michelle olympics Treason? Bloggers accuse GOP of sabotaging US foreign policyThe amusement and glee many prominent conservatives displayed at the US's loss of the 2016 Olympics to Brazil may have seemed like a harmless bit of partisan bickering, but underlying that attitude is a dangerous attempt to subvert US foreign policy at a critical time, left-wing bloggers are saying.

It is a generally accepted -- though sometimes broken -- rule of politics that competing parties criticize each other at home, not abroad. But that rule now appears to be ignored more often than it is observed, as Republican politicians take to the world's stages to criticize President Barack Obama's policies on everything from climate change to the coup in Honduras to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

A recent post by Eric Kleefeld at TalkingPointsMemo outlines numerous Obama administration policies that Republicans have taken to criticizing abroad. The most recent case was that of Republican Sen. Jim DeMint's visit to Honduras on Friday.

DeMint (R-SC) was a supporter of the military-backed coup in that country since it took place in July. But after word spread that the interim Honduran government had suspended civil liberties, DeMint found himself backtracking, telling TPM that wasn't taking sides and extracting promises from the Honduran government that civil liberties would be restored.

Ruth Calvo at FireDogLake calls DeMint's trip "sedition."

Story continues below...

"While our usually deluded wingers are comfortable working against the public interest, outright sedition is a new tactic," she writes. "While [Texas Governor Rick] Perry and [Minnesota Governor Tim] Pawlenty espouse the virtues of secession, actual interference with US foreign policy is treason of a more active variety."

The word "treason" also figures prominently in a recent column by blogger mcjoan at DailyKos. "At least, [treason is] what it would have been called by Republicans if Dems had done this during the Bush administration," mcjoan wrote.

The blogger posited:

The only similar situation that comes to mind under the Bush administration was when Reps. David Bonior, Jim McDermott, and Mike Thompson visited Iraq prior to the American invasion. Prior to the invasion. They came back convinced that there were no WMD in Iraq, and that the Bush administration was hellbent on taking us into that war, anyway. And they were, and continue to be excoriated by the Right for that trip.

Kleefeld's column also points to Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe's plans to put together a "truth squad" he will take with him to this fall's climate summit in Copenhagen. According to Mother Jones:

Inhofe told the National Review Online that his squad (he has not yet named any participants) will make it clear to world leaders that although the House passed the Waxman-Markey bill and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will probably approve a bill as well, the United States Congress isn't going to pass climate legislation anytime soon—no way, no how.

Apparently President Barack Obama's speech to the UN on Tuesday only spurred on Inhofe's desire to send a truth squad, if only because the address didn't include enough specifics (which, by the way, is also bugging environmentalists).

This past summer US House Rep. Eric Cantor was heavily criticized for taking a trip to Israel and attacking the Obama administration's policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Cantor told the local press that Obama should stop focusing on Israel's settlements in the West Bank and focus instead on the "existential threat" posed to Israel by Iran.

"The central issue here is whether elected officials should travel abroad to criticize and undermine the foreign policy of the American government," Steve Benen wrote at the Washington Monthly. "If Cantor and his pals want to trash the US approach from the floor of the House or in a press release, that's merely annoying. But for them to go to foreign soil and work against the sitting president is pathetic, even by the low standards of House Republicans."

Between the perceived undermining of foreign policy, the resistance to health care and climate change legislation, and the glee expressed at Chicago's loss of the Olympics to Rio de Janeiro, it's all too much for DailyKos blogger Nuisance Industry, who tells the Republicans, "Get out of my country."

We get it. You hate not just our president, but our country. You hate us for our freedoms. You'd rather have our people die [than] provide them health care that doesn't bankrupt them. You'd rather risk catastrophic damage to the environment rather than doing something about greenhouse gases. You actively fantasize about killing the president and hamstringing government from doing the work of government. ... The United States loses the opportunity to host the Olympics, and you're thrilled, simply because you can't stand that the president is a Democrat?

Tell me this, why the fuck do you stay here?

Please get it right! There was no coup in Honduras!! Zeyala was found guilty of a crime and arrested under the orders of the Honduran Supreme Court. The US government's own Law Library of Congress review shows that Mr. Zelaya's removal from office was legal.

