chrischristienjgovernor GOP candidates take New Jersey, Virginia governorshipsIndependents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.

Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell's victory in the Virginia governor's race over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and moderate Republican Chris Christie's ouster of unpopular New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.

GOP candidates take New Jersey, Virginia governorshipsThe outcomes were sure to feed discussion about the state of the electorate, the status of the diverse coalition that sent Obama to the White House and the limits of the president's influence — on the party's base of support and on moderate current lawmakers he needs to advance his legislative priorities.

His signature issue of health care reform was dealt a blow hours before polls closed when Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid signaled that Congress may not complete health care legislation this year, missing Obama's deadline and pushing debate into a congressional election year.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Maine voters weighed in on same-sex marriage in a closely watched initiative, and New York and California picked congressmen for two vacant seats. A slew of cities selected mayors, and Ohio voted on allowing casinos.

The president had personally campaigned for Deeds and Corzine, seeking to ensure that independents and base voters alike turned out even if he wasn't on the ballot. Thus, the losses were blots on Obama's political standing to a certain degree and suggested potential problems ahead as he seeks to achieve his policy goals, protect Democratic majorities in Congress and expand his party's grip on governors' seats next fall.

Interviews with voters leaving polling stations in both states were filled with reasons for Democrats to be concerned and for Republicans to be optimistic, particularly about independents — the crown jewel of elections because they often determine outcomes.

Dems gained a seat in the Congress. That's what matters. The states are the ones that have to deal with governors. I really don't care who's governor of this or that state (except for my own state). Hooray for the sane people of the 23rd District on the State of New York!.

    Raw Story: Are you serious?

VA: Repub ran as a centrist. Dem was a horrible candidate.

NJ: Dem was a Goldman Sax guy. He has is own problems.

The real story was in NY-23 where the Tea Baggers were destroyed.

Why would you sound like Fox News?

Republicans won two Governorships and the Democrats won two more Congressional seat!

That's big time, republican pick up none, zero, zilch House seats!!
Don't know about Owens, But Garamendi is extremely liberal, supports the public option as well as single payer, a very liberal dude is Garamendi on ALL issues...this man will NOT be swayed or intimidated by any republican...you can take that to the bank.

Again, Owens, I don't know much about.

Obama and the American people won two more seats in the Senate. Now Republicans won as Governors and let's hope they don't follow Rush Limbaugh's orders and make their citizens suffer as the GOP works to make sure Obama and the United States fail.
  • torqdog
Duh...... did you miss it? According to Axlerod, Limbaugh is no longer head of the GOP. He's now just an entertainer.

You need to check in more often and get your talking points in synch with the WH!
  • Limbaugh's too busy playing clips of himself on FOX "news" interview.

I guess they deserve what they get; insanity breeds insanity, though Virginia always seemed to have an archaic mindset to begin with. In addition to that, there are lots of people who have a subconscious desire to be raped-again and again. There appears to be a lot of Republicans, at least these days, who know that and will use that to their advantage.

This country is suffering an insidious disease at the hands of the GOP; it's called stupidity. Or is that political dementia? Masochism?

Where did intelligence go, anyway? It appears to have left the country.
  • torqdog
OK smartypants, if such be the case then what are YOU still doing here?

You folks crack me up. You just can't fathom the thought that your ideology doesn't resonate. And instead of looking into the reasons why your ideology doesn't resonate, you instead justify your loss by calling everyone stupid. Typical liberal whinning when you don't get your way!

Maybe if you ever pulled your head out of Obama's rectum and got some fresh air, you'd realize that your little hopey-change party is over. And fortunately for this country we may wake up without too bad of a hang over.

Gotta give you cred though..... you at least didn't do the usual blame George Bush you liberals always resort to anytime things don't go your way.
  • jwallace79
Blah blah blah blah no one cares.
  • torqdog
Duh-huh! Sure you don't! That's why you went to all that trouble to let us know how much we don't care.

    Thanks for the info!
  • jwallace79
    Fool.
  • torqdog
    OK...... and your point is.................?
  • davidrvelasquez
    You crack me up.
I've never drank Beck flavoured Kool Aid...How's it taste? I'm assuming it's tastes like ass with tons of sugar.
  • torqdog
Yeah, keep those lovely comments coming. Why is it that when Liberals are totally PWNED they resort to name calling and demeaning tactics? No discussions of the subject at hand to be found in those superior brains of yours?

And BTW; I'm sure it tastes better than the ass sandwhich y'all eat everyday from the Obama lunchwagon. ;-)
  • davidrvelasquez
It's not like you've provided any substance to any of your arrogant comments.
The GOP is still at its lowest ratings in 25years... have fun with your own lunchwagon.

Corzine is a mutlibillionaire ex-Goldman Sachs CEO. Deeds is such a conservative dem that says he'd opt out of the public option for health insurance.

Here's the message: We don't want conservative dems. We want Liberal 'Progressives who will fight for the change we want.
  • torqdog
This is very interesting in that we have the same opinion. In our case it's the RINOs that are screwing things up With 40% of the country identifying themselves as conservative, it's no wonder that repubs are at something like 20%

here's the message, we don't want liberal Repubs. We want conservatives who will fight to restore the economy and fight the change that liberals desire.

BTW; only 20 % identify themselves as liberals according to gallup so don't go gettin all cocky and stuff thinking you have some sort of mandate.

The Obummer magic spell is over. The Unicorn has left the stable!
  • dennycrane
Virginia remains a "crappy" state no matter what. Err, maybe "crappie" state. Still smells fishy.
  • Chardaker
The Dems deserve to lose since they, like Obama himself, have proven themselves too feckless to lead. Screw 'em. In fact, the HBO doc, By The People, should be retitled as:
The Power of Myth. (apologies to Joseph Campbell)
  • marxymcliberalson
anyone hear that high pitched whine??? Liek amosquito or gnat or something....SMACK!...nevermind, I go tit : )
