stewart bw7 Daily Show under fire for covering Israeli Palestinian conflictJon Stewart's comedy news show The Daily Show is reportedly under fire from pro-Israeli groups for giving airtime to two pro-Palestinian figures on Wednesday night.

Stewart hosted Palestinian democracy activist Mustafa Barghouti and human rights activist Anna Baltzer, author of A Witness in Palestine, who explained the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspective of the Palestinian side.

According to a letter reportedly written by Baltzer and circulated by blogger Eric Johnson, the show "was overwhelmed with angry emails and phone calls prior to the appearance, and up until the last minute it seemed like they might cancel."

"During the taping the show had its only heckler in 11 years," Baltzer wrote. "The entire staff were very nervous and may come to regret the monumental decision (and not make it again) as they will surely be inundated now that the show has aired."

At one point during the interview, Barghouti asserted: "We [Palestinians] are struggling for liberty, we are struggling for justice. It's Palestinians who have been subjected to the longest occupation in history and a system of segregation that is totally unjust."

Story continues below...

At that point, a voice in the audience could be heard shouting: "Liar!"

"Apparently we have Joe Wilson with us tonight," Stewart quipped, referring the US House representative who yelled "You lie!" during President Obama's address to Congress last month.

The segment drew criticisms from a number of pro-Israeli activists and commenters.

"Jon Stewart [had] a couple of disgraceful guests on his show on Wednesday night for a night of Israel bashing," wrote blogger Israel Matzav. "No, there's no pro-Israel counterpoint (perhaps he will try to convince us that ISM activist Baltzer - who is Jewish - is meant to provide balance). And I thought Stewart's was a comedy show. What if no one watched him?"

Not all pro-Israeli voices were as critical.

"It doesn't actually seem that groundbreaking," wrote Rafi G. "He has a Palestinian talking about Palestinian rights and he has an Jewish leftist talking about Palestinian rights. They are advocating a non-violent approach, both from a Palestinian point of view."

But the blogger noted that "nobody said a word about Palestinian terror or their not accepting peace deals that were offered."

Baltzer is now urging Daily Show viewers to send letters of support to the show, in an effort to keep the show from being dissuaded from covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the future.

And some commentators are praising Stewart for taking on the issue. TalkingPointsMemo blogger M.J. Rosenberg credits Stewart with starting a "sea change" in American media's coverage of the Middle Eastern conflict.

Rosenberg wrote:

Not long ago, no mainstream media personality would ever allow himself to be associated with anyone who suggests that diplomacy, not war, is the way to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Being thought of as not 100% down with the government of Israel was a career killer. And, if it wasn't, media and show business figures believed it was and that was the same thing.

That era ended with the rise of Jon Stewart, the most trusted television personality in America (and the only one the kids pay attention to). Stewart is the antithesis of the scared Jew.

Well, I for one, am a fan of Jon Stewart and applaud his courage--ironically, he is "the most trusted name in news" these days.
  • They've had hundreds of pro-Israeli guests: Bill Kristol, Jon Bolton, anyone from the Bush administration, anyone from the Obama administration...and they get ONE pro-Palestinian guest on, and this happens.

    WHAT...DOES...THAT...TELL...YOU???
  • I love obama
yeah and its kind of ironic how parody news is better than real news at reporting the real issues without slander or bias.
  • peaceloveunderstanding
wow this is ridiculous... kudos to the Daily show for showing the other side of the story. The Palestinians deserve for thier story to be told.... the Isreali government is making themselves look really bad....
  • dhfsfc
Someday, humanity will look back at the subjugation of the Palestinian people by Israel and the West as one of the great atrocities commited by man. Our government should be ashamed that they have done nothing to stop this!

Israel is being condemned by the world, and they are angry that people see the true nature of what they are doing to the Palestinians. They should be ashamed!
  • Elim
Israelis are an angry people. They pretend that their anger stems from what allegedly happened to them at the hands of the rest of the world (the Germans and the rest of us who failed to act), so we should ALL be ashamed, never blame them for anything, and let them do whatever they want.
  • yvonneo
Israel would have the rest of the world believe that the jewish people were the only ones that suffered at the hands of the nazis. However, there were several other groups--consisting of approximately 14-20-million people--that suffered the same atrocities under the nazis as well. Yet we never hear about their suffering from Israel, now do we? It's always just about them.