  • We should never forget the past. In 1861, when Senator Benjamin Franklin Wade of Ohio said "mercy to traitors is cruelty to loyal men" we should look upon our present day traitors, the Republicans, and show them no mercy.
  • SouthernYankee
I am willing to bet and I know I would win that if this happened under Bush the republican Fox news station would be yelling and screaming that they were traitors and rightfully so. All the republican who support DeMint are nothing more than traitors.
  • Eleanor Boucher
So, that is why we don't react like the Bush team. One of the many attributes I admire about our President is his grace under pressure. He projects a sense of confidence and calmness.
  • vultwulf
A US Senawtor was negotiating privately with the Britis, on behalf of Massachusetts, during the War of 1812. So this kind of behavior in Congress is nothing new. That does not justify what happened in the past, but it does explain it in the present.

Sadly, there are so many other countries and religions that appear to hate eachother more than a common enemy. My Scottish other told me it was her opinion that the English easily beat the Scotts because of the bickering among the clans. America is the land of free speech, iif people disagree with Obama, or any other president, so be it. I am very supportive of our President and his initiatives and consider him courageous for walking into the lion's den when so many others have not. When I was a teenager in the 60's and there were people protesting the war in Vietnam, there was a slogan that came out against them "America...love it or leave it." I will never say that to another American, never...being extreme or fanatical just puts you in bed with the other fanatics. One thing I am happy about....there is dialogue going on now....this is good!
  • SouthernYankee
Eleanor I agree with you. I will tell you my family has a long history of military soldiers who always told me that I may not agree with the person who is protesting, but I fought in war to protect their right. Plus the soldiers in my family didn't like some of the commanders-in-chief but would never disrepect the office. They are all retired from the military and all were strong democrats. But you know these republicans that are running off to these countries are trying to undermind our president. It isn't right. I thank god our president has a level head. I agree with you his calm demeanor sets him off from the republicans and I think that is why people like him. Obama has to work twice as hard as other presidents and that is very sad because he really is the right person for the job during the crazy times we are going through. The republicans will never ever acknowledge that. I hope many people will reelect him.
  • Eleanor Boucher
Thank you so much for your message. If I could have one request of all US citizens it would be to not sound or behave like fanatics. I read a couple of these messages and it was hard or impossible to know what their position was regarding the GOP and the possible undermining of our President and his foreign policies. I am amazed at the name calling from obviously intelligent/educated people. Anyways, that would be my request...follow the lead of our President...the world will listen more when the person speaking comes from a place of reason and determination. I would hate to see the Democratic party fall into schoolyard behavior. Oh yes (wordy aren't I) we have a President that is actually taking the lead on government where no other president would go. Agree with him or not, he has opened the door to dialogue and it is rather exciting to see Americans taking positions on political issues. I just feel so good about President Obama and feel no need to swear, name call, etc to someone who doesn't agree with me. It all shakes out in the end. I swear this will be the last thing I write (smile) As Obama is so well loved and respected in other countries, I think that any government official who would try to undermine him abroad would appear petty, mean-spirited and untrustworthy. My God, Obama must have really pulled their covers on some issues....
  • SouthernYankee
Eleanor, I like what you write. I am allot like you. But I am italian and sometimes my temper shows. I am a person that tells it like it is. I have a large family and we are suppose to get together during Thanksgiving. I pray that god gives me the strength to hold my tongue. We grew up in a democrat home but I have 2 sisters that are republicans. My one sister is a doctor and she told me if Bush could have run again she would have voted for him. I told her he was bad for the working poor and lower middle class. I told her she could cut back on a fancy vacations but I couldn't afford to go anywhere nice. I don't begrudge her the life style she has because she worked very hard to get where she is now. But I told her that is time people at the other end get a break. I think President Obama will try his best. One thing I make it a point that we will not talk politics or religion. My italian relatives ask me what in the world is going on here? They pay attention and the think america is going over the edge with this healthcare issue.
  • Eleanor Boucher
My parents grew up during the Great Depression...now that was tough. I think it is obvious, more so now than ever, that material goods, vacations, botox (smile), expensive cars and wearing of brand names (ie; Chanel, Versace, Tommy Hilfiger)does not make a whole/happy person. Just as when Roosevelt had to convince the citizens and congress to help the British during world War II, or when Pres. Johnson began pushing through civil rights legislation...I see Obama right there with them. Taking a stand for healthcare. I swear it is the first time in quite a long time that I have heard Americans engaged about government. I remember watching a program that somehow Pres. Kennedy was involved with. It was called "Profiles in Courage"...good name, eh? Oh yeah, I think a little anger is normal and sometimes necessary to reach a goal...but not violence or self-righteous BS, eh? I'm glad that we think so much alike...it's a relief.
  • SouthernYankee
Eleanor, Do you know what the difference between a democrat and a republican? A democrat wants to do good for the betterment of humanity. Republicans only want to do good for the wealthy and corporations. That is the big difference. Yet republicans claim Jesus as there own. I keep asking my republicans friends if Jesus is a republican than why did he allow you party to lose the election? No response. My dad grew up in the depression to. My mother lived during the bombing of Italy by US bombers. I am 61 yrs old and I remember President Kennedy and I think as a young 13 or 14 yr old I remember what an impact he made on me. Being catholic I was thrilled. My mother named my brother after him. I remember being in Italy when Pres Kennedy came to visit. I remember the streets filled with people screaming in name and were thrilled to see him. My dad shouted out his name and he turned and waved at him. My Italian Grandmother had a picture of him on her wall. Now I am sure many people have Obama's picture on their walls. What an impact Obama has made on the country and the world.

