Police tactics used to disperse a large student assembly at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday evening have become the focus of an Internet media firestorm.

Multiple videos of the police action against apparently peaceful students have surfaced on the Internet. Confirmed details apart from recordings are scarce at this hour, but the first clip included below shows two officers in riot gear hitting a young female with batons, while others show numerous seemingly random arrests taking place as students were forced out of the public areas on campus by police firing tear gas and other projectiles.

"The group, estimated at close to 500 people, gathered near Schenley Plaza around 10 p.m., with students saying they were drawn because they were angry over Thursday’s protests and how the riot police treated students," reported The New York Times. "Some students say their curiosity was piqued by a university message warning them to stay off the streets."

According to the Associated Press, police say they arrested 60 people after declaring the student gathering to be "illegal" -- a figure that makes up the bulk of the 83 arrested all across Pittsburgh during the G20 summit.

The G20 summits routinely attract crowds of activists for scores of causes as well as anarchists opposed to what they see as inhumane free market policies.

Story continues below...

An earlier, larger demonstration took place without any incident.

Security forces in Pittsburgh said there were up to 4,500 marchers, but Peter Shell, president of the Thomas Merton Center which helped organize the march, estimated the number at twice that.

"It was the biggest protest march in Pittsburgh since the 1970s protests against Vietnam," Shell told AFP.

The videos below contain profanity and some violence.

This video was uploaded to YouTube on Sept. 25, 2009.

How delusional you liberal morons are. Peaceful protest my ass!! Anarchist dressed in black wanting to over throw the government is peaceful? LOL. Stephen Webster is a disgrace as a journalist to write such blatant lies.
He probably thinks that the old people protesting against health care are radical racist revolutionist.
You liberal asses are preaching to a very small choir, and think that the rest of the population is going to swallow your bullsh*t like Neo in The Matrix swallowed his blue pill...please. Liberals are so out of touch, lunatics, bigots, and pathological liars. Yes I called Liberals Bigots!!! If you don't agree with their insane views, ethos, or ideology you are looked upon with the exact same ugly hatred as a white supremacist, and treated even lower.
Get a life and grow the hell up you delusional clowns.
  • That last paragraph was the most hypocritical thing I think I've ever read.
  • A
I've seen worse, as far as statements go.

Far left, far right, doesn't matter. Extremists on both ends are insane.

I still say that those students should suck it up--they where in an area where they were not supposed to be, even though they'd been notified to stay off the streets. They abused their freedoms and got what was coming to them. Again, I should have expected no less.

People ask what's wrong with America these days. I'll tell you what's wrong--people think that they can do anything they want without regard for the consequences of their actions. Yeah, you have the RIGHT to play with fire... but that doesn't keep you from getting burned.

If we want to turn this country around, everyone needs to stop using the Constitution as a shield and use a little sense. For instance...

"There are heavily armed police out and about. There is a sign on campus saying that we should stay off the streets."

The logical conclusion there is: "Stay off the streets."

The popular response to this was: "Gather in front of the heavily armed police in a restricted area."

Really--Whoever's outraged, well, yes, it was a waste of tear gas, and unnecessary wear and tear on the batons. Whoever is outraged and thinks that the police were wrong to enforce the law there, however, needs to get their head checked. Those who didn't see it coming at all, well, they were probably with that little band of students, and now know better.

If people wouldn't gather where they aren't supposed to be in the first place, things like this wouldn't happen. Sure, it may have been a waste of tear gas, but if you can't take the heat, stay out of the fire.

Ohhhhhhhh...you must be one of those that considers the U.S. Constitution to be "nothing but a goddamned piece of paper," huh? And that any Americans that have the audacity to exercise their rights under the Constitution should be punished, imprisoned or worse, even if what they're doing is not illegal? Fuck you! Sounds like there should be a big "T" on your forehead asswipe.
  • A
Ohhhhhhhh... you must be one of those that considers typing angry comments on the Internet to be intimidating. Believe me, I'm shivering in my boots.

No, the US Constitution is not just "a goddamned piece of paper," as you so tactfully put it. People have their rights, all around. But, as with anything, there are consequences that must be observed when "exercising your rights under the Constitution." For instance, if you decide to exercise your right to be in an area where you aren't supposed to be, you shouldn't expect anything less than the security forces protecting the area to do their job and chase you off. This particular case merely involved tear gas and riot tactics.

