Chicago doesnt get 2016 OlympicsThe dream is over. At least for one side.

"Chicago was eliminated in the first ballot of voting for the 2016 Olympics on Friday, a stunning defeat for the city that was expected to be one of the two finalists," the Associated Press reports. "Not even the presence of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama - nor a long list of celebrities - was enough to help the United States' third-largest city."

After Tokyo was also eliminated, the last two cities left standing were Rio de Janeiro and Madrid. Rio won out, and will now host the 2016 Olympic games.

The Olympics bid became a political issue the last week as conservatives criticized President Obama for getting behind the Chicago bid effort.

As McClatchy reported Thursday:

Story continues below...

Some Republicans and right-wing commentators are blasting him for going, saying it's a waste of presidential time when he should be doing other things, such as deciding on an Afghanistan strategy.

Some say Chicago itself is unworthy, calling it a crime-ridden city filled with corrupt Obama cronies waiting to line their pockets with Olympic-sized graft.

Some openly suggest that the United States should lose the competition.

A bold red headline on The Drudge Report gloats, "WORLD REJECTS OBAMA: CHICAGO OUT IN FIRST ROUND." Not completely satisfied, Drudge later added "THE EGO HAS LANDED" to his banner.

Another AP report notes, "Thousands of people gathered in downtown Chicago stood in stunned silence Friday after watching the International Olympic Committee choose someone else for the 2016 Summer Olympics."

"An audible gasp could be heard from the crowd," the AP report added. "Many stood for a few minutes, staring at the screen, and at least one flung his hands into the air in a crude gesture toward the TV screen."

Arent all politicians liers? You cant believe anything a person says in politics until he actually does it. We voted for the canidate we thought was best suited. Unfortunately he did not stick to the same decisions he said he would. we still are a country and we need to deal with what he does. Rebelling isnt getting you anywhere. You think McCain would be the solution to everything? we are in a war and a economic crisis. No one person has all the answers. It is easy for politicians to say they want something done but it takes alot of work and alot of support for things to actually go through.

Chicago is better off without the Olympics. Cities displace poor, spend money they don't have and are left with financial devastation after the games are done.
The Olympics were made famous by Hitler and the Nazi regime if that tells you anything.
  • PC
IOC is raaaaaaccccccccciiiiiiiiissssssssssstttt! They disagree with Obama.

But really, the amount of corruption that almost made the Utah games a disaster, just imagine how much corruption the Chicago games would create.

As a side note, I find it interesting that many people who would protest the building of new sports stadiums in cities were many of the same cheering on the Chicago Olympics.
  • jimbo92107
Honestly, all nationalism aside, ask yourself this question:

Would you rather go to an Olympics in Chicago, or Rio di Janiero? Which sounds like more fun?

    And people are "stunned?"
  • difin
the IOC did not want the people of the world to have to deal with the airport gestapo in the US.

Does Obama finally understand that it takes more than speeches to get things done?

This is more of an indictment against the US. This is one avenue that the rest of the world has to express their displeasure and even disgust at the contempt that the US has shown to the rest of the world in the last 8 years. Even the President of the US can no longer take the world for granted. Bush has wrecked the credibility of the office of the POTUS and has decimated its stature as the most powerful office in the world. I hope we wake up to this and take action to improve ourselves. Stop bickering amongst ourselves. Stop celebrating our failures and work together for wins.

That's okay, America will get the last laugh after we plague Brazil with Predator drones and Black Water Mercs... uh, for democracy of course.

I'm in Chicago & some people in my office actually celebrated today when we were eliminated from Olympic contention. Rio has been the sentimental favorite for quite a while and Obama wouldn't have made the difference if he had bribed the IOC. Chicago didn't have enough support -- not even Michael Jordan got involved -- to overcome Rio, a city in a continent that had never held the Olympics.
  • roooth
Agreed. We tried, Rio got it. Congratulations to Rio!

Why can't we appreciate when someone tries and show good sportsmanship when we lose?

