christopherhitchens Hitchens: Christianity is a fraud if its not literally trueIf the story of Jesus Christ isn't literally true, then Christianity is a fraud that promotes "a positively wicked doctrine," conservative writer Christopher Hitchens told Fox & Friends Monday morning.

Hitchens, an avowed atheist whose 2007 book God is Not Great attempts to divorce conservatism from religious teachings, discussed the role of religion in American society in the wake of a recent study (PDF) that shows the number of Americans who claim no religious affiliation has roughly doubled in the past two decades, from 8.2 percent in 1990 to 15 percent in 2008.

The study, conducted by Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, predicts that a full one-quarter of Americans will have no religious affiliation by 2028. The study notes that the number of non-believers among younger people is considerably higher than among older people, suggesting that the trend of Americans growing less religious will continue in coming years.

Those people who claim no religious affiliation are "not all atheists by any means," Hitchens told host Gretchen Carlson. "They're just people who don't attend a church, don't have a faith. I think it's fair to call them agnostics. The number of people, like myself, who think religion is false, that it's a delusion and that it's bad for you, is still pretty small."

Hitchens said Americans are increasingly turning against organized religion "because they want to push back against theocracy and the parties of God and the awful challenge they pose to us internationally."

Story continues below...

"By the way, your side seems to be winning in public schools, at least across America," Carlson told Hitchens.

Hitchens appeared on Fox with pastor Douglas Wilson, who appeared along with Hitchens in the recent documentary Collision, which explores the battle of ideas between the religious and the non-religious.

The two came to an unexpected agreement on one issue: They both attacked the notion, popular among some secular thinkers, that Christianity is a socially positive thing even if it's not true.

"If Jesus didn't come back from the dead, then Christianity is appalling, it's an appalling fraud and delusion and every unbeliever should attack it," Wilson said. "Christianity is not good for the world because it makes people decent and sober and that sort of thing. At the end of the day, if it's not true, if it's not objectively true, then I don't have any more use for it than Christopher does."

Hitchens echoed that idea, but made it clear he does actually consider Christianity a fraud.

"They say, well the Bible story's not really true, they're morality tales. Don't listen to it, because if it's based on a fraud, if the virgin birth and the resurrection and the miracles did not occur, which they did not, then those teachings are immoral, they teach that sins can be forgiven by throwing them on to a scapegoat -- a positively wicked doctrine."

  • I'm tempted to coment on the coments but will try to stick to the premise of the piece. In this one thing at least, hitchens is correct"If the story of Jesus Christ isn't literally true, then Christianity is a fraud" I am the well educated son of a attorney and have spent much of my life in the company of educators and professionals.I do believe Jesus christ is the Son of a living God and that every word written in the old and new testament is 100% factual information.I dont have any need to convince you of this however because that word also says that Gods people will recognize his voice,if you dont here his voice its because your not supposed to.

Agnostic is not an alternative option to being theist or atheist. It has nothing to do with deities.

If the Bible is not true, why does is tell of thing that are happening in todays time, when is was written so long ago?
  • jaronjones89
How is peace and love, a wicked doctrine? And if its a fraud how is it the Bible has been around for so long? And what is good about life with out God and his laws, which teach good, unlike life with out it which brings very unmoral and evil things?

Am 61 yrs old and at this point in my life I look out in this country and see a different kind of christain than I grew up with. I will tell you I can't stand what am seeing now. I am sure many people share this opinion. I believe in god but I don't go to church any longer because I am tired of the church preaching how to live with they are not living the same way. I am tired of seeing mega churchs asking for donations then they turn around and fly all over the world, buy expense cloths for their family and live in very expensive homes while people are struggling out in the community. I don't give to any churches any more. If we all hold our money from the frauds and give your money to your local communities that help the poor. You can go and get names of people to give help to at the human services offices am sure. Especially during the holiday when people in the local small town really need the help.