Also, why does Israel think today's world continues to owe them something for the atrocities committed by the nazis 60+ years ago? Most of us weren't even born then. Just how much longer do they intend to keep portraying themselves as victims, when the majority of the world no longer buys into that argument?

What the Israelis don't seem to understand (or perhaps they don't want to understand) is that the Palestinians have the same right to defend themselves from those who seek to destroy them, as Israel has to defend itself from those who seek its utter destruction. The law says, and the facts on the ground confirm, that Israel is stealing and illegally occupying Palestinian land.

As such, do not the Palestinians have the same legal right to defend themselves from the oppressions of a foreign military force that is illegally occupying their country, stealing their land, and killing their citizens? Do they not have the same right to defend themselves from those that seek to wipe them off the face of the earth? Do they not have the same rights as Israel to fight by any means they have available for their own survival?

I think our government is in bed with the Israeli government....or they're siamese twins or something....we do the same stuff anyway. How many wedding parties have our drones blown up alone? I would say we give the Israelis a run for the money in women and children killed throughout Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. And let's not even talk about torture. Our government is incapable of feeling shame because it is utterly and thoroughly corrupt.

It is we who should be ashamed of our government. And you're right on about looking back on these atrocities.
  • Adam503
That Siamese Twins comment was pretty close. We're been paying Israel big bucks to do dirty jobs elsewhere around the globe (mostly Africa, Cen./S America) we don't want to be connected with. The price of that diplomatically is the US turns it's head to Israeli settlement creep.

Israel seems to think if they do it slowly, they can eventually grab most of the occupied territories. The US is willing to to ignore "little details" like that and their nuclear arsenal if Israel keeps supplying small arms to the various Juntas that supply the US free access to oil and resources
  • danoh99
It's so easy to ignore history. 1948: UN attempts to create a small tiny Israeli state, consisting primarily of areas around Jerusalem were Jews have lived (and owned land) for thousands of years. Arab reaction? Absolutely zero tolerance. Attack. The Arab world then also simultaneously threw out 3/4 million Jews(!) from Arab states - who mostly emigrated to Israel. Israel then won the battle, and gained more land than originally offered by UN partition plan, a very small sliver of land smaller than El Salvador. Did some palestenians flee? Yes. Some stayed and became citizens. West Bank, and Gaza were still 'free' back then. After multiple attacks, up to 1967, Israel finally took over Gaza and the Westbank. The Arabs/Palestinians act like a bully who finally gets punched back and then cries 'foul.'
  • sickofit100
what gives the UN the authority to take land it doesn't own and hand it over to anyone? did you think of the families that were ROBBED of their homes and land before you made that statement? think about it and try to make that same statement again...
  • danoh99
Dear Sickofit100: Your very question belies your lack of knowledge of the history of the region. Do some ACTUAL reading and come back here. The whole point of my post was about ignorance of history: What do YOU know about the history of that region? Your reply sounds like propaganda ("Robbed" etc.). The UN had every right, because that whole region was officially 'owned' by the British, and the British mandate was the 'owner.' Before that, the Ottoman empire. There was no 'Syria' or 'Jordan' or 'Libya.' Those were all creations by the previous 'owners' of the land. The Jews had been living in that region for thousands of years, and were not 'robbing' anyone of anything. The Arabs living on these lands have simply been completely intolerant of any other religion having the right to exist in their midst. That is the CURRENT condition of every single Arab nation: Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Egypt etc. They have EXTREME intolerance - hatred for 'infidels': Those who do not believe in the prophet Mohammed. Are you aware of the fact that anyone who is of a different religion is harassed to the point of: Death, imprisonment, extradition, emigration. There are, for all intents and purposes no minority religions in any current Arab country (unless you count the few dozen or hundred 'survivors'). THAT, is the reason for the current state of affairs in the region. And THAT is an OBJECTIVE assessment- because it is based on CURRENT POLITICAL FACTS, not some rant about poor victims.
I could go on about the millions of Palestinians that call Jordan home, the statements-on record- made by countless Arab leaders, including Arafat, that the Palestinian issue is a 'political ploy' designed to push the Agenda of destroying Israel. Which by the way, killing every Jew is a part of the HAMAS's very charter.
Arabs live in Peace, as citizens inside of Israel and are a part of the Parliament there. Can you say that for any other Arab nation?
If Arabs actually wanted peace - they could have it- now.
  • palestinian refugee
simple question: how come my grandfather and father were living in a palestinian camp in lebanon? did they sell their homes to lovely zionist and preferred staying in the high class palestinian camps in lebanon?!
Most of palestinian refugees are willing to go back to their homes. Additionally, I know many palestinians who are now holding canadian, german, american and swedish citizenships who keep thinking of their right to return to their looted homes. If you want to talk history, then what were jews doing in egypt before moving to Palestine? Who were the people living on that land and to what race do they belong to?