Why not show a little class all the way around?

tarichar, you are a terrorist in the making, and you should quite frankly be in Guantanamo Bay with your anti-American colleagues-in-arms right now. Love it or leave it, tarichar!

actually....tarichar didn't say anything incorrect about Hitler...nor did he threaten any Americans... sooo I don't see how this makes him a terrorist. It is ok to be skeptical of our leaders....I'm sure that many people commenting on this site that support Obama have said many slanderous things against G. W. at some point. ahh hypocritical to the core. You Lie! lol

I was raised in one country but my father was born in another.

I was not his only child. He fathered several children with a number of women.

I became very close to my mother because my father showed little interest in me. Then my mother died at an early age from cancer.

Later in life, questions arose over my real name.

My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a reliable birth certificate.

I grow up practicing one faith, but converted to Christianity because this was widely accepted in my country.

But I practiced non-traditional beliefs and did not follow mainstream Christianity.

I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.

I wrote a book about my struggles growing up.

It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.

I became active in local politics when I was in my 30s and then burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office when I was in my 40s.

I had a virtually non-existent resume, very little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization.

Yet I was a powerful speaker who managed to draw incredibly large crowds during my public appearances.

At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy. I was critical of my country in the last war.

But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy. I had a plan on how we could do better.

I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess.

    Mine was a peoples campaign.

I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics and was able to gain widespread popular support.

I offered the people the hope that together we could change our country and the world.

I spoke on behalf of the downtrodden including persecuted minorities such as Jews, but my actual views were not widely known until after I became my nations leader.

However, anyone could have easily learned what I really believed if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with. But they did not.

Then I became the most powerful man in the world.

And the world learned the truth.

This was Adolf Hitler 1889–1945, founder and leader of National Socialism (Nazism)

Obama has managed to divide this nation completely in eleven months between those who want to take responsibility for themselves and those who demand that someone take responsibility for them.

Which group do you fall in?

Even CNN admits that Barack Hussain Osama really screwed up with his Olympic pandering. Can Osama do anything right?

    Commentary: Democrats' incompetence isn't funny
    By John Feehery
    Special to CNN

John Feehery says Democrats are failing to move ahead on their agenda on many fronts.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Jon Stewart had a funny bit the other day on "The Daily Show" (well, I thought it was funny) where he lambasted the Democrats for not delivering on their "supermajority" status.

As Stewart put it, "The Democrats seems to be the kind of people who switch to Geico and lose money."

And the Democrats' inability to move on their agenda is a little surprising. Their party has a commanding majority in the House and 60 votes in the Senate.

Yet they have thus far failed to deliver on a public option, climate change legislation is languishing in the Senate, the No. 1 legislative priority of the labor movement -- the Employee Free Choice Act -- hasn't even been voted on, immigration reform has been postponed until next year or beyond, and they haven't considered any of the big budget issues, like entitlement reform or tax reform.

Sure, they passed an economic stimulus bill, but it's not clear how effective it's going to be on the crucial issue of creating jobs. They filled a Supreme Court vacancy but didn't gain ground because they replaced one liberal judge with another.

They tried to change the name of the war on terror but pretty much went back to it. They haven't been able to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, and President Bush's internal security strategies are all still largely in place. They have drawn down some troops in Iraq but haven't really made any dramatic shifts there, and they seem to be largely paralyzed on what to do in Afghanistan.

And for the final blow, the president traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark, to get the Olympics for Chicago, Illinois, and came up with a big fat nothing. Not only did Obama fail to deliver, he failed to even get Chicago past the first round of voting.

If I were on the left wing of the Democratic Party, I would be pretty angry, too.

So...."The Obama King" - celebrity, liar and Con Man extroidinare - has finally been slapped down, and rightfully so! It takes alot of balls for him to try and persuade the committee to hold the games in Chicago, considering that this country and its leaders are "War Criminals" personified and the ultimate abusers of human rights around the world. So....f**k him!!
  • roooth
You know the biggest difference between you and Obama? Besides the fact that he is way smarter than you are?

