat!

    RIP...AMERICA
