South Carolina Republican Dean Allen is hatching an unusual campaign.

In his campaign for running Adjutant General, an office which controls the state's National Guard force, instead of kissing babies, he's inviting donors to fire 25 rounds with their favorite machine gun.

Supporters at a recent fundraiser were entered in a raffle for an AK-47.

"Well I wanted a place where we could have some fun," Allen told South Carolina NBC affiliate WYFF 4. "You know most political candidates, Republican side in particular, they want to get out to the country club and stand around with a glass of wine in their hand and everybody talk."

But not this candidate. Instead, at his fundraiser, $25 buys a plate of BBQ and 25 rounds, with a choice of four different automatic rifles. An advertisement circulating before the event added that participants would get 10 minutes of firearm training "(so you don't shoot any right wing radicals by mistake)".

Allen additionally claimed to South Carolina media that he would love to see the occupation of Afghanistan end so National Guard troops could come home and guard against undocumented immigration.

He says the reason for holding a campaign rally at a firing range is to show support for the Second Amendment, the "most important" given to the American people.

Just look at their faces and you tell me. Shouldn't the caption be Hee Haw Hee Haw.
  • It's not a machine gun.....it's a semi-automatic rifle. One squeeze of the trigger = one round of ammunition discharged.
  • alverant
So a "patriotic" conservative is using a Russian rifle? Somehow that's very fitting.