Not to condone what the officers did, but if you're going to go charging in headfirst with a "damn the consequences, I have rights" mentality, well, I'm afraid that I would expect no less than for you to get your ass handed to you on a platter, and more. The problem with this country today is people like you, "yvonne," who hide behind and abuse the rights granted to you by the Bill of Rights.

After all, damn the consequences, "yvonne..." you have rights!
  • Name
Luke Rudowski Bullhorning them worked best. The NEXT protest should be in your face protest of the police with YOU ARE A|CTING LIKE NAZI with SWASTIKA's banners and the crowd zeigheiling at regular intervals. The media will have a hard time ignoring that.

All who were arrested during this "protest" need to bring civil action against the FED, and the local and state police dept. The FIRST AMENDMENT overides any other "signing statements", or "Acts of Congress"(Patriot Act)(Enabling ACT)....This must be a massive LEGAL MOVEMENT...WE must all realize that we can't beat these bastards with guns and violence, but only with full understanding and use of the LAW as it already exists..I call out to all students of Pitt U who may be studying law as a major...MAKE THIS YOUR SOLE PURPOSE AS OF NOW TO STUDY THE CONSTITUTION, and bring charges against the ruthless thug cops who only feel powerful dressed like storm troopers, while bashing the skulls of innocent students....For the future of your contry"Nothing will ever be more important"..We all have cell phones and digital cams so we have plenty of evidence against these criminals...That is part of the disease these thugs have, they don't even realize that they are the criminals!!!!

    like Persy Shelley said:

The American people need their own army, one that answers to the people, not the corporations.

A People's First-Ammendment Protection Force, willing to pool resources to gear up people so that they are capable of standing up to these constitution violating thugs... is evidently what is called for now, at least judging on what has happened in Pittsburgh.

Of course, the bullshit 2-party system is designed to keep our support polarized and subsequently to prevent us from uniting... because if we were allowed to open our eyes we would see the left/right wing scam for what it is...

Sadly, I think the GOP's supporters are too "anti-liberal" and distracted by Faux Noise to actually see how un-American it is to violate the first ammendment, but we have our own ignorances too and should surprise the GOP's supporters by supporting them on first ammendment issues such as peaceful assembly.

The left wing and right wing BOTH need to stop seeing attacks against their faux-opposition's supporters as something to cheer about and instead see the violation of the first ammendment against a fellow citizen as the most important issue. Only if we are absolutely sure their first ammendment rights have not been abridged should we think of lampooning them in any way.

No more left vs right bullshit.

It's time to transcend that, especially when the REAL truth is:

    "we the people" vs. constitution-violating-thugs-under-orders-from-plutocratic-criminals

...if only everyone could open their eyes.

This is what America has become? All of the the old movies depicting America as a fascist police state protecting the interests of the wealthy and corporations have accurately predicted the future? Yes. But, it has always been this way. During the last great Depression the police and hired mercenary thugs bashed and killed many Americans who were forming unions, striking for fair wages and freedom from corporate tyranny. Beleive me, the worst to come has not even been glimpsed. The fascist police state control the media and can control access to the internet. Americans not only have no right to assemble in peace or voice dissent, they have no right to pass and gather information. Wake the hell up!
  • geribaldirasputin
It's official. Welcome to the Fascist USA ! But I'm not as bleak as some are in their assessment. Without their military technology to hide behind them, these robo-goons would be NOTHING. They are trying to compensate a lack of public support with brute force and brute force will only create more freedom fighters and patriots. Just think of how many young people who were in the university which sufferered this gas attack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NSsj4a6v5U&feat...
will now be radicalized. Fascism so "in your face" (especially the snatch n grab protester video) may succeed in making some people deathly afraid, but for others (many others) it has the exact opposite effect. No longer can people deny the blatant truth in front of their faces; THIS IS A COUP D'ETAT MILITARY TAKEOVER. It has begun folks. Military is violating the constitution in Georgia, Virginia, Utah, Pa., etc, etc and backing up the police. So long Posse Comitatus.
However, I don't submit to the gloom and doom people. If Ghandi and a mass of people could defeat the British empire without a shot being fired, we certainly can do the same. NON-VIOLENTLY RESIST !...but it's also nice to use you're 2nd amenment right to strap it on just in case (why do you think the tea party protest at the capital the other week didn't get fucked with?)
  • Howard
Luke Ravenstahl is a democrat and the mayor of Pittsburgh. Obama is a democrat and our president. Both should be held accountable for what happened in Pittsburgh where and amazing precedent was set when a sonic weapon (LRAD) was used on the citizens of the United States by it's own Police/Military. The people of Pittsburgh were treated like the people of Falluja by their own Police/Military. Beware the precedent has been sent and this will coming soon to a town near you.
  • How many times do people have to stage a protest before they realize this basic tactic:

Show up at the protest carrying not only protest signs but also US Flags. Do you realize just how bad it would look for the police is they were caught on camera assaulting citizens who were carrying our flag?

I would bet the cops would be at a baffled as to what to do-- for at least a little while.
  • Syed_H_S
It does not look like USA, it is thighland or another third or fourth world country, as far as Pittsburg police is concerned. The police chief must be suspended without pay and investigated. He worked against our national image and prestige. He must be dealt with as severe as possible under the law!
  • dvoconnor
Wow, these cops look like a bunch of thugs. Is there anyone in the Pittsburgh police department that has read and understands the 1st Amendment to the Constitution?

It's interesting to note that even with their robocop outfits and superior numbers, the cops still only pick out the smallest and most vulnerable to attack. They are pussies, but this is their training.
The chief of police Pittsburgh is the individual responsible for this fiasco and I hope the good people of that city will hold him accountable. As in other recent police riots, there will be lawsuits against the police and the city taxpayers will be on the hook for many millions of dollars.

Warning to students! We are with you in spirit, but please tread carefully! Remember, these men will harm you. They act, not from Christian values, and not from the values stated in our Constitution. Who are they? Are they your neighbors? Are they members of your local police departments? Are they Americans? They are nameless and faceless and they hide behind better armour than we afford our soldiers in Iraq and Iran. They are eerilly reminecient of the storm troopers from Star Wars (certainly those of the 1930s in Germany and Spain), and just about as friendly. As a group, they have no souls. They will kill their grandmothers, they will kick their pregnant wives, they will tortoure and kill their children and the children of their friends and neigbors. They act only at the behest of their corporate Lords and will do their bidding regardless of cost to family and friend. They owe their allegiance to no others, though they apparently act under the authority of our government. They respect no right of life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness on your part, nor your right to peaceful protest, and treat you as they would any enemy on foreign soil. They do not recognize you as the American citizens that you are. Remember, men whose faces were bared and who hid behind nor armour openly shot and killed four innocent, unarmed, non-violent students at Kent State. These students were running away at the time they were gunned down by members of our National Guard. These men will kill you with impunity, and brag about it over beers! Their corporate masters are celebrating over coktails even as they watch your friends being beaten to the ground as they comply by retreating. Welcome to the new Incorporated Fascist States of America. Notice the silence of your President. Please, be very careful and thoughtful, and non-violent in any reaction to this incident. Know that you are not alone. God help America, and protect us in our hour of need. Pax.

It seems that our elected officials who are owned by those elitists, robber barons, banskers, corporations--have now openly declared war on the people. I read recently online at one of the UK's news sites (Guardian, I think) that they used those sonic-type weapons to disburse crowds in the other recent protest, so what's next, real bullets? And are they planning to go so far as to bring out the military (our so-called "protectors") to use against the American citizen and start gunning us all down in the streets and hauling us off to prison camps as well--just for exercising our constitutional rights?

Maybe the military and law enforcement personnel have been so brainwashed they won't have any problems gunning down members of their own families, their children and friends, but I bet those fucking bankster/corporate robber barons don't want to see their children's blood flowing in the streets (even evil men presumably love their own children). I mean, just exactly where do these motherfuckers think this is all going to end? Or do they care--are they willing to murder and imprison millions of us? Probably.

I find it somewhat revealing that when the extreme right has their protests, we don't see this hostile behavior towards them from law enforcement (or possibly military as well). And I know some people don't like the nazi analogies, BUT, hitler did go after his political opponents before he went after anybody else--and one of the first groups he first sought to eliminate were the "liberals." Is that what's occurring now in America?