"a dangerous attempt to subvert US foreign policy at a critical time"

I think the right wingers are just as loony as Al Guida, willing to destroy a society so as to keep another political group from ruling successfully, for even a short period. These people are indeed dangerous. If you want to stop the bad behavior, Those who violate our laws must be prosecuted, starting with the Bush-Cheney Torture Conspiracy.

WE must raise hell about this publicly NOW!

Get out in the streets in front of your Congressional Representative’s District Office and do pro-torture prosecution protests/vigils.

KEEP ASKING ALL POLITICIANS AT ALL PUBLIC EVENTS
    “WHY DO YOU SUPPORT TORTURE?”

The funny part is that all the "right wing nutjobs" most of you are reffering to, are sitting around "commenting" about the same civil war that you "left wing nutjobs" are proposing.

The commonality of the partisan zeal is amusing, and terrifying. Each side calling for blood because the other sides activities are going to "destroy" this country.

When a house so divided lives with itself for long enough without common ground or common sense taking hold of either brothers shoulder and shaking them into a state a civility, violence is nearly assured.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy. The longer the "common man" stands around barkinig like a mad dog from the commands of his ego driven party masters, the more unavoidable the eventual dog fight becomes.

But in dog fights, who bleeds? Is it ever the master? The leash holder? The agitators who pit dog against dog and bet on the violence?
No, those two men eve being staunch and zealotous proponents for their specific breed of dog, still shake hands, nod and wink at each other as they collect or pay their debts from this particular round of the dog fight and then they que up two more dogs and whip them into a frenzy on the sidelines while everyone sitting outside the ring place more bets, drink more whiskey, and smoke more cigars laughing all the while at the simple ignorance and controllability of the dogs.

Why not turn that anger and zeal back to the hands holdin your leashes. Bite them. Why not bite the hand holding the chain that chokes you, from each side of the ring respectively?

    Why not???
Because your good doggies! Aren't you?

Rightwingers are hypocrites of the worst kind. More than anyone else they LOVE to preach their piety, but it's just a cynical attempt to distract attention from what they really are. Kind of like the way devious perverts are become priests - to gain trust without which they would not be able to carry out their twisted cravings.

Thus evangelists tend to be rightwingers. Thus they speak often of "traditional values" while simultaneously being devote lovers of weapons. Thus they speak of Christ out of one side of their mouth while warmongering out of the other side. Thus they speak of freedom while wanting to deny it to non-whites. Thus they speak of truth while fighting it every step of the way as with climate change legislation. Thus they speak of the glories of God's creation while doing all they can to ruin the environment, protect polluters and end the endangered species act. Thus they speak of true values while defending the tabacco industry's right to kill. Thus they speak of compassion while fighting to their last to deny the poor affordable health care. They need to reaquint themselves with their Bibles, particularly Matthew 23.

I'm I the only one hoping that the Neo-con fiasco is finally on it's way OUT ? Certainly the passing of Leo Strauss in 1973 and now Little Billy's dad Irving Kristol this year has slowed them down. They pulled off their final heist with the recent bailouts and have emptied our bank accounts... and placed the collective national wealth in their personal accounts... I say we go to Switzerland, nationalize the Neo-Con assets and fund healthcare and education for the next century.. That's sounds fair to me...