Anyway, I don't care about history anymore regarding the palestinian-israeli situation. I think israeli are missing a unique chance of achieving peace with palestinians but they have to compromise because peace is something mutual. No compromises by israelis will be faced by the same thing by palestinians as the oppisite have been applied to the palestinians!

    Salam, Shalom, Peace

true that some jews (a tiny minority lived in Palestine with the locals , but they were also in tiny Amounts living across the muslim world (morocco , iran , tunisia , etc. where they found sanctuary after being slaughtered by Europeans (especially Isabella of spain . Under the ottoman empire jews had good jobs too , including advisors and personal doctors in Andalucia .
Arabs did not threw away Jews , the Agency did all it could to find People to populate Israel . Sure there was some anger after the creation of israel but the agency bribed here and there , and bombed cafes (Mordechai Ben Porat ) so that Arab jews come and become the Labour force to the european Ashkenazis . Samir Naqqash (Iraqi Jew ) said he was handcuffed by the agency and taken by force to Israel . Naiem Giladi (iraqi jew ) say also lots of good things he wrote : Ben gurion scandals and how the Hagannah killed jews . i recommend it .

Here, here-good show. It's ashamed this dialogue must take place on a comedy show, this should be led by our so called State Dept. Paging Hillary...
  • surgethis
Israel is dangerous .... They have one intention ... one goal. To destroy the Palestinians ... to beat them down until they are broken for all eternity. They are willing to create any justification to meat this end. Israel has all the power but they claim to be the victim. Meanwhile the Palestinian people are hoarded into camps ... their resources reduced to a trickle ... children shot at by Israeli military as if their lives are all completely worthless.

The US and all of us who live here are responsible. With out the support of our military and propaganda Israel can not wage it's all out assault against the Palestinians .... You cannot hoard people into camps restrict their food and medical supply .. bomb their homes and use their children for target practice with overwhelming military aggression and not have consequences ... But in the US what we hear about is how bad the Palestinians are ... that they are ruthless murderers .... terrorists .... you never hear the other side of it and when someone does try to talk about it they are ruthlessly attacked ... that right there is the actions of guilt.

It's time for the right wing war criminals in Israel to face up to their crimes. And spare me your indignation if you think otherwise ... you've had your decades of lies and deceit ... enough.
  • dsmith
Exactly surgethis...Israel has threatened the UN not to release the Goldberg Report which will show that Israel committed war crimes. Israel...threatening the UN? They do have a high opinion of themselves.

I'm not sure how anyone can look at the Krakow Ghetto of WWII and not compare it to the way Israel is now treating the Palestinians.

Contact your congressmen and senators to cut off aid to Israel now.
  • doctim11
Shut the fuck up moron, you know not of what you cry about.
  • donofcali
It seems like the poster summed it up accurately. Read your bible. The Israelis have been attacking and persecuting Palestinians ever since the butcher Moses led his troops to slaughter the Midianites (Numbers 31) nearly 3000 years ago.

You allude to some knowledge not disclosed. Enlighten us to your arcane knowledge oh wise one.
  • poiboi
Dude, at least Try to avoid down-talking major biblical figures till you know what you're talking about -- not that there aren't some things to be said, but tracing this problem back to"the butcher Moses?"?... Moses never made it to the biblical "promised land". He was already dead.

"You allude to some knowledge not disclosed. Enlighten us to your arcane knowledge oh wise one."

...and these high-handed type comments don't help either.
