afghanistan poll New estimate for Afghan war: $1 million per soldierSenior administration officials reported to the New York Times today that budget projections for the war in Afghanistan will cost U.S. taxpayers at least $1 million per soldier, per year.

The plan to add 40,000 American troops and greatly expand Afghan security forces, supported by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top commander in Afghanistan, is estimated to cost between $40 billion to $54 billion annually. “Even if fewer troops are sent, or their mission is modified, the rough formula used by the White House...appears almost constant,” according to the NYT.

The new estimate for the cost of war in Afghanistan will cancel out the $26 billion savings projected for a 2010 troop withdrawal in Iraq. Under this scenario, the overall military budget could rise as high as $734 billion. The highest annual military budget during the Bush era was $667 billion.

A senior administration official speaking anonymously with the NYT said that concerns over politically volatile spending influenced the President during a White House meeting on Wednesday. Obama was insistent that each military plan incorporates the quickest possible exit strategy. “He knows we cannot sustain this indefinitely,” the official said.

In 2006, Congressional researchers estimated that the accumulated costs for each soldier in Afghanistan would be about $390,000. The sharp rise in costs reflects the increase in mine-resistant troop carriers and surveillance equipment, in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The unique difficulties of transporting soldiers around the mountainous, isolated terrain in Afghanistan also burdens U.S. taxpayers, military analysts say.

Meanwhile, the federal budget deficit has risen to $1.4 trillion due to industry bailouts and the economic stimulus program. Lawmakers like Sen. Christopher Bond (R-MO) have criticized the President for spending on domestic government agencies during wartime. Obama plans to order cuts of up to 5% for domestic agencies for 2011, administration officials told NYT's Christopher Drew on Friday.

Budget concerns come at a bad time for the President. “The debate intensified last week amid disclosures that the United States ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl W. Eikenberry, had sent cables to Washington expressing his reservations about deploying additional troops, citing weak Afghan leadership and widening corruption,” Drew reports.

Liberal Democrats in Congress are worried that Obama's willingness to increase the military budget will alienate voters who were drawn to his early opposition to the Iraq war.

Imagine if 1% of 1% of this money was spent on a real investigation of 911 .Then you would know that Afghanistan had nothing to do with 911and you would still have all those billions of dollars for use on programs that might help the taxpayers.
Instead you are invaders of two innocent countries. And in debt to the point that your children's children will hate you for your blind support you gave for the invasion .And the endless debt that support cost them.

yes that is true , but if we convicted the real criminals of 911. richard bruce cheney gang, and made a ppv tv special channel where viewers could buy lottery chances to enhancedly interrogate the convicted cheney gang members on ppv tv. we could pay off the national debt in 20 years or so. people all over the world would contribute to that scenario

Where the fuck is this "change"?

Seems to me this is just more bullshit driven by the Obama's war-profiteering friends at the CFR, etc. (Michelle Obama is a former director of the CFR's Chicago branch). We've now got a black puppet instead of a white puppet... some fucking change that is.

In the Summer of 2001, not long after the Taleban had almost completely eradicated Opium production - chickenhawks drafted plans to invade Afghanistan and topple the Taleban.

They couldn't sell their poppy proliferation and oil pipeline projects to the American people and needed some other reason to achieve this.

Then it happened, 9/11 conveniently occurred thanks to a group consisting primarily of Saudis, led by a Saudi whose family were friends with the corrupt Bush family. - All the while, terrorism warnings stating Bin Laden's intent to attack America were ignored... instead of being more cautious US defenses were put into war games / training that caused a state of confusion coincidentally on the exact same day Osama and Al Qaeda (which is not the name of a terrorist organisation but the name of the CIA database of Mujahadeen militiants used against Russia during the 80's) decided to strike.

    Our response:

    - Ignore that Bin Laden was treated in a Pakistan hospital under ISI guard the day before 9/11.
    - Ignore the funding and deem it irrelevant, also deem the fact that Mohammed Atta had met with US officials in the days preceding, and on the morning, of 9/11 - as irrelevant.
    - Ignore Saudi Arabia.

    - Invade Afghanistan and topple the Taleban.
    - Invade Iraq and oust Sadam.

Prescott Bush's nazi friends would be very proud.

As long as Obama continues this and continues to protect the Bush administration war criminals, he is, at least in my eyes, guilty of aiding them and for covering up their crimes.

Why not just give them the cash?
  • dennycrane
You're right. Just give the bastards the money and hide in "their" caves. The same with the war on drugs. It costs billions to fight, we are losing, just make a deal with the columbians, mexicans, etc. to pay them not to bring it here. Same as what we do with the tobacco subsidies, milk subsidies, crop subsidies etc. You could even do it with a bank robber that is robbing a bank to get meds for his family or putting food on the table. Desperate people do desperate things. During the Depression the street kids were stealing, robbing because it was a necessity. Today, gangs do it for fun.

War: The best money-making scheme that the Plutocracy has ever developed.
  • One million invested per soldier in the Afghan war is not wasted. Most of it is returned to American contractors. If we brought the soldiers home, where would we put them? Many would wind up in homeless shelters. Solving the problem is causing a migraine headache for concerned Americans.
  • kiboshki
    .
That money is most certainly wasted.

It could be going to training nurses, boosting teacher salaries, small business loans, repairing/expanding infrastructure, funding charity clinics, etc. Heck, with a million dollars, we could simply give 50 soldiers $20000 each to keep them off the streets when they come home, if you don't want to shell out for actual business development or training.

In each of these cases, the money is also going to Americans, but not to those that profit directly from death and destruction.

What's the problem as we know most US soldiers only get 25,000 a year for pay. Now for those who thought we paid for their meals and cleaning well we don't they do as it comes out of their checks. The money is for the Contractors and black mail plus the pay offs to the supporters and Law Makers. You don't think Journalist/reporters support the criminal acts for free. War profitteering cost alot. Now we must continue to pay Karzai and his brother and the Taliban. With other terrorist getting the cut to continue the conflict. Americans fell for the lies for 8 years and the GOP is betting they will continue, but President Obama is fighting to get our troops home and save the US taxpayer from wasting money. Yes we allow Bush to give Iraq 1 Trillion dollars as Bush said Iraq never had to pay back the money to the US taxpayers. Just think we could use that money now for Health Care.