Some like Checkers, I like Chess. While you all are watching Lindsey Graham, a man with ZERO power whine about a country that's zero threat to the US, (oh shiny, shiny), all of our tax money is being stolen by the same folks who have been stealing from us since Ronny Raygun took office. While you're sniveling about treason by an idiot or a bunch of idiots, the SCOTUS is arguing to ALLOW UNLIMITED CORPORATE FUNDING FOR POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS!!!! Yes, Virginia there are activist judges stealing your rights in this reality, right effing now.

You want your country back? You're fighting the wrong enemy here. The right enemy is ANYONE who stands in the way of reforming the American electoral system and returning the voice of the people TO the people. The only real solution is PUBLIC FINANCING OF ELECTIONS.

Just how long do you have to watch the DEMOCRATS deny 75% of America a public option they want before you see the truth staring you in the face? Vote them out of office!! What? Oh, Diebold says they win again? OOPS, too bad for you, America. But the exit polls say....... Well, that can't be right, let's check the votes. What? No way to track the votes? Who allowed this to happen? Why, we did, in between Springer and Oprah.

Party is immaterial anymore. MONEY talks and freedom walks. While you speak of treason, (oh-shiny, shiny) the multi-national corporations are stealing what's left of our liberty. The only solution is public election financing. Take the corporate money out of elections and the elected representative becomes real again. Until then? What's on Springer?

Just go back to sleep, to shleep, (ooooohhhh shiny), to sheep.

The justice depy. should charge the senator with treason. If it was a Dem. what would the R,s do?
  • genep34
I really think that instead of hoping that certain states secede we should start a campaign to force these states out of the union. SC and TX would be first.
  • zenofplastic
that thought is nice, but in reality we would lose tons of revenue, and the displacement of actual civil and rational people coming out of those states would be insane. Plus the civil unrest in and around them would be abyssmal. In theory it would be nice to just "separate" the people who dont want to help and just want to destroy from the rest of us, but how can this be done while still calling ourselves people who respect other people. Its obvious they do not want to work with us, but how can we nullify their attempts to work against us?
  • genep34
I wasn't thinking of taking it top completion but to start the process and
try to shame these people into getting the 10th grade act together.
  • zenofplastic
and thats the real surprise, isnt it? These people are immune to shame, and fact, and reason. That is what makes this whole thing incredibly difficult. Because there is no real way to talk to them, or deal with them. If you dont do things their way, which is the wrong way, they scream and yell and stomp around and threaten. They want to fight... they are the 10 year olds of the world. So, if we dont want to fight, but we want to reconcile, then how can we achieve this? If we do want to fight, we have to really just jump right in and get to it, because it wont be a fight where we all win. We just have to get the worst part over with so we can clear the air.
  • genep34

my father said the other day that a civil war was on the horizon. I never want to believe something like that could occur again, but, it feels so bad everyday when i look at the news..... i realize we cannot go on like this forever, because there is no break in the madness. Comprimise is a word that we forgot long ago, and people have no intention of bringing it back. There is a breaking point....... and our feet are moments away from crossing it. The government has blatantly turned its back, not only on sense, but its people. The law has gone insane, punishing and harassing innocents and performing savage acts without any reprisal. It will take one spark for everyone to go insane. Im counting the days till that spark hits..... then, im staying away from it all........ i dont want to see the madness and cruelty that will follow. Burned down banks, and govet installations..... neighbor killing neighbor over stupid religion, race, and failed political ideologies...................... people could say i am an alarmist, but, i dont see anything alarming about a problem that has been on the horizion for a long time now, and no one has made a real effort to stop it.
  • jlewd
Try to remember that this started eight years ago with a coup d'etat decision by the Supreme Court to stop the ballot counting in a state governed by the brother of the candidate they elected. Then get your protest suit on and go back eight years and display the depth of your committment to America.
  • OldAtlantic
Good assessment. Stopping 3rd world immigration is the first step back from the brink.
  • jlewd
Actually, it's racist assessment, which is why you like it.

Also, OldAsslantic, if we we're going to stop "third-world immigration," we should go back to stopping your potato-eating, ignoranus forefathers from inbreeding on the boat on their way over to America a century or so ago. Then we wouldn't have this infected gene pool of stupidity to deal with.