There be monsters in our country and we need to really get a grip on that reality and do something to defend ourselves and destroy these monsters. And clearly, we cannot rely on our military or our law enforcement to protect us as they apparently have become one of them--so it's left to us. Are we going to go out as lions or as lambs?

(Sorry for the emotional rant, but it just really breaks my heart at what's happened to my country, and I am outraged beyond words at all of those who have lived amongst us, as one of us, and yet could find it within themselves to betray us all--their own families, children, friends--their countrymen--by participating in the destruction of our liberties, freedoms, and rights--the destruction of their own country, for god sakes. So much evil prevailing in the world--so where ARE the forces of good that supposedly defeats evil? Where are those good forces, or is that just another lie as well.)
  • A
I see that you're a brave one when you've got anonymnity and the Internet to protect you.

    Paragraph 1: "It...rights?"

    Paragraph 2: "Maybe...Probably."

It may be true that politicians have a good bit of corporate backing--as far as I'm concerned, we could boot the whole Senate, put some of that money we're paying them toward paying off the national debt, and not worry about it at all. That much I'll give you. But, you're taking things a bit too far, trying to incite a riot over things that haven't happened, and will probably never happen. Sonic weapons are nonlethal in a way that rubber bullets, bean-bag shells, batons, and tasers could never be, for one. For another, to even insinuate, let alone flat-out SAY that our US military would ever turn its guns against us shows just how ignorant you are. The military exists to serve and protect, US soldiers are trained to view the term "civilian" as a rank that far outstrips that of "General."

    Paragraph 3: "I...America?"

When has the "extreme right" ever had a noteworthy protest? Nobody really wants to be associated with a bunch of people who are considered "right-wing nutjobs." There's a different story with the self-styled "Liberals" out there. People line up to participate in anything that will make them seem "open-minded" or where they can play the "good guy." As for what's occurring now in America, it's not political assassination, it's people who think like you do, "yvonne." It's people who NEED to learn to think about what they're going to say before they say it.

    Paragraph 4: "There...lambs?"

Not going to dignify this paragraph with a drawn-out response.

    Paragraph 5: "(Sorry...well.)"

First off, no you're not sorry. If you truly were sorry, you wouldn't have posted this "emotional rant" in the first place. Lying is bad, "yvonne." Truly, I'm saddened beyond words that people like you, who have nothing pleasant to say about others, and have room in your vocabulary for nothing but hate, hold the right to abuse the freedoms that the First Amendment offers.

People like you take your freedom for granted. You think that these are God-given rights that you and I, and everyone else here in the US share. And you are so deluded by these views that you attack the people responsible for keeping us safe, for making sure that we KEEP these rights, that we are able to exercise these rights.

Why don't you redirect your negative energy into something constructive and postitive? Like the Peace Corps, or you can join a church and go on a mission, and take your hate somewhere else. Maybe you could just go somewhere else without the church. I'm sure that a little bit of time without the protection of the US Constitution would make you realize just how lucky you are to be in the United States today...

"Or do they care--are they willing to murder and imprison millions of us?"

There's been a lot of hiring going on. We carry more of these militant collections agents on our backs than ever before, even when most of the so called "bad guys'' are already in jail. More cops, more jails, more prisons, more chaos and poverty so that it can continue. Nothing is chance. We are the gold standard of locking people up. yay.

Are these cops really American citizens? If they are, how can they be a part of the destruction of our country and our rights? This is to me one of the most disturbing aspects of all of this-- that these people that decided to go into law enforcement as a career, can be a part of the total destruction of the country our founding fathers created. They are showing themselves to be traitors of the American people all for the sake of their careers--a fucking paycheck! They have become the enemies of the American people.

These students were exercising their constitutional rights. And since we've all been taught that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land, it would seem then that it is so-called "law enforcement" that is breaking the law here. Goddamn them to hell every last one.
  • virgo47
Property law predates the Constitution by milennia. Thugs with weapons have been protecting property and the people that own it for just as long. This is nothing new. Why do so many americans pust so much trust and faith in a crubly old piece of paper? Rights exist only at the pleasure of those granting the rights. Death has always been the real law.