Christopher Hitchens is a courageous and ethical man. More people should feel free to express themselves on religious doubt or, their disbelief in god, and be proud to discuss their pursuit of the truth.
  • OldAtlantic
Your god of biracialism, Obama, claims to be a Christian while reciting the Islamic call to prayer in Arabic to Kristof of the New York Times on tape which it won't release. You are not honest on religion. Your every race is the same religion is false. You are taking the world down not up.

Why is a religion that mentions FREE WILL, only mentioned once or twice in the book of Fairy Tales diffidently overlooked to be substituted by Hatred, Submission, Manipulation.

Remember this is the Religion of convenience, remember the latest rewriting to take out the Liberal Passages. Ask the average Christian WHO translated the King James Version and WHY, the operative word is WHY? Yes again it was to allow a DEVORCE that was forbidden, ask them how the Anglican church came into being.

Yes ALL religions are FRAUDS if at best they should be ignored and regulated taxed out of existence, the promote Hatred, Ignorance, Indifference and Intolerance. If you don't think a Christian is Intolerant just say Bless you, and watch these Wackos freak on you, is that by Jesus , god, what god a simple statement turned into a political religious football.

Still don't think Religion is Hateful why is it these hate Mongers want political leaders to declare Jesus as their savior, remember Pat Buchanan making a fool of himself.

A persons PERSONAL choice in religion and how they practice it is NO concern of mine but when they start imposing their religious beliefs on me directly or indirectly through politics, education and or oaths of loyalty, remember the babbling Coe on C Street telling our political leaders at the Secret C Street House they are on gods mission and owe NO loyalty to the People that ELECTED them.

No any organized Institutionalized Religion is EVIL and the lack of accountability by trying to MARGINLIZE it makes it twice as scary, their total disregard of anyone else's rights and the imposing of their rights directly or indirectly only contributes to the insanity they call religion.

They are right, Christianity is a fraud if not literally true. . . even Paul in the Bible said Christians are the most pitiful people in the world if Christ is not raised. The promise of Christianity is union with Christ, that we can be like Him in this world. There is in Christ a way forward in this world. . . a living hope.

To view Christianity as mainly dealing with the afterlife is to miss the point and the promise.

of course christianity is a huge fraud! what good
has christianity done? easy to count the millions of bodies that have died because of christians.best proof of the fraud that is christianity is the christian
president who stole the 2000 election and did more
evil than any president in history. and the christians

I THINK THIS SUMS IT UP...
II Timothy 3:1-5,7 "But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of god; holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."
  • Liveliest_Crib
Hitchens, an avowed atheist [ ] 2007 book God is Not Great attempts to divorce conservatism from religious teachings, . . .

    It does?

The book simply documents many horrors caused by religion. It has nothing to do with conservatism. Hitchens, by the way, is not a conservative. True, he supported the neo-con's Iraq war, but they were more like strange bedfellows.
  • farang
Didn't George "God told me to invade Iraq" Bush admit the bible "probably isn't literally true" after he left office?

So how many more innocents were slaughtered, while Texas Meg-Churches backed their "God-fearin' president", because of his deception?

It's all about control now...sure, there are those that do charity work that have "Faith", but that doesn't validate it. They could do the exact same good without the ancient superstitions of the astrological myths.

And that is what they all are, you know....

On the back of the U.S. dollar bill is the illuminated eye above the egyptian pyramid which represents "Horace" the egyptian Sun God, who was born on December 25. He died for 3 days, came back to life, had 12 disciples - kind of like we have 12 months to the year... Christianity, Judaism, Muslim - just other similar religions based on the Horoscope, astrology, the movements of the planets so farmers could figure when to plant and harvest crops... It's as literal as Astrology... and then people use it to brainwash people and collect power by doing so... and brainwashed people are dangerous because they watch Fox News and allow their reality to be created by someone else. Addicted to believing a deity is going to save them if they just follow certain rules because they are mortified of the concept of Death. The rules are BS cuz they are always subject to change, some people are scared of change and cling to "God" erroneously thinking "him" to be their good babysitter that will give them candies in the afterlife if they just kill more demons here on earth. Then their crusade becomes demonic and violent and irrational. But I'm not against worshipping the Sun per se. Without it where would we be? The bible is full of lots of violence and racism and on and on, sacrificing your children etc etc. Not my message. A lot of crazy people and often serial killers are into some version of "the Bible" hardcore. It's all based on Astrology and farming, but often manipulated for scumbags who consider themselves to be "God's Bullies". Look what happened to the natives of this country named America. Almost all gone in the name of Christianity. Freemasonry New World Order, it's all on the back of the Dollar Bill in plain site.

