foodstampscouponshunger Study: In US, 90 percent of black children will be fed by food stampsNearly half of all US children, including an overwhelming majority of black children, will eat meals at some point during their childhood paid for by food stamps, an indicator of poverty, a study showed Monday.

"If you get food stamps, you are by definition in poverty and your household doesn't have many assets," said Mark Rank, a co-author of the study with Thomas Hirschl of Cornell University.

"The fact that half of American children at some time during their childhood find themselves in this position really ought to be a wake-up call to America," he told AFP.

The study found that 49.2 percent of all American children will at some point live in a home that receives food stamps.

Among black children and children living in single-parent households, the percentage is much higher: around 90 percent live in homes that receive food stamps at one stage or another.

And nearly all black children in single parent homes where the head of household has less than a high school education live in financial and food insecurity during part of their childhood, the study says.

The study, which was published Monday in the American Medical Association's Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, is based on an analysis of a 32-year study of some 4,800 US households.

It concluded that American children face the highest levels of poverty and social deprivation of any children growing up in Western developed nations, and they have the flimsiest social safety net to fall back on.

"It's always been weak, particularly compared with European countries or Canada or other industrialized countries," said Rank, a professor at the school of social work at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

"One of the reasons why our rates of poverty are so high is because we do so little in terms of trying to protect families from getting into poverty. We have to cast our safety net wider," he said.

Poverty and food insecurity are "two of the most detrimental economic conditions affecting a child's health" and tag 22 billion dollars a year onto US health care costs, the study said.

"Children in poverty are significantly more likely to experience a range of health problems, including low birth weight, lead poisoning, asthma, mental health disorders, delayed immunization, dental problems and accidental death," it said.

"There's a strong connection between poverty, health and mental health," said Rank and the detrimental effects of growing up poor, even if just for a short period, often carry over into adulthood, he said.

An earlier study conducted by Rank and Hirschl showed that half of American adults resort to food stamps to put a meal in their stomachs.

And don't use the lie about "all that money." Hardly any of the budget goes to poverty here in good ol' america. Half the tax money goes to the fucking wars that can't be won, that send poor people's sons/daughters as cannon fodder. Health care and lack of health care rob the poor of putting food on the table.

Well, that sounds like a right wing headline...why just black kids? To anger the racist Puke base more? There aren't enough living wage jobs to go around and the ones that are available go to whites? Is that what they're saying?

If we had not let the corporations run to the third world with our manufacturing jobs and ruin the middle class, everyone could earn a living wage and live with dignity. The blacks have already learned to live with dignity despite what this country does with our jobs, the whites are just beginning to find out now and they're angry and scared which is a bad formula. Don't feed the hate, fuckers.

"If we had not let the corporations run to the third world with our manufacturing jobs and ruin the middle class"

Thank you for saying this. it doesn't get said enough.

Why are there no jobs? Oh yeah, our manufacturing sector has been farmed out to the rest of the world. Might have a tiny effect on things.

Maybe further deregulation, to "increase competitiveness" would fix the problem, right? Ah-hahahahahahahaha!!@!!!11

BFD! When I was between jobs, we had to use food stamps. It's just not black children. It's part of the New Bushed World...the cavernous gap between the rich and the poor.

So what can people do to help stop this?
  • fukum
If the people can be less greedy and more compassionate and we can get the corporations out of the peoples business, that's a start.

    In other words, we're fucked

The MAJOR cause of poverty? Overpopulation. There is now too much competition for dwindling resources and jobs; I see it only getting worse if no SIGNIFICANT action isn't SOON taken.

If this issue isn't at the top of the list--along with pollution and land rape for greed--SOON, well, it WILL get worse exponentially. Why aren't these issues at the top of our alleged leaders' lists? Well, they have to focus on re-election to a SERVICE job and taking in corporate bribes to keep murder going for oil and the war machine.

Man seems to be hell bent for self-destruction and, personally, I would welcome it for the good of the planet and the rest of the Universe. Only "man" would even consider bombing the moon.

Welfare and food stamps are a sickness that only help strengthen tyrannical governments. Programs like this offer some people what may be helpful in the short term, but is harmful in the long run. Just realize that government gives out crums to the poor so they can justify robbing the working and middle classes for the benefit of criminal elites, most of whom are not even Americans! Wake up, slaves -- now is OUR time. Help crush tyrannical government -- you are not alone. Millions of patriots are now building a huge information army that will smash the lies. Be a part of it -- now is the time -- global elites are bringing the hammer down on America right now. Visit endthefed.us, visit campaignforliberty.com, and visit infowars.com.

Instead of restaurants throwing out good food at the end of each day, why not donate to needy families, In America we waste so much its not even funny.

Why don't we stop people from doing stupid competitions like bowling with turkeys or playing with food in general. This food can be used for the needy.

Hurricane Katrina wasn't what most people interpret it as. That natural disaster was an unveiling of a part of American reality that is never spoken. The so-called "9th Ward" can be any area in any part of the US. That is the reality. Katrina only unmasked America's dirty little truth about the levels of poverty in America. Had it hit a luxury resort city like Clearwater Beach Florida, the 9th ward and the living conditions there would still be the same, unabated.