They only call it a class war when we fight back.

    .
Our Founding Fathers are turning in their graves.

This is not the America they created, this is the America the Bankers and Kings they initially left behind have created. The corrupted few let the moneyed interests buy legislation that let them lay the foundations for this Fascist State we live in now. Full on propaganda is used to steal more elections, and even with overwhelming mandates from the public, the "party" that [allegedly] represents them is failing to act in any significant way. We put them in office, the "media assassinations" of legislation should be moot; the party has the power, and they are _intentionally_ not using it.

America as it once was, as it was presented to me in school, as it was created to be, is gone. Armies of well armored goons are deploying chemical and sonic weapons against their own people who are PEACEFULLY assembled. The ruling elite in America are cowards, and the jackboots that protect them are as well. "Get that camera out of my face".. FUCK YOU! You're a PUBLIC SERVANT on a PUBLIC STREET.. and that fuck WOULD have beaten them if they stuck around (we've seen it countless times now), and would have suffered NO reprisal from his higher ups for doing it.

I noticed in one frame of the 3rd video that "off in the distance" (behind the line of gray shirted goons) there were some pretty big trucks, looked like 5 ton troop trucks to me (but black, so probably the City or State, not Federal).. It sure would be nice if someone could find out if the military is actually staged in the background in reserve.

We understand that there are "world leaders" here, but you cordon off 2 blocks or 3 blocks or whatever, and as long as the crowds are peaceful, they get to stand. The police need to do their JOB, which is to watch the crowd for "suspicious behavior", but they take the easy way out and violate the rights of thousands.

Couple this with a report that Dennis Kucinich has said he's pretty sure the Public Option is _planned_ to _fail_, that it won't happen in any useful context and we've been lied to...? What the fuck are we fighting for in this country? Why are so many left to slowly die with their rights violated so the robber barons can keep abusing us? and how the hell do SO MANY people in this country keep falling for the same bullshit game over and over?

And now we see heavily armored "police" by the many hundreds with high tech weapons behind them.. The "people" will never be able to invoke change in this nation because the governments have now secured a very distinct military advantage, numbers won't help because the tech against them renders massive numbers people impotent.. weapons won't help because they are all in state of the art body gear and the public has no weapons that are effective against that.. the people can no longer protect themselves against the enemy domestic.

It's time to leave America and find a nation that isn't insane. This is full on Fascism, this G20 summit is about finding a way to do business as usual, keep enriching the few, but finding a way to do it without breaking everything like they just did last year. We need a new paradigm, instead they are looking for new ways to pillage. When America collapses, it won't be pretty.. and it is well on it's way to collapse.

    Obama's america:
One expected and received this type of police behavior under, Reagan, Bush 1 and 2, -not so much Clinton, but Under Obama 1? . Other than the frightening scenes of the police dressed in riot gear, and the ending scene of the stoic cop telling the camera man the 'get that camera out of my face', how disturbing to see the tough cops ,dressed like dark blue smurfs ,facing down the young woman and man ; backing them up, till finally one brave , brave , brave cop goes up to them and gives them a shove with his night stick, and finally two other brave cops go to the aid of the first cop and , probably , gave the tough 90 lb girl a good kicking. Wow, every cop in the US should be very proud of this police action, and every citicen should go out and buy a copy of Kristian Williams book: "Our enemies in blue."

    Good comment.
Notice how virtually all of the once trusted progressive blogs NEVER link our new wars, torture, corruption, expanded wars, patriot act extensions, and in this case state sponsored police brutality, to our savior Obama? Never.

The fix is in to keep this con going for as long as possible. Corporate media lost all credibility 5 years ago. Progressive online media have clearly been bought and compromised too. I still see most people are not falling for the lies.
The only ones still cheering for Bush3 are paid die hard Democratic party employees and a few deluded fools who have short attention spans.

    Obama is Bush 3. Read a great summary here;

I only disagree on the comment about corporate media losing credibility just five years ago. They were completely bought out during World War Two, and even before then had no semblance of credibility. Remember Hearst's fictional rants on Teddy Roosevelt's battles and his timber protecting drive against marijuana? Corporate media has always been a whorish tool of the state.
