michaelsteele20090318 RNC chair Steele: Some white Republicans are scared of meSince being elected the first African-American RNC chairman, Michael Steele has gotten into some brief internecine spats for a number of bordering-on-insurgent quips against his party, but his latest might be destined to haunt him forever. And perhaps it's another indication that his heart isn't in the right place and that deep down he might think that he's speaking for the wrong party, even.

During a weekend interview, Michael Steele told TV One's Roland Martin that he has experienced fear from other selected members of his party because of the color of his skin.

"I mean I've been in the room and they've been scared of me," the RNC chairman said about fellow Republicans.

Partial transcript:

MARTIN: How do you -- granted, a popular president got 95% of the black vote -- you got any shot at getting black voters and if so what are the two issues that speaks to black voters for Republican have a shot at them?

Story continues below...

STEELE: Education and the economy. Education and jobs. Education and small business.

MARTIN: But your candidates got to talk to them. One of the criticisms I've always had is Republicans -- white Republicans -- have been scared of black folks.

STEELE: You're absolutely right. I mean I've been in the room and they've been scared of me. I'm like, "I'm on your side" and so I can imagine going out there and talking to someone like you, you know, [you're like,] "I'll listen." And they're like "Well." Let me tell you. You saw in Christie and you saw in McDonnell a door open because they went in and engaged. McDonnell was very deliberate about spending --

MARTIN: Right.

STEELE: I mean, Sheila Johnson was on his team. I mean, that was a big deal. That's because he engaged her and she helped navigate him through that relationship.

A selected sampling of prior Steele statements that have caused a ruckus include referring to Rush Limbaugh as a practitioner of "ugly" entertainment, claiming he went from "pro-life his entire career" to believing abortion is an "individual choice," offering "slum love" to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, hinting that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney lost in the 2008 presidential primaries because he was Mormon, and suggesting that the GOP was in dire need of a 'hip-hop' makeover.

Other "he said what" quips include his hoping to attract more blacks to his party by offering them "fried chicken and potato salad" and joking that the GOP needs "to uptick our image with everyone, including one-armed midgets.”

In March, Politico reported Steele was "[s]teadily becoming a dependable punch line" due to his frequent gaffes.

"There’s frustration that there’s no discipline, no planning," a 'well-known Republican consultant' told Politico. “He’s risking being overexposed by accepting every interview, which makes gaffes more likely.”

More from Politico's March story:

In a lengthy interview, Steele was unapologetic, referring to the high-level GOP critics and skeptics as “nervous Nellies” and saying that he actually has been tempering his public remarks.

“If I told folks what I really thought, I’d probably be in a lot more trouble,” he said. “I think that’s what I bring to this job, as a voice of the party: I think it’s important to have that kind of newness and rawness to it that grabs folks’ attention and hopefully ... take a look at what we’re doing.”

Not all Republicans are racists, but almost ALL racists are Republicans. Steele knows it...heck we all know it.
  • Houston
I am sick of race as an excuse!
  • jimco
If it makes you feel any better Michael a lot of democrats think your a hoot .
  • It would appear that the hip hop make over of the GOP is not going as well as expected.
  • Dr. Robotnik
Why would any organization (like the RNC) expect me to send them money when the head of that organization decides to concede the lie that we're racists?
  • SickofbeingcalledRacist
    he is such a douche
  • skornenicholas
Yeah, that's the ticket, let's just call him a douche. What are you, in grade school? If you are being CALLED a racist has it dawned on you that you just might BE? Out of curiosity are you being actually told you are a racist or are you saying you feel it is implied by the Democratic Party? The Dems are calling on the Repubs on party "leaders" who hold extremist views, as long as conservatives allow morons like Rush, Beck, and Palin to speak FOR them they are always going to be attacked as extremists, those people do have extremely bigoted and racists viewpoints!

Rush Beck & Palin are whats left of the GOP.

As a Republican and a major conservative, I see no real problem with what Steele just said. In no way is that a suggestion that he is representing the wrong party. Besides, he has a good point. Republicans have always been pansies when it comes to reaching out to minorities and dealing with racial issues. Some libtard accuses them of racism and they curl up into a ball and beg for mercy. Hopefully Michael Steele can help Republicans with that and help them talk to the African American community and stand up to the racial bullying nonsense of the left.

Your have quite an imagination but the name calling is worn out. Your record is stuck buddy.
  • sweasel
If you looked like Michael Steele and talked like Ronald Reagan, white Republicans would be begging to have your babies. We aren't afraid because you're black, we're afraid because you're RINO gray.
  • Rahm
He does not speak for me, I am not afraid. He needs to get off the race thing. Dam I want my contribution back.
  • skornenicholas
So which statement of his am I supposed to find outrageous or out of line? Mitt Romney DID lose the election because he was a Mormon, every follower of politics is aware of this. A majority of the die hard Republican base DOES fear non-Caucasian Ethnic groups, I should know I live in the South! Limbaugh IS the Jerry Springer of talk radio, he DID flip over on abortion rights, and he is a foul mouthed bigot! Plus the Republicans DO need to get the "Black vote," well obviously they do see the election of Democrat Barack Obama to the Presidency with a massive landslide victory amoung African Americans. These are not gaffes, it is the truth!
  • skornenicholas
I have to call bullshit on that IJ69, all Steele is doing is stating the TRUTH, it may be an awful and uncomfortable truth for most Republicans but facts are facts, the poll numbers and voting statistics speak for themselves, the majority, note not ALL, the MAJORITY of Republicans are white, middle to upper class Caucasians, likely Protestant, and generally racially biased. I should know, I wrote my masters on Racism in the Conservative Movement and defended my thesis to a panel of die hard Conservative professors and got them to agree! You might want to switch sides pal, Palin and Limbaugh DO represent the Republican base, sorry! To Houston, how about race is not an "excuse" so much as racism is a HUGE problem, when the system stops being biased on the issues of Race and Religion people will stop citing them PROBLEMS, note PROBLEMS, not EXCUSES.

The vast majority are uneducated easily manipulated by propaganda lies, fear & smear into a life of various subjects they are told to hate unable to reason for themselves.Their hate keeps them for taking responsibility in their poor quality of life: obese & alcoholic.
  • skornenicholas
"Racial bullying nonsense of the Left" Ah yes, the part where Democrats and Liberals are notoriously against racial and social equality and engaged in a frequently bigoted and religious ideology. Oh, wait, that would be the CONSERVATIVE PARTY! My mistake! Just so you fellas know, I AM a conservative, just incredibly honest, unless we change our entire approach from how it is now the Republican party is going to die a long, painful, agonizing death, and rightfully so, Time for some change in our own party chaps, time to get real and face the music!
  • edwards_com
It is no longer a party but a failed Ideology saying anything (lies) to get attention.
  • Scared of you?
No Michael, they actually DREAD you because you are foolhardy.
They -- we -- DREAD your presence there in the RNCC and long for someone to replace you, such as Ken Blackwell.
The Republican party has a number of black stars, a growing number, of whom we are rightfully proud.
You send out constant "questionnaires" with stumpers such as, "Do you believe the Democrat party should continue its fraudulent activities???"
    Duh... lemme think.
No, they should not continue.and now for answering that question, I am allowed to make a donation to the RNCC.
Anyway, I bundle it all up and return it minus a donation and have done so for months and months, promising at least $100 when Michael Steele resigns.
    That offer still goes.
  • D'Oh!
...and ALL thinking ones should be...
  • Dr. Robotnik
skomenicholas, I'm CALLING you a racist, By your definition that means you just might BE one.
