Overeager Dutch police ruin legal cannabis experiment
THE HAGUE — Dutch police were left red-faced after swooping on what they thought was an illegal cannabis farm only to partly dismantle a scientific experiment, the university that owns the plants said.
“More than half the plants were destroyed,” Simon Vink, spokesman for the University of Wageningen in the east of the country, told AFP on Thursday.
The plants were part of a legal experiment on the suitability of cannabis fibres for the production of textiles, paper and synthetic materials, he said.
“The project had been underway for years and was in its final phase, which would have allowed us to introduced these new fibres to the market.
“We will probably suffer big losses; we are busy doing the calculations. We are busy talking to the police” about recovering costs.
Police announced Wednesday having discovered about 47,000 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of 4.4 million euros (about 6.3 million dollars).
In fact, said Vink, the plants were unfit for cannabis production due to an extremely low content of THC, the psycho-active ingredient for soft drug use.
The Netherlands decriminalised the consumption and possession of under five grammes of cannabis in 1976, though its cultivation remains illegal.

yes.. must destroy the evil “weed”, that plant that can help us on a road to sustainability.. because it has a cousin that makes people feel good in a non-harmful way.
it’s nice to see that it’s not just American cops that are morons, though. But, one has to wonder.. if they were in the last stages of new “industrial hemp”, something various industries don’t want out there because they don’t want the competition, might this raid been more of a hit than a raid? How do the cops NOT know this is a legal experiment? These plants didn’t just magically pop into being, and the locality should have known they were being grown there.
something doesn’t smell right.
It sounds like the Dutch police are going to be paying a very hefty price for their We-Want-To-Be-Jackbooted-Pigs-Like-American-Cops stunt. May many dollars fall, and many heads roll.
Yeah, sure. I bet the cotton, paper and oil industries had nothing to do with this. (snark)
I’ve got my land ready to rock the moment hemp becomes legal. It just completly blows my mind how we talk all this green crap without a mention of growing hemp; truley an epic moment of complete greed mixing with uder stupidity in history. By the way, who the hell cares if you grow a couple of plants in your personal garden? NOBODY!
Move on is a good slogan for this type of thinking. Get the fuck out of the way!
no way the final phases of a controlled farm were raided without motivation. ignorance is bliss and the police dangle their feet off of clouds.
Not so bad, here in Kansas a cop busted a woman for growing an illegal drug. It turned out to be a sunflower, the state flower.
Cops = Dumb.
All over the world.
Marijuana prohibition makes them stupid.
Marijuana prohibition makes everybody who believes it stupid.
I hope they have to pay some massive bucks to the university, thought the timing of this raid IS suspect:
Cannabis remains illegal specifically to eliminate significant competition for petroleum-based industries.
Cops work for them, essentially, much like the EA here works for Big Pharma and the GOP. (Obama provides lip service to liberals about curtailing raids while Holder tells them to go for it.).
Just another Bad Cop story.
The only thing newsworthy is that it happened in the Netherlands, not in America, where such things happen EVERY DAY.
Cops are NOT selected for their intelligence, remember.
Jesus hates hemp, Jesus hates pot. jesus loves pigs. Verily he sayeth unto us my bully boy pigs can do no wrong in my eyes.
I received an email from a friend who has worked as a bartender at a coffeeshop in Amsterdam for more than a decade.
He says the word on the street is that this raid was no accident.
The destruction was deliberate, and the work of Dutch and US industrialists who paid the right people to have this done.
I can’t say whether this is true or not, but that’s what the people in the redlight are being told by the cops…
Peace
The industrial potential of hemp is why Du Pont hired Anslinger (the big Prohibition Cop) to demonize marijuana in the first place.
The raid was no accident, eh?
Make the cops pay, and pay, and pay, for the damage they did.
This was vandalism, pure and simple. Politically-motivated vandalism, done with a uniform, a badge, a gun, and the undeserved trust of the Dutch public.
Cops like that should get the Mussolini treatment..