    He has class.
  • George
Who gives a crap what Druge thinks. The guys site is for F___losers. How many times have city politicians believed they were going to get the Olympics and zero. Chicago is a great city but it was not their time and President Obama tried but that's the toss of the coin. As for that ass Drudge, a loser, whose site is fall into disfavor is not important.
  • ania425
So happy my city Chicago, did not get the bid!!
The daily killings on the south side ((supposedly Olympic location) and the corrupt Chicago Machine, would have embarrassed and bankrupt the city. Chicago probably would not have been the first to be voted out if the Obama's talked about what Chicago and the U.S. could offer instead of talking about themselves and stating arrogantly to the IOC they made such a sacrifice coming. All turned out well for Chicago.

    Congrats Rio!!
  • Anais
Drudge is beyond silly. Rio has as much crime as Chicago, so obviously crime was not an issue. I think perhaps the IOC thought it was about time there was an Olympics in South America. This will be the first time on that continent, and it's about time!
  • GWMustGo
Oh come on.... Did anybody really think that anything would have a chance in swaying the votes of one of the most corrupt organizations (Olympic Selection Committee) around? The President went there to try, but without handing out packs of $10,000 bills, Chicago would not get it.

Besides, the US has hosted the Summer Olympics twice in the past 40 years (LA, Atlanta), the Winter Olympics twice (Lake Placid, Salt Lake City), and Canada has hosted one of each (Montreal, Alberta), while South America has yet to host an Olympic game. It was time for Rio (but I would not have been surprised at Madrid winning, either).
  • President Obama could run into a burning building to attempt to save a baby and the wacky right would be cheering for the fire.
  • Triggur
Anyone looking beneath the surface implications for Obama's image or any apparent rebuff of America in any general sense will find a silver lining. A majority of sane people in Chicago did not want this and the majority of Chicagoans would have experienced no benefit. Counting myself as an Obama supporter does not include overlooking his error (other than supporting Michelle) in becoming involved. The reasons for his involvement are troubling, which is another subject.
  • tarichar
“WORLD REJECTS OSAMA: CHICAGO OUT IN FIRST ROUND.”
    “THE EGO HAS LANDED”

Just about sums it up. I bet Chicago might have had a chance if Barack Hussain hadn't made that sorry speech.

    Thanks President Hussain!
  • no_bullshit
Its funny how all of you idiot obamanoids complain about Bush- who was an evil scumbag, but take no responsibility for the fact that you voted for another lying puppet politician who is continuing all of bush's warmongering policies. Afghanistan- an additional 20,000 troops bombing and killing innocent civilians, Iraq- same amount of troops as when bush was there, Pakistan- bombing weddings and villagers, Iran- Same warmongering rhetoric as bush. Theres no Change. Quit supporting this scumbag because it makes you look like the dummies and hypocrites that you are. Next time, vote for someone who votes AGAINST war and the destruction of YOUR constitution.
  • glamgirlh
Obamabots never cease to amaze me. They're hypnotized by President Popular and actually have no clue or thoughts of their own that back him up. "Let's just complain about Bush all freakin day, because that's the only reason Barack's not getting all this amazing change done!" No....not true, obama's focusing energy on changing the wrong things, and not doing important things he said he would do...like end the war. he's sending more troops?? if i had voted for obama under the pretense he was going to send my friends home from Iraq...i'd be pretty super pissed at him right now...well i mean i am super pissed...but not for that reason lol.
  • Savantster
    .
Oh, and a simple matter of logic for you. Denouncing "them" is not the same as supporting "him".

the right-wing is full of psychos. Pointing that out doesn't mean you support "Obama".
    .
  • glamgirlh
lol so is the left wing savanster. one being Nancy Pelosi....i think she's absolutely insane.
  • Savantster
    .
What makes you an idiot is that you don't see the words on the page from MANY here proclaiming that Obama is massively failing to do what he said he would, and is, for all appearances, a black Bush.

There is nothing in logic or reason that suggests giving an accolade for a good deed means you "fully support" someone. See, that "all or nothing" mentality is part of the mental disorder the right-wing suffers.

And Obama hasn't been in office a year yet.. by this time in the Shrub's first term, he let 3,000 people die on American soil by failing to do _anything_ to stop 4 planes that were off course for 1.5 hours with no transponders. I guess, until we see the same kind of OBVIOUS problem under Obama, we'll not see if he's as incompetent.