    These folks got it right:

"All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit."
    ....Thomas Paine

"When one person suffers from a delusion it is called insanity.
When many people suffer from a delusion it is called Religion."
    ....Robert Pirsig

"One of the things that is wrong with religion is that it teaches us to be satisfied with answers which are not really answers at all."
    ....Richard Dawkins

"Many of us saw religion as harmless nonsense. Beliefs might lack all supporting evidence but, we thought, if people needed a crutch for consolation, where's the harm?
    September 11th changed all that."
    ....Richard Dawkins
  • mmeflutterbye
You can blame organized religion's entry into politics for the fact that young people find that most western religions preach a subtle form of hate. Besides, the awesome power in the universe is trivialized by the ridiculous religious dogmas.
  • darker
Religion is in the IMAGINATION of the beholder.
It's for those who WISH TO BE CONTROLLED by others since
they don't want to think and decide by themselves.
  • maninwarren
Christianity is a story of forgiveness and liberation, and celebrates the power of those things over the power of the sword. As such it is worthy of being an inspiration to millions. Those who need it to be literally true are missing the point. And it seems that those who need it to be literally true are also, ironically, the ones most likely to put their faith in the power of war, despite their claims to the contrary.
  • dennycrane
Why would you attend an "infor-mercial" on FAUX NEWS to discuss "how" many angels are on the head of a pin? Hitchens should have compared religious fraud to FAUX NEWS fraud. They both have the same agenda--lies.
  • allenallen
No religion spreads without miracle stories. The miracle stories are just that... stories.
  • thomas jefferson
ooo this guy will make the right wing heads spin. LOL

Honestly, the best part about Obama being elected has been the circular firing squad the repukes have willingly set up for themselves. LOL
  • bintx
No offense, but Hitchens would do well to actually read the teachings of Christ. He doesn't have to believe in Christ's deity, but it sure would help his nasty demeanor.
  • alverant
You mean like how Jesus approved of slavery and how he told slaves they should obey their masters? I'm sure OA would like that, but most freedom-loving Americans would not.
  • And you're a prick if you're not totally nice.
  • reuterspiel
The notion that there is a "side" to take and belong to is nothing but poison and demagoguery. What if you're like me and lots of others, who believe in a God/Creator/Supreme Being/Force/Sorce/ without believing in the traditional or non-traditional religions and it's practice? Spirituality without the religious baggage is hard to categorize, hence very unsettling to many. Why are we so worried about having to be religious, atheist, agnostic etc.? If you believe something in the spiritual realm it's by nature impossible to prove or disprove. That's why I will never explain, defend, or justify my beliefs to anyone.
  • LynnDee
Then there are people like me who think religion is false, although not necessarily a delusion and not necessarily bad for you -- even if most of the time it works out to be bad for humanity.

I think it's mostly... wishful thinking and that sometimes good things are done in its name.

A Rothschild/CIA Mk Ultra Victim under Protective Custody,,

I was used for storage of there deeds and thoughts,,
I was used like a telephone for communicating.

This was stored by the Rothschild,,in around year 1963
"We wrote the Bible to get Christians to fight our wars"..

This too was stored by the Rothschild,,
"The Catholics are the Evil of the Planet"..

How about we bring forth the scrolls that debunk the current Bible..
  • MrPunch
I think most people today do not realize that the bible is ONLY functional non-literally....

