bodyscannerusatoday TSA, GOP Rep. square off in airport over body scannersA Republican congressman who recently had an unpleasant run-in with the Transportation Security Administration in a Utah airport is denying allegations that he acted out over being ushered into a line for a full body scanning machine.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), a longtime opponent of the security technology witch effectively performs a strip search on its subjects, told a Salt Lake City NBC affiliate that a TSA agent claimed to know "exactly" who he is, causing the congressman to wonder if the whole incident was direct harassment.

He added that while the body scanner is optional, agents tried to force him through it.

"They did not make it optional; and when I told them I didn't want to do it, they started treating me as though I was some sort of criminal or something, giving me the third degree," he told KSL NBC 5.

The NBC affiliate reported that TSA said it plans to review the incident, which was captured on video. The agency further reiterated to the channel that body scanners are intended to be optional. Passengers who choose not to allow the TSA to take an electronic rendering of their nude bodies are instead subjected to a pat-down at an alternate checkpoint -- an exception that Rep. Chaffetz said he did not so much mind.

"Then, trying to get the supervisor's name and ID number, the supervisor said to me, 'We know exactly who you are,'" Chaffetz told the station. "At that point, yeah I said 'B.S.' and kind-of spelled it out. ... I was frustrated."

He added that an anonymous agent had later accused him of acting rudely and grabbing one of their ID tags, then "throwing" his business card at them. Chaffetz dismissed the claims outright and called on the TSA to release the video.

These videos are from KSL NBC 5 in Salt Lake City, Utah, broadcast Sept. 24, 2009.

I totally agree with the GOP congressman and a few posters here. I don't fly anymore because it's just a place where you pay for the federal employees to F*** with you. Heaven help you if your a good looking woman or have even a bit of an attitude. We are becoming conditioned and many of these idiots that voted for this fascism will finally realize that it wasn't meant for "those people", but YOU. And it will get worst, believe me.

Total Garbage and people please. You're so brainwashed. The guy who says I feel safer while he gets a massive dose of radiation is NUTS. It's invasive and unnecessary and the metal detectors work just fine. They are conditioning people to accept being treated like criminals. The congressman was right. America better wake up quicker than this. Something is wrong with America but people are slow to put their finger on it....it's fascism.

Some TSA workers have a really bad attitude. They think they're jailers and you're their prisoner. THAT is their attitude.

Compare the professional, intelligent, multilingual airport checkpoint personnel one encounters in Europe or Latin America with the groping, snarling thugs I find in airports such as Memphis, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta.

They are not there to protect us,. They are there to humiliate and intimidate us.

I am FAR from being any kind of right-winger, but the fact is the TSA is a noxious artifact of the Bush-Rove Theater of Fear.

TSA employees need an attitude adjustment.

Jone and Jane Q. Public have to go through these scans but this CLOWN thinks he is too important to have to do the same.

He is a republican; of course he is a criminal.

    .
no, we don't have to.. did you see the part of the clip where that Jane Q. got her tit rubbed by that woman? You can be rubbed if you don't want to be looked at.

    nice options, though.

Oh,,, You mean they treated you like some ordinary person, who has no rights?

Wouldn't want anyone to see how small his "unit" is, although he does have his "magic underwear" on to protect him. These creeps think it's ok for women to be "scanned", but not them. Utah, what a shit hole.

Why does Congressman Chaffetz hate America?

  • Are these security measures really "optional"? Or are they just "optional" for certain 1st-tier members of society. Unlike the rest of us 2nd-tier and 3rd-tier people that are subjected to No Free Speech Zones and strip searches at the threat of being held "just a moment longer" and missing our flights.

I have nothing at all against security services making sure my ass does not get blow'd up on the way somewhere. I like getting there and back in one piece. HOWEVER if security is not uniformly applied without bias, favor or any other limitation, then it is not secure. It's profiling, and a falsely applied profile becomes an instant weakness.

do you drive a car? much more dangerous and less secure.
  • Savantster
Haven't you heard yet? The rule of law only applies to those making less than $150,000 /yr.

I love this story. I especially loved this part--"...Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), a longtime opponent of the security technology witch effectively performs a strip search on its subjects, told a Salt Lake City NBC affiliate that a TSA agent claimed to..."

    " 'witch' effectively performs..."

Looks like we're outsourcing our writing to china as well.

Stephen Webster, you have to feel like a complete moron!