I agree with you on our actions over seas. But those _problems_ were created by the right-wing. Obama seems to be "trying" to deal with it, and from MY estimation, is doing a shitty job about it. He's believing the bullshit from the entrenched institutions and interests in Washington, he's thinking we would cause "serious problems" if we just "walked out"... we would.. but tough decisions need to be made, and we can't win "over there", we're not fighting some noble cause.. we're not doing anything that is making us "safe".. We need to leave and deal with that fallout. Obama seems to think he can mitigate that fallout.. I think (as you do) he's wrong.

And there are other problems with Obama and how he's doing things. He seems content to use rules put in place under the right-wing that allow him overextended powers. He's using tools that were given to him (not so bad), but he should do the right thing and destroy those tools (he's failing to do the right thing).

At the end of the day, no matter WHO got elected, they would have a HUGE MESS to clean up .... BECAUSE OF THE RIGHT-WING and the destruction to our nation they caused.

get over it. calm down. let things shake out. If this shit isn't fixed before the next election, Obama isn't going to sit a second term. We can't do much to change that until then, can we.

I'm with you all the way up to Iran, as a matter of fact, Obama has made HUGE strides towards defusing the Iranian siuation with some very bold yet delicate diplomacy. IRan just agreed to send their uranium to russia for enrichment and most likely will allow inspections. I gots LOTS o' problems with Obama but his Iran policy is DEFINETLY not one of them.
  • marie2
With our racist marches and anti-immigrant health care proposals, who would want to be here? If they get hurt and they are darker than J-Lo and speak with any accent at all, they would probably be left wondering if something went wrong if they would be left to die in the streets. Way to go right-wing. The isolation and scorn continues. Don't blame our Prez. Blame, Beck, Limbaugh, Drudge and all of the Obama hating, immigrant hating racists.
  • glamgirlh
if you oppose some of Obama's policies..that DOES NOT MAKE YOU RACIST. A lot of people that voted FOR Obama now disagree with things he is doing. It is also not racist to want your tax dollars to help only those Americans who are citizens and also paying taxes that could go back to help you someday. I'm so sick of this "racist" comment being thrown around. The only reason people say it is because they know it's now considered a very damaging word to the reputation and because they literally want to take the cheapest shot possible and not actually use their brains to understand why there is opposition. "Oh there just CAN'T be any legit opposition! How could anyone disagree with someone as wonderful as Obama? It must be cause they're....uh..uh..RACIST! That's it!" Please...shut up.
  • marxy mcliberalson
You can go to Drudge and give them a "news tip" they swear its anonymous. I gave them a news tip about what I think about their headline there.
  • Savantster
    .
So, 8 years of the Shrub and the right-wing destroying America and her freedoms, illegal wars killing many hundreds of thousands, letting our rich tank the entire global economy by not having reasonable regulations (Clinton is partly responsible for that), and the most "scary" to "non-white people" around the world, illegal detentions and torture of anyone we feel "might be a threat"??

No country in the world in their right mind would want their citizens coming to America while we still have no solid civil protections in place. The war crimes of the Shrub and his cronies with the complete failure to hold anyone accountable for it has told the entire world that they are not safe in America. ANYONE can be "disappeared" at the drop of a hat. Would YOU want to go to that country?

DESPITE the President being there, we were kicked out in the first round. And the right-wing thought it was "silly" for him to go, probably because they are just ignorant and arrogant enough to believe "of course we'll get it, we're #1!!".. now what? Not even a personal visit from "the number 1 country in the world" *rolls eyes* could get is to last past the INITIAL decision of "who is the easiest to discard".

This is 80% right-wing fault, and 20% Democrat (notice I didn't say left-wing) fault; holding criminals accountable for their crimes goes a LONG way to REALLY telling the world we're back on track. Doing more of the same and not bothering to prosecute "ruling elite" criminals sends a clear message to sane people.
    .
  • Jack_in_Ann_Arbor
You don't suppose the viral video of the honors student being bludgeoned with railroad ties and then stomped to death just a few days ago had anything to do with the IOC's squeamishness about Chicago, do you?