It is ancient text of sacred wisdom, a kin to many other.

It has been bastardized and used as a tool of control of opression(darkness), rather than a key to "illumination" for which these texts are intended.

I am surely not religious at all, but when I ever had read or heard passages from the bible, I have always been stunned with its non-literal, allegorical relevance!
  • SharksBreath
Would Jesus ride in that limo. Just asking.
  • Chris From Maine
I love how Carlson says "your side is winning in public schools" as if there are two equal sides, and as if thats somehow "news" or something that should even be surprising.

science SHOULD BE TAUGHT to children, not myths. The earth is not 6,000 years old. I'm sorry, but that just is factually wrong. Just because a 2000 year old collection of stories and fairy tales says it, doesnt make it truth.
  • Savantster
    .
There is nothing in the bible that says the earth is "6000 years old", it is a calculated figure based on calendars of ancients and time lines projected back from times in the bible.

Just like the Myan calendar ends in 2012, some ancient calendars used in xtian math started 6,000 years ago.

And of course "fact" and "science" and "what we can touch" should matter more than fairy tales.. but the deluded sheeple don't like hearing that they're deluded.

Original sin.. the real "problem" according to the bible.. was ignoring authority and being curious; seeking knowledge. I guess that helps explain how superstitious dim wits come to hate science (while loving watching the jesus hour on cable, or listening to it on the radio, or getting medicates to cure their diseases so they can pray for many more years, or lighting the dark at night, ... well, you get the idea... the entire modern world is thanks to _science_ and _observation_ and _manipulation_ of what we see.. science..).

If but only we had a society that embraced what they can see and feel with their own hands, that would believe their own eyes.. alas, 80% of people out there in this country still think the sky fairy protects them, provides for them, and will bring them to a better place after they suffer through the abuses foisted on them here on earth, in this life.
  • Michael
Hitchens is a fraud if he's not absolutely right.
  • Phil E. Drifter
No. Your religion is a fraud. Period. I don't care what religion it is, they're all frauds. They promise you everlasting life after you die in this one... in exchange for your money in this one.
  • mannymanny
thanks for your all-knowing wisdom. although, just for arguments sake, most wise one, there are plenty of xtians and other religious folk who have dedicated their lives to promoting and helping the poor and the sick, etc. no one promised them money. it's people like you, and hitchens, with your arrogance that really pisses off so many others. you won't win debates that way. you just make yourself look as cretinous as the frothing at the mouth fundies.
  • urizen9
don't give me the crap about morals and doing good. It has nothing to do with superstitions.
They always bring this crap up.
  • Adam503
Hitchens is absolutely right on this.

The mythological character "Jesus Christ" was the original mash-up. Mixed up parts of the Osiris, Mithra, Serapis, Zoroaster, Bacchus, Krishna, etc.

Been lots of virgin birth, rose on the third days deities around that part of the world long before the predecessors of the Jewish tribes started writing down all the regional myths.
  • Phil E. Drifter
Indeed. First they had multiple gods tasked with different things, then they 'evolved' to 'supergods,' a single deity which controlled everything. Even though the catholic faith is like a schizophrenic one with 3 personalities.

Look at how we came up with the names for days of the week.
  • jacbi
Agreed, Carlson is clueless. She was hoping for a big confrontation. Not saying where I stand here, but I am continously amazed at the number of people who profess to believe that by just saying the magic words "I take Jesus as my personal lord and savior" they have a "Get Out Of Hell Free" card. These very same people may have no real life application of the message that Jesus brought. My brother's keeper and caring for the least of these, is as foriegn to them as if it were to be beamed down by klingons.
I read Hitchen's as someone who has a big issue with organized Chrisianity today and thru the last 2000 years. He sees Christians as little children enthralled with the bling of the church. He sees us as toddlers who love the fairy tale and are too small minded to see that there is a moral message not some Annie Oakley pass to have a reserved seat in the angelic choir.
Wilson is wrong. Even without the "magic" show, the message is still there, waiting for us to hear it.
